Suffragettes June Watch out for this exciting new community theatre co-production by York Theatre Royal and Pilot Theatre. Performed in the streets of York, the production will tell the story of York’s suffragette movement.

Betway UK Snooker Championship 28 November - 10 December The York Barbican will once again host snooker's top stars at the Betway UK Championship this year, one of snooker’s Triple Crown events alongside the World Championship and the Masters.

York in the Blitz 11, 12 & 13 August This three day event is set to sweep York back to the 1940s in memory of those who fought during WWII. There’ll be an open air cinema, tea dances, living history displays, and more to celebrate York’s past and present.

The Proms in the Museum Gardens 9 July York Museum Gardens will be the stunning backdrop to the inaugural York Proms, an open air picnic concert celebrating popular classical music with a rousing proms finale, champagne and strawberries.

Britain's Home of Chocolate York is a city built from chocolate. Other cities grew on steel, coal or wool, but York’s fame and fortune came from the sweeter stuff thanks to its dedicated chocolatiers. Some of the world’s most well-known names in chocolate came from York - KitKat, Smarties and Aero were all born in the city. Though York has changed over the centuries it remains Britain's Home of Chocolate. This year is an extra special year for chocolate in York as we celebrate 250 years of Terry’s, one of history’s most celebrated confectioners.

The iconic Terry's Chocolate Orange was created in York at Terry’s Chocolate Factory and still remains a household item known and enjoyed across the world.

Visit the new exhibition at York's Chocolate Story and discover how Terry’s became world famous or delve into York’s Sweet Past at York Castle Museum on a chocolatey tour of sweets galore. 40th anniversary

York Early Music Festival Friday 7 - Saturday 15 July

Widely regarded as a jewel in the crown of the city’s many festivals, York Early Music Festival is celebrating a significant 40th anniversary in 2017, when it will welcome musicians and music lovers from across the world to revel in what is set to be a very special time.

Presenting music from across five centuries, and performing in some of the most enchanting historic churches, guildhalls and performing houses of the medieval city of York, a special programme has been created in this anniversary year. There’s something to delight everyone, from the musical novice to the experienced sage.

Five Festival highlights in 2017 1. Guest artists during this landmark year include the internationally acclaimed vocalists I Fagiolini, directed by Robert Hollingworth, honouring the music of Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi with a promenade show in York Minster.

The performance is presented together with virtuoso period instrumentalists, the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble.

2.The Sixteen, widely recognised as one of the world’s greatest choirs, with an international reputation for excellence, are much-loved regulars at the Festival. Here in the UK, they

are ‘The voices of Classic FM’, and are revered the length and breadth of the country thanks to their annual Choral Pilgrimage. Directed by Harry Christophers, this concert will make full use of the Minster’s magnificent acoustic.

3. Winners of the 2015 NCEM International Young Artists Competition Ensemble prize, the Consone String Quartet has gone on to acquire more prestigious awards and scholarships, and has given performances at the Cadogan Hall, Edinburgh Festival and at Buckingham Palace. This is an exciting return to York.

4. Come along and sing… get involved in the festival and find yourself a singing part in the 40-part Spem in Alium, by Thomas Tallis.

5. 9 days, 30 performances, 10 venues and 50 hours of music.

40 Years of Musical Magic Set up in 1977, the York Early Music Festival has taken place for the past forty years. The historic city was chosen as a host venue due to its many architecturally significant guildhalls, churches, and of course York Minster, which reflects the period of the music (circa 1250 - 1750.)

In 2000, the Festival inspired the creation of the National Centre for Early Music in the historically important church of St Margaret’s, Walmgate. The NCEM is a national organisation and vibrant venue for music and learning.

Crafters will love The York Makery - a modern crafter’s paradise! There’s an abundance of arts and craft supplies as well as fun classes to take part in. Heima is a hip hardware store which blends modern and traditional homewares with everyday DIY essentials.

Whether you’re looking for vintage treasures or unique gifts, Fossgate and Walmgate to the east of York Minster are streets full of eclectic offerings.

The city sparkles to the south of the Minster, where high quality jewellers are sprinkled along Petergate. Chocolate City Take a walk through the chocolate heritage of York and imagine life in

the former home of the Terry family at Goddards House and Gardens. Hear the fascinating tale of chocolate’s journey from Central America to York at York’s Chocolate Story, where you can make your own sweet treats. Foodie Festivals Every year in September, The York Food & Drink Festival fills the city with delicious sights, smells and tastes for a full week.

I would kick off my York Foodie Adventure at The Star Inn the City (of course!), overlooking the river and the fabulous Museum Gardens. Visiting the city in September gives you the chance to take a leisurely stroll around the York Food & Drink Festival.

The stalls always have a great selection of the best in Yorkshire produce and some from further afield; perfect for grazing and a little light shopping. For a mid-morning swift espresso and a catch-up with the locals about nothing in particular, I'd relax in one of York's continental-style cafés. Later in the day, I would head for the shadows of York Minster and Mr P’s Curious Tavern… which serves a quirky blend of small plate dishes: regional, international, seasonal - and with tipples to match!

Mark Addy’s Culture-Vulture Adventure

Award-winning Actor and Patron of York Culture Awards I would begin my York Culture-Vulture Adventure at York Art Gallery before lunch to see the new world-class Centre of Ceramic Art. After admiring the artwork, my afternoon would be filled discovering the delights of the foodie culture of York in the beautiful cafés and inns of Gillygate and Fossgate. To close the curtains I would head to The Great Yorkshire Fringe. It’s my favourite festival of the year, bringing comedy, variety and family entertainment to the heart of the city. The Literature Festival and JORVIK Viking Festival are also in my calendar.

Actor and Pantomime-Royalty at York Theatre Royal I am incredibly fortunate to spend almost 3 months every year living in the city of York.

It’s like having a lover; I leave with a heavy heart and return with much excitement!

My favourite Family Adventures in this magical city are hard to preference but Bettys Café Tea Rooms, (big and little) are a treat comparable to nothing else in the world; my wedding cake was made up of Bettys Fondant Fancies! Then there is the National Railway Museum which is a wonderful timeline of British history shown through the incredible technology of rolling stock through the ages. My family and I never tire of wandering around this museum.

To get my adrenaline pumping I would start off an action-packed adventure whizzing around the go-karting tracks at York Motorsports Village. For an afternoon of thrills I’d take the short trip to Dalby Forest to swing through the trees like Tarzan and cross the valley on a zip wire at Go Ape. If you’ve got a day to spare head to Hull and come face to face with sharks at The Deep or get up close to live piston engines at Yorkshire Air Museum on Thunder Day. An evening to fray the nerves would be filled with the stuff of nightmares on a ghost tour. Speaking of nightmares, brave Hallowscream at York Maze at Halloween - a test for even the most daring thrill-seeker!

York Literature Festival

Join the city-wide celebration of York’s Viking heritage at the JORVIK Viking Festival. This annual festival brings together 40,000 visitors from around the world and features exciting battle re-enactments, a recreated Viking encampment and guided tours.

Bookworms will love the Literature Festival, with workshops and open-mics as well as the chance to see famous writers talk about their work. There’s also celebration of the spoken word, with music, comedy, cinema and theatre to enjoy across the city.

The annual Early Music Festival brings together music-lovers from across the world. This year is extra special because it’s the festival’s 40th anniversary!

Featuring more than 20 paintings and watercolours, it will highlight the beautiful and classical women for which the artist is most famous and demonstrate the modernity of Moore’s approach.

Aesthetica Art Prize Exhibition 26 May - 3 September 2017 For a fifth year, the Aesthetica Art Prize presents an exhibition of innovative works from today’s leading artists both established and emerging. Presenting the works of shortlisted artists, the show unites an international community of creative practitioners, whose projects touch upon key cultural, social, environmental and economic themes within the categories

of Photography and Digital Art, Painting and Drawing, Three Dimensional Design and Sculpture and Video, Installation and Performance. The 2017 edition provides a cohesive commentary on the way that we inhabit the earth.

Paul Nash and the Uncanny Landscape: An exhibition curated by John Stezaker 20 October 2017 - 18 February 2018.

Paul Nash is one of the most important artists of the early twentieth century. He was key in the development of modernism in Britain, bringing abstraction and surrealism to the attention of audiences in this country. In this three-part exhibition, contemporary artist John Stezaker brings together works by Nash and his circle.

It’s hard to believe the bustling city of York was once empty meadowland.

The city as we now know it began with the Romans, when 5000 men from the ninth legion marched from Lincoln to set up camp and conquer in 71 AD. They built a huge fortress where the river Ouse and Foss joined, and York, or Eboracum, was born.

ot only did the Romans create York, they lived and ruled in it for the next three centuries, turning it into a city of global importance.

One emperor was acclaimed and two died here, including Constantine the Great, whose statue is outside York Minster.

Only 2% of Roman remains have been rediscovered in York, so most of the Roman city still remains a secret. The longest stretch of surviving Roman Fortress wall is in the Museum Gardens, including the Multangular Tower - one of eight defensive towers and the most prominent and intact structure remaining from the Roman walls. In 1930, renovations to a tavern on St Sampson's Square uncovered the remains of a Roman bathhouse.

The caldarium and plunge bath have been excavated, and visitors can now see the place where Roman soldiers and citizens came to relax underneath the tavern. Their building techniques were so advanced and the Roman concrete was so hard-wearing that the footprints of the Roman Fortress on the Minster side of the river and the civilian settlement around Micklegate are still there today. The lost amphitheatre is yet to be discovered, but research starts around Kings Manor this spring with the hope of locating it.

The armies of ancient Rome will march on York again this summer. There’ll be military parades, siege weapon demonstrations and guided walks at the Eboracum Roman Festival, back for its second year from the 1 to 4 June. A Roman camp in the Museum Gardens will showcase domestic Roman life and there’ll be stalls selling themed gifts. The Yorkshire Museum is home to some of Britain’s most significant Roman treasures, and there’ll be activities and workshops in the museum throughout the festival. The museum holds the bones and skulls of six people who came to Eboracum from all over the Empire, whose remains and possessions tell us much about how they lived. Other highlights include a sculpture of the head of Constantine and the tombstone of a French soldier from the famous Ninth Legion.

Although the Roman Empire eventually faded, from the walls they built to all that remains undiscovered, their legacy lives on.

Once the Roman stronghold of Eboracum and later the royal city at the heart of the kingdom of Northumbria, York was stormed by the Vikings in 866 and became Jorvik.

orvik grew to be the capital of a new Viking kingdom which ruled over large parts of the North and East of England. The last of the notorious Nordic kings to rule in York was Eric Bloodaxe - a name which fits the archetypal image of a bloodthirsty Viking warrior.

Although famed for being fearsome fighters, after the invasion most Vikings led peaceful lives as craftsmen, fishermen and farmers. Craftsmen were especially skilled in high-temperature industries, working with lead, silver, gold and glass and selling their products across Yorkshire. The Vikings were also great traders with worldwide links, so exotic goods were aplenty in York making it a cosmopolitan marketplace.

Life for those in Viking York was closeknit, with small buildings used as both homes and workshops. Each building centred around a large hearth and the floors were simply made of earth.

Experience the hustle and bustle of Viking life and join 40,000 visitors from around the world for a special living history experience in York. The JORVIK Viking Festival, which takes place every February, brings a Viking encampment, exciting battle re-enactments, guided tours and talks. Celebrate ‘Jolablot’, a Viking celebration marking the coming of Spring and discover how the Norse settlers lived, what they traded and what they wore. Pose your questions to the resident Vikings and if you’re feeling brave, take part in the ‘Strongest Viking’ competition.

2017 is the year of the Viking in York, with the opening of the newly reimagined JORVIK Viking Centre in spring and the return of the Vale of York Viking Hoard to the Yorkshire Museum in Summer. The JORVIK Viking Centre is the ultimate experience of Vikings in the city, built on the site of a Viking village dug

up and discovered during the 1970’s within the Coppergate area of York.

Walk over a glass floor and explore the excavations to see to-scale remains of Viking-age houses as they would have been unearthed. Travel on moving time capsules through a cityscape of Jorvik and get up close to artefacts including human remains. Don’t miss the Galleries, where there will be a huge collection of over 1,000 Viking objects. Vikings ate what they could hunt, fish or gather so their diets were meatheavy and full of rich stews. For locally sourced produce and mouth-watering meaty meals which could satisfy the most ravenous raiders, stop for a spot of lunch at Walmgate Ale House, where you can enjoy Yorkshire puddings stuffed with pulled beef and lashings of gravy.

The Vikings sold items like pottery and leather to buy materials such as jewellery, spices and glass. You won’t be able to trade leather to buy your goods, but you can breathe in spicy aromas similar to the exotic spices in a Viking marketplace at Rafi’s Spice Box, browse beautiful leather footwear at Charles Clinkard and peruse fine jewellery at Bradley’s Jewellers.

To reach Jorvik, traders would travel overland or in boats along the river Ouse. Cruise through the city with York Boat to discover the Viking city by water or follow in the footsteps of the Norse travellers with a historical walking tour of York. hen Hollywood superstars descend on Yorkshire it’s not always just to take in the breath-taking scenery.

Since 2002, Screen Yorkshire has been championing film and TV in the county, attracting high profile productions and world-class casts and crew to the county through its specialist content investment and production support activities.

You’ve probably seen and you’ll definitely have heard of ITV’s drama series Victoria (2016), the first production to film at Church Fenton Yorkshire Studios, following the early life of Queen Victoria. The luxurious rooms of Buckingham Palace are filmed inside the large scale studio space between York and Leeds, a former RAF base.

The Queen’s residence is also played by the magnificent Castle Howard, a historic house which certainly isn’t camera shy; it also masqueraded as Brideshead in Brideshead Revisited (2008).

Hollywood superstars including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bill Nighy took to the quaint market town of Helmsley for the remake of the iconic British comedy Dad’s Army (2016), while York took centre stage in Dark Angel (2016), a series based on the true story of a Victorian poisoner.

Rowntree Park, Clementhorpe and Holy Trinity Church are all featured in the murky two-part crime drama. The iconic York Minster served as a dramatic backdrop to scenes in Death Comes to Pemberley (2014), the film sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and St William’s College and Treasurer’s House were both beautiful backgrounds for Bill (2015), a comedy about William Shakespeare.

Spotlights shone on the classrooms of York University for X&Y (2014), a biopic of a former York College student with autism who landed a spot at the prestigious International Mathematics Olympiad. More recently, Stone Trough Books on Walmgate made a cosy set for the new Mad to Be Normal (2017) with David Tennant playing renowned Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing.

The stunning North Yorkshire Moors Railway was the setting for emotional scenes in the First World War epic Testament of Youth (2014) and Goathland station is where Harry Potter stood before stepping foot onto the Hogwarts Express. Aysgarth Falls, the famous triple tier waterfall, is featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) starring Kevin Costner and the picturesque market town of Grassington is where much of the romantic Wuthering Heights (1992) was captured. The newer take on the classic Wuthering Heights (2011) won best cinematography at the Venice Film Festival, with the Yorkshire landscape being described as ‘another character’.

Plumpton Rocks, a breath-taking area of outstanding beauty in Harrogate was explored in Swallows and Amazons (2016), a film following four children who sail on their own to an island. One of the most ambitious TV dramas ever undertaken in the UK, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel (2015), spent four months filming in Yorkshire at locations including The Shambles, Lady Peckett’s Yard and York Minster. Gripping gangster drama Peaky Blinders (2013 - ongoing) starring Cillian Murphy has been acclaimed for its set design and beautifully shot scenes with help from the backdrop of stunning period Yorkshire locations including Newby Hall and Gardens near York.

The National Railway Museum in York has a starring role in upcoming Victoria and Abdul (2017) alongside York’s very own star, Dame Judy Dench. Originally from York, she plays the leading royal role in the biographical drama about Queen Victoria’s relationship with a young clerk from India. With more exciting new films such as Keepers in the pipeline, produced by York based Production Company and starring Gerard Butler, the cameras will keep on rolling in Yorkshire.

Where to Watch You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to unique cinema venues in York. Locals love the York City Screen, an independent riverside Picturehouse. Grab a drink from the riverside café-bar, and cosy up in one of three luxurious screens to enjoy a cult-classic or a big-screen blockbuster. Stately Stories Helmsley Walled Garden

Just like the enchanting story of The Secret Garden in the much-loved novel, the story of Helmsley Walled Garden is one of rejuvenation and transformation. It was originally built in 1758 to grow crops for the Feversham family at Duncombe Park, but with the lack of gardeners after World War One, the estate opened to the public as a market garden. By 1982 the garden had fallen into disuse and become overgrown and hidden.

Over a decade later, a local lady named Alison Ticehurst found the secret garden and was inspired to restore it. She was successful in her endeavours and now the public garden is beautifully blooming.

On the morning of 9th November 1940, a chimney fire blew into a huge blaze at Castle Howard, destroying the Howard residence’s defining decorative dome which collapsed into the Great Hall.

Almost a third of the building was left open to the skies and it took twenty years to begin restoration on the dome!

Now the dome is shining brighter than ever after a re-gild of the cupola lantern using 23.5 carat gold leaf in 2016.

In 1916, Lord and Lady Chesterfield purchased Beningbrough for just £15,000.

Lord Chesterfield died in 1933 but Lady Chesterfield stayed at Beningbrough until her death in 1957. She was a force to be reckoned with, especially to the young airmen billeted at Beningbrough during the war. One of the airmen got into trouble for treading on her plant beds, she ended their dispute with ‘Good luck, boys, and keep off my vegetables!’

With the highest concentration of stately homes, castles and gardens in England, Yorkshire is a haven of historic houses. As well as offering a great day out to create your own memories, many of these places have their own stories to tell.

The largest monastic ruin in Britain had humble beginnings. Following a dispute at St. Mary’s Abbey in York in 1132, a group of thirteen misbehaving monks were exiled. The archbishop gave the monks a site by the River Skell in North Yorkshire as a place to reform and live a simple life.

Ironically, the magnificent abbey grew to be wealthy and powerful and by the middle of the 13th century the abbey was one of England’s richest religious houses!

The stunning and vibrantly decorated church of Christ the Consoler in the grounds of Newby Hall surprisingly stands as a testament to tragedy. In 1871, Lord Grantham’s daughter Mary had the church built in memory of her 23 year old son Frederick, who was kidnapped and killed by brigands in Greece. The church was built with money that Mary was gathering to pay Frederick’s ransom before the news of his murder arrived.

The magnificent memorial features stained glass and superb stone carving.

It’s hard to believe the Walled Garden at Scampston Hall began as a humble kitchen garden and that it was derelict for nearly fifty years. In 1994, Sir Charles and Lady Legard moved into the Scampston estate and soon enlisted the help of leading garden designer Piet Oudolf to transform the neglected grounds. Now a modern masterpiece, the contemporary garden is divided into a number of distinct rooms to explore, each striking and unique.

South of York

Selby and Tadcaster If according to George VI ‘the history of York is the history of England’, then the same can also be said of the area just south of the city too, which includes the bustling market towns of Selby and Tadcaster. Selby is dominated by its beautiful Abbey, which is nearly 1,000 years old. Believed to be the birthplace of Henry I, the son of William the Conqueror, and with its internationallyfamous Washington window which links to the family of the first president of the United States, the Abbey draws in visitors from around the world. Recently it hosted the wedding of a Taiwanese pop star, and has since become a ‘must see’ location for international visitors.

The streets surrounding the Abbey offer a range of small shops and eateries, with a growing food scene in the town. That’s helped by Selby’s annual food festival, held each August. It’s a chance to sample food and drink from around the world, and makes a great family day out. There are also regular farmers’ markets held

on the first Wednesday of each month.

Tadcaster, meanwhile, is a small market town with a big personality.

Half way between York and Leeds, the town is home to three famous breweries dating back to at least the 14th century. They draw their water from the River Wharfe, as it makes its way through the heart of Yorkshire from the Dales to the Ouse south of York and eventually into the Humber.

It’s a real cyclists’ town too, surrounded by ideal cycling country of gently rolling hills including the nearby site of the Battle of Towton. The town is home to two independent bike shops and there are a range of small independent shops and cafés too, offering exactly the right type of respite from a day in the saddle.

But the area is not content to rest on its past. Selby is home to the brand new Summit Adventure, which boasts a ski simulator that’s the only one of its kind

outside of London. There’s also a BMX track, aerial trekking, adventure play, climbing and bowling too. It’s all under one roof, and with a range of dining experiences on offer too, it’s an ideal family activity for those not-so-sunny days.

And how about something completely different? The area south of Selby is home to Drax Power Station, which has undergone massive new investment to enable it to make power using sustainable biomass. You can visit the site, and learn more about the 1,400 foot long turbine hall, and the speciallymade railway wagons that bring in the biomass material. It’s a tour like no other.

So whether you’re looking for historical beauty, great events, family experiences or something that’s truly unique, all within easy reach of York - then the Selby district has the answer.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Visit York strives to promote accommodation that is trusted to be of an acceptable standard and encourages providers to sign up to one of the two national quality schemes operated by the AA and Quality in Tourism.

Accommodation in this guide has been divided into five categories: Hotels Hotels must have a minimum of six rooms, a licence, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless designated a Metro Hotel), and have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms. The Inspection Process Both VisitBritain and the AA assess hotels and guest accommodation to the same criteria with the star rating reflecting the overall quality of the experience.

Professional assessors visit properties every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in anonymously and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience, including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the food and, most importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the warmth of welcome.

Alternative Accommodation There are a number of accommodation providers who, although not eligible to display a NAS symbol, are still able to offer suitable and very comfortable accommodation for people with limited mobility. These divide into two groups and are clearly marked in each entry.

The ‘Q’ Code of Conduct Should an accommodation provider decide not to be inspected, Visit York will only promote that provider on the condition they sign a Code of Conduct declaring that they will provide a quality standard throughout. Failure to do this will result in Visit York refusing to place bookings or promote them via the Visit York website.

SA (Self Assessed) Accommodation providers, restaurants and cafés displaying the self assessed SA symbol may have limited access but can accommodate people with mobility problems.
