It was in early March 2021 that a vibrant portrait of a suited and hatted pigeon took shape on the exterior wall of the Visitor Centre on Zagreb’s main square. It was the first sign of Street Triptych (Ulični triptih), a project launched by some of Zagreb’s leading mural artists to bring bright new hues to the city’s streets. The project serves as colourful proof that street art in Zagreb has come of age. More than just a matter of passing trends, it has become a joyful presence in public space, and an important ingredient in the city’s appeal to locals and visitors alike. Street Triptych is very much an ongoing project. Every three months, three artists will be invited to paint murals in city-centre locations. Open-air art is increasingly becoming something of a Zagreb trademark. Mural painting in particular has attracted a gifted cross-section of spray-can jockeys, illustrators with big ideas, and academically-trained artists who have taken to the streets as a way of establishing direct contact with the public. When the Croatian Society of visual Artists launched a scheme to decorate electricity substations in spring 2020, one of the chosen artists was the internationally-acclaimed comic-strip author Danijel Žeželj, famous for his work for Marvel, DC Comics and many more. Located on the corner of Draškovićeva and
Kralja Držislava Streets, Žeželj’s dynamic image of a running cat is a great example of how a picture can transform public space. So if we were to design a tourist trail taking in the best of Zagreb’s street art, what might it include? One of the best places to start would be Ribnjak park behind the Cathedral, where an entire wall was covered in murals during the Art Park project of summer 2019. Both Croatian and international artists were invited. Emerging local star Klarxy’s weird cross between a crocodile and submarine is one obvious highlight, although the seductive gaze of American artist Anthony Brooks’s cat-man has its fair share of admirers. Another crucial location is Martićeva Street. Tucked into a recess at Martićeva 24 is Igor Taritaš’s Stepenice (“Staircase”), an ingenious piece of visual trickery that appears to give you a through-the-window look at one of the apartments inside the building. A few steps further away on a corner of Barčićeva is Zagreb otvoreni grad (“Zagreb Open City”), an optimistic and welcoming social scene courtesy of prolific illustrator and street artist Miron Milić. West of the centre, alternative club Medika has commissioned a rich collection of murals on walls of its post-industrial compound on Pierottijeva Street. The sleeping figure known as Technicolour Dream, by well-known local

artists Lonac and CHEZ 186, is one of the most photographed street works in the city. Also attracting clicking cameras are Lora Elezović’s delightful murals in the Bundek Park south of the river. Based on Vilko Gliha Selan’s original illustrations for children’s classic Hedgehog’s Home (Ježeva kućica) by Branko Ćopić, they have proved enormously popular with promenading locals. Dedicated fans of street art should on no account miss the former Jedinstvo factory by the Sava riverbank. The building’s back wall is an outstanding open-air gallery of murals, specially commissioned from local artists in 2013. In a city that obviously has a thing about its felines, Monika Meglić’s charismatic black cat is the most memorable of a spectacular bunch. Making a huge contribution to Zagreb’s street-level arts scene is Pimp My Pump, an association started ten years ago to spruce up the blue water pumps scattered throughout Zagreb’ suburbs. Pimp My Pump decided to restore them to their former status, decorating them with faces or new colour schemes. By gifting creativity and humour to the humble pump, the project has created something of a Zagreb icon. And when you take to Zagreb’s streets in search of the best street art, you never know where in the city your journey might end.

Organized by the art collective, Pimp My Pump, a new project, Street Triptych showcases a very different street exhibition. It’s a unique all-year programme of street art masterpieces, offering a cross-section of the current local street art scene. Throughout the year, a series of urban surfaces will be made available while the streets will become a temporary art studio.

Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their works through a unique form of ‘exhibition in transition’. The content of Street Triptych will change in cycles – every three months three new works of art will appear on our canvases, signed by various Croatian artists. “Stop, look down and find a small town!” This is the message of a new art project Mali Zagreb (Little Zagreb) with its miniature installations depicting the facades of Zagreb’s residential buildings and shop windows. “The idea is to reflect the living space of our big world in miniature proportions, as well as to emphasize the importance of little things in life,” says the author, Filip Filković Philatz.
Although they are located in the city centre, the miniatures of Mali Zagreb are situated in unusual and unexpected places – on curbs, walls or fences. A special map, that includes the locations of these tiny installations has been created for those interested in immersing themselves in the experience!

Towards the end of spring, the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU) will present Murtić 100, a multimedia exhibition curated by Branko Franceschi. Croatians will thus mark one hundred years since the birth of Edo Murtić, a leading figure of high modernism and one of the most recognized Croatian artists of the second half of the 20th century. Along with the exhibition, the Modern Gallery will organize an international symposium on creative and political emancipation during the initial decades after the Second World War.
Murtić 100 also includes concerts, guided tours, workshops and street art.
