Prepared by Prof. Miroslav Šašić
1256 The first St Mark’s Market was held on Saint Mark’s Day. King Béla IV of Hungary granted Gradec the right to hold a fair for eight days before and eight days after the feast of St Mark. This marked the beginning of the tradition of spring fairs in Zagreb.
1716 Free wine for city officials was abolished. The city council decided to put an end to the custom of providing wine from the municipal cellar to all officials and employees on major public holidays.
1776 Following the disaster in Varaždin, Zagreb regained its status as the capital of Croatia. Maria Theresa ordered the relocation of the Ban and the Royal Council to Zagreb after a fire had completely destroyed Varaždin.
1806 Josip Karvančić wrote a letter in which he spoke out against the demolition of St Mark’s Church. The Zagreb District Assembly proposed to the city council that St. Mark’s Church be demolished, as it was “too small and cramped, and services were disrupted by noise during the fairs”. Thanks to the letter and the parish priest’s verbal explanation, this unusual proposal was rejected.
1846 The Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul moved into a new convent on Frankopanska Street. At the invitation of Juraj Haulik, they came to Zagreb to promote the Catholic education of young women. Haulik also purchased a meadow on the site of today’s Frankopanska Street and had the convent built there. The sisters first opened a primary school for girls within the convent, and later established a hospital. Until then, the town had only two hospitals: the military hospital in Nova Ves, which did not treat women, and the hospital run by friars in Harmica, where the admission of female patients was generally avoided.
1866 The city council has appointed the city’s first permanent dentist. It was 23-year-old Josip Hafner. He held this position for a full 42 years.
1866 The year of birth of Sandor Aleksander, a wholesaler and philanthropist who was the son of the famous Zagreb merchant Jonas Aleksander. He was an economist and made a lasting contribution to the humanitarian sector. During the First World War, he set up a soup kitchen in Zagreb for families whose members were fighting at the front. This kitchen later gave rise to the charity ‘Prehrana’.
1871 The year of birth of entrepreneur Ferdinand Budicki. In 1901, he owned the first car in Zagreb, committed the first traffic offence, founded the first Croatian automobile club and was involved in organising the first car race in Zagreb. In 1897 and 1898, he spent eight months travelling through Europe and Africa by bicycle, covering almost 17,000 kilometres. In 1905, he took to the skies in a hot-air balloon and flew to the Adriatic. On this occasion, postcards were dropped from the balloon, many of which reached their intended addresses, so that he can be regarded as a pioneer of airmail transport in Croatia.
1876 The first science lectures at the University of Zagreb – the beginning of science and mathematics education.
1886 The morgue at Mirogoj Cemetery was completed. For centuries, until the opening of the Mirogoj Central Cemetery and its morgue, the deceased had been taken directly from their homes to the place of burial.
1911 A meeting was held to establish the Građanski Zagreb sports club. It gained widespread recognition thanks to the outstanding achievements of its football team against leading European sides.
Građanski recorded notable victories over First Vienna FC, as well as over FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao during a tour of Spain in 1923. In 1936, the club also defeated Liverpool FC by a convincing 5–1. Its tradition is continued today by GNK Dinamo Zagreb.
1916 The Croatian Parliament declared Islam to be a recognised religion within the territory of the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia. In 1910, there were 204 Muslims living in the region of Banska Hrvatska.
1926 Hermann Bollé, an architect and restorer, died. He came to Zagreb from Cologne following an invitation from the Zagreb Cathedral Chapter and the Archdiocese. His most significant works include the restoration of the cathedral, the construction of the Franciscan and Protestant churches, the craft school, and the arcades at Mirogoj Cemetery.
1926 A foundation was set up to fund the construction of the Journalists’ Home. The foundation charter adopted on that occasion provided for the construction of a prestigious building in which all journalistic institutions were to be housed, and flats were to be allocated primarily to journalists. The home opened in 1930, and newspapers reported: ‘The Journalists’ Home is now a reality. Thanks to a solid foundation and a secure income, it offers journalists the opportunity to build up a financial base over time that enables them to successfully resolve their essential financial concerns.’
1946 The basketball club Sloboda—today known as KK Cibona—was founded during this period. It played its first match on 7 May at Šalata against Slavia Zagreb, losing 20–36. About a month and a half later, the team played its first official match. Over the years, the club underwent several name changes: SD Zagreb, Vihor (1948), Polet (1949), Lokomotiva (1950), and finally Cibona in 1975.
1951 The prototype of the ‘101’ type motor tram was completed at the ZET workshop. This led to the development of a locally designed model of modern tram, the mass production of which was taken over by the Croatian factory ‘Đuro Đaković’.
1971 The first issue of Hrvatski tjednik, a newspaper focused on cultural and social issues, was published. Its first editor was Igor Zidić, and it was later led by Vlado Gotovac. The paper closely followed the events of the Croatian Spring, documenting the turbulent developments of 1971.
1971 The University Computing Centre (SRCE) was established as the central institution of the Republic of Croatia for the development and promotion of computer science. It was founded by the University of Zagreb, with the founding decision signed by its then rector, Academician Ivan Supek. SRCE was officially opened in 1974, and its mainframe computer occupied an area of 400 square metres.
1986 The foundation stone for the Cibona Tower was laid. The construction project set several records: the complex was completed within a single year, with each storey of the tower built in an average of just four and a half days.
2016 A ‘fountain’ appeared at the corner of Slavonska and Marohnićeva. In fact, a resourceful Zagreb resident used photo editing to transform a large hole that had opened up at this busy junction into a “fountain,” earning the admiration of fellow citizens.

Kaptol and Gradec – bishops and judges, noblemen and citizens, peace and conflicts. These two settlements, divided by the Medveščak stream, and connected with Krvavi most bridge, were united in 1850 into Zagreb as we know today, starting a history of mayors and archbishops whose lives are full of interesting stories. One mayor was the first to pass the driving exam, another was „taken by water“ and the third was stabbed in the heart with a needle after he died. You can hear these and many other interesting stories on a tour that takes you through Zagreb’s historic old town.
