Prepared by Prof. Miroslav Šašić
February was once a very important and action-packed month in Zagreb. With the privilege of a free royal town, granted to them by King Bela IV in 1242, the inhabitants were given the right to elect a town judge. For six centuries, elections were held on 3 February, the feast day of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Gradec. In the second half of February, after the local elections were over, the residents of Zagreb celebrated exuberantly. In earlier centuries, people celebrated in masks on the streets of the city, but later the festivities moved to inns and upper town palaces. The glory of these Zagreb masked balls and lavish aristocratic balls, which were loud and sometimes turbulent, was known far and wide.
1641 The early days of the main town square. The city council decided to clear the gardens around the Manduševac spring and prepare the site for the future fairground. This created a new central town square, where large annual fairs were held until 1830. From 1725 to 1848, it was called Harmica. It got its name from the tax, the thirtieth, which was named after the Hungarian ‘harmitz’. A tax amounting to one-thirtieth of their value was levied on all goods offered for sale. It was then named after Ban Josip Jelačić, and after the Second World War it was called Republic Square. Many still remember the extensive renovation on the eve of the 1987 Universiade, when the people of Zagreb affectionately called it ‘the Ban’s Gorge’.
1786 Josip Galjuf died. He served as the Bishop of Zagreb, was a reformer of secondary education in Croatia, and a philanthropist who left his entire estate to the City of Zagreb for the benefit of the poor. During his lifetime, in 1781, he commissioned the construction of a house at Nova Ves 16 to provide care for elderly and infirm priests.
1806 Year of birth of lawyer and politician Franjo Kulmer. During the Illyrian movement, he strongly opposed the introduction of Hungarian as the official language in Croatia, and it seems that he also had influence at the Viennese court, as Josip Jelačić was allegedly appointed Croatian Ban by the Emperor on his recommendation.
1841 The Croatian-Slavonian Economic Society was founded. The founding meeting took place in the palace of Zagreb Bishop Haulik. Each of the 34 members and founders deposited 50 silver forints. Their main task was to make farming better. With the same goal in mind, the economic newspaper ‘Gospodarski list’ was published in 1842. The exhibitions they initiated were the precursors to the Zagreb Fair, or more precisely, the Zagreb Trade Fair.
1846 Purchase of the People’s House. This is a building constructed in 1844 by Count Dragutin Drašković on the ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity, which belonged to the Poor Clares. Drašković let the revivalist movements use the house for a modest fee. It housed the Croatian Economic Society and the Table of Seven, formerly Croatia’s supreme court.
1871 Bartol Felbinger died. The builder of old Zagreb, who constructed numerous palaces in the city and the oldest preserved house in Ban Jelačić Square. He died at the age of 86 in the municipal poorhouse, impoverished and completely forgotten.
1871 The founding of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. The first quodlibet (a concert performance featuring opera excerpts, overtures, and symphonic excerpts) was performed in Zagreb.
1876 The idea of marking noon with a cannon shot originated when City Councillor Đuro Deželić proposed allocating funds for the purchase of a cannon and gunpowder, along with a lump-sum payment to the individual “who, at exactly 12 noon, would fire a cannon from the clock tower of the Royal High School— aligned with the local meridian—to signal midday, followed by the ringing of bells in all the city’s churches.”
1891
Commencement of construction work on the bandstand in Zrinjevac.
1896 The beginnings of skiing in Zagreb. Franjo Bučar, a renowned athlete and pioneer of numerous sports disciplines in Croatia, organized a skiing excursion to the Zagreb area with fellow physical education teachers. “It was not without difficulty— some of the weaker skates broke (skiing was then known as snow skating), many participants tumbled down the slopes, but no one was injured.” Today, the successors of those first skiers confidently and proudly carve their way down the white slopes of ski resorts across Europe, leaving behind tracks that testify to a tradition that began exactly 130 years ago.
1896 Dr Ante Starčević died. He was a Croatian politician, publicist, and writer, and in the Croatian Parliament he emerged as one of the most passionate advocates of Croatian independence. In 1861, he co-founded the Party of Rights with Eugen Kvaternik.
1911 The city council decided to introduce water meters to monitor water consumption in all homes in the city.
1931 Painter Bela Čikoš Sesija died.
1931 Historian Milan Šufflay was murdered. This murder caused a major international scandal. Albert Einstein and Heinrich Mann sent a letter of protest to the International League for Human Rights in Paris, accusing the then Yugoslav regime of King Alexander of murdering the scientist.
1936 Opening of the tram depot in Trešnjevka. It was built to replace Zagreb’s first tram depot, which was located on the site of today’s Nikola Tesla Technical Museum.
1941 Writer Ivo Kozarčanin was killed in front of the barracks on Ilica Street. While the guard claimed he had been attacked, the public widely believed the incident to be a politically motivated killing orchestrated by the police.
1941 Volume 1 of Mate Ujević’s Croatian Encyclopedia was published.
1951 The Zagreb Academic Judo Club was founded (since 1952 1952, the Mladost Academic Judo Club).
1951 The Croatian Heritage Foundation was established and has, for seventy-five years, fostered connections between the homeland and the Croatian diaspora through organised visits of emigrants, members of Croatian ethnic communities and their descendants, as well as visits to emigrant organisations abroad, complemented by numerous cultural, professional and public events.
1981 The odd–even license plate rule was abolished. Introduced in the late 1970s as part of austerity measures and a so-called long-term economic stabilization program, the regulation limited driving on certain days to vehicles with either even or odd license plates. As the measure failed to reduce fuel consumption, it was repealed in February 1981.

VR (Virtual Reality) Cinema KEK is the only specialized VR cinema in Croatia. The films can be watched throughout the month and start every hour on the hour from 15:00 to 22:00.
Tickets: 30 minutes before the first screening at the cinema box office and online via the cinema’s website.
EVEREST — Journey to the Top of the World - a moving documentary VR journey inspired by the tragically unfinished quest of legendary alpinist Ueli Steck. The director Jonathan Griffith and Sherpa Tenji attempt to fulfill Ueli’s dream: to climb Everest and Lhotse without supplemental oxygen. Set off from the heart of the French Alps, traverse the surreal landscapes of the Himalayas and experience crevasses, avalanches, nights under the starry sky and views from the roof of the world. A story of friendship, loyalty, and the strength of the human spirit — now in breath taking VR.
Paper Birds – A poetic animated VR story about a boy whose musical talent opens doors to invisible worlds. Music as a guide through shadows, fears and emotions that cannot be put into words.
From Origin to Consciousness includes two short VR films: An epic tale of Earth’s evolution and an intimate journey into what makes us human – our consciousness. Into Space - 1st and 2nd Step - From Apollo to future missions to Mars: see the Moon from the astronaut’s cabin, the Shackleton crater and the red landscapes of Mars from a first-person perspective.
Ayahuasca – Kosmic Journey – A Shipibo shaman guides you through a ritual that transforms the subconscious into a universe of visions. An intense, meditative and visually spectacular VR experience.
The Soloist (Alex Honnold) — Stand ‘shoulder to rock’ with today’s best free solo climber using state-ofthe-art 3D/360° technology. Without a rope, at the edge of what is possible – and suddenly you are right in the thick of things.
Hunter-Gatherers — The first Croatian VR documentary by Davor Rostuhar about the everyday life of the Hadza people in Tanzania: a universal story about humans, nature and community.

Kaptol and Gradec – bishops and judges, noblemen and citizens, peace and conflicts. These two settlements, divided by the Medveščak stream, and connected with Krvavi most bridge, were united in 1850 into Zagreb as we know today, starting a history of mayors and archbishops whose lives are full of interesting stories. One mayor was the first to pass the driving exam, another was „taken by water“, and the third was stabbed in the heart with a needle after he died. You can hear these and many other interesting stories on
a tour that takes you through Zagreb’s historic old town.

Both were born in Croatia, educated in the AustrianHungarian Monarchy, both became US citizens. If you are an EU resident, with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you are entitled to medical treatment in Croatia that may become necessary during your trip. The EHIC isn’t a substitute for medical and travel insurance, but it entitles you to emergency medical assistance. EHIC won’t cover it all. It will cover urgent health care if necessary, even urgent health care of chronic or pre-existing diseases, but not if the goal of your trip is a medical treatment. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as for Croatian citizens.
