HOW TO USE YOUR PASS Before you use your York Pass, please note the following important points: • Your York Pass is programmed to be activated the first time it is used at an attraction.

• It will then be active for the day or consecutive days.

• One day comprises of one calendar day, not a 24 hour period.

The pass will expire at midnight on the last day of its duration.

• Each York Pass is allocated a unique QR code, which is swiped at each attraction visited.

• The York Pass is also subject to a “purse value” of maximum gate prices related to the number of days. For example, with a one day adult pass you can visit up to £60 worth of attractions. Once you have reached your “purse value” for the total duration of your pass, the pass will also expire. At each attraction visited the attraction admission price is deducted from the purse value. Note: Passes can only be used at each attraction once.

At the Attraction When you get to the attraction the benefits of the York Pass become clear. Each participating attraction has installed a QR Code reader to ensure convenience and ease of access for all York Pass holders.

• Go to the admission point bearing the York Pass signs or follow the instructions set out on the attraction page.

• The attendant will record your pass details.

• The entry price for the attraction will be deducted from your York Pass.

Please Note The York Pass is non-transferable. No replacements or refunds can be offered for lost or stolen cards. BARLEY HALL

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval house, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York.

CLIFFORD’S TOWER Storm the tower for stunning panoramic views over Old York, the ideal starting point for any visit to the city.

This imposing tower is almost all that remains of York Castle and was originally built by William the Conqueror. In its time, the tower has served as a prison and a royal mint, as well as the place where Henry VIII had the bodies of his enemies put on public display.

MERCHANT ADVENTURERS’ HALL

The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s medieval marvels.

Situated in beautiful gardens in the centre of York, it is open for public use as museum, wedding and hospitality venue and meeting place some 650 years after construction began in 1357.

Explore the Great Hall, Undercroft and Chapel and discover remarkable collections of silver, furniture and paintings. An audio tour plus written guides in foreign languages available. The Hall is fully accessible via the Fossgate entrance.

An acknowledged “hidden gem”, the Quilt Museum and Gallery opens for its final season at St Anthony’s Hall in 2015.

Our exhibition programme has a colourful highlight. Internationally acclaimed guest curator Kaffe Fassett has created 15 new quilts in response to those from our heritage collection. See the Ancestral Gifts exhibition, 15 May – 5 September, at its only UK venue. We’re situated in the smallest of York’s four medieval guild halls, opposite the Black Swan pub.

THE ROMAN BATH

How many pubs in Britain can boast a 2000 year old Roman bath house in their cellar! Descend 5 metres below the bar room and into the world of the legionaries.

Excavated in 1930 while digging a new cellar, a modern steel walkway suspended above the ancient remains now takes visitors through the Tepidarium (warm room), Caldarium (hot steam room) and Fridarium (cold plunge pool), before returning to the modern world and perhaps a drink at the bar. York’s real history, minus the boring bits!

For 30 years the volunteers of the Royal Observer Corps watched for nuclear Armageddon.

At a time of crisis 60 men and women would be entombed within ‘No20 Group Control’ ready to plot nuclear explosions and radioactive fallout across Yorkshire. Inside, the brutal concrete structure is a chilling Cold War time capsule where original monitoring and communications equipment sit alongside the necessities of life; a canteen, a dormitory and support systems designed to last just 30 days. FREE THINGS TO DO IN YORK Watching your wallet and seeking free things to do during your York stay? There are plenty of ways to see the city on a shoestring: City Walls See York from above when you wander along the walls. First built by the Romans in 71AD and covering over two miles, they have guarded the city through some of its most tumultuous history. Around 2.5 million walk the walls each year and it takes approximately two hours to complete a full circuit. There are five main bars or gateways, one Victorian gateway, one postern (a small gateway) and 45 towers – check each off as you go!

York Cat Trail If you are a cat lover you are in for a treat when you follow the York Cat Trail.

The furry felines are part of the city’s history; statues have been dotted on buildings around York for centuries and were originally created to frighten away mice and rats. Follow the trail from its beginning outside York Glass – home to York Lucky Cats – in the Shambles and look closely above doorways and down ginnels until you have found them all.

National Railway Museum The largest railway museum in the world is located here in York and features a fascinating insight into the world of trains. From the social history of rail transport to the carriages that transported royalty, the design of the Eurostar or the arrival of the well-travelled and much-loved Paddington Bear, you will find it all here.

Museum Gardens A serene space in the centre of the city, York Museum Gardens offer visitors a lush, idyllic spot in which to pause for thought. Bordered by the City Walls, River Ouse and the awe-inspiring ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, this is parkland that is steeped in history. The early English and Romanesque ruins dominate the gardens and the other architectural spots within the site are connected to the abbey: the 12th century Gatehall was once the main entrance to the abbey’s grounds, while the medieval half-timbered Hospitium alongside the river was once a guesthouse for abbey visitors.

Guided Walking Tours Association of Voluntary Guides Free city walking tours leave every day at 10.15am, 2.15pm and 6.45pm in the summer from outside the York Art Gallery, Exhibition Square. Tours run mornings only during the winter at 10.15am and evening walks take place in August and September only. There is no need to book – just turn up. This service is run by the Association of Voluntary Guides.

WALKS & TOURS Holgate Windmill Holgate Windmill is an18th-century corn mill within the city of York, now in full working order after a restoration project completed in 2012. The mill produces stoneground wholemeal flour for sale.
