The Place
choosing the perfect venue

Your venue, your menu, and your music are probably the three most impactful choices you’ll make, setting the tone for your entire celebration. The Hudson Valley and the Catskills have a wide range of unforgettable venue options, from ballroom to barn and beyond—way beyond.

Make a list of your needs and your deal breakers and have it handy for your first phone call.
Reserve early. Many great venues get booked up as early as 18 months in advance. Make a list of your needs and your deal-breakers and have it handy for your first phone call with a location’s wedding or guest services coordinator. Check on exactly what’s included in an “all-inclusive” package, and whether or not you’re allowed to bring in outside vendors.
Allow plenty of time to explore when you visit. Take notes and pictures, and don’t forget to ask about rules, regulations, insurance, and access for guests with disabilities. Have each of your prospects email you a copy of their standard contract, and read and compare the fine print to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
To get your creative juices flowing, here are some of the candidate venues within our beloved realm:
• River views can be part of the package at many formal and informal choices, from luxurious inns and villas to vineyards and public parks.
• Mountain settings, likewise, come in a wide range of flavors. Our ski lodges do weddings, as do many Catskills restaurants and breweries.

Many of the mansions of Millionaires’ Row on the east shore offer indoor and outdoor venue choices, as do landmarks like Mohonk Mountain House and West Point’s Thayer Hotel.
• Historic sites. Many of the mansions of Millionaires’ Row on the east shore offer indoor and outdoor venue choices, as do landmarks like Mohonk Mountain House and West Point’s Thayer Hotel.
• Farms of all sorts, from apple orchards to animal sanctuaries, offer settings suitable for tying the knot. So do many wineries, breweries, and distilleries.
• Art-loving couples should take a look at Storm King Art Center, Opus 40, OMI International Art Center, and Olana State Historic Site, to name a few.
• Mansions and castles aren’t hard to find and come in a range of styles. You can even host up to 40 guests at Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island mid-river, though other castles may be logistically simpler.
• State parks, nature preserves, and botanical gardens offer settings that are often stunning and affordable.

planning your wedding

So you’ve decided to say yes to the adventure of your love, and you now have a celebration to plan. Huge congrats! Love is just the best, and there’s nothing on Earth like getting together
to celebrate your joy in it. Around our beloved realm, the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, there are lots of sweet, smart souls who thrive on helping you make your dream celebration a reality.
Photo
The essential elements are the binding ritual, the feast, and the dancing/revelry. Those are absolutely it, and the two of you can choose among the various ways of manifesting those elements to your hearts’ content.
Hold that thought when you see clickbait headlines about “ruined” weddings and temperamental relations. Ignore that noise and anything that suggests that planning is a massive ordeal to be endured, rather than the delightful process of planning the party of your lifetimes in honor of the beginning of a lively, lovely new chapter.
The essential elements are the binding ritual, the feast, and the dancing/ revelry. Those are absolutely it, and the two of you can choose among the various ways of manifesting those elements to your hearts’ content. Your wedding can be a time that invites your circle into the story of your love, whether it’s a state park barbecue or a black tie evening for 200.
So have fun planning, and tune out anyone—no matter how well-meaning— who tries to tell you there is only one right way to wed. The right way is the way you both love, because that’s the vibe that will make this party sing. That’s what you want to radiate and resonate: happiness. Go with what makes you glow, and it should be pretty easy to convince even the most opinionated relative that this wedding will be an experience they don’t want to miss.
ENLIST HELP
Working with a planner, which can be hugely helpful if you’re not the planner type yourself, doesn’t have to mean you sacrifice that individuality. You can

let the planner apply practiced skills to the broad strokes—helping you find the vendors who can do what you’re after, figuring out the logistics and scheduling—while you brainstorm together on creating the perfect rituals, special décor touches, and the precise flavors of reception fun that will please your people.
OR DO IT ON YOUR OWN
Doing it yourselves is entirely possible if you have the time and energy to take it on as a work project lasting from a few months (a relatively simple little gathering) to a full year, which is about what it takes to reserve a venue; get stationery made; settle on your couture; book the food, music, and flowers; and throw a classic wedding. If you’re planning a multi-day destination affair, it’s a good idea to give yourselves 18 months.
EITHER WAY, HAVE A PLAN
Before you start, know how much you plan to spend and talk to anyone who is helping out to get a clear idea of what you can afford. There are free apps available to help you calculate how much of it you’ll probably spend on each vendor category. And get a fresh notebook so you’ll have a handy hard copy of everything.
If you’re not working with a planner, consider retaining a day-of or week-of coordinator. Ever host a party and be so busy you got no time to just enjoy it? That will be you, and/or any well-meaning person who takes on this role as a volunteer. An experienced wedding coordinator will be laser focused on the practical details.

Décor
styling your wedding
On your Big Day, you’ll want to be surrounded by beauty and a touch of magic. There are all kinds of ways to get there: an archway dripping with flowers and greenery amid a wild meadow; next-wave neon; a gleaming, sumptuous ballroom. Your wedding décor is an opportunity to get creative in ways that will set the day’s tone and stand out in memories and photos.
Here are a few of our favorite ideas for styling your chosen venue:
Fabulous fabrics: Consider softening and glowing-up furniture and walls with dramatic drapery arrangements. The sheen of satin, the luster of velvet, puffs of lace, nubbly cozy knits, batik tapestries, woven rugs—any and all of them can be used to dress up shelves, tables, chairs, doorways, and corners. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and colors.
Luscious layering: Layered textures are a design tactic you can use to elevate tables, seating arrangements, and ceremony and
photo backdrops, crafting something exquisite and visually striking, Layers work whether you’re going rustic, modern, romantic, or any other style. The basic art of layering involves using a range of elements and heights—fabrics, florals, and lighting, for example, might all be layers in a backdrop, while tablecloths, runners, placemats, and napkins might be base layers for florals and crystal in a table setting—to add visual depth that fascinates the eye. To pull it all together, you can repeat wedding colors in various tones and textures.
Your wedding décor is an opportunity to get creative in ways that will set the day’s tone and stand out in memories and photos.
There’s something about the grace and craftsmanship of vintage pieces that delights the eye and evokes the sweep of human history, and a wedding is the perfect setting for a touch of nostalgia.
Vintage décor: There’s something about the grace and craftsmanship of vintage pieces that delights the eye and evokes the sweep of human history, and a wedding is the perfect setting for a touch of nostalgia. You’ll find vintage furniture and accessories available to rent in a wide range of styles ranging from rustic to drop-dead elegant, from tableware and silver to major statement furniture.
Fruits and vegetables: Nature’s bounty carries powerful symbolism, evoking peace, abundance, and fertility. Use in floral arrangements or as stand-alones: apples and peaches in wooden baskets? Glowing bunches of grapes catching the light of a candelabra? A centerpiece of peaches, berries, and citrus? Colorful peppers amid bunches of fresh greenery? The possibilities abound.
Details & personal touches can be deployed throughout your venue to draw guests into your journey. How about a photo display of favorite moments near the guest book? Family heirlooms integrated into the décor? A giant card and markers, so all guests can sign and do a little drawing in a color of their choice?
Lighting will impact every other aspect of your décor, so choose it wisely. Candles and/or lanterns add a romantic touch. Strings of colored, gold, or white LEDs can add whimsical joy and sparkle. A pop of neon on the dance floor or at the bar can add visual excitement.

Statement lighting, in the form of a chandelier, pendant lamp, or floor lamp, can be used to create a focal point wherever you want one.
Statement lighting, in the form of a chandelier, pendant lamp, or floor lamp, can be used to create a focal point wherever you want one.
Seasonal inspirations can infuse your choice of accent color and décor and bring nature indoors, whether it’s blossoms and pastels for springtime; flowing greenery, water features, and seashells for summer; sheaves of grain and colorful gourds for autumn; or frosted crystal with diamond sparkles for wintertime.
Ice sculptures are back in, and we’re glad because they’re fun! The traditional approach is a standalone piece with a romantic theme, but you could also go with something that’s personal to the two of you—say, a rendering of your favorite bird or animal. Ice sculptures can be incorporated into food stations for chilled appetizers or desserts. An ice luge adds a layer of very cool (sorry!) fascination to the bar.
Projection mapping can be used to play a loop of favorite photos, places, artworks, or anything else on a venue wall and take a dance floor to the next level with an immersive light show.

designing the invitation suite
Photo by Love Me Do Photography.
Receiving a wedding invitation should be a joyous moment in itself. Save-the-date cards and invitations are like teaser ads for movies— your wedding’s first public appearances, giving hints of the delight that will follow. The first decision you need to make is whether you prefer old-school physical stationery or a digital approach; after that, and either way, comes the fun of designing invitations that offer an enticing glimpse of your wedding’s style.
paper goodness
The traditional wedding invitation “suite” of paper products includes the invitation card (who’s hosting, who’s getting married, date, time, and venue), an RSVP card with its own stamped, pre-addressed envelope, and an inner envelope that keeps it all together, with or without a fabric or paper “belly band” around the items.
If you’re celebrating your reception at the same venue where you’re getting married, just add “dinner and dancing to follow” and a word of advice on the attire, such as “black tie,” “formal,” “cocktail,” or “dressy casual.” If the reception is at another location, you’ll want to include a second card with the venue name and address and the time. You may also wish to include a map card with directions and/or a card that lists local accommodations that you recommend.
If you’re having a sit-down dinner with two or three entree choices, include the choices on the RSVP card so that people can check or circle their desired option(s).

There’s something lovely about a card with some weight and texture to it spelling out the details of your celebration in flawless calligraphy.
Yes, you can do all of this online; we’ll get to that in a moment. But there’s something lovely about a card with some weight and texture to it spelling out the details of your celebration in flawless calligraphy. Look for eco-friendly options such as recycled paper or biodegradable “seed paper”; what could be lovelier than a plantable invitation that turns into wildflowers?
Traditional calligraphy adds a lovely old-school feel, but it’s far from your only choice. Browse around online and you’ll find all kinds of design options: less traditional fonts and colors, differently shaped cards. If one of you, or someone you love, is a gifted artist, consider a simple, lovely little work—a flower, tree, bird, or animal—that can be reproduced with your monogram across your whole suite of paper goods for a one-of-a-kind wedding logo.
Wax seals are fun; you can buy custom stamps that will make it easy to apply them. But if you want your guests to get the full effect, be sure to use them only on the inner envelope or belly band; modern mail sorting equipment will wreck them if they’re on the outer one.
Even if you order nothing else from the printer, do get a box of printed thank you cards, which you’ll adorn with a quick handwritten note.

online invitations
You’ll find a wide variety of choices available for digital invitations. It’s a terrific way to save yourselves some money and time, and if the vast majority of your guests are comfortable with the Internet, it’s perfectly polite. (That one relative who’s a Luddite? They’ll love a handwritten letter with a card including the wedding details and a follow-up phone call.)
Some advantages of digital:
• Eco-friendliness: Clearly, the only thing more sustainable than recycled paper is no paper at all.
• Simplicity: You can choose design elements with a few clicks and upload your guest list with a few more. No envelopes to stamp, seal, and address; no trips to the post office. And your digital invitation links directly to your wedding website, where they can click to RSVP and check out your gift registry, as well as find maps, directions, accommodations, and any other needed information all in one place.
• Cost: Getting physical invitations printed can take a major bite out of your budget, costing up to $1,000 for a full custom suite of wedding paper goods. Going the digital route, you should be able to get everything together for under $200.

a moment to be savored
Your ceremony, the part of this whole occasion that will change your lives forever, should be a memory that will lift your hearts and remind you of why you have chosen one another out of all the available humans out there. It’s a moment to be savored, so don’t be afraid to craft something that’s true to the two of you and your love.
Here are some possibilities:
Photo by Love Me Do Photography.
The Ceremony
A destination wedding is much, much easier to pull together for five or 15 than for 75.
intimate ceremonies
Having the ceremony in front of a handful of your dearests is perfect for couples who want to wed in a private home, favorite little restaurant or gallery, or on a mountaintop—anyplace you love that’s not conducive to a crowd. Intimate ceremonies are also perfect for people who just don’t want to deal with a massive event, and they can be absolutely lovely and memorable.
You can plan something with a level of personalization that would be hard to achieve at a big event—have people sit in a circle and join you in a ritual, for example. You can have a relaxed meal after the vows are spoken, spend more quality time with your company, and lavish your loved ones with food, drink, or entertainment that would be insanely costly for a mob. A destination wedding is much, much easier to pull together for five or 15 than for 75.
You can then, if you wish, plan a bigger party for another day without having to fuss over all the elements of a classic reception. People won’t be expected to bring presents to this, though some of them may surprise you.

private vow sharing
Sharing your vows in private frees you to express the full depth of your emotions to your sweetheart. Not everyone wants to voice their most personal thoughts in the spotlight. Sharing personal vows on your wedding eve, as part of your first look, or right before you make your reception entrance can be an intense, meaningful experience. You may or may not want to include one or two witnesses each.
It’s a wonderful moment to capture, but keep the photographer at a distance. Tell each other exactly why you are doing this, what you most adore and admire about each other, and what you promise to be and do as long as you both shall live. Get choked up, wipe each other’s tears of joy, kiss, and walk into the public phase of your festivities feeling as beautiful as you truly are.
quick ceremonies
Quick ceremonies pair beautifully with a private vow sharing.
There are three key elements—a statement of intent, an exchange of simple vows, and a pronounce -
ment from the officiant—that will make your ceremony legally binding; everything else is a choice. The official business can be handled in 5 minutes.

Think about your cultural heritage and family history and see what elements you might want to include in this key moment; after all, you’re starting a fresh new branch of the family tree.
make it yours
Make it indelibly yours by bringing resonant rites and customs you love into a ceremony that fills your hearts and joins you to one another and the human community, whether that’s a Catholic Nuptial Mass, a Jewish wedding ceremony under a huppah, or having your attendants shower you with glitter confetti at a strategic moment. Use a poem or a song that captures your shared feelings.
Think about your cultural heritage and family history and see what elements you might want to include in this key moment; after all, you’re starting a fresh new branch of the family tree. Unity rituals have existed all over the planet throughout human history for a reason—unification is our deepest, finest social instinct. Pouring drinks from two pitchers into a shared glass, combining two flames to light a unity candle, planting a tree, handfasting with a silken cord or a garland of flowers, tying a love knot together—there are a vast variety of ways to embody and celebrate the message of two becoming one.

The Flowers
floral décor tips

Flowers breathe love and joy into a room, and there are all kinds of ways to work them into your wedding. Wear them, carry them, fashion them into an arch to shelter you as you speak your vows, or use them to spread pops of color throughout your surroundings.
Here are some tips for deploying and enjoying this timeless symbol of fertility and new beginnings:
Flowers by Iván Torres Vega for the Wedding Foundry. Photo by Clean Plate Pictures.

• Consider working with a flower farm. You’ll get the very freshest local blooms, and there’s nothing flower farmers love more than helping a happy couple. Most are also floral designers who can do anything from crafting a glorious bouquet to decking out a venue.
• Don’t forget the greenery! Ferns, ivy, or evergreen boughs can stand alone or make a beautiful backdrop or frame for a floral arrangement, especially contrasted with the bold colors that are the flower fashion of 2025.
• Pots or sheaves of ornamental grass go beautifully with a rustic theme.
• Consider a wildflower bouquet and wildflower nosegays for your attendants. Not only are wildflowers gorgeous, they’re untamed, resilient survivors— talk about some next-level symbolism!
• Instead of the dated “bouquet toss” custom, why not gift each guest or each table with a bloom from your bouquet as you table-hop?
• Definitely repurpose the ceremony flowers at the reception, and maybe consider arranging for the floral décor to go to an elder living facility or
• An arrangement bringing together flowers, greenery, and some fresh, colorful fruits and/ or veggies can make a lovely centerpiece or be the perfect enhancement for a food station.
Most flower farmers are also floral designers who can do anything from crafting a glorious bouquet to decking out a venue.

something similar after the party, where they can brighten still more lives. Talk to your floral artist or flower farmer about this and other sustainability measures.
• Dried flowers are gorgeous and can be reused if handled gently.
• Don’t be afraid to go big and bold with your blossoms! How about a floral sculpture in a spot conducive to selfies?
• Bud vases with single blossoms on dinner tables add a touch of loveliness without blocking conversations as a bulky centerpiece might.
• Consider a monochromatic flower palette —think reds, oranges, blues, or golds—in which the variety is created by shades and shapes to pull your entire reception look together.

Photography
capturing your story
Your coming milestone marks an inflection point in the story of your tribe, a watershed moment in which a new branch in the stream of human history is formed. Lucky you—getting married in an age with so many great creative possibilities for capturing the occasion!
You’ll likely still want to do a batch of posed shots of various combinations of the fam and wedding party. (Take the time to note those with people’s names and relationships for extra gratitude from future generations.) But don’t just leave it there. Find a way to tell your story with flair. Create something you’ll share with pride and want to revisit over the coming years.
cinematic video
Talk to prospective photographers and videographers about creating a wedding chronicle that’s more than a simple series of key moments. You’ll want someone who can handle a camera and has solid editing skills, someone who gets what story you’re trying to tell and is creatively invested in telling it.
Create something you’ll share with pride and want to revisit over the coming years.

Watch a few short films for inspiration, so you’ll have a fresh sense of the possibilities: creative camera angles, fade-outs, zoom-ins, background music. Then check out the portfolios of likely prospects: are their shots well composed, with a pleasing symmetry? Do they know how to work with the available light to get those “wow” images? Are they telling an evocative story that’s well paced?
candid photos
Often, the images you’ll cherish aren’t the staged ones where everyone smiles at once on the count of three, but the organic moments that arise while you and your dearests are hugging, dancing, laughing, and talking like no one’s watching, caught up in the magic of the Day and the joy of one another.
Find an image creator who knows how to be a friendly fly on the wall and has a good eye, not just for romance, but for love: an older cousin helping a younger one at the dessert table, two older uncles who haven’t seen one another in a while sharing a drink, a grandparent soothing a baby, friends consumed by laughter.
Here again, check portfolios; you ought to be able to figure out who gets it pretty easily. Make sure they know you love and welcome candids, and set them free to mingle.

old school film
Much like the tonal quality of a vinyl recording, images shot on film can capture a warmth and depth that just isn’t there with digital equipment. Consider finding a photographer who’s comfortable working with a 35-mm camera and a darkroom for heirloom-quality analog images that rise to the level of art.
documentary-style photography

In this approach, your photographer will capture the day as it unfolds, looking for the images that will capture those important moments—the getting ready, the ceremony, the toasts—with an eye for creative storytelling, along with the unplanned micro-moments that add character and detail. They’re essentially a photojournalist, chronicling the Day in all of its grit, glamor, and glory.
Find an image creator who knows how to be a friendly fly on the wall and has a good eye, not just for romance, but for love.

content creation
Hiring someone with a gift for creating and curating social media content can take your wedding images to the next level of fun. With a smartphone, they can capture audio and video of moments—from the spotlight to behind the scenes—and present you with a selection of hundreds of images and short videos within a day or two.
Content creation is especially thoughtful when some of your cherished people can’t be there in person; a content creator could even go live for the ceremony and/or a few minutes of guest interviews or family greetings, so that those who want to join you—but can’t—can be with you in real time. Then there are the interactive possibilities of this kind of image-play. People can like and comment and share. You can even encourage your wedding party or guests to create clips and images of their own to add to the page with a special hashtag, building a story captured from a whole lot of angles at once.
Reviewing these captured moments lets you relive your wedding, complete with moments you didn’t get to see for yourself in person because, well, you were busy getting married.

The only hard and fast rule about reception food is that it should be delicious and there should be plenty of it. Planning a Hudson Valley wedding, you’re in the mother lode of both delicious local ingredients and inspired expertise, so don’t be afraid to dream. Some couples are taking an entirely different approach to reception meals, replacing the traditional sit-down dinner or buffet line with grazing tables and food stations offered throughout the reception so that guests can dance, talk, and eat, depending on their mood at the moment. Others love the elegance of an old-school plated dinner with carefully planned seating and uniformed servers. Some types of feasting work best with a buffet line; others are well suited to family-style tables, at which guests pass around the platters and bowls. Think about your tastes, your company, your venue’s layout, and the food you’ll be serving.

Interactive food stations are lovely fun, leading to a lot of random mingling.
Talk to caterers whose menus make you hungry, schedule tastings, and find somebody who gets your vision for the feast and has experience with the style you prefer. These days, many caterers have at least a couple of meat-free options in their repertoires; still others can whip out an entirely plant-based gourmet feast that will leave even ardent carnivores blissfully satiated.
Interactive food stations are lovely fun, leading to lots of random mingling. How about a buildyour-own taco bar, or a make-your-own-sundae bar for dessert? The possibilities are endless, from skewers to raw bars, from spring rolls and dim sum to salad bars loaded with fresh local fruits and veggies. A pizza station or hot dog cart with all the trimmings can be beyond delicious, with the right ingredients.
Themed cuisine repping one or both of your heritages—or any culinary culture that you happen to love—can inspire a food station or an entire menu, telling your love story to guests through the medium of flavor.

Elevated comfort food served family style on large platters that guests can pass around themselves can turn a table of relative strangers into friends by the time dessert is served. A wellplaced craft station or two, where guests can make flower crowns, decorate photo frames or mugs, or contribute to a giant group drawing has a similar mojo; people blend well when they’re having fun together.
After a couple of hours of dancing and general exuberance, you know everybody’s going to be hungry again. Wrapping the party up with a hearty late-night snack like tacos, sliders, or pizza with fresh, fancy coffee is a gracious and tasty trend that makes a ton of sense.

Drinks
a myriad of libation options

Wedding receptions are the perfect time to have a couple of drinks. Guests know where they’re going to be for the next couple of hours; they’re about to have a good meal and are indulging in exactly the kind of meeting, greeting, and mingling that works well with a bit of an alcohol buzz.
And while it’s possible to have a great party with nothing but a keg of beer and a box of wine, odds are you want to make your wedding libations a good bit more memorable than that. As with every aspect of the Big Day, you’ll want to do something that expresses your connection and enhances the occasion.
Photo by Love Me Do Photography.

Signature cocktails offer all kinds of possibilities. A good idea is to offer three choices here: two alcoholic choices with contrasting flavor and ingredient profiles, and a zero-proof option so that non-drinkers can get in on the fun. Think about classic, simple drinks; your bartender will appreciate the ease of service. Vodka with your juice of choice, Margaritas or Old-Fashioneds, and a simple but delicious mocktail will be easy to pour and tasty for your crowd. Make it extraspecial by using locally sourced liquor and fresh herbs and fruits for garnishes.

tower that is filled from the top and flows down to the lower tiers of glasses while your guests watch—that the person performing this feat is a pro. A collapsing flood of sticky bubbly and crashing glassware is more drama than you want. You can also buy structures that will support the glassware, giving you the beauty of a tower with less risk of disaster, or use prefilled glasses. And whatever you do, make sure it’s set up out of the wind and in a spot where it won’t get bumped into.
Those are tower basics; beyond that, the possibilities are nearly endless. How about alternating tiers of golden champagne and sparkling rosé? A tower of sparkling hard cider? (Local, of course!) A tower of espresso martinis? You can also use fancy etched, grooved, or colored glassware for a special look.
Tower settings can be decked with greenery, flowers, or satin ribbons to amp up the look to the next level.

A mocktail station near the bar is a terrific way to make non-drinking guests feel seen and loved, with lots of options for flavor and festive glassware. Consider making your non-alcoholic signature drink an adaptogenic choice that incorporates CBD, ginseng, or other good-for-you ingredients.

A coffee bar is another wonderful touch. Good coffee, with or without alcohol, can help keep the conversation and dance floor lit up and lively, and—especially when served up with some sliders or mini-tacos—provide the perfect after-dinner fortification as guests get ready to depart.

wedding dessert trends

Sweets

Alittle wedding cake history: In ancient Rome, couples would share the remnants of a cake of wheat or barley after it was smashed over the bride’s head. Alternatively, the guests would throw wheat or barley at the couple, and they’d be expected to scoop a few grains up and eat them. It was a fertility thing, and sounds as though it might have gotten a bit rowdy, with all that cake-breaking or grain-tossing.
Europeans of the 16th century devised an alternative to cake: the bride’s pie. Savory rather than sweet, the pie—at least according to one 1685 recipe—was filled with lamb testicles, pine kernels, oysters, and cockscombs, and couples who wanted to get really fancy might add live birds or a snake for the sheer entertainment value.
By the mid-20th century, most wedding couples in the United States had adopted the classic multitiered white-frosted confection with a topper. Rebels might go with yellow or even chocolate cake, or add some fruit between layers.

What a wonderful thing it is to be planning a wedding in the 21st century, when you can serve whatever you want as the grand finale of your feast. (Although people might well have issues with live birds or snakes, and lamb testicles have fallen out of favor.)
Cake meadows—in which your cake serves as the focal point of its own display of flowers, fruit, greenery, and/or vegetables—are a modern trend we love. Blossoms, foliage, and natural bounty surrounding all that beautiful sweetness can be just glorious; picture a taller floral piece as a backdrop, with cascades of glorious colorful nature flowing out from there to surround your baker’s masterwork.
That masterwork can be anything you like. How about a whole silhouette? Dome cakes are currently trending for a reason: they’re fresh and gorgeous. With a vast selection of proportions and shapes to choose from, a dome cake opens up whole new worlds of cake decoration.
Cakes can be gleaming metallic and jewel tones; cakes can be stacked geometric shapes. Cakes can be drizzled with fudge or fruit sauce, or gleam with rock candy geodes. Cakes can be towers of naked-sided layers topped with cream cheese frosting and berries. Cakes can be sculpted, stenciled, etched, or made to look like tiedye or stained glass.

A tower or a meadow presentation full of single-serving mini-cakes in two or three flavors—maybe with a toppings bar—is perfect for a wedding of free spirits. For that matter, you don’t need a cake at all. Options include ice cream sundaes, a selection of pie and fancy cookies, and goblets of creamy chocolate and raspberry mousse; the only requirement of a wedding dessert is that it be delightful.

Getting Dressed
wedding couture
Wedding gowns can be gloriously dramatic creations with fabulous floods of lace and rich brocade that make you feel like genuine royalty. The drawback is—and has always been—that they require you to maintain a demure, placid demeanor that can get pretty wearing over an 8 to 10 hour stretch. Once the ceremony is done, you want to be able to table-hop, eat, drink, and dance with joy and abandon—and pounds of precisely fitted white satin and lace can become an annoyance.

You don’t want to feel that way about a dress you dearly love! Enter the reception dress, one of many wedding hacks that sane couples have embraced. Your reception dress can show your loved ones your playful side, with a shorter hemline and easier fit, while keeping you feeling fabulous. A fine reception dress can also—unlike most bridal gowns—become a centerpiece of your special-occasion or night-on-the-town wardrobe.
Love the way you look in white lace? Check out the mini wedding dresses available these days, either as a reception option or to carry you through the whole day and on through the afterparty. Bridal minis are less expensive than full-length gowns and come in an endless variety of styles and fabrics.
Minis are also very “in” right now, which might sound good or might make you want to run away screaming. Remember, Rule One is to find a dress or dresses you love; and when in doubt on any other rule, refer back to Rule One. That said, some other cool things are very in right now: glowing silver beadwork, side slits, halter necklines, drop-waist corsets, and Basque-style waists, which flatter most shapes beautifully.
The joy of the reception dress is that it frees you to go as dramatic and formal with your ceremony dress as you like—living out your wildest fashion dream—whether that’s getting married in matching muumuus or rocking a lacy veil and a flowing train alongside a partner in a tailcoat.

accessories
Consider a crown adorned with seashells, flowers, pearls, or an heirloom brooch. A recent trend we love is for couples to loosely match their accessories, with, say, a crown of seashells for one and a seashell lapel pin for the other. Or consider matched bracelets or neckwear. The concept nicely underlines the point of the entire day.
shopping
Take a friend, or at most two, along for your wedding day outfit shopping; it should be someone who will offer honest feedback without trying to be the Big Boss. Try on styles you’ve never considered before. Look for the little details that add character: three-dimensional touches like flowers and applique, or subtle (or bold) geometric patterns.
free your attendants
Share the joy of liberation by giving your wedding attendants a color scheme and letting them make the rest of the choices involved. They don’t all have to match exactly to create a beautiful array; the smiles of people who are comfortable and confident are an accessory that can’t be bought.

say yes to soft glam and no to fuss
On the Day, you want to feel unselfconsciously, unapologetically gorgeous: gorgeous close up and gorgeous at a distance, gorgeous in every kind of lighting and in all kinds of photos. You probably want something a bit more than a super-low-key natural or no-makeup look for your moment in the spotlight, but you don’t want a look that feels overdone or harsh.
Get acquainted with the concept of “soft glam.” Soft glam is a step or two past the natural makeup look, which may not provide the definition and dazzle you want at a distance or for photos; it lasts 8–10 hours without fussing and lets you look and feel like yourself—your best self.

Romantic spirits may want to delve into the balletcore trend; it’s all about soft pinks and roses, about shimmery, soft finishes with a touch of sparkle.
Soft glam is subtlety: well-blended products, cheeks and lips in the same color family, a fresh, dewy glow. Romantic spirits may want to delve into the balletcore trend; it’s all about soft pinks and roses, about shimmery, soft finishes with a touch of sparkle.
To get an idea of what soft glam can do, watch a couple of YouTube tutorials. Comb Pinterest for looks you love, especially on people who have skin tone and features like yours. Do a little experimenting yourself: try out a jewel-toned or warm eyeshadow color for a pop of drama, paired with something subtler on your lips.
Makeup artists often post their most dramatic looks online; if you find one whose skills and attitude appeal, email or call and ask about soft glam. The right one will know exactly what you’re talking about and be able to show you the pictures to prove it. Schedule a trial run; bring along a picture of your dress and a few examples of looks you love, and don’t be afraid to veto anything that doesn’t feel like you

hair
Complement your elegantly simple look with soft waves, loose braids, or a sleek, timeless hairstyle. Or let your hair add that extra touch of glam: a regal and dramatic high-twist updo or a cascade of extensions, highlights, or balayage.
Whatever you do with your hair, what you don’t want is something so elaborate it demands constant fussing to look lovely. Pick a hairstyle that works with your natural texture. Another possibility: do a fancy updo for the ceremony and a few photos, then let it down and brush it out or gather it into a sleek, wavy pony for the dance floor.
Soft glam makeup and a hairstyle you feel comfortable wearing— that feels like you—can give you calm confidence, the inner glow that can’t be found in a bottle. And speaking of those bottles, there are terrific cruelty-free and sustainable brands on the market. Find a makeup artist who’ll use those to begin your married life with a blast of good karma—beautiful inside and out!

Jewelry
the perfect accent
In the 1930s, diamond company De Beers started bedazzling and photographing Hollywood influencers; in 1947, someone thought up the “A Diamond Is Forever” slogan, and today the stones are in almost 90% of American engagement rings.
Until 2005, when they were busted and fined, De Beers controlled supply to make sure prices
stayed high and insisted that true love required spending at least two months’ salary on an engagement ring. Science has since served them a heaping helping of karma in the form of equally sparkly, ethically sourced lab-grown diamonds, so there’s no need to forgo the sparkle if you love the look, and no need for anyone to overspend.

The ancient Greeks called pearls Aphrodite’s tears of joy.
The truly traditional wedding gem is—and has always been—the pearl. The ancient Greeks called pearls Aphrodite’s tears of joy. They’re considered symbolic of protection, serenity, love, strength, wealth, empowerment, romance, water, and the moon, and are said to bring good luck at a wedding. They, too, can be ethically sourced, as can many other gems.
Our area’s jewelers are inspired experts who can help you with wedding jewelry of every kind, from vintage to ultramodern oneof-a-kind originals, to reinventing an heirloom piece and making something lovely to match it. Bring them pictures or sketches of your favorite ideas, and they’ll make your dreams reality. Bring a picture of what you’ll be wearing on your Day to the shop to get a clearer sense of the styles that will stun; some necklines cry out for a glorious pendant, others for drop earrings or a sleek choker.

Matching gems or metals for you and your partner can take all kinds of beautiful forms, from bracelets to pins to pendants.
Matching gems or metals for you and your partner can take all kinds of beautiful forms, from bracelets to pins to pendants. You could even carry your favorite crystals (or any other meaningful item) and exchange them as part of your wedding rites. Colorful stones like emeralds, rubies, opals, and aquamarines have lots of symbolic lore attached, but don’t worry if it’s all about your favorite color, because nearly every gem is associated with love, protection, and peace.
You can braid strands of gems or crystals into your hairstyle, bedazzle your veil or headpiece, or wear an antique or ultramodern brooch at your waist. You may want to swap out your formal jewelry if you’re putting on a reception outfit. Or maybe not; how many times in your life will you have a tiara handy to don with your party dress?

There’s nothing like a shared sense of wonder to bring folks together.
set the stage for memory making
There’s nothing that compares to starting your married life off by sharing fun and laughter with your tribe. Good music for dancing is a great start, but it’s not hard to add a few extras into the recipe that will get people mingling and making memories together. a touch of magic

Consider hiring a mentalist or strolling magician to amaze and delight your guests and supercharge table conversations. Fire eaters, fire jugglers, and acrobats are showstoppers too. There’s nothing like a shared sense of wonder to bring folks together. art of happiness
Hire a plein air (outdoor) painter to capture the scene as it unfolds—your guests will love watching the picture emerge, and you’ll have a uniquely wonderful souvenir of the day. Or hire a caricaturist to sketch your guests. Set up an arts and/or crafts station where guests of all ages can get creative, and hang a large piece of posterboard next to it for a group creation.

party faces
Face painting isn’t just for kids anymore, although they’ll love it too. Hire a face painter and/or set up a glitter-and-feather station. (Make sure the latter is OK with your venue.) Have the art table set up so that guests can make simple masks and/or hats. game time
If you have outdoor space, set up some lawn games. Indoors, or on a patio, have some board games handy so non-dancers can challenge one another to a contest of luck or strategy. Giant Jenga and Connect4 sets are a blast. A wedding scavenger hunt can be a great way to keep the kids entertained. There’s nothing like friendly, funny competition to turn strangers into friends.
enhance the dance
Grab a few salsa lessons together and choreograph that first dance, or brainstorm a flash mob idea with your besties for mid-reception. Only you know your crowd; there are people who go absolutely bonkers with joy over old chestnuts like the Electric Slide, the Limbo, or the Conga, and others whose spirits soar with a newer line dance or two thrown into the mix.
Do yourselves a favor, though, and make sure your band, DJ, or chosen playlist steers clear of songs about love gone bad, cheating hearts, and the like. This can mean double-checking the lyrics and ditching some absolute ravers, but there are enough great love songs, party rockers, and odes to joy out there to help you avoid those dissonant notes..

Wedding registries have evolved, and it’s beautiful. Gone are the days when couples were expected to register at several department stores for fancy tableware and linens and have their wedding attendants and close family pass the word.
Today’s universal wedding registries are a thing of beauty; they offer a place where you can dream up a list of your heart’s desires from all sorts of sources and edit it as you go along. Like every trend we celebrate in these parts, it’s all about the freedom to show your love your way.

Ask for things that you will love and use, and give your loved ones a wide price range.
So dream up your list as soon after you get engaged as possible, and we do mean dream! Read the fine print on a few different registry sites and choose one that offers flexibility and customer service help. Ask for things that you will love and use, and give your loved ones a wide price range. Keep an eye on things as your wedding approaches and make sure there are always at least a couple of choices on the low end of that range.
under super-cozy blankets, gardening, or all of the above.
Think about that labor-saving gadget you keep postponing. Keep it fun, PG (unless, of course, your guest list is R-rated by design!), and focused on your wishes as a couple.

Think about the things you love to do together, whether it’s travel, outdoor sports, fine wine and food, snuggling on the couch
It’s more than fine to offer people the chance to contribute to a honeymoon, home improvement, or home down payment fund, or to make charitable contributions to a cause you love. Your dearests want to celebrate you and make you happy. Make it easy for them.

the wedding favor
A wedding favor is a tangible token of your gratitude that your beloved people have joined you in celebrating—a small memento with countless good vibes attached.
Little gifts for wedding guests are a tradition that transcends time and culture, with firm roots in the best human instincts. A wedding favor is a tangible token of your gratitude that your beloved people have joined you in celebrating—a small memento with countless good vibes attached. A wedding favor
should carry a whiff of that emotion with it, so that the sight of it brings a warm smile and a happy memory long after the honeymoon’s over.
Ancient Romans liked to use small containers of honey or fruit, sweet symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and fertility. Centuries later, in Renaissance

You are absolutely free to do whatever will spark maximum joy, represent who you are as a couple, and complement the tone and décor of your Day.
Europe, wealthy couples distributed bonbonnières, small, fancy containers of sweets; sugar was a luxury back then, and beyond that, the containers themselves might be made of precious metal, gems, or crystal.
Sugared almonds, love knots made of lace and ribbon, and small bells all became popular favors in various places. Etiquette historians say the tradition spread from the wealthy to the growing middle classes, but we suspect that small gifts at such moments were probably always a thing and gem-encrusted bonbonnières just got all the publicity.
The number five is another wedding-favor tradition worth noting. Five can’t be divided (nifty symbolism, that!) and represents five classic wedding wishes: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity.
It’s a bit hard to imagine what one did with a gem-encrusted box the right size for five sugared almonds, besides dusting it every so often, a task that probably fell to the help. Thankfully, here—as with most wedding choices—you are absolutely free to do whatever will spark maximum joy, represent who you are as a couple, and complement the tone and decor of your Day.

favorable inspirations
Why not go sustainable? Seeds or growing plants have a symbolic power that’s pitch-perfect for forming your fresh little fam.
Personalize a mug and fill it with five herbal tea bags (or more, if you wish; they’ll just have to think up some extra blessings to send your way as they sip their tea).
Handmade soaps can be personalized in all sorts of ways. Choose a special scent, have the bars engraved, and nestle them into pretty little mesh bags that can be hung in the shower.
Aromatherapy and light spell “We love you.” It’s hard to go wrong with a lovely and delicious-smelling candle, or even a set of five mini-candles, if you want to go trad.
Nicely presented gourmet candy is a crowd-pleaser, and there are loads of choices. Or how about the perfect cookie?
Of course, you can still find the traditional sugared almonds in all sorts of presentations. Individual packets of mixed nuts could convey the same delicious message in an entirely different flavor of symbolism.

Pledge your love, then throw a party. We’ll make it extraordinary— large or small, formal or casual, traditional or contemporary. Say “I do,” high on a hillside. Celebrate in a restored 19th-century barn, on the banks of a famous fly-fishing river, or in a grand ballroom. The food is farm fresh. The cocktails are handcrafted. Your love is forever.
