Inspired by the winter white floral arrangement, I wanted to keep the table setting mostly neutral with small accents of red, brown, and orange. I love to mix vintage plates and glassware with newer pieces—I think it makes the table more interesting, and, honestly, more approachable by not having everything look so perfect and overly coordinated.

Who says you have to dine in the dining room? In this scene, a table is unexpectedly pulled up next to a chesterfield sofa. Mix and match the chairs, and don't be afraid to mix periods of furniture together. The use of old and new, crystal and brass, leopard and velvet, all on top of a Moroccan rug, set the tone for an evening filled with laughter in an intimate setting.

Decorations make shopping even more fun. At the market’s Antique Barn, owner Walter Marquez adds nostalgic seasonal touches by displaying some of his collection of antique Santas. Altogether, he owns 1,500 antique Santas. “I put up a small display of some of my collection, which people come to see,” says Walter. “It’s a happy time of year.” Around the holidays, Walter says shoppers often come to the Antique Barn to buy distinctive jewelry, glassware, china, and smaller items imbued with the spirit of holidays past. “We sell a lot of jewelry, one-of-a-kind items that make for a unique gift,” which customers prefer, “rather than going to the mall and getting something mass-produced.”

The lively restaurant has a New Orleans-inspired menu that features such luscious Louisiana dishes as jambalaya and shrimp and grits, as well as drinks made with distinctive ingredients.
“The Water Street Market has such a great vibe during the holiday season,” says Matt. “It has that ‘Dickens’ feel that really puts you in the holiday mood. At The Parish, we embrace that holiday feel by offering seasonal cocktails and fare.” Matt recommends the restaurant’s Dickens Punch, a warm Applejack-based punch that is actually made from Charles Dickens’ own recipe.

Theresa Fall of Jar’d, the market’s wine bar, finds that the Water Street Market has a special feel to it all year, but, especially during the holidays, the atmosphere is extra warm and festive. “The shop owners chip in and hang lights to give it a festive feel, and they stay open longer hours so people can get after-work shopping and snacking done,” she says. “It's a lovely spot to stroll outside and shop.” After strolling, shoppers can warm up with a drink. Jar’d captures that holiday season feel by serving such warming drinks as eggnog, warm cider with pumpkin gin, and mulled wine (warmed red wine with cider, brandy, cinnamon, cloves, and oranges). With outside heaters on the enclosed deck, patrons can feel cozy even in December.

Windham Mountain Resort has been welcoming skiers for decades, with a reputation for blending a family-friendly atmosphere with cutting-edge innovation. Windham has made the transition to a four-season resort with golf, skyrides, a day camp for kids, and a topflight mountain bike park designed by Gravity Logic. But they haven’t let their ski game go downhill (pun intended). On the contrary, skiers this season will enjoy the results of $2 million in capital improvements: a new system of fully automated snow guns, nearly three miles of new snowmaking pipe, and the addition of a new PistenBully 200 Winch Cat to the
grooming fleet. This means that the popular intermediate trail Wiseacres, on the West Peak, will be open this year whether Mother Nature cooperates or not. In keeping with Windham’s ethics, the improvements are environmentally friendly. The mountain has 285 skiable acres and 54 trails over two peaks, six terrain parks,

and 12 lifts, as well as state-of-the-art services to help everyone—from experts to raw beginners—have a blast. “This year, we are debuting a completely new learn-toski program,” says communications manager Becky Pine. “We’ve redesigned everything, from our rental shop to the experience on the hill with our instructors. We’re initiating a terrain-based system that puts you through a series of different terrains on a slope designed so you can’t run off it; it allows you to get that gliding sensation without fear, because the slope will stop you. It’s all about first-timers doing it right off the bat, instead of spending time on flat terrain learning to turn and stop.” Windham has always been committed to providing skiing for absolutely everyone who’d like to ski. Since 2005, they’ve operated the Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center, where folks with disabilities will find a skiing experience tailor-made for them in a dedicated 7,200-square-foot lodge with a cozy great room. “People come from all over the country to see the program and use it as a model,” says Becky. “We’re one of only 40 resorts in the country that offers adaptive skiing. We’ve got a full-time staff and 250 volunteers helping disabled people get on the slopes to enjoy the outdoors.” There are fresh treats in store for snow tubers and snowmobilers in the resort’s Adventure Park, as

Soothe away muscle aches at the spa, or loosen up with a yoga session. There’s a movie theater and free wi-fi. Dining choices include the Rock’n Mexicana (lots of tequila options and a roaring fire in the fireplace) and on-mountain eateries with choices ranging from Belgian waffles to sushi to grab-n-go burgers, soups, and sandwiches. You’ll never be far from a hot chocolate or a glass of wine. Marketing manager Joe McCracken, a Catskills native, has worked at the resort since 1999. “I’ve done all kinds of things from digging ditches to ticket sales and IT,” he says. “It’s been the time of my life. I love this mountain.” He’s excited about Belleayre’s new Catskill Thunder Gondola. “We started it in early summer and it will be all done by mid-December,” he says. “You’ll be able to take your skis off and ride up the mountain in an enclosed cabin. It’s an eight-passenger gondola that gets you to the top of the mountain in seven minutes.” The high-speed gondola will feature 60 of these cabins, taking passengers from the bottom of the mountain near Discovery Lodge all the way up to the summit. In addition to transporting skiers to the peak in a more efficient and comfortable way, the gondola will also allow cross-country skiers to access the summit for some incredible views and trails along the top of the mountain, and will provide gorgeous scenic rides in the summer. Improvements at Belleyare have been steady over the last couple of years. There’s a new extension of the Deer Run trail, connecting the upper and lower

mountains. The renovated cafeteria minimizes lines with a grab-n-go setup. The Tiger Den daycare has been moved next to the kidscamp, where youngsters can get four hours of instruction, lift tickets, and friendly supervision. “We’ve also got a redesigned rental shop that helps the flow of activity,” says Joe. “And there are going
to be a lot of improvements and extensions going forward—we’re in a planning phase.” Beginners will love the learning area, where over 100 qualified instructors teach all skill levels: there are offerings for kids, teens, and adults ranging from beginner packages to private one-on-one clinics with pros. Slopes for beginners have been
widened this past summer, almost doubling the space for skiers-in-training. There are a total of 171 skiable acres on the mountain: 50 trails, five glades, an Area 51 terrain park, two progression parks, and an X-course. There’s ample snowboarding, of course, and there are over nine kilometers of cross-country trails that are open when there’s natural snow, free of charge, covering breathtakingly beautiful territory. 69

Skiers love Plattekill Mountain for its untamed feel and wealth of natural powder. “We’re lucky with snow,” says owner Danielle Vajtay. “We’re the western ski mountain in the Catskills, and we get lake-effect snow from the Great Lakes. When that weather system comes across here, it tends to dump.”

All that lovely snow dumps on what one Plattekill fan called “the most diverse terrain in the Catskills” on Yelp. Plattekill has 38 trails, an 1,100-foot vertical drop, and a terrain park— small compared to some mountains, but far from limited.

“After a big dump you, can still find acres of untracked powder even late in the afternoon. You can’t find that even out west,” marvels another reviewer. “I found exceptional narrow, windy, New England-style runs, and several lines through the woods. There is also a natural, easy way down. All runs meet at the bottom, so if the natural trails are open, it is perfect for families or groups with skiers of varying ability,” says yet another Yelp reviewer. All that natural snow is a beautiful thing when it happens, but Plattekill is ramping up its snowmaking ability to guarantee skiers a good time, regardless of weather patterns. New this year: 1,900 feet of pipe and 21 snow guns aimed at Shredded Mozzarella, the mountain’s beloved terrain park trail. “The younger generation especially seems to love the terrain park, but most everybody wants to at least give it a try, so we have all kinds of levels,” says Danielle. “We’ve got rails, boxes, jumps—the things that these kind of skiers can spend all day having fun with and perfecting their moves. The firepower we’ve added means that, within a day or so, we can get a big pile of snow there and make the park perfect, no matter the weather.”

organizations that want to enjoy the dream of their own private mountain. “Being smaller and privately owned, we decided to capitalize on our strengths, and one is the opportunity to make the mountain yours for a day,” Danielle says. “Where, besides a ski resort, can you have your wedding vows on a mountain peak and then a reception at a cozy lodge? And corporations love to be able to offer a scenic chairlift ride and some skiing or tubing after a morning’s retreat work and a tasty lunch. “We’ve got a really cool thing going here these days,” says Danielle happily. “Experts love the natural terrain; we have two peaks and a bowl, it’s pretty steep, and way back when, that was the impression people had of us: great for experts and backcountry skiers. We’re still off the beaten path, with that private, laid-back feel, but we have a two-mile beginner trail and a carpet lift. An expert would be happy here, a beginner would be happy here.” Opting to put their resources into improvements rather than advertising, Danielle says, means that Plattekill relies on satisfied customers to spread the word. “We’ve always had good word-of-mouth out there, and social media is word-of-mouth on steroids. People who talk about their experience, that’s better than a full-page ad. sweet sue’s Suzanne Taylor hadn’t necessarily intended to become the “Pancake Queen of Phoenicia”, or to even own a restaurant. But a little ways into creating Sweet Sue’s, the beloved breakfast and brunch spot that’s been winning raves from both locals and tourists for decades now, she realized the project had taken on a life of its own for her whole family.

“Back in 1982, I was living with my fiancé, who was an attorney, and baking was our mutual true love,” she recalls. “Mom and I were going to do wholesale out of her basement. I stopped in on Main Street in Phoenicia and found that the older Iranian couple who owned the place were retiring for medical reasons. They said ‘Suzy, Suzy, why don’t you buy this place?’
Somehow I barely had to think about it. Nana financed me-who knew she had a stash-and my mom, my dad, my siblings Cathy and John all jumped up to help me get started. My family, including my children Sam and Max, pitched in through the years.

“I don’t feel like I picked the location. It picked me. I remember saying to my fiancé that I felt like I had no idea what to do, and he said, ‘Just do the first thing, and the next thing will present itself.’ He was the one who came up with the name Sweet Sue’s.” From the very beginning, it’s been an adventure. “We opened on April 1, 1984—April Fools Day, yep—and the night before, we worked into the wee hours. When we got up, someone had stolen my fiancé’s car. The police found the car and found the guy in the A&P trying to cash one of my fiancé’s checks. I wish I’d kept journals. I could write a book.” A Catskills native, Suzanne grew up in Woodstock, Olivebridge, and Glenford. She did some wandering, living in California and Florida, crossing the country on a motorcycle—but always came back to the Cats. “I’m big on outdoor activities,” she says, “rock climbing, ice climbing, mountain biking, hiking ... anything that gets me outdoors makes me happy, and all of it is available right here. I love the changes I’ve seen over the last few years. We have so many little entrepreneurs popping up, selling ginger, honey, soap, all kinds of good things.” Skiers, fisherfolks, locals, and explorers alike have

just blends and it’s such an interesting bunch. We just do our best, and they usually come back.” Through tough times—a fire, back-to-back hurricanes in 2010 and 2011, septic failure—Suzanne also kept on coming back, growing both the menu
and the loyal circle of customers. Her gift for pancakes has brought her some high-profile attention, being one of two experts quoted in Real Simple magazine. “Tyler Florence filmed a show on pancakes from around the world and tried to get me to give up my recipe. Nope.” She will admit it’s all

from scratch and involves real buttermilk and fresh eggs. “The pancakes just kind of evolved. They’re my favorite food, and I just played with recipes, and people love them,” she says. “Now we do eight to ten varieties a day. We have seasonal specials like our Fall Sundae, which is pumpkin pancakes topped with vanilla yogurt, applesauce made from
local apples, and a homemade cardamom sauce. We serve corn cakes in the summer. Gluten-free pancakes are a big hit—they were tough to get perfect, but my son was my guinea pig and he’s a picky eater. Where in the Hudson Valley can you find authentic Asian cuisine and a hip noodle bar in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere? With three locations in Woodstock, Kingston, and now Red Hook, in addition to a food truck and catering service, Yum Yum Noodle Bar is that place, and it lives up to its delicious and fun name. Featuring Japanese noodle bowls, Southeast Asian street food, and Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine, Yum Yum is a dining destination for fresh, healthy food, fast service, and well-crafted beverages at affordable prices. Yum Yum co-owner and Executive Chef Erica Mahlkuch, winner of the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen in 2014 (Season 3, Episode 6), feels at home in a busy kitchen. “It was really fun to be on the show,” says Erica. “After owning restaurants and working in kitchens for so long, you think quick naturally.” Erica’s restaurant experience includes 23 years of thinking fast on her feet in the kitchen. Erica moved from Virginia to the Hudson Valley to open Sabroso in Rhinebeck, which featured Latin world cuisine. The restaurant was open from

Since 2010, Yum Yum Noodle Bar has been the focus of Erica’s attention. In 2013, Nicole Cawley joined her and started handling the financial aspect of the business. She officially became co-owner in 2015.

Indeed, Yum Yum ethically sources all of their food and is mindful of their customers’ dietary concerns. “We use clean, good ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, and accommodate allergies and dietary preferences—vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free,” says Erica. “We make just about everything from scratch, in house. We buy fresh produce daily.”
Eggs and certain types of mushrooms are bought from local farms and foragers, while Asian specialty ingredients, not necessarily grown locally, are derived fresh from authentic sources. “All of our fish items are responsibly farmed. We check into where everything comes from. We are very conscientious about what we put on our menu,” adds Erica.

“The flavor profiles are so vibrant,” says Nicole. Yum Yum also has a food truck—Yum Yum on Wheels—that provides a travelling sample of their specialty cuisine, suitable for festivals and private catering. “On the catering side, people have become much more open to having Asian food for weddings,” says Nicole.

“A lot of people who don’t know about us see the food truck,” says Erica. “It gets us out there. It’s a very beautiful truck with a cherry blossom-and-silhouette motif. It’s eye-catching.” The restaurant employs about 20 workers at each of their three locations. “It does feel like a family. For us, it’s 24/7. In the restaurant business, it has to be,” says Nicole.
“We keep the business our number-one priority,” says Erica, “not just for ourselves, but for others who rely on us for steady employment.” Erica says that their challenges are the ones common to small business owners, such as the increasing cost of insurance and rents. “We have our ups and downs, but, all in all, we’re very happy with everything.” Yum Yum generously supports Family of Woodstock and the Ulster County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (UCSPCA), among others. Fun, fresh, affordable, and diverse, it’s no mystery why Yum Yum Noodle Bar has quickly become a prominent restaurant in the Hudson Valley.

A truly epic bar is a slice of paradise—a place where worries slip away and warmth surrounds you, where your feet remember how to dance. The camaraderie and devoted clientele of Bacchus, in addition to its impressive menu, an even more impressive beer list (over 300 beers from around the world, including homemade brews), billiards room, and live music events, take Bacchus beyond the level of the average local bar—it is, indeed, epic. Yet Bacchus held this status even in the 1970s, when the air was smoky and peanut shells on the wooden floor crunched beneath the feet of customers. With the addition of each new endeavor that has developed over the years, some regulars might have worried that the deep sense of heart and soul would fade. But thanks to the capable hands on the steering wheel, Bacchus has just gotten better. The Chestnut Street building was erected in the late-1800s as a general store and home for the LeFevre family, whose ancestors helped to establish New Paltz two hundred years earlier. During the nearly 100-year period prior to Bacchus opening in 1974, the building housed a colorful string of businesses: a Chinese laundry, litho shop, taxi station, barber shop (they still have the
original barber chair in the third floor office), café, and porn photography studio.
partnership didn’t last, but the business did, with originator Wayne Bradford very much still at the helm.
In 1973, a self-described “Laurel and Hardy team” put together about $4,000 and began turning the building into a neighborhood tavern, which they named in homage to the Roman god of wine and song. The
Linda (now Bradford) came on board in 1985. “I relocated here for college at SUNY New Paltz, fell in love with the area, and chose to make it home,” she says. “There is something magical about the beauty

of this area, both in the people and the surroundings, and it just feels like home.” She’s been running day-to-day operations since 1987. “I’m a somewhat balanced mix of business and social, a blend of crazy with a side of stress, topped with moments that are calm and relaxed,” she says. (Perhaps only a true-blooded restaurateur would describe herself like items from a psycho-
logical menu). “I genuinely love this business and enjoy interacting with the staff, the customers, the vendors, the sales people, and the day-to-day challenges of running the business. I always knew I belonged in a social job, and always gravitated to hospitality and service positions. I love being present, I love connecting with people.” In Bacchus, she found a home for those

“There is so much history here,” says Linda. “So many people come in and talk of how they first met at Bacchus, celebrating anniversaries, bringing their kids back, and sharing the stories of how they met and how it all began.…
As you read this (assuming it’s not at 7am), there are probably former strangers striking up conversations in Bacchus that will lead to just that sort of bond. Linda and her staff set the mood, and the customers do the rest. “There is 107

a Cheers sort of vibe at play … making connections with customers, knowing them, having fun with them, and making them feel at home within these walls,” says Linda. “And we have the nicest, most laid-back, easygoing, pleasant clientele anywhere, the best customers anyone could hope for.” Linda and her crew make it easy for people to let
their best selves shine, and it starts with getting the right team together. Over the years, she’s developed a knack for hiring. “We expect and get a lot from our people,” she says. “At the top of the list, we look for people who are friendly, with good social skills and heart, and they have to genuinely like working with people. Our team is one big (at times, somewhat dysfunctional) family. We don’t take life
too seriously, and we get that if the staff isn’t having fun, there’s a trickle-down effect and the overall customer experience will be less fun.” The varieties of fun on tap at Bacchus have expanded over the years. “Great food and incredible house-brewed beers, which are part of the best beer selection in the Hudson Valley; a full bar and a

nice wine selection; a billiard room with ping pong, foosball, darts, and video games; live music most Friday and Saturday nights; and front and back patios with outdoor dining,” is how Linda describes the basic ingredients. Then there’s the secret sauce: “We create a comfortable atmosphere with the lighting, music, and decor. We serve great food and drink with the friendliest service in a warm and comfortable environment, and provide a place where the staff love to work, thus allowing them to function at their best.” Working with the larger business community has helped this “constantly-evolving bar and restaurant” survive and thrive through the decades. “Collaboration is positive,” Linda says. “More is gained by working together than against each other.” That said, both she and Wayne love the freedom that comes with captaining their own ship. “The freedom to grow and develop the business in varying directions is endless, creative, and fun!” she says. “Evolution is essential to the continued success of any thriving business. We believe in staying receptive to new ideas, change, and growth. It keeps the freshness in what we do.”
What will happen next at Bacchus? Well, maybe you. Go shoot a game of pool, try a house beer with some tasty Tex-Mex, and be part of the celebration. But, as for the business, expect ... anything. “We do have plans in the works, but they’re still in development,” says Linda. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”

A former event planner in New York’s East Village, Liz left her career to open Stone Wave Yoga, a dream she’s always wanted to pursue. “Life kept getting in the way,” she recalls. She’s practiced yoga for many years and holds multiple certifications, including prenatal and Registered Yoga Teacher 200 designations. Liz and her partner, landscape designer Keith Buesing, found the location and revamped it to complement the property’s scenic mountain backdrop: the Millbrook Cliff, a subsection of the Hudson Valley’s famous Shawangunk Mountains. Making the space a “warm and welcoming environment” for people of all ethnicities, abilities, and creeds has been a priority for Liz since the beginning. “We’re going into month four, and our clients have really been a nice blend of different people from different walks of life,” Liz says. “My motto has always been ‘come as you are.’ It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch that be manifested and come into fruition.” Conscious of how her clients feel at Stone Wave, Liz aims to shed any negative stereotypes or barriers associated with yoga. It’s not for everyone, she admits, but yoga is an option for anyone who’s willing to try it. “I don’t like all the visuals of yoga on social media,” Liz says. “I think it sets a really prohib-

Liz’s talented lineup of instructors lead classes to suit all levels of expertise or personal needs, including prenatal yoga, children’s yoga, teen yoga, and
couple’s sessions. Unique to Stone Wave is its custom Grow Yoga program, designed specifically with young children in mind. Grow Yoga emphasizes breathing, movement, and self-awareness and is the ideal pace for young would-be yogis, Liz explains. The studio also offers mats and supplies for any clients to use, provided they wash down their mats at the end of the class for future use. Liz plans to bring barre and mat Pilates classes to the studio, too. 119

Stone Wave’s space is also home to Sunflower Art Studios, a nonprofit that offers art classes and yoga sessions for local youth. Sunflower Art Studios is a huge point of pride for Liz, who founded the program in 2016 to support her mission of mind-body wellness at all ages. True to Liz’s ethos of inclusivity and accessibility, many Sunflower Art Studio participants receive scholarships to participate in the program free-of-charge. Additionally, Stone Wave’s lush space—complete with two yoga studios, an art studio, showering facilities, and a private treatment room—is available to rent for wellness retreats, gatherings, or events. Since the essence of the space is healing, Liz and her team are particular about what the space is used for (“There won’t be any loud parties!” she says with a laugh), but curious visitors are always welcome to shoot Liz an email to inquire about the space or the studio’s offerings. “We welcome anyone to just come by and visit,” Liz says.

Often you just hear loud white noise and see children bouncing around like pinballs on trampolines. But some of these places are great for those two hours you need to get them all jazzed up, because the crash will come. To be able to have a beautiful slab of it as part of your home is wonderful.”

We had to go to Brooklyn or the Bronx for stone work, which became tiresome and inconvenient. We had some expe-
rience, and it seemed like the perfect complement to our business, but more and more it became our driving force. So I’m not sure if we chose it or it chose us.” The phrase “stone fabricators” was added to the name after “we decided Barra and Trumbore sounded like a law firm.”
HOME
David and his business partner Martin Trumbore have been bringing the beauty of stone into homes since 1996, when they made the switch from woodworking to stone work. “We were running an architectural woodworking shop, and there was nobody doing stone work up here.
David was born and raised in Brooklyn and discovered the world-class rock climbing opportunities of the Shawangunks as a young man. After that, he
says, it was a matter of time and “the positives of outdoor activities balanced with the negatives of alternate-side-ofthe-street parking” that drew him to move north in 1988 and start the woodworking business. Today, Barra & Trumbore can create just about any stone feature you can
imagine for your kitchen, bathroom, or any other part of your home. “We do mostly interior adornments, some exterior,” says David. “If we have the skills and equipment, we’ll do it. We do everything, from templating to fabrication to installation. Our pavilion has a good selection, and if you don’t see what you want we have a

lot of suppliers from Albany to Jersey to pull from via the internet and show you in digital photos.” After a piece of stone is chosen, the customer is encouraged to develop a relationship with it even before it comes home. “People can come help do layout after we template a piece, and if they are in love with a certain spot, we’ll try to make it the focal point. We love when people love their stone enough to be proactive in design and layout.” New to the shop is a state-of-the-art Northwood robotic waterjet cutter. “It’s very big, very sexy, and very yellow,” David says. “It cuts the stone with high-pressure steam and abrasive. When it’s cutting, it’s kinda anticlimactic because it moves slowly, but when you’re setting up the cut it dances all over the shop.” The new capabilities mean Barra & Trumbore can provide you with the latest stone trends. “The improvement in fabrication equipment has opened up the industry to a lot of new materials that had been difficult to bring to market,” says David. “Natural quartzite is really hot right now, with its color variations and dramatic veining. It’s much harder and more difficult to work with, but the pieces are real attention-getters when you walk into a yard full of stone. Some are really dramatic, some more subtle

“Really detailed work that requires hand carving is very challenging and the results are very rewarding; it’s not always the most profitable, but it’s the most fun.” and subdued; different people fall in love with them.” They’re highly aware of the environmental concerns involved in working with stone, and strive to keep the company’s carbon footprint small. The Kerhonkson shop has been fully solar since March 1, 2011. “I’m
more proud of that than our other acquisitions,” says David. “And it’s something anyone up here can do. If someone says they have a limited budget and can add stone or solar, I say, go solar, the stone will always be there. The subsidies and incentives for solar might not be.” The shop also features high-efficiency
lighting and a high-pressure water recycling system that has reduced water consumption by more than 95 percent. All fabrication is done wet to reduce airborne matter and keep the diamond tooling cool. The clients are “a very eclectic bunch,” he says, 141

united only by the desire to live up close and personal with stone. “We do get a lot of weekend and second-home people. I think they live in such small spaces down there that having a home up here, they love to cook and entertain. That’s the population driving the high-end building and renovation.”
David freely admits that a major stone feature isn’t a cheap acquisition. “Our focus is on custom work, not trying to chase down every job or competing with Lowes or Home Depot. We don’t shy away from the fragile marbles that take time to reinforce; we cut hard quartzite slowly. Things that are too labor-intensive and unpredictable for the big box stores are what keeps

it interesting for us. Really detailed work that requires hand carving is very challenging and the results are very rewarding; it’s not always the most profitable, but it’s the most fun.” That said, you shouldn’t automatically assume that a stone piece is out of your decorating budget. “We have lots of remnant material here, and if
someone has a smaller project on a tight budget, they’re often amazed at the variety of heavily discounted smaller pieces in the yard,” says David. “We have stone for every budget. Since the varieties and availability are constantly changing and there are so many variations in veining patterns and shading, we’re often left with stuff that doesn’t match.”

David and Martin like hiring their fellow artisans. “Everyone who works in the shop needs to be well-rounded,” says David, “capable of running equipment, hand work, templating, and installation. Some specialize, but we like them all to have a good understanding of how the process works. The best people are in love with the material and the process. If someone comes in and just wants to polish stone, their interest is likely to fade. And isolating each area like an assembly line wouldn’t work for us, since everything is custom.” It’s not the easiest material to deal with. “When we deal with heavy stone in tight quarters, or getting it up to the second floor, it’s very challenging and always satisfying when we’re done and no one’s injured,” David says. “We once installed a giant island 2 inches thick and about six feet by ten feet that weighed well over 1,600 pounds. I love the challenge of it, and working at different sites all the time. I get to see what is happening in architecture and design and meet other talented craftspeople. There are always a lot of interesting projects happening.” He’s also fond of his colleagues. “Martin and I have been good friends for 30 years. And my brother’s here, and I’ve known him even longer. And Katie, our office manager, is awesome.”
