Prepared by Prof. Miroslav Šašić
1256
Béla IV decreed that Gradec was permitted to hold an annual fair on St. Mark’s Day. The fair lasted for seven days before and seven days after the feast of St. Mark (April 25).
1636 The members of the shoemakers’ guild in Zagreb were given land on which they planted their gardens. Since then, they gathered every year on Saint Gregory’s Day, 12 March, at the so-called Kantorščica to divide the plots among themselves. Since there were more shoemakers than plots of land, age took precedence over youth, which meant that the youngest members only received garden plots when an older member of the guild died.
1756 Zagreb witch trials were abolished. The Croatian Parliament passed a law stipulating that every conviction for witchcraft had to be submitted to the Emperor for approval. Maria Theresa then only permitted such trials with her express consent, and the proceedings soon ceased because no court dared to seek the Empress’s approval. The last women to be sentenced in Zagreb in 1756 were Arijana Vugrinec, Marija Fučkan, Marijana Brukec, Magda Benković and Doroteja Blašić, who were burned at the stake after being tortured for having ‘bewitched the feet of a certain Marija Frajt’.
1786 One topic of the city council meeting was the demolition of St. Mark’s Church. The idea was to make space for a market on the church grounds, meaning 32 market huts (‘hutice’) and 24 food stalls would be built. Fortunately, the proposal was dismissed and the church was saved from demolition.
1806 Ban Ivan Erdődy died. He was Croatian Ban from 1790 to 1806. His famous quote from 1791 reads: ‘One kingdom does not impose laws on another kingdom.’
1846 That year, a meeting was held at which the decision was made to establish the First Croatian Savings Bank—the first monetary institution in Croatia.
1846 Performance of the first opera in Croatian. The first opera in the Croatian language, Love and Malice by Vatroslav Lisinski, was first performed at the theatre in the Upper Town.
1866 Vjekoslav Frigan was elected mayor. At the beginning of his term in office, he decided to introduce the Croatian language into the city administration’s procedures. Furthermore, the bilingual German-Croatian street names were replaced by Croatian names.
1866 Emperor Franz Joseph I ratified the statutes of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (now HAZU). The idea of founding an academy as a scientific centre for the South Slavs emerged during the Illyrian movement, largely thanks to J. J. Strossmayer. This is reflected in its original name: Academia Scientiarum et Artium Slavorum Meridionalium.
1876 The first performance of the Zagreb ballerinas. The town dance teacher, Petar Cornelli, trained 12 girls who performed during the interval of the opera Lucrezia Borgia The performance was met with such great enthusiasm by the citizens of Zagreb that the young dancers had to repeat it three times in a packed theatre.
1891 A meeting was held at the Ministry of Trade in Budapest, at which approval was granted for the construction of a horse-drawn tramway in Zagreb.
1891 Commencement of initial works in the Botanical Gardens. The city donated a six-and-a-half-hectare plot of land, and the government provided 25,000 forints. The work was overseen by university professor Dr Antun Heinz and gardener Durhanek.
1906 Asteroid No. 589 was discovered and named ‘Croatia’ by astronomer August Kopff in honour of the founding of the Zagreb Observatory. It has a diameter of 28.5 kilometres and is located between Mars and Jupiter.
1906 Painter Slava Raškaj passed away in Stenjevec. She was deaf and mute from birth and began painting as a child. In 1895, she became a student of Bela Čikoša Sesija.
1916 Malnerić’s Tavern on Kaptol was demolished. At the beginning of the twentieth century, it was a popular meeting place for the residents of Zagreb. Farmers from the surrounding area would come there in the morning for a bite to eat. Deals were struck there and celebrated with an aldomaš—a feast marking the conclusion of an agreement— while those who had quarreled would reconcile over a bruderšaft, the ritual of toasting to renewed friendship. In the afternoon, the locals would come by for their customary wine spritzers.
1926 Establishment of Radio Zagreb. The Radio Club Zagreb provided its premises at Mark’s Square 9, and the Berlinbased company Telefunken installed the first equipment. Thus, the first radio station in Croatia — and far beyond — was born.
1946 The Society of the Brethren of the Croatian Dragon was dissolved on the grounds that it had insulted the honour of the Croatian people, and all its property was confiscated. After the founding of the Republic of Croatia, the society was revived along with its headquarters, the Dragon Tower above the Stone Gate.
1961 Founding of the Medveščak Sports Club. The club’s ice hockey section has been closely tied to Zagreb’s longstanding love of ice skating. Its peak came about ten years ago, when Medveščak competed in the KHL against top Russian, Finnish, and Swedish clubs. After this golden era— and 58 years of history—the club was officially dissolved in 2019 due to financial difficulties. Although the original Medveščak no longer exists, the tradition of ice hockey in Zagreb continues through a new club that has adopted its name and spirit, passing them on to new generations.
1976 Death of composer Ivo Tijardović, known for his famous operettas Mala Floramye and Splitski akvarel.
1976 The first woman to drive a ZET bus. Ms Nevenka Bišćan drove a bus on the Črnomerec-Podsused route.
2001 A replica of the Zagreb whale (Mesocetus agrami) has been installed in Podsused. Belgian expert Professor van Benden determined that the whale remains found in Podsused belonged to a species previously unknown, and he therefore named it after Zagreb: Mesocetus agrami.
2006 A statue of Barica the Market Woman (kumica Barica) was erected at Dolac Market, created by the sculptor Stjepan Gračan. The statue symbolises the hard-working women from the villages around Zagreb who have been coming to the city’s main market every day for centuries with baskets full of homemade products. “Kumica” is the common term for women who sell their products at Zagreb’s markets.

Ivan Meštrović and Nikola Tesla, two brilliant minds who became famous all around the world, have a lot in common in the impressive stories of their lives. Both were born in Croatia, educated in the AustrianHungarian Monarchy, both became US citizens. One became a member of the Academy in Vienna without any previous knowledge and without speaking German language. The other was proclaimed genius without a formal academic title and scientific career. Where did their lives intertwine?

The city and its inhabitants form a wonderful network that is deeply rooted in the past, telling a story about what the city once was and what it is today. The historical story of Zagreb is an interesting and colourful one. It is a story of numerous ups and downs that have led to the emergence of the vibrant city we know today. On this tour, we disentangle this web,
thread by thread, and discover how important the past really is for the city and whether the city influences its inhabitants or vice versa.

We can follow the footsteps of Italians in Zagreb from the Middle Ages and today they make an important part of the local history. Everyone looking for a tour in Italian language can follow them all across the centre of Zagreb – in Gradec, the hub of Italian craftsmen; Kaptol, where Italian builders lived; in Vlaška Street, where many merchants settled down. Their heritage is present in Zagreb’s artworks, on building facades and in interesting anecdotes. Meet them on this tour!

If you are an EU resident, with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you are entitled to medical treatment in Croatia that may become necessary during your trip. The EHIC isn’t a substitute for medical and travel insurance, but it entitles you to emergency medical assistance. EHIC won’t cover it all. It will cover urgent health care if necessary, even urgent health care of chronic or pre-existing diseases, but not if the goal of your trip is a medical treatment. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as for Croatian citizens.
