Built by Vista This summer, 87 Vista students clocked in. They weren't standing in the corner watching someone else work. They were answering phones, greeting customers, learning new software, sitting in on meetings and figuring out what it feels like to be counted on. Each of them worked up to 100 paid hours at one of 55 local businesses, nonprofits and public agencies. In August, we gathered those students at Vista High School with their employers, teachers and families to close out another year of the Velocity Summer Internship Program. There is something special about watching a 17-year-old shake hands with the person who spent the summer teaching them a skill. As far as I'm concerned, that's the whole job. I've been thinking about that room ever since, because this fall, three things are happening in Vista that might not seem connected at first. Our students went back to school. On Nov. 3, Vista voters will decide on a $543 million school facilities bond for Vista Unified. And the Vista Chamber of Commerce is preparing to move into a new home at 350 E. Broadway in downtown Vista. Three different places, but the same question: What kind of community are we building, and what are we building it for? Start with our schools. Many Vista neighborhood campuses were built more than 60 years ago, with hundreds of portable classrooms and aging
Iris Rayo G. at Clay N' Latte
2026 Summer Velocity Interns systems well past their intended life. Measure N would repair and replace those facilities without raising current tax rates. The Chamber's board voted to endorse the measure, and we did so intentionally as a business organization. Every Velocity intern we placed this summer came out of a Vista Unified classroom. Our members hire graduates of those classrooms, and some are graduates themselves. The condition of a science lab in Vista today can become a workforce issue in Vista tomorrow. That's also why Velocity matters so much to us. A diploma can teach a great deal, but it can't fully prepare a teenager for that first morning when someone says, "OK, here's what I need you to do." Somebody has to give them that first chance. The Chamber handles the wages and the paperwork. Our employers provide the real work, along with the coaching and patience that come with hiring someone who is just getting started. Since 2022, hundreds of Vista students have come through the program, and each one leaves with proof that someone trusted them and they showed up.
And now the Chamber is building something new, too. We've loved our years at The Film Hub and are grateful to their team. This is a change of address, not the end of a partnership. But we've grown, and so has what our members and community need from us. Our new Broadway home is designed for trainings, workshops, professional development, and the kind of gatherings where a young professional might sit down next to the person who someday hires them. We're calling it Built by Vista, because that's exactly what we hope it will be: a place created with and for the community it serves. Sponsorship opportunities are open now at vistachamber.org/built-by-vista. A community doesn't grow its own talent by accident. It creates places where people can learn, try, fail a little, get better and eventually lead. That takes classrooms that work, employers willing to make room for a beginner and community spaces with tables big enough to bring people together. Vista has been doing that for more than 100 years, and every generation gets its turn to decide what comes next.

Between now and mid-November, you'll find us at Fiestas Patrias on Sept. 13, at ribbon cuttings across town, and eventually at our own new front door on Broadway. Come see the space, find a way to get involved and, on Nov. 3, read all the way down the ballot. Thank you for believing in Vista. This is our chance to build it together. Let's do it!

Everybody Fits at Prohibition Brewing. Pull into 2004 East Vista Way on a Saturday afternoon, and the first thing you notice is space. Roughly 5,000 square feet of open-air patio, close to a hundred parking spaces, and enough room for a youth soccer team, a retirement party, and a couple splitting an order at a corner table to coexist without any of them ruining it for the others. Space like that is hard to come by, and it is why Prohibition tends to be where things happen rather than just where people drink. The second thing you notice is that the food is not an afterthought. The core of the menu is burgers, wings, and sandwiches, cooked like they matter rather than assembled to keep drinkers upright. The French Dip has a following. So does the BabyFace Nelson Burger, named after a Prohibition-era gangster in keeping with everything else here, which tells you somebody enjoyed writing this menu. And in a category almost no brewery bothers with, the Tomato Basil Soup and Grilled Cheese is one of the most-ordered things in the building. It is a comfortfood served with a side of Vista hospitality. The beer is made with more deliberation than the taproom's easygoing feel lets on. Pacific Northwest hops, Midwestern grain, San Diego County yeast, chosen on quality rather than on whoever is cheapest that quarter. It is a small distinction that shows up in the glass. Two of their long loved favorite are The Gringo Loco, a Mexican-style lager, which on a warm afternoon on that patio is simply the correct order, and most regulars have stopped pretending otherwise. The ProCo IPA is a West Coast IPA, the style San Diego County effectively wrote the rules for, and it is the house answer to anyone walking in wanting to know whether the brewery is serious about brewing. The rest of the board rewards exploring. Owner Kyle Adams spends less time thinking about beer than people assume. He thinks about throughput, about kitchen timing on a packed Saturday, about whether the patio can absorb three parties at once. Running a brewery that is also a real restaurant means two businesses sharing one roof, and the roof is one of the oldest restaurant buildings in Vista.

VISTACHAMBER.ORG
The building is part of the story. So is the barn that came before it. Kyle's parents, Ron and Kathy Adams, started homebrewing during the Great Recession, when Ron was in construction and construction was not a good place to be. Friends asked for more, then friends of friends, and the batches outgrew the barn. The family opened Prohibition on 11/11/11, back when Vista had almost no breweries instead of dozens. The name is a wink at those barn years, when a homebrewer with a serious setup was working in a gray area. Fourteen years of patio has produced a long list of special moments. First dates. Wedding rehearsals. Celebrations of life. High school reunions where old flames reignited, more than once. Several couples who met there are now married with kids. One couple asked to buy the specific table where they met and used it as the centerpiece at their wedding, so that table now lives in somebody's house instead of on the patio. A regular once brought an alpaca. Nobody objected. The place is dog-friendly and genuinely kid-tolerant, with great beers and food and something for everyone. Kyle also puts the business to work on the next generation. Prohibition has hosted interns through the Chamber's Velocity Internship Program for several years and has hired some of them on after the summer ended, which is the outcome the program is built for and does not happen everywhere. He volunteers at Cal State San Marcos, his alma mater, and sits on the Community Advisory Board at Alta Vista High School, where the message is that culinary and brewing careers are real careers and a four-year degree is not the only route to one that pays. He has the degree himself, which is what makes the argument land rather than sound like a consolation prize. Kyle serves on the Vista Chamber Board of Directors; Ron was Chamber Board Chair from July 2020 through June 2021. Come hungry. Bring the dog. Take the good table if it is open, because someone may eventually want to buy it. Prohibition Brewing Co. is at 2004 E Vista Way, Vista, CA 92084. (760) 295-3525.

from the chair
There’s always something bittersweet about the end of summer. The longer days start getting a little shorter, vacations and beach days give way to school supplies and new routines, and before you know it, another school year is beginning. As a parent of three, I know our house isn’t always completely ready for that transition—but there’s also something I really love about this time of year. And “back to school” looks a little different for every family. For some kids, it means heading back to a classroom at one of our local public schools, reconnecting with friends and meeting a new teacher. For others, it means returning to a private or charter school. And for many families in our community, including those who homeschool, a new school year may begin around the kitchen table, through a homeschool co-op, on a field trip, or anywhere else learning happens. However it looks, there’s something exciting about a fresh start. For me, this time of year is also another reminder of just how much Vista means to my family.
Joe Henschel Chair of the Board
I was born and raised here. I grew up in this community, and years later, when my wife and I were deciding where we wanted to plant roots and raise our own family, Vista was our first choice. There’s something pretty special about watching my kids grow up in the same city that played such a big part in making me who I am. And yet, the Vista they are growing up in is also different from the one I remember. There are new businesses, new restaurants, new neighborhoods and new families calling Vista home. Our city continues to grow and change, but underneath all of that growth, I still see the same thing that has always made Vista special: community.
There’s something pretty special about watching my kids grow up in the same city that played such a big part in making me who I am.
You see it at Friday night football games and school events. You see homeschool families meeting at our parks and libraries. You see it at local restaurants, churches, sports fields and community gatherings. You see teachers, parents, coaches, business owners and neighbors investing their time and energy into the next generation. Because ultimately, regardless of where our kids do their learning, they are all growing up together in the same community. They are creating their own version of Vista right now. That’s also why I’m so proud to be part of the Vista Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s work may often center around supporting local businesses, but I believe the impact goes much further than that. When our small businesses succeed, they create jobs, support local families, sponsor our kids’ teams and schools, give back to local organizations and help create the places where our community comes together. Supporting a local business isn’t just about where we choose to spend our money. It’s about investing in the people who live, work and raise their families alongside us. And the Chamber is here to help strengthen those connections—supporting the businesses, families and people who make Vista the community we’re proud to call home. Someday, our kids may drive through town and point out the park where they met their friends, the field where they played their first game, their favorite local restaurant, the school they attended—or the places around Vista that became their classroom. They’ll have their own stories about growing up here. As a dad, that means a lot to me. So as summer comes to an end and families across Vista settle into another year of classrooms, homeschool lessons, practices, field trips, homework and everything else that comes with raising kids, I’m trying to remember not to rush through it too quickly. These seasons go fast. And I’m grateful that for my family, and my community.

A Legacy of Durability: Redback Boots’ Journey from Sydney to Vista By Anne McDonnell
8
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
Redback Boots is a footwear brand specializing in premium work and lifestyle boots. The Australian company is best known for its durable work boots designed for demanding environments, with a focus on comfort, safety, and long-lasting performance. In addition to boots, the company also offers accessories, including socks, belts, hats, boxer briefs, boot insoles, and leather conditioners and preservatives to help protect and extend the life of their footwear.
The company was founded in 1989 by brothers Matt and Mark Cloros, but its roots go back to the early 1900s, when the Cloros family began making boots in Sydney, Australia, after immigrating from Greece, explains Daniel Meyer, Redback Boots Vice President. The family’s early boot-making business grew through the 20th century, supplying durable footwear to Australian workers and helping build a reputation for tough, practical work boots. The business has stayed committed to manufacturing in Australia, and Redback is now on its fifth generation of boot makers. Meyer explains that this appeals to buyers looking for consistent manufacturing standards. The U.S. importer and distributor of Redback, Dangra Inc., was established in 1997 by its founder Thomas Meyer, laying the foundation for Redback’s American business. The company had a distribution and warehousing operation in Escondido for more than 30 years, and moved to Vista in 2024 to support a growing operation, Meyer says. All boots for the U.S. market are distributed out of the Vista warehouse, which also houses a storefront for local shoppers. The Vista location is open to the public Monday through Friday.
Redback offers a wide variety of boot styles, including Chelsea/slip-on work boots, steel-toe safety boots, heavyduty work boots, lace-up boots, and lifestyle/casual boots. Workers who wear Redback boots come from many industries, including farming/ranching, manufacturing, warehouse, construction, and industrial. They include mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, emergency services and public safety professionals (such as firefighters), restaurant workers, brewers, and more! Customers appreciate the air-cushioned midsole and outsole, which helps to reduce fatigue for people who spend long hours standing or walking on hard surfaces, such as concrete. “Many users notice this immediately compared with boots that have firmer, denser soles,” says Meyer. The boots are also slip resistant and can be worn in wet environments. The bootmaker has partnerships with many organizations, including its largest U.S. distribution partner, Matco Tools, which has more than 1,500 independent tool distributors serving automotive technicians across the United States. In addition, Redback products are available through Cornwell Tools and Mac Tools, further strength-
ening its presence among mechanics and other skilled trade professionals. Redback proudly supports local brewers in Vista and surrounding cities with a 30% discount for all brewery employees. This includes teams at Craft Coast, Burgeon Beer Company, Stone Brewing, Belching Beaver, Booze Brothers, and other local breweries. “We’re grateful for the craft brewing community and the hard work that goes into every pour,” Meyer says. Redback is a family-owned and operated company with a dedicated team that is passionate about its products. Says Meyer, “I’ve grown up in North County my entire life, and it means a lot to see this brand based right here in Vista.” Redback Boots USA 2350 Oak Ridge Way Vista, CA 92083 (760) 746-9632

Mayor's Message Mayor John Franklin
Dear Vista Community, Vista’s future is bright because our community believes in its young people. Through the dedication of Vista’s teachers and the workforce development programs offered by the Vista Chamber of Commerce, young people are gaining the knowledge, experience, and encouragement they need to succeed. Their achievements, and the educators, businesses, and community partners supporting them, deserve to be celebrated. The Chamber plays an important role in preparing Vista’s youth for the future. Programs such as the Velocity Summer Internship Program, Rising Star Student of the Month, the National Civics Bee, and Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning help young people explore careers, gain workplace experience, and recognize their potential. Since 2022, the Velocity program has connected more than 300 students with local businesses for paid internships aligned with their career interests. These experiences help participants develop practical skills, build professional relationships, and gain confidence as they prepare for college, technical training, or the workforce. They also help Vista businesses cultivate the talented employees and community leaders of tomorrow. We also recognize Vista’s teachers, whose commitment, creativity, and encouragement make a lasting difference in the lives of young people every day. Teachers do far more than provide instruction. They inspire curiosity, help students discover their strengths, and prepare them to pursue their goals.
Supporting these efforts is the Vista Education Foundation, a great partner to the Vista Unified School District. Through scholarships, educational grants and community partnerships, the Foundation expands opportunities for local students while supporting educators and innovative programs in areas such as the arts, technology and vocational training. Its work demonstrates what is possible when a community comes together to invest in the next generation. Fall also brings many opportunities to come together as a community. I invite you to join us for the Vista Rod Run on September 6; the City’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on September 11; Movies in the Park featuring Disney’s Zootopia 2 on September 12; Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19; Cyclovia Vista on September 26; and Vista Fright Night on October 30. These are just a few of the events taking place this fall. Visit vista.gov/ calendar for more information and additional ways to connect with our community. I look forward to seeing you around Vista! John Franklin, Mayor, City of Vista

Mikko Sushi:
Shared Success, Fresh Flavors & Family Vibes By Jennifer Madsen Jones
12
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
cost-cutting means smaller profit margins, Mikko Sushi firmly believes that serving honest, premium food is the only way to earn and keep customer trust. For nearly a decade, the deep bonds built with guests have become the most rewarding part of the Mikko Sushi journey. The restaurant has truly become a backdrop for cherished local memories.
Since opening its doors in Vista in 2018, Mikko Sushi has stayed true to a simple, powerful goal: serving high-quality, delicious Japanese cuisine in a warm, welcoming atmosphere at affordable prices. Mikko Sushi aims to create an unforgettable dining experience. It is this philosophy that transforms first-time visitors into lifelong regulars and cements the restaurant as a true neighborhood favorite.
At the heart of Mikko Sushi’s success is its deeply loyal and experienced team. Remarkably, most of the sushi chefs and kitchen staff have been with the restaurant since day one. This longevity breeds exceptional teamwork, constant culinary growth, and a profound attention to detail. Owner Mia Davis and her management team ensure the staff works in an environment built on mutual respect and fair compensation. One of the most impactful ways Mikko Sushi puts this into practice is through a unique pooled tip system. Sushi chefs, kitchen staff, and servers all share tips equally. Because everyone works toward the same goal, everyone shares in the restaurant's daily success. This collective mindset translates directly to the dining room floor, fueling a shared commitment to top-tier guest care.
One young couple chose Mikko Sushi for their very first date. Over the years, the staff watched them grow closer, get married, and today, they are regular guests who bring along their two-year-old child. Another loyal local family has gathered at the restaurant almost every Friday night for years, recently celebrating their grandfather's 92nd birthday right at their favorite table. The team has also watched local families grow right before their eyes. One family first visited the restaurant when their oldest child was just a baby. Today, the parents have a second child, and both siblings regularly enjoy sushi together at the restaurant. Moments like these serve as a beautiful reminder that Mikko Sushi is doing much more than just serving meals, they are becoming a small but meaningful part of their guests' lives, traditions, and cherished memories. Mikko Sushi may not seek to be a luxury, highpriced establishment, but its dedication to exceptional value and warm hospitality makes it an
absolute gem. It is a place where staff take immense pride in their craft and where local families will undoubtedly continue to gather for many years to come. Visit Mikko Sushi Vista 330 Main Street Vista, CA 92084 Phone: 760-842-8001 mikkosushi.com
Maintaining reasonable prices while refusing to compromise on food quality is no easy task. Mikko Sushi achieves this balance by purchasing ingredients in large quantities, passing the savings directly to their guests. Fresh ingredients arrive consistently throughout the week. Salmon, the restaurant’s most popular fish, is delivered fresh every single morning. Whole tuna arrives twice a week and is expertly broken down in-house by the head sushi chef. The kitchen also prioritizes locally sourced vegetables for its seasonal menus and makes its signature sauces entirely from scratch multiple times a week. Dedicated to our craft and the planet. By Miguel Martinez
16
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
A craft brewed drink is created from various ingredients, but it can also be rich with community and care. High quality, sustainability, and community are the pillars that shape Pure Project Brewery and their organic craft beers. Cheyna Swartz, the Hospitality Manager, affirms that the owners wanted to “make a high quality tangible product while being more eco-conscious and leave everything better for everyone.” Their inclusive and deliberate mindset is reflected everywhere across their local partnerships to their drinks and beyond. Their doors are open to all and newcomers can enjoy their signature craft beers, hard slushies, non-alcoholic drinks, wine, IPAs, hard seltzers, and more. Cheyna adds, “we can accommodate a lot of different groups and we're a space for everyone.” Pure Project prioritized sustainability as they believe their customers deserve fresh, quality drinks. They source their ingredients directly from organic farms which allows them to self distribute and keep a close eye on their products. For instance, they source their strawberries and lemons from J.R. Organics from Escondido who they have partnered with for 10 years. Cheyna believes that working with local farmers helps
strengthen Pure Project’s ties with local communities. Their mindful decisions also led them to partner with ‘1% for the Planet’ to ensure 1% of their total sales help environmental actions. In addition, Pure Project researches and incorporates modern sustainability technology to minimize their carbon footprint. Cheyna states, “We've been certified climate neutral for many years, and most recently we added a CO2 recapture system.” Meaning, the CO2 that their tanks release can be recaptured and repurposed. Sustainability is everything to Pure Project and their mindful business decisions, investments, and hospitality extends to their customers.
everything is personalized as Pure Project will connect with guests to establish a custom space that is “welcoming, positive, and happy.” Cheyna personally recommends the flight with a friend, which is five for the price of four, because of its delicious wide range of styles and visual appeal. Since 2021, Pure Project Brewery’s strengths flow through sustainability efforts and quality service. Cheyna says it best, “It’s a team effort across all
departments from the bar to the back of house, and we’re here because we care about the mission of Pure Project and the impact we do have on people and the planet. And the beers are just a delicious bonus!” Keep up to date with Pure Project through their website at www.purebrewing.org and catch daily updates on their Instagram @ purebrewingvista. They are located at 1305 Hot Springs Way, Vista,.
Although at the edge of town, Pure Project is still a destination worth visiting for their inclusive family and dog friendly taproom, relaxing atmosphere, and excellent service. Guests can enjoy a cold drink by the cozy patio or by the bar and witness the towering silver tanks brewing away. Cheyna describes, “you’ll get the beautiful aromas flowing into the taproom and you’ll feel connected to everything here.” Customers can also reserve the space for up to 200 people and enjoy private events, such as weddings. From the office of
Jim Desmond
San Diego County Supervisor
s the leaves begin to turn and another beautiful season settles over our community, I find myself reflecting on what an extraordinary privilege it has been to serve you. There is no honor in my life I hold more dearly than the trust you have placed in me, and as this fall edition of Vista Magazine reaches you, I wanted to take a moment to say something simple and heartfelt: thank you. Serving as your Supervisor has been the tremendous honor of a lifetime. Every conversation on a doorstep, every note in my inbox, every neighbor who stopped me at the grocery store to share an idea or a concern has reminded me why this work matters so deeply. You have welcomed me into your lives with warmth and generosity, and I carry the responsibility of representing you with pride every single day. As many of you know, my time in this role will come to a close as I term out in the new year. While that milestone approaches, I want to be absolutely clear about one thing. I am not slowing down. I intend to work just as hard in these coming months as I did on my very first day. There is important work still to be done, and I owe it to each of you to finish strong. The commitment I made to this community did not come with an expiration date, and I will give everything I have right up until the final hour.
This community is remarkable not because of any one person who serves it, but because of the people who make it home. It is your kindness, your resilience, and your unwavering neighborly spirit that make this such a special place to live. I have watched you show up for one another time and again, in moments of celebration and in moments of challenge, and it never fails to move me. Whatever comes next for me, I will always count myself lucky to have been a small part of your story. So as the season changes and the holidays draw near, please know how deeply grateful I am. And please, do not hesitate to reach out. My door remains open, my phone remains on, and my commitment to you remains as strong as ever. Whether you have a question, a concern, or simply want to say hello, I want to hear from you. That is what this role has always been about, and it is what I will cherish most. With profound gratitude and my warmest wishes for a wonderful fall, Jim Desmond San Diego County Supervisor, District 5 Office: (760) 740-5500

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens
By Elizabeth Bickford
s The gardens are open seven days a week and available at an affordable price of $5.00 per visitor. Unlike other botanical gardens in the area, the nonprofit strives to provide an affordable space for all who wish to enjoy!
T
he Alta Vista Botanical Garden is a volunteer-based organization that offers a beautiful and educational space for all!
The botanical garden has been a self-funded nonprofit since 1999. Support from visitors and volunteers makes this welcoming space possible. Located on 14 acres atop of Brengle Terrace Park the botanical gardens are made up of over 17 different garden spaces, ranging from rose gardens to desert landscapes. This space is lovingly maintained through volunteer gardeners and dedicated board members. One way the garden has maintained affordability is through a partnership with the Vista Chamber of Commerce’s Velocity internship program. This internship is a paid workforce development program that offers rising high school seniors an opportunity to match with a local business in need of workforce support. Students interested in a Velocity Internship apply through the VCC’s application. The program is open to VUSD students and offers real work experience. The Velocity team members work with the businesses to determine what skills their ideal intern would possess. Once matched the summer program provides the students with 100 paid working hours. Garden Manager, Rusti Dixon, oversees the program at the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, in addition to running the day-to-day operations. She first visited the gardens with her young children and it has been a passion project ever since. Over the past four years, Rusti has been developing the internship program at the gardens and says the interns have been doing exceptional work.
24
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
This year, students are working to create a digital catalog of historical files on the gardens to be shared with the public and they also re-organized the public garden library on site. Rusti, discussed the importance of this program and how it has had a positive financial impact on the nonprofit. Each year they have seen a substantial increase in membership and daily admission. This year is already set to surpass all previous years. This further demonstrates the need for interns and volunteerism. Student intern, Daisy Zarati, described her experience at the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens as a positive one. She feels an internship at the nonprofit provides an impactful opportunity. She has obtained useful skills through this process, including cashier experience, secretarial knowledge, and business place best practices. She said her experience has been so positive that she would consider volunteering at the gardens next year without an internship. Without the full support of the community and participation in their special events, the botanical gardens would not be able to operate. There are many ways to support the gardens. Consider offering your time as an adopted gardener, volunteering at the gift shop, or consider attending one of their upcoming special events. This fall, the gardens will be hosting multiple events. On October 10th check out the Fall Fun Fest, an event for all ages. Novemberfest will be held on November 7th. This is an adult only event featuring unlimited tastings from local brewers and food for purchase. Special events provide essential funding for improvements and maintenance of the gardens.
To learn more about events and membership at the botanical gardens, visit their website: AltaVistaBotanicalGardens.org or stop by in person to explore. The botanical gardens are located at 1270 Vale Terrace Drive in Vista. VISTACHAMBER.ORG

A patchwork of love and patience made Mosaique Fabrics a possibility! It was a dream shelved for years until Moneca and Kam Shelhoup opened their store just two years ago in Vista Village!
28
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
Long-time business owners, the Shelhoups have put their combined knowledge into opening their fabric shop in the heart of Vista. Moneca is an experienced seamstress and tailor. Coming from a family of master seamstresses, she quickly outpaced her home economics class before she stepped in the door. She recalled her school wardrobe as “if you want it, you had to make it!” Her journey to opening her shop in Vista Village began in Whittier, California 28 years ago when she met her husband. Kam Shelhoup owned an antique store in Vista Village, and they operated it together for several years. This was her introduction to the Vista community. Even at the antique shop, she incorporated fabrics into her life! Wanting to create and renew furniture, she took an upholstery course through a local college. She took on an ambitious project for her first attempt. Her teacher, who was worried at first, quickly changed their tune and entered her channel back chair in the San Diego County Fair. She won first prize! When her husband decided to close the antique shop to retire, Moneca started looking for a new passion project. She had always been in love with a little storefront in Vista Village, but COVID became a hurdle. Opening an in-person shop based around community and collaboration did not seem possible at the time. Unfortunately, that storefront slipped away from her and she had to put her dream on hold. A few years went by and the storefront became available, but each time
something stood in the way. Finally, just two years ago, the space was available again. Hesitant to take it on without the support of Kam, she avoided the temptation. Eventually, she could not resist any longer. With her husband in hand, they visited the storefront she always had her heart set on. Moneca said when she stepped foot into the store she felt like she had returned to an old friend. Thinking it was just a dream again she almost declined the lease. It was her husband who encouraged her to take that leap - they would work to achieve her dream together! Moneca enjoys teaching. She says, “it feeds my soul.” Having time to teach is extremely important to her. Moneca offers on-site lessons, including small group courses on a variety of crafting techniques available to book on her website. For private lessons, she prefers to connect directly. Moneca says, “Once I teach you, you can’t shake me.” This was clear by the small group sitting around the table as she discussed her journey in bringing her shop to life. Several students were sitting with us dutifully working away. You could feel her true passion for sharing her creativity with the community. Moneca has built a welcoming space, join her in sharing in the fabric of life! You can visit during store hours on Tuesday through Saturday and check out her social media and website for updated information: Mosaiquefabrics.com. Mosaique Fabrics is located at 222 East Broadway in Vista.

Q:
What makes a party unforgetable?
30
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
What makes a party unforgettable? Pompeo DJ Company is the answer. Owner Frank Pompeo has been lighting up Southern California for 19 years providing DJ services and unforgettable events. In his youth, Frank was constantly surrounded by music and jumped at any opportunity to share his love of music through burned CDs, mixtapes, and hosting school events. You may have heard him or his company emcee perform at Vista’s Strawberry Festival, Christmas Parade, or Fiesta Patrias. Frank’s career officially started in 2007 when technology could finally store his entire music library into one device. His flexibility to modern technology and connections with local schools and nightlife helped set his trajectory to be a reliable and popular DJ.
A:
Pompeo DJ Company!
By Miguel Martinez
Frank took his flexibility and used it as a business practice by serving a wide range of people by being “open format.” He explains, “We have to be flexible enough to have a big enough network of a team to fit the right DJ with the right client.” DJ Pompeo Company works closely with their clients to fulfill their vision while orchestrating the high points of the events. Frank points to intentional planning, execution, and personalized accommodation as key factors that convert days into life long memories. Early one-on-one discussions help both Frank and his clients understand what music, ambience, and layout their event needs. According to Frank, clients don’t immediately understand the "science of a party” as each party is unique. “We’re thinking how all their songs of choice fit. How much time is left? Who’s reacting on the dance floor?” Planning, DJ selection, and availability push the company’s customer service to be one of their strongest and leading attributes. These business systems were perfected over years resulting in Frank overdelivering and exceeding all expectations.
DJ Pompeo Company never misses a beat and ensures the best and most memorable events to all their clients. Frank Pompeo connects with his clients, team, and interns to provide excellent customer service and makes each event a collaborative effort. Their wide range of services such as DJ, custom lighting, emcee, Karaoke, open format, and more allowed them to serve southern California for so many years. For the best DJs and other event services, contact DJ Pompeo Company through their website at pompeodj.com, email them at info@pompeodj or call them at (760) 481-5858.
Frank’s business mindset and DJ expertise are now currently taught to his new interns through the Vista Velocity Summer Student Internship Program. Interns learn what it means to run a business first in tandem with expanding their interest of becoming a fully realized DJ. Frank notes, “Events are fast paced and high stakes, so we have to be on our A-game…and our interns are soaking it all in and getting the rhythm of executing an event.” He adds that small tasks like unloading equipment have their own process too which reinforces Frank’s preparation and precise style. He continues, “They're very bright and I hope they come away from this experience with practical knowledge of the art but also how to run a business based on something they’re passionate about.” VISTACHAMBER.ORG

Dear Vista Unified Families,
It is a true pleasure to welcome you back for the 2026–2027 school year. Throughout the summer, thousands of students participated in learning opportunities across every grade span, from preschool through high school. We also expanded our paid Velocity internship program through our partnership with the Vista Chamber ofCommerce, providing more than 100 high school students with meaningful workplace experiences that connected classroom learning to future careers. Behind the scenes, our teachers and staff have been preparing for another year of learning. As we begin, I am reminded that education is, at its heart, an act of optimism. We begin every school year believing that every student can grow, every challenge can become an opportunity to learn, and every child has strengths waiting to be discovered. One of the things I have learned about schools is that the moments that matter most are rarely the ones we plan for. They often begin in ordinary ways: a lesson that finally makes sense, a question that sparks curiosity, or a conversation that gives a student the confidence to keep trying. Those moments happe nbecause schools intentionally create the conditions where learning flourishes, curiosity grows, and students feel safe enough to take risks. In Vista Unified, we believe in the Pulse of Possibility for every student. Every child enters our schools with strengths, interests, and aspirations. Our collective responsibility as educators, families, and community members is to help students discover those possibilities while providing the knowledge, skills, and experiences that prepare them for the future. Our district vision remains clear: every student will graduate as a resilient, agil elearner and creative problem solver who navigates the world with confidence and kindness. Through our Learner Portrait, we continue developing students who are Kind and Confident, Curious and Connected, and Capable and Knowledgeable. Preparing students for that future also means recognizing that childhood is changing. Families and educators are navigating important questions about screen time, social media, and helping children build healthy relationships in an increasingly digital world. At the same time, artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the futur eour students will inherit. While these technologies create remarkable opportunities, they also reinforce the importance of what schools have always done best: helping students think critically, solve meaningful problems, collaborate with others, communicate effectively, and develop the judgment and character to use new technologies wisely.
nurses, psychologists, and dedicated staff who supportstudents academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. This June, our School Board approved Matt Doyle, Ed.D. important updates to our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Superintendent's Corner Blueprint for Educational Excellenceand Innovation. These plans reflect the priorities of our community and ensure students and staff have the resources, opportunities, and support needed to achieve excellence and innovation. You will continue to see those commitments reflected throughout our schools. We will strengthen literacy through the Science of Reading and Phonics, deepen mathematics through reasoning and problem solving, strengthen transitions between grade spans, and continue expanding RIASEC, internships, and college and career experiences so students better understand their strengths and the many pathways available to them. Beyond the classroom, athletics, visual and performing arts, clubs, leadership opportunities, and expanded learning continue to help students build confidence, resilience, friendships, and a sense of belonging. These experiences are not extras; they are an essential part of helping young people discover who they are and who they will become. Finally, we remain committed to providing schools that are both safe and welcoming. Excellence in learning and safety go hand in hand, and we will continue working together to ensure every student feels supported ,challenged, and inspired every day they walk through our doors. Thank you for your continued partnership and for the trust you place in Vista Unified. We look forward to all that we will learn, discover, and accomplish together this year. Welcome back, and have a wonderful school year!

Vista Education Foundation Breaking Barriers to Higher Education for Vista Students By Julie Smith Taylor
34
VISTACHAMBER.ORG
To give our students at VUSD as many opportunities as possible and to address the increasing costs of higher education, the Vista Education Foundation (VEF) has been working hard since 2004 with the mission to provide financial support through funding educator requests and college/tech school scholarships for graduating seniors.
“As a result of the longstanding partnership with VUSD, all of our students have benefitted from the foundation in a variety of ways.”
“We are dedicated to bridging opportunity gaps, supporting educators, and investing in the academic and creative potential of every student in the Vista community,” says Vicente Hinojosa, VEF President and CEO since 2020. “We support students in the arts, music, and technology through internships, mentoring programs, apprenticeships, scholarships, grants, and community partnerships. I am proud to say that 100 percent of the funds we raise go to support our scholarships and grants.” Last year, for example, VEF awarded more than $50,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors. In response to the growing demand for skilled trades workers, additional funds were allocated for trade schools and apprenticeships. Over the last 10 years, the foundation has distributed close to $589,000. Earlier this school year, the foundation provided a grant to the Vista High Marching Band for a new tuba to ensure the band can continue to grow and thrive. It also donated money for instruments and other supplies needed to establish a Mariachi group at both Vista and Rancho Buena Vista High Schools that now perform at community events. “As a result of the long-standing partnership with VUSD, all of our students have benefitted from the foundation in a variety of ways,” says Dr. Matt Doyle, VUSD Superintendent of Schools. The Foundation is a 501(3)(c) non-profit tax-exempt philanthropic organization and is led by a 100 percent volunteer-based board of directors. “We are futurefocused,” says Hinojosa, who is a financial advisor and owner of VH Financial Group and DBA Advanced Financial Solutions in Vista. “As the need has grown, so have we, from four members to 12. Our board is made up of passionate community members that bring unique skill sets and experience to the board that include: Marie Hoveln, Treasurer; Susan Stuber, Secretary; David Sherman, VP of Events; Jeff Fox, VP of Communications; Tracy Zachry, Education Director; John Herrera, Community Liaison; Frank Pierce, Mary Trompeter-Ermis, and Adrina Itzaina, Directors-at-large; Dr. Matt Doyle, Honorary Director, as well as Mayor John Franklin.
Community partnerships and apprenticeships Other partners include: North County Ford, Children’s Paradise Preschool and Infant Centers, Moonlight Youth Theater, Star Fox Media, TJ Crossman’s Auto Repair, Seven Seas Bar & Grill, Kiwanis, EDCO, and the City of Vista. Along with scholarships, students benefit from apprenticeships offered by the Foundation’s partners. “From sound checks to lighting, this popular apprenticeship at Moonlight Youth Theater trains students in basic stagecraft that can lead to careers in the entertainment industry,” says Hinojosa. Another exciting program recently launched is the Career Super Highway in partnership with North County Ford. Top students in the Automotive Class at Vista High are awarded a letter jacket, a tool box, a scholarship to Palomar College to pay for the automotive certification test and even a job offer from the dealership. “It’s another example of how our board members work hard to turn great ideas into great opportunities and we hope to expand it!,” explains Hinojosa.
How You Can Help To support the great work of the Vista Education Foundation, you can donate directly at www.vistaed.org. “No donation is ever too small,” says Hinojosa. You can also volunteer or participate in the foundation’s annual charity golf tournament in partnership with the Vista Sunrise Kiwanis. This year’s event was held August 10th at El Camino Country Club. The Foundation also has an annual presence at the Festival of the Arts. Another fundraiser, a dinner and a show gala at the Moonlight Amphitheatre is set for October 8 for “Beetlejuice”. Buy your tickets online at www.vistaed.org VISTACHAMBER.ORG

CTE Program Students at RBVHS Building Tiny Homes for Veterans

ing professional-grade equipment for residential construction and real-world welding pathways. This partnership with the Warrior Village Project allows us to do so while also creating something usable for local veterans.”
Partnership with Warrior Village Project, VUSD Creates Win-Win VUSD’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program continues to create wonderful opportunities for our students. Based on a partnership with Mark Pilcher of the Warrior Village Project, up to 150 students per semester are now working to build two tiny homes at Rancho Buena Vista High School (RBVHS) for local veterans in need. The Construction and Welding courses were established in 2022 and are now housed in a 9,000 sf space that includes two classrooms and two lab areas for project work. The district made an investment of $13.5M with funding from the LL Bond Measure to build the facility with $4M covered by grants. The facility is also used by students from Alta Vista and Murray that take after school courses in both construction and welding. Robert Crowell, Career Pathways Coordinator says, “It’s important to give our students an opportunity to explore other career paths that utilize different skill sets and talents they might not otherwise have realized they had,” he explains. “Attending a four-year university is not for everyone. Our objective is for students to gain knowledge and experience at all levels and aspects of construction us-
“The Warrior Village Project funds all the materials and sponsors, which helps keep hard costs at bay,” continues Crowell. “There is also a strong focus on safety. Once students earn their OSHA safety certifications and have proven they have a working knowledge of the tools they will be using, they are divided into groups of 10 that rotate in and out to work on the tiny houses. We also have volunteers from the trades or independent contractors who will come in and work with the students.” Landon Cardenas is the construction class teacher. The welding teacher is Derek Mendiola who has a ship building background. Both required special certifications to teach these courses. “I believe AP and CTE programs can coexist because the skills we teach are for a lifetime no matter what career path you take,” says Cardenas. “Students are learning and also feeling good about being part of a philanthropic effort that is going to be someone’s home some day. You never know how exposure to one of the trades we teach can unlock an entire career path for a student.” Another interesting fact about the program is that approximately 17 percent are female (above industry participa-
tion levels) with numbers continuing to climb. Earlier this spring Cardenas brought a team of his best students to a two-day building competition in Orange County that attracted more than 40 other schools including trade schools and colleges. The annual event is sponsored by the Construction Industry Education Foundation. Each team had to build a shed from the ground up that was judged by industry pros. For the first time, RBVHS won the “Best Craftsmanship” Award. “It was a huge achievement for us,” he says. Crowell says the district has plans to expand the CTE construction programs into our middle schools so younger children can become familiarized with working with tools, construction basics, and working with their hands. To further expand this program, the district plans to ask the citizens of Vista to approve a new bond measure on the ballot this November, showcasing the great results they have achieved so far. “These classes give our top students up to 300 credit hours that can be applied toward an apprenticeship with the Southwest Carpenter’s Union,” says Cardenas. “It opens the door to a viable career path right after graduation in an industry that AI can’t eliminate!” For more information about the Warrior Village Project visit: warriorvillageproject.com VISTACHAMBER.ORG
