With the sun shining high above and the blue skies seemingly endless, Zagreb is at its best in summer. The events calendar in the Croatian capital is packed throughout the year, but the middle months offer variety and energy on a different level. The green spaces are at their most verdant, enticing visitors and locals to enjoy outdoor creativity, while the festival season kicks into high gear as the stars come to town. To say there is a lot going on in Zagreb over the summer would be the understatement of the century.

Of course, there are highlights. The 29th Cest is d’Best street art festival paints the capital into vibrant colours and twists it into new shapes all at once, and the popular Baš Naš festival continues this excitement, filling Zagreb’s most picturesque settings with exciting sights, sounds, colours and smells. Then there is Summer at Matoš and Evenings at Grič, the former providing picturesque entertainment under chestnut trees while the latter is all about art at its most classical. Zrinjevac Park becomes the centre of dance during the excellent Dance Evenings at Zrinjevac festival.

This year, the International Folklore Festival will be especially meaningful, commemorating 1100 years since the coronation of King Tomislav. The anniversary is also celebrated in a grand finale of the Zagreb Classic festival, where the premiere oratorio Anno Domini 925. Kralj Tomislav — composed by Matej Meštrović and conducted by Jonathan Griffith — will be performed by the HNK Orchestra and a distinguished US choir. Other highlights of the festival include performances by renowned tenor Francesco Meli and virtuoso violinist Julian Rachlin. The festival also features shows by tenor Francesco Meli and soloist Julian Rachlin. Finally, if you’re looking to escape the heat and get up high above the city, follow the locals and head to Sljeme peak on the marvellous Medvednica mountain, where activities, flavours, and secrets await. You can expect all that and much more this summer in Zagreb.

Zagreb Classic Open Air Festival

19/6 .. 2/7

www.infozagreb.hr/en/zagreb-classic-en

One of the most highly anticipated events on the summertime calendar, the magical Zagreb Classic brings high culture into the city’s open spaces. As ever, the program features elite musicians from around the world, bringing the finest talent to the charming setting of King Tomislav Square for special nights of classical music, opera, and orchestral interpretations of modern masterpieces, among other delights. Bring a blanket, grab a space on the grass, and get ready for the most exquisite harmonies and melodies to fill the summer night sky.

The Zagreb Classic has been a popular summertime event since 2016, creating a truly sumptuous atmosphere. This year, the lineup is as fabulous as we’ve come to assume, as Genoa-born tenor Francesco Meli brings his iconic romantic tones to town. Elsewhere, Lithuanian violinist and former Young Musician of the Year Julian Rachlin will serenade the skies, and the festival comes to a close with the first performance of “Anno Domini 925. Kralj Tomislav,” an oratorio by HNK Orchestra and a choir from the United States, composed by Matej Meštrović and conducted by Jonathan Griffith.

There’s no better way to experience elite musicians on a truly unique stage this summer. Entry to all the shows is entirely free, and the atmosphere is just about as accessible as it gets, making the Zagreb Classic a brilliant night out for families, dates, experienced classical music fans, first timers, and anyone else. Music is made to be savoured, and there is something special about embracing the most classical of tones in one of Zagreb’s most beautiful spaces. Enjoy!
