tips for choosing a venue

One of the biggest wedding decisions you’ll need to make is the setting for your grand production. (Even small, simple weddings are grand, just because they’re weddings.) Here in the Hudson Valley, your choices range from glamorous mansion halls to repurposed vintage barns, from mountain meadows to chic post-industrial lofts.

Wedding at Owls Hoot Barn.

Here in the Hudson Valley, venue choices range from glamorous mansion halls to repurposed vintage barns, from mountain meadows to chic post-industrial lofts.

To ensure lots of choices, you’ll want to start looking at least a year before you plan to marry — many places are booked that far ahead. Seek places that take your breath away, then consider the following factors before you make that final decision.

• Be generous with dates: You’ll have more options if you start your venue search with several possible dates or a date range, rather than a single date set in stone.

• Think outside the banquet-hall box: Many places that you might not expect — historic sites, parks, entertainment venues — offer weddings. Check with your favorites before you assume that your only choices are places that specialize in getting folks hitched.

• Clarify the venue space: Make sure you’re very clear on what each place offers in terms of spaces. Is that pagoda included in your reservation, or will another group be having a retirement bash there?

11
Wedding at Seminary Hill. Photo by Teresa Horgan Photography. Wedding at The Ryan Family Farm. Photo by Jeanette Joy Photo. Wedding at Whitby Castle.

Be clear about a venue’s rules, policies, and exactly what services and equipment are provided.

Will you be able to use that dramatic staircase as a photo backdrop? Ask lots of questions and take lots of pictures.

• Know what’s included: Be equally clear about exactly what services and equipment are provided. At some places, you may need to bring in everything from extension cords to tablecloths, but if they’ve done weddings before, they may well have suggestions about where to find what you need; other places offer wedding packages that include all the trimmings, but may not be flexible about working with outside vendors, and many places are somewhere in between. Just get it all written down so you can compare.

• Avoid surprises: Be sure you know the rules and policies. Some places have to shut down amplified music past a certain time. Others need you to get your own event permit and/or insurance. Unsexy little details like these are important in avoiding unpleasant surprises.

• Logistics: Make sure you’ll have plenty of parking, and that the spots where the action will be (and the restrooms!) are handicapped accessible.

wedding planning 101

Some people thrive on the nitty-gritty details of wedding planning, and if that’s you, have fun! Other couples, though, know what they want the Big Day to look like but aren’t sure

how to get there — or just don’t want to add a long list or organization jobs to their busy lives.

If you fall into the second group, think about hiring a planner.

Photo by Olya Vysotskaya. Flowers by Flora Good Times. Planning by Gina Maloney Events.

A planner is your point person and your native guide to the local wedding world, so hiring the right person is one of the most important choices you’ll make.

picking a planner

A wedding planner’s duties, should you hire one early in the process, can include helping you work out a budget, finding, hiring, and communicating with the vendors who’ll make your dream come true, organizing the day-of schedule, and making sure all the moving parts fit together smoothly on the Big Day (or Big Weekend, if you’re doing that).

It’s a big job, and it’s key to a smooth celebration. A planner is your point person and your native guide to the local wedding world. So hiring the right person is, like choosing a venue, one of the most important choices you’ll make. Here are some things to consider and questions to ask:

choosing the right planner

• Do your styles mesh? A great planner can work with everything from formal romantic to backyard hoedown, but what won’t work is tension between the two of you. To avoid that, figure out upfront how hands-on you want and need to be. Some planners love to get your input at every turn; others prefer to take the reins and handle details themselves. Make sure you know which sort of service you’re after, and hire someone who’ll provide exactly that.

• Can this planner execute your vision within your budget? Ask to see photos and cost breakdowns for past weddings they’ve handled at a similar price point to get an idea of what you can expect. A thorough, honest discussion of costs is the only way to prevent hassles and unwelcome surprises.

Events
Party Rentals Flowers: Athabold Planning: Main Course Events

You want a planner who loves the work and will bring their own creative excitement into the process.

• What kind of staff does the planner have, and what jobs and decisions might get delegated to someone else? Will the planner or an assistant be there to coordinate on the Big Day? Do they seem enthusiastic about your vision? You want a planner who loves the work and will bring their own creative excitement into the process. This is your Big Event, and you deserve to work with someone who honors that.

working with a planner

• Make a list of everything you consider essential, whether it’s specific decor touches, custom signage, or particular rituals. Rough out a plan that includes all of these and an approximate schedule, and go over it with your planner. They can’t know that you need rose petals for a brigade of flower children, or would rather skip the garter toss, unless you tell them.

• Make sure you are crystal clear about who’s handling what and exactly what services are included in the planner’s job description, down to dull details like permitting and insurance.

• It’s a good idea to make the seating plans yourselves. You know these people.

• A planner can usually provide a tipping guide that will specify industry-standard tips for various types of vendors.

• If you’re planning to hold all or part of the festivities outdoors, make sure you and your planner both understand the Plan B you’ll use in case of rain.

tips for greening your wedding

You’re planning this whole celebration because of love, yes? So what could be more loving than a deep green, sustainable wedding that showers that love on Mother Earth Herself? Eco-friendly ideas can be infused throughout your wedding plan without making it any less lavish or memorable. Here are some simple ways to do that.

Be thoughtful about your gem. Non-conflict, lab-grown diamonds catch the light just as beautifully. Repurposing a vintage or heirloom piece can add layers of meaning.

Use recycled stationery. Many stationers offer recycled paper choices. Or go superbly symbolic by using seed paper that can be planted.

Go green for your reception. Some of the most enchanting venue choices take great pride in their eco-friendly practices, whether that means an efficient building, a great recycling program, or both and more.

Use natural décor. Look for spots with built-in beauty: gardens, wineries, greenhouses, farms, parks,

33

What could be more loving than a deep green, sustainable wedding that showers that love on Mother Earth Herself?

exposed beams, brick, stone, flowing water, mountain backdrops. The more you love what’s already there, the less you’ll need to bring in from elsewhere—saving money, effort, and the planet in one smooth move.

Encourage justice. In making your registry, look for ethically sourced and Fair Trade gifts made by companies that value making the world better. Or, if you’d rather, create a charity registry focused on environmental causes.

Apparel choice matters. Check out the wares of sustainably-minded and ethical wedding dress designers, or see what’s available on the growing variety of pre-loved wedding gown sites out there. Consider renting tuxes: Very few people actually

need a full-time tuxedo in their closet these days.

Live plants are a great choice. Potted flowers and greenery can make a gorgeous alternative to displays of cut flowers. If you do need some blooms (as one does sometimes!), opt for local and in-season choices from a florist who’s eco-conscious. Get the best life out of your floral and decor items by dropping them off at a hospital, senior center, youth center, or homeless shelter after the festivities.

Be mindful of food/beverage choices. Look for sustainably minded caterers who source from local farms, and serve local beverages. (Not that hard to find in the Hudson Valley and Cats, if we do say so ourselves.)

34

Potted flowers and greenery can make a gorgeous alternative to displays of cut flowers.

Share the love (and food). See if you can arrange to get reception leftovers to some hungry people; at nationalgleaningproject.org you’ll find Hudson Valley-based food recovery organizations who can help.

Avoid disposables. Rent real china, glassware, and table linens instead of adding more single-use, single-serving piles to the landfill. Eco-friendly, and more attractive besides.

Consider useful favors. Also eco-friendly and chic: locally made snacks and artisanal foodstuffs as edible favors.

Rice is not nice. Skip the rice or confetti throwing. If something must be thrown, go with fresh, fragrant herbs or micro-flowers.

Research your post-wedding destination. Honeymoon with love! It’s easier than ever to find cool destinations that are mindful of their carbon footprints.

designing your invitations & stationery

Photo by Love Me Do Photography.

Getting and sending personal snail mail is delightfully exotic these days. And how many occasions encourage creating pretty, personalized paperwork?

That said, wedding stationery is one aspect of planning that you can get handled as soon as your venue and date are firm. It’s also an area in which you have a lot of flexibility. All you absolutely need to have are invitation cards with the who, what, when, and where spelled out and response (RSVP) cards with self-addressed, stamped envelopes; everything else can be delegated (for example, the shower organizer handles the shower invitations) or organized online.

If you love the idea of a keepsake suite of wedding papers, consider working together to create a logo that’s meaningful to you as a couple and sprinkling it across any or all of the following:

your personalized ceremony

A wedding ceremony is a joyous, life-changing moment. You’re stepping into a new reality together, declaring to the world, the gathered guests and one another that you’re officially united, par-

taking in one of the most significant traditions in human history. There may be lots of memorable moments on your wedding day, but no memory will compare to the ritual that bound you together.

Photo by Love Me Do Photography.

Ceremonies can be as traditional or original as your wildest dreams.

Of the many, many millions of weddings in human history, yours will be like no other, because it’s yours. Ceremonies, which used to be fairly standard, can be as traditional or original as your wildest dreams. Do yours in the way that brings the most shared joy. It’s a fun conversation to have.

Writing your own wedding vows, whether you’re scripting your entire ceremony from scratch or just composing a couple of paragraphs to add to tradition, can be a wonderful part of being engaged, a chance to retreat from the hustle and bustle of practical planning and spend some time contemplating the reasons you’re doing this in the first place, a chance to set goals, dream dreams, share a special memory right out loud.

Start the process a few months before the Big Day. Keep a pad and pen handy. Jot notes to yourself as you think of them. How’d you meet? When did you know it was so right? What are the qualities you most cherish? Who do you want to become together? What do you promise?

Organize this into a 300-500 word draft and get it into electronic form for easier editing. Read your draft over a couple of times a week. Read it aloud, so you can get used to the flow, but don’t try to memorize; bring a copy on an elegant scroll, read a sentence or two, then look into your love’s eyes. Much better than forgetting your lines.

by

Don’t read it to your partner. Surprise each other. But do share it with your officiant, who will gain a deeper understanding of your journey and will also need to plan for moments such as the exchange of rings.

unity rites

Light a flame together. Unity candle rituals can be modified to include your parents or kids. Outdoor ceremony? Think about a torch or a firepit.

Wrap yourselves in love. Have your officiant place something around both of your shoulders—a blanket, a cord, a scarf.

Small wedding? Gather everyone in a circle; consider letting anyone who feels moved say a few words. Blessings. Pass your rings around among the guests, letting everyone there infuse them with their love and joy. Or you can pass a length of fabric or cord, then make a braid or a knot together as a symbol of your union. Handfasting. In this ritual, you hold opposite hands—forming an

infinity symbol—while your officiant binds them together with ribbon, cord, or fabric.

Blend. Prepare two elegant containers of compatible beverages of your choice which you can ceremonially blend, and then sip from the same cup.

Cleanse. Wash each other’s hands or feet. Joined at the head. Place crowns on one another’s heads, or garlands around one another’s necks.

Get back to nature. Blend together some soil from each of your childhood homes or favorite places, then plant a seedling in this together. Get it on paper. Sign a copy of your vows together with an elegant pen.

floral decor

What could make finer wedding decor than flowers, those vivid reminders of Nature’s own love story? They come in so many colors, shapes, and sizes that you’re sure to find something that fits your vision, whether you’re going for dignified

formal, lush romantic, sunshiny exuberant, countryside casual, or post-post-neo-modern.

So here are some ideas for incorporating floral and natural elements into your decor without breaking the bank:

Flowers come in so many colors, shapes, and sizes that you’re sure to find something that fits your vision.

56
Flowers by Petal Creek Farm.

• Do your research. Whether you’re hiring a florist or planning to DIY, make time to visit flower shops and flower farms and browse the floral internet. You’ll get invaluable insight into the available choices and the art of arranging them.

• Go seasonal : Blooms that are local and in season are better for your budget and better for the planet. A florist will know which ones these are, and can make suggestions if you give them a general color palette to work with.

• Au naturel: The ultimate eco-friendly DIY is, of course, a garden or meadow wedding in late spring or early summer. Even with this in your favor, you may want a bouquet, a boutonniere, an arrangement

at the ceremonial spot, and perhaps some centerpieces.

• Sometimes less is more. A perfect bud vase is all you need in the powder room; depending on your taste, it may be all you need on each reception table. If you decide to go with more elaborate floral centerpieces, make sure table-mates can still see one another and chat comfortably.

• Floral arrangements make a wonderful display at the doorways of your ceremony and reception spaces, with their beauty and fragrance welcoming guests into the special world of your wedding.

• Ceremony flowers: Choose ones that can be repurposed at the reception venue. If you want some at the end of each

aisle of seating, for example, these can be gathered into a mass for use around the head table and at the bar, or wherever you like.

• Reuse: Consider the possibilities of potted plants and flowers or even trees that you can take home and nurture in your house or yard.

• Go fake: Silk flowers are less expensive than real blooms, and can make a lovely archway garland—or hairpiece if you want something that won’t wilt even a little as you dance the night away.

• Your bouquet: It can be as splashy and massive or delicate and discreet as you want, but keep in mind that the bouquet— along with whatever flowers the two of you and your attendants will be carrying or wearing—will be in a great many of your photos. You’ll want blooms that stand out and hold up well.

• Greenery and decorative grasses, with and without flowers, add lovely, lush accents to any style of decor.

Make sure these are staged in a way you like. getting ready

Make sure you’re feeling ready enough for this! Some people cherish photos taken while you still have a towel wrapped around your hair; some would rather the camera person wait until the last few dabs of makeup are going on. Communicate clearly, so you’ll get the results you want.

first look

Some people prefer that the First Look happens as the bride walks down the aisle; if so, your photographer will need to be quick to get reaction shots from both your partner and your parents. Other couples organize a few minutes of First Looks shots in a quiet, pretty spot to get those priceless reactions one at a time. Talk to your camera person to find out which they prefer and why, and take that into consideration for the best results.

Ask the photographer to include a panoramic shot of the whole gathering before tightening the focus to you two and your officiant. Also ask them to get some reaction shots from parents and grandparents; make sure they know who’s who and where key people are seated.

What’s sweeter than that first kiss at the altar?

Maybe that second kiss as you run up the aisle, pause for a moment to relish your brandnew married state, and pull each other close, maybe framed widely enough to capture the smiles of your guests.

Make sure your photographer is clear on how formal or informal you want this to be. Will the DJ be announcing you, your wedding party and close family, or would it be easier to grab some arrival shots from the venue steps? (Speaking of the venue, you’ll want a panorama shot here, too, to capture its beauty.)

choosing your

Hudson Valley food is one of the big things that make this such a great place to get married. We have all the right ingredients, a global blend of cuisines, and a superb smorgasbord of culinary artists who’ll make your wedding feast a memory to be savored. Here are some tips for choosing and working with the people who bring the wow factor to the table:

ask the venue

Lots of wedding venues can provide you with caterer suggestions. Choosing someone who’s worked with your venue in the past can simplify things, since they’ll already know the people and the layout involved.

money matters

Know your budget and have a general idea of what kind of food you’d like to serve.

76
Catered by Mazzone Hospitality. Catered by Blue Mountain Bistro to Go. Catered by Cucina Woodstock.

begin locally

Start your search online, but close to home: See if your favorite restaurant does catering, or that place you keep meaning to try. Ask friends about favorite flavor finds in the wild. Once you have a few ideas, check out not just their websites but any social media you can find for reviews, food photos, specials, and overall vibes.

important questions

Make your list of possibilities and reach out by phone or email to find out whether they are available on your date and can work with your venue, whether they’re licensed and insured, and any other questions that are make or break: can they accommodate a special dietary need? Do they offer tastings? Do they charge by bulk or by the plate? Are custom menus available? Do they offer bar service? Getting key things straight up front streamlines your process.

77
Catering by Catskill Catering. Catering by Chef Zach Berger. Photo by Steven Howard. Catering by Angela’s Pizza.

taste and see

Pick your top three or four choices and set up appointments, preferably with tastings. Make them within the same week or two, so you’ll have fresh tasty notes and memories from each to compare. Take pictures and jot down reactions.

check protocol

Ask process questions: how much time will they need for setup and cleanup? What kind of team will be there? Who handles event permits? When will they need a deposit, final menu choices, and a final head count? Where do they source their food? What are the serving options — buffet, family style, individual plates — and what does each cost? Do they provide linens and tableware — if not, can they suggest rental options? What’s their cancellation policy?

pick your top three or four choices and set up appointments , preferably with tastings .

clarify your wishes

Be specific about your vision for the day—themed, formal, casual, large, small, or somewhere in between. They may have some good culinary or service ideas that will fit beautifully.

over - communicate

As with all things wedding-related, communication and cooperation are the key to a great catering experience. When you’ve made your choice and gotten the contract signed, make sure you connect your caterer to your venue coordinator and stay in touch as The Day draws nearer.

A Trend That’s Here to Stay

extended cocktail menus

85

Ask anyone, and they will likely tell you that cocktail hour is their favorite food element at a wedding. This preference is all the more reason why extended cocktail hour weddings are trending now more than ever! When speaking with their caterer, one of the most challenging moments for a couple is deciding which hors d’oeuvres to choose. With an extended cocktail menu, depending on the duration of your wedding, you can select five options per hour, leaving you with plenty of delectable choices.

Grazing tables are also trending heavily, an excellent choice for incorporating into the cocktail hour wedding. Selecting a caterer proficient in creating a beautifully displayed grazing table will offer the wedding guests the “wow!” factor while providing them with scrump-

tious choices to complement the cocktails they consume. What else is trending? Global flavors, by a landslide. With Gen Z couples accounting for the most diverse group of couples in history, there’s great demand for representing their various backgrounds — and there is no better way to do so than through food, music, and decor. An extended cocktail menu for their wedding allows them to offer every flavor profile they desire. And an extended cocktail menu also allows satisfies yet another trend: creatively honoring the diverse dietary restrictions of their guests so that everyone leaves the wedding thrilled and talking about how glorious the food was for years to come.

Discuss your ideas with your wedding planner, caterer, and

Continue the mood and offer an extended dessert menu in sweet amuse-bouche style.

designer so they can collaborate on an extended cocktail wedding menu that fits the wedding theme. From stationary grazing tables to stations divided by global flavors or streetfood style — or perhaps you create food elements to match the mood of each section of the wedding — there are endless choices to offer a surprise and delight each hour of your wedding. Think of the possibilities that a set-up of mini-cart displays can offer, allowing guests to pull up to each station to experience whatever spin each cart holds. You can even request that the service team dress up in a theme befitting the style of food you represent at each cocktail station.

Traditional wedding cakes, as lovely as they are, are not trending as heavily as themed-out, large dessert dis-

plays. Why not continue the mood and offer an extended dessert menu in sweet amuse-bouche style?

Even your late-night snack sendoff can be a fun take-home box of cocktail menu items you and your caterer can brainstorm to encapsulate the unionization of your joyful nuptials. Get creative and secure a fantastic team of wedding professionals who will make your extended cocktail menu wedding bring everyone the happiness you desire and a happy wedding!

What’s Trending

wedding day libations

Hey, let us freshen up that drink for you. Your wedding day libations should be satisfying and memorable, with or without alcohol. Here are some beverage trends and suggestions we love that will have guests glowing:

Signature cocktails are fun. Find a crowd-pleasing recipe, or mix up a batch for the punch bowl; you can take it a step further and print your wedding logo on cups or glasses, or go all the way out by having a batch custom-canned or bottled.

Your wedding day libations should be satisfying and memorable, with or without alcohol.

Have a coffee bar. Espresso martinis and other coffee-infused drinks add a touch of energy for the dance floor, and it broadens your nonalcoholic offerings nicely as well.

Speaking of those non-alcoholic offerings, go beyond water and soda into mocktails (how about a mocktail version of that signature drink?), infused choices (CBD? Lavender?), kombucha, or boba tea.

Designated drivers and pregnant folk need love too!

89

Open bar: If your dream party includes unlimited access, go for it. Consider a mobile bar, and ask if they can pair it with a “flair” bartender who will delight guests with mixological feats. That said, beer, wine, and your signature punch—along with something sparkly for a toast—are all the alcohol you really need to offer, especially at an afternoon reception.

Consider hiring a “flair” bartender who will delight guests with mixological feats.

Think seasonal: Hot toddies and cinnamon toasties for a winter reception, cherry blossoms or margaritas for spring, cool gin drinks and fruit-infused options in summer, cider and spices for the fall. Plan it out: The standard calculator for matching your beverage purchase to your head count is one drink per person per hour. A bottle of wine is typically five drinks, a fifth of booze contains 16 shots, and a half-keg holds 124 pints of beer.

let them eat cake

...Or Other Desserts

Most wedding couples embrace the tradition of serving cake on this sweetest day, and it’s easy to see why: Wedding cakes can be utterly gorgeous and delicious. If you decide to go this route, you have a great many choices: Buttercream or fondant? Flavors? Shape? Decoration? As with other vendors, choose and reserve your baker several months ahead of time for the best selection and results.

But not everybody likes cake, and lots of other choices— either instead of or in addition to—can add a sweet note to your feasting. Here are some other possibilities to consider:

Cupcakes: Choose them in your wedding colors!

Cheesecakes: An array topped with various berries and sauces look (and taste) luscious.

Tiny pie: Miniature key lime or lemon meringue pies are cute and just the right size.

Hand-held desserts: Eclairs or cannoli are easy to eat. Fancy it up with croquembouche, a classic French confection of spun sugar and creampuffs.

95
Photo by Love Me Do Photography.

Individual servings of pudding, mousse or custard are always welcome.

Food as art: A donut wall or pyramid is fun and pretty.

Traditional: Dancing the night away is hot work. Ice cream with a choice of toppings hits the spot.

Viva Italia: Millefoglie is a traditional Italian wedding favorite with layers of puff pastry, fresh fruit, and creamy custard.

But wait, there’s more: Crepes or pancakes, tiramisu, or beautifully decorated cookies are fun go-tos.

Cake alternatives can be styled to add plenty of elegance and “wow” factor.

on the table

Cake alternatives can be styled to add plenty of elegance and “wow” factor. Start by styling the table with a fine cloth—maybe creamy linen for a traditional venue setting, red-and-white checks for a rustic look, or something sparkling and metallic in a sleek modern setting. Add some decorative touches—greenery, flowers, fruit, small clear bowls of crystals, whatever you love. Use dessert towers to arrange individual servings for an elegant, abundant look. And for a nice final touch, add a platter of fresh fruit, cheese, or charcuterie so those who avoid sweets completely will still have a tasty after-dinner snack.

dressing the part

Choosing your wedding dress should be joyous, not exasperating and exhausting. There are things you can do to shop smarter, not harder, and find something stunning:

• Browse online. When you see something striking, take note of the description: Empire waist? Bateau neck? Cathedral train? Get familiar with the terms so you’ll be able to describe what you’re looking for. There are AI virtual try-on apps in which you can upload a photo and try out different styles and silhouettes.

• Call a few bridal salons. Find out which designers they carry, ask about price range, accessories available, whether they can do alterations on-site, and whether there are any major sales scheduled soon. Choose two or three that carry different designers for maximum options

• Don’t assume you know your size. Bridal couture tends to run smaller than everyday clothing, so don’t be surprised to discover at your appointment that you may need to go up a size or two. Don’t assume this means you’re too heavy and need to lose weight for size 8. Order what will fit comfortably, and if you do slim down, it’s a lot easier to take a dress in than let it out.

• Bring a notepad. It’s the best way to keep track of dress details and prices as you shop; maybe make quick sketches. Many salons won’t allow photography until you’ve finalized your purchase.

102
Dress from Lambs Hill Bridal Boutique. Photo by Cassandra Daye Photography.

Bridal couture tends to run smaller than everyday clothing.

• Bring trusted friends. That means one or two close, low-drama, patient people who know your taste (and whose taste you trust.) People who’ll tell you the truth.

• Read the fine print. Your contract should specify manufacturer, size, style number and color, as well as any alterations or modifications with an estimate of what these will cost and how long they will take. When will the dress be ready for the final fitting? What recourse do you have if something goes wrong? Get it all in writing before you pay a deposit.

• Putting it all together. For your final fitting, don’t forget to wear or bring the right undergarments, accessories, jewelry, and footwear.

• Consider comfort. Remember that while your ceremony is probably well under an hour long, you’ll want to be comfortable all day. Some dresses flex well, allowing you to shed frillier details like a bustle, train, or shawl and have something you can work with on the dance floor. If you want a luxuriously formal gown, consider choosing a second look for the reception, something that’s still stunning but easier to romp in—the possibilities here are endless.

hair & makeup

As you may have noticed, getting ready for your wedding can be a lot more involved than just about any other event in life. Even if you’re generally a casual soul, you want your look to be flawless and on point; and if you usually step out looking like

a model, you’ll probably want to dial it up to dazzling. If you want to DIY, leave plenty of time for research and practice. If you opt to work with a hair and makeup professional, here are some tips to simplify the process and get the gorgeous results you want:

If you want to DIY your hair and makeup, leave plenty of time for research and practice.

If going pro, choose a stylist with wedding experience.

• Choose a stylist with wedding experience; check out their work online or ask to see a portfolio to make sure you’re on the same gorgeous page.

• Schedule a trial run for your hair and makeup to get a sense of your overall look. To bring: any hair ornaments you plan to wear, one or two close friends, and a photo of your gown to show your stylist. Wear a top with a similar neckline and color.

• Tell your stylist whether you’ll be outdoors or in, and a little about your venue.

• Pay attention to what the stylist does and get a list of the products and shades they’re using, so you can be better prepared for touch-ups.

• Don’t be afraid to speak up! If something is just not you, say so—don’t assume the expert knows better. This is about looking your very best and you are the ultimate expert on what that looks like.

Pay attention to what the stylist does and get a list of the products and shades they’re using, so you can be better prepared for touch-ups.

• Get a written agreement that specifies what will happen on The Day. Will the entire wedding party be getting hair and makeup done? Just you, or you and your main attendant? How much time will the stylist need?

• Tip generously and then go have some fun and a meal. Take a few pictures to see how your look holds up.

• Go easy on the partying and get a good night’s sleep on Wedding Eve if you possibly can.

express your inner sparkle

Chances are that from the moment you wake up on The Day till the last dance, you’ll be sparkling with joy. Well-chosen jewelry will express that inner sparkle, complementing your

wedding finery and your smile by catching the light just right. It’s all about highlighting your face and balancing your gown’s style. Here are some tips to guide your choices:

Necklaces

Well-chosen jewelry will express that inner sparkle, complementing your wedding finery and your smile.

Fancy vs. simple: If your gown is elaborate and detailed, think simple pieces: a choker or drop necklace with one gleaming stone, stud earrings to match. If your gown is simpler, you can add drama with statement pieces—dangling earrings, an ornate princess necklace, or a lacy bib. If your gown is strapless, consider a choker or collar necklace, with or without dangling, sparkling earrings.

A one-shoulder gown: It speaks for itself. Skip the necklace and let the gown’s details do the work; simple drop or stud earrings will do the rest.

High collar? Here, too, skip neck pieces and wear understated, elegant drop or post earrings, with or without a flash of color.

117
Earrings by J Bliss Studios. Earrings by Kria World.

If your gown is elaborate and detailed, think simple pieces.

Boat neck: Gowns with this neckline highlight the loveliness of a slender chain with a diamond solitaire or other single stone paired with stud earrings.

Scoop neck: It looks lovely with a choker or collar necklace and matching studs. Or skip the necklace entirely and go with dramatic drop earrings.

Sweetheart or V necklines: They pair perfectly with a pretty pendant that just reaches your collarbone. Larger pendants go with wider V-necks; if yours is narrow, keep the pendant small and simple. Think about a pendant with clean, straight lines to contrast the sweeping curves in play.

helps make things right,

choosing your wedding music

Nothing lifts hearts and brings a crowd together like music. Your wedding music choices become the soundtrack for indelible memories, so choose thoughtfully, whether you decide to hire a band, hire a DJ, or create a playlist that’s all you.

Things to consider in deciding which to choose:

Live music: There’s nothing like the energy of a live band interacting with a packed dance floor. That said, bands are the most expensive choice, require the most logistical effort, and may or may not have all of your favorites in their repertoires.

DJ: Hiring a DJ takes the pressure off; many DJs will serve as master of ceremonies, guiding the crowd through your reception schedule. If you decide to hire a DJ, check out their work either in person or on video to make sure their style will mesh with your plans, and

make sure you make those plans crystal clear—which rituals you intend to include, which songs to play, and which ones to avoid.

Research: Whether you’re hiring a band or a DJ, the process is much the same as finding any other wedding vendor: Ask around, look on social media, and then reach out to a handful of ones you like for in-person discussions about your vision and whether they can make it happen.

DIY: Making your own playlist is a project, although technology has made it simpler. You’ll need a premium music platform, like Spotify or iTunes, to avoid commercial interruptions, and steer clear of explicit lyrics and breakup laments that might spark thoughts that a) horrify Great Aunt Wanda or b) bring an emotional guest to unhappy tears. Delegate a wedding attendant or two to be on alert for tech issues.

key moments

These are the times when you’ll want to choose songs that really resonate, no matter who’s providing them. ceremony

• Processional music as the wedding party enters

• Bride’s entrance

• Any songs you choose to include in your ceremony. Even if you’re not hiring a band, a solo vocalist, harpist, or chamber music trio can be a lovely touch here.

• Recessional music at ceremony’s end.

reception

• Couple’s grand entrance

• First dance

• Father/daughter and/or mother/son dances

• Cake cutting

• Bouquet toss and garter toss, if you’re doing these

• Last dance

• Grand exit

Fill the rest of your playlist with your favorites: mellow tunes for getting ready, inspiring and lovely music as the guests await the ceremony, upbeat songs while people are mingling during the cocktail hour, dinner tunes at a volume that won’t overwhelm conversations, and a mix of bangers and slow songs for after-dinner dancing. You know your crew: Will they jump up to do the Electric Slide or join the conga line? If you and they will love it, who cares if it’s an old chestnut? Second only to getting married, it’s the fun that’s the point.

crafting your gift registry

Get creative together about what you’ll both enjoy. Twentieth-century wedding gift concepts were wonderful for people who’d been living with their parents until their wedding night and lacked housewares and appliances...

137

Wedding gifts originated with the dowry custom of centuries past, in which her family gave his family money, land, and possibly livestock as a gesture of gratitude, shall we say. Young women were given “dowry chests” in which to stash gifts and resources that would sustain a newly forming household. Gems, precious metals, and the like were in vogue before the French started a trend toward linens.

In the American South, it was tradition that the bride receive a key basket with the keys to her new home. In 1924, Macy’s came up with the marketing concept of the wedding registry, and soon every retailer was doing it.

Twentieth-century wedding gift

concepts were wonderful for people who’d been living with their parents until their wedding night and lacked housewares and appliances—which applies to fewer and fewer couples these days—but the custom of showering couples with treats as part of a wedding celebration remains strong.

Creating a registry helps your loved ones do that, so enjoy the process. Get creative together about what you’ll both enjoy. Find a registry site that allows maximum variety in sourcing, and think about the gaps in your cookware and gadget world, your decor, your library and music collection, your garden, home improvement, sport, or camping setup. Hit a wide range of price points.

Register for more items than you have guests invited, so people will have plenty of choices. Consider offering a charitable donation option or two.

It may be that the most wonderful thing your loved ones could do for you at this life-altering moment is to kick in toward a home improvement, down payment, or other shared journey of your dreams. Etiquette purists may sniff, but ought to remember that there are cultures in which it’s still good manners to slip the bride cash, Macy’s best efforts notwithstanding. And that the entire intent of a wedding gift is to bless your union and

future in a loving, meaningful way.

Don’t include your registry information or alternative plan on invitations, but do put it on your wedding website, and make sure word gets around via friends and family.

Do say thank you, by hand, on paper, by snail mail, within a couple of months. Let them know how much it meant to be celebrated, and keep right on taking joy in it together.

picking your wedding “ favor ” ites

Send your loved ones home with items they will actually use and love.

Wedding favors have evolved. No longer must we order monogrammed photo frames or miniature mugs. Send your loved ones home with items they will actually use and love, not “cute” stuff destined to gather dust in a drawer, occupying that uncomfortable zone of “mostly useless but hard to

toss out.” You can easily get pretty, monogrammed tags to attach to favors, or gift bags to contain them — and find a cool piece of vintage furniture or dress a pretty table and let guests choose from one or more of the following to give the tradition a fresh feel:

Wedding favors have evolved from monogrammed frames or mini-mugs.

EDIBLE FAVORS are great. Cookies, individual loaves of tasty bread, small bottles of hot sauce, bitters or exotic oils, or tiny pots of honey or maple syrup will be welcomed. Specially labeled chocolate bars, or jars of colorful jellybeans… the possibilities are endless.

SMALL ART PRINTS like botanical or wildlife drawings can stand alone or be put on a card with a few words about your wedding or your relationship to the guest inside. You can also commission an artist to make you miniature watercolors or oils, each one unique but sharing a similar theme.

SEED PACKETS in small net bags. How about seeds from your signature wedding flower, if you’ve used one? Wildflower seeds? It’s hard to imagine a more perfect reminder of growth and new beginnings. Or how about a small potted succulent or cactus?

AROMATHERAPY OILS or incense bundles—choose scents that connote purification and good luck.

SCENTED CANDLES will shed the light of your love in their homes.

SMALL VASES OR FANCY BOTTLES. Deputize someone to deconstruct a centerpiece or two and put a bloom in each.

FANS OR PARASOLS have practical benefits, and make fun photo props too.

KEYCHAINS or pens are thoughtful items—everyone needs these at one point or another.

CDs featuring highlights of your wedding playlist.

CUTE CONTAINERS made of tin or china can hold candy or potpourri, and be re-purposed for other uses.

TOYS, too: If you’re including kids at your wedding, it’s thoughtful to give them kid-centric favors: small toys and games or coloring supplies will help them break the ice and pass the time.

Find a cool piece of vintage furniture or dress a pretty table and let guests choose from a selection of favors.
