EXPERIENCE YLLÄS EIGHT TIMES

Nature is the most precious inhabitant of our region. It adapts to the movements of the seasons and offers new experiences throughout the year. Nature paints the horizon with pastel colors during the Polar night, and the trails with golden sunlight during the time of the Nightless Night. In the heart of winter, nature offers light powder snow for skiing, and in spring, it invites paddlers to the waves of swelling rivers.

The Ylläs brochure is now appearing on the doorstep of autumn, as nature changes its green attire to a colorful festive outfit. The harvest season has come to its end: both locals and visitors have found themselves by the offerings of nature’s delicacies. International guests were also captivated by the Finnish way of berry picking, fishing and enjoying nature’s gifts straight from the forest.

Ylläs has grown in popularity, especially among international visitors. The international season has extended, and visitors from Central Europe continue to come until Easter. The growing interest in Lapland’s summer has also internationalized Ylläs during the warmer months. March remains the most popular month.

The waves of world events mainly affect the maintenance of winter routes in Ylläs. As the adequacy of funds for winter route maintenance has not been guaranteed previously either, inflation and rising costs make the upcoming winter even more challenging. Therefore, we invite everyone who’s enjoying the winter routes to participate in route maintenance efforts: you can support the routes by paying the leisure residents’ route fee, purchasing Ylläs products, outdoor maps, or ski trail stickers, or paying the ski trail fee with MobilePay. Last year, over 650,000€ were spent on maintaining the routes. Everyone’s contribution is important.

All in all, we are fortunate to say that even in the midst of global events, Ylläs is a paradise for people who enjoy both activity and relaxation: a safe and serene place to spend a vacation. Inhale the purest air of the world in the embrace of seven fells and listen to the story that nature has to tell you.

Best regards, Visit Ylläs team

THE SEVEN FELLS OF YLLÄS

The seven fells of Ylläs have delighted travelers for centuries. Being some of the oldest hills in the world, they’ve eroded from sharp mountains to round fells through time. Have you topped all seven yet?

Special features

Views that stretch over 100km Gondola

Yllästunturi fell is a landmark of western Lapland that can be spotted from far away. 719 metres above sea level and 500 metres above the surrounding terrain, the fell top presents views that stretch over 100 kilometres all over Lapland. By relative relief, Yllästunturi is one of Finland’s great fells.

You can reach the top comfortably by gondola all year round. In summer, walk on a hiking trail or on a ski resort service roads from both sides of the fell – Ylläs Ski Resort Ylläsjärvi and Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo – lead to the top. In winter skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers enjoy the fell landscapes.

One of the easiest to conquer

A three-kilometre gentle ascent on the trail through a pine forest. Up the steepening slope to the treeline and the treeless fell top. That’s it! Kukastunturi fell is one of the easiest to conquer. Stroll to the top without breaking a sweat or get a workout on your way up – it’s up to you.

The views from the top reward the hike. In the north, peaks of Pallastunturi fell catches your eye and in the east, the Lainiotunturi fell is almost within reach. In the south, Yllästunturi fell rises as its most beautiful. The summer hiking and mountain biking trail leads

to the top and in winter, a xc ski trail, snowshoe trail and winter biking trail take you to the highest point.

Even if it’s cloudy down in the village, the fell tops could be bathing in the sun above the clouds!

In winter, a xc ski trail and snowshoe trails take you up the gentler slope to the Tahkokuru day trip hut, located at the treeline of the fell.

In winter the relatively easy Kuertunturi fell snowshoe trail is one of the finest in Ylläs! At the top, the snow covered trees frame the vast landscape. In summer there’s no trail to Kuertunturi fell, making Kesänkitunturi fell a feasible option, for example.

The long and horseshoe-shaped fell offers a feel for wilderness and natural quietness. In summer, the Aakenustunturi fell can be conquered via the Totovaaran tunturireitti trail that starts from the Totovaara parking area. Alternatively, start from the Pyhäjärvi parking and follow the Vareslaen kierros trail. The newest wilderness hut in Ylläs, the six-person Aakenustupa, is positioned beautifully and is definitely worth a visit! In winter, a cross-country ski trail goes around the Aakenustunturi fell. Follow the trail to nearby Totovaara hill for amazing views of the chain of fells.

Special features

DISCOVER THE MANY VILLAGES OF KOLARI

The Ylläs area lies in the municipality of Kolari next to the Swedish border in Fell Lapland, the north-western part of Lapland, Finland’s largest and northernmost province.

Kolari is known for the unique borderless “Meänkieli” culture prevalent on both the Finnish and Swedish sides of the Tornion-Muonionjoki river, and for being a hub for salmon fishing.

When holidaying in Ylläs, a visit to Kolari town is a convenient way to catch a glimpse into local culture. Visit the old church, follow the ski

tracks of Olympic gold medalist Pertti Teurajärvi or pop into the Swedish town of Pajala just across the border river – no passport needed.

EXPERIENCE YLLÄS

HOW YOU WANT

Discover the magic of Lapland and Nordic freedom at its best in our hotels in Ylläs and its vicinity. Choose your preferred accommodation from our four Ylläs hotels.

LAPLAND HOTELS YLLÄSKALTIO

Lapland Hotels Ylläskaltio offers smooth and enjoyable accommodation in the village of Äkäslompolo. All rooms have their own saunas and the generous buffet meals make sure that you will have energy for all the activities.

LAPLAND HOTELS ÄKÄSHOTELLI

Lapland Hotels Äkäshotelli offers a wide range of accommodation for all tastes – hotel rooms, holiday apartments and log cabins. Dances are organised at the legendary Pirtunkirkko venue, featuring Finland’s leading artists, and Pirtun Kellari and Pirtun Parvi have the best afterparties in town.

LAPLAND HOTELS SAAGA

Lapland Hotels Saaga is located on the slope of the Ylläs fell on the Ylläsjärvi side. Saaga is a genuine ski-in, ski-out hotel: the gondola takes skiers from the backyard to the top of the fell, and some of the rooms are even directly connected to the slopes through their terraces. Pamper yourself in the spa after a long day of skiing.

LAPLAND HOTELS SNOWVILLAGE

Lapland Hotels SnowVillage reveals the magic of ice and snow. The hotel complex located in the middle of Ylläs and Levi is full of breathtaking snow and ice art – an attraction all of its own. A night spent in the snow hotel surrounded by beautifully lit ice art and thick snow walls is an unforgettable experience!
