INTRODUCTION Zagreb is about to settle into a different rhythm as the busy summer season draws to a close. The terraces are still bustling and the city streets are still as vibrant as ever, but the cultural calendar takes over, and doors across Zagreb are thrown open to the curious. For anyone interested in film, music, art, architecture, history, or simply having a fabulous time, autumn is a tremendous time to visit the Croatian capital. Zagreb Museum Weekend is a pretty good place to start, with museums across the city opening their doors for a packed programme of exhibitions, tours and other events. Zagreb Design Week takes a city-wide approach too, with programmes at 30 partner locations before its main programme moves to the renovated Academy of Fine Arts, featuring the international ZGDW Award.

Zagreb Opera Festival, HNK Archives
The Zagreb Opera Festival is one of the undoubted highlights of the calendar, a red-letter event no matter the season, bringing 10 days of performances to the Croatian National Theatre and other venues around town. The Zagreb Film Festival promises to be as engaging as ever, before the city’s book lovers take over in November with Interliber, Croatia’s biggest literary gathering. If visual art (with a little bit of history) is more your thing, make a beeline for Klovićevi Dvori, where the autumn programme includes the third chapter in the gallery’s Vlaho Bukovac series, concentrating on his Prague period.
It isn’t just about creativity. The Zagreb Marathon takes over the centre in early October, while Open House Zagreb offers a completely different way to explore the city, as many of Zagreb’s most fascinating buildings and spaces are open to the public. The Croatian capital is at its most ambitious in autumn, a season that refuses to be pigeonholed. You can spend a morning looking at paintings, an afternoon peeking inside gorgeous buildings, and an evening watching a brand new film. That variety is unmistakably Zagreb.
