Go you’re making a list? Finding just the right gift for each beloved soul is a wonderful feeling. Trying to think of just what might be perfect and then locating the item can be challenging. We’re here to help! Happily, you’re in a place
where beauty, practicality, and heartfelt creativity are a way of life, and variety isn’t just a spice, it’s a major ingredient. Think about your friends and family and what delights them, then refer to this handy list of possibilities that are easy to find.

Within each category of item, you’ll find all sorts of flavors, way more than we’ve got space to include. This is a highly competitive retail market—after all, we’re adjacent to one of the world’s finest and largest centers of buying, selling, and making, and a whole lot of inspired talent has traveled upstream over many decades and successive waves of migration. Then, too, this is inspiring territory in its own right. Our glorious river, our rolling fields, and our heart-lifting mountainscapes draw in the talented and practiced souls who produce and share fine things. This is where entrepreneurs make their dreams reality, and the cream has been rising to the top for a long time.
Local shopping quests include a free gift for the giver: the local shopkeepers and fun-providers you’ll meet in the process are lovely and very glad to meet you. Just looking at the possibilities out there is a soul-nourishing adventure, and you’ll undoubtedly discover things that can enhance your personal world as well.
And shopping local is a gift to us all. Every dollar that stays local is multiplied four times, compared to a dollar spent at a big chain. Your contribution to the local economy helps everyone thrive and keeps the open spaces open and the marketplaces humming.
So go out, meet the folks, and end the day with a bite and a beverage someplace wonderful—no matter where you find yourself, you’re never far from options in that department.
Use this page as a shopping list, and to note down what you ultimately find and where. Have fun and remember to shop local.

It’s hard to imagine anything more authentically Hudson Valley than the wares at Hammertown. These home and lifestyle goods beckon but never shout. They’re cozy without being kitschy, soothing with pops of subtle color; things that feel good in your hand, soothing to your mind, and refreshing to your spirit. Hammertown’s products play well together, radiating peace and welcome like a house party with a perfectly curated guest list.
It only makes sense, then, that Hammertown is an organically grown family endeavor. Joan Osofsky, a teacher who’d moved with her family from the Jersey suburbs in the early ’80s, was living on Hammertown Road in Pine Plains and relishing the process of getting her home just the way she liked it with the good things she discovered while exploring the beautiful countryside— stoneware pottery, earth tones in richly textured fabrics, subtle vintage beauty. Home design

was a passion for Joan that became a whole new calling. It was only natural that, seeking a fresh professional path, she would open a country store in the unused barn behind her house, pouring her talent and soul into curating a collection that could be shared with the wider world, things sourced from everywhere from the estate sale in the next town to the French and English countrysides.
She’d never gone to school for it, but Osofsky’s unerring eye for loveliness drew in loads of folks who snapped up the handcrafted items she’d discovered and began creating their own Hammertown homes. Old, new, bright, neutral, American, imported: all the wares were brilliantly curated to play nicely together in almost any space, yet varied enough that
every shopper could incorporate them into an original vision. The Barn hosted crafts classes taught by Joan and her favorite local makers. The Hammertown look—clean and fresh, with a nod to the past and artfully layered textures, nothing fake or fussy— was a hit. The barn magnetized nest-makers from across the neighborhood and region, setting a new standard for tasteful décor and becoming a beloved outing destination for solo explorers and groups of friends alike.
Fifteen years after opening the Barn, she opened Hammertown Rhinebeck in a vacant spot beside the then-new Oblong Books; a year later, she opened yet another Hammertown in Great Barrington. The stores were

warmly embraced by both neighborhoods, helping the increasing numbers of people coming to create their homes in the Hudson Valley and Berkshires to build lives rich in comfort, charm, and the warmth of community.
Osofsky’s design sense became so recognized that she authored two books on Hudson Valley style and entertainment, Love Where You Live: At Home in the Country and Entertaining in the Country. Her children grew up with the business; daughter Dana Simpson began going along on buying trips in high school, later developing Hammertown’s interi -
or design services and stepping up to become Hammertown’s president when Joan retired a couple of years ago. Dana blends the gifts she’s inherited with her own discerning eye, upholding the Hammertown “high/low” signature blend with grace. “You should feel instantly relaxed and calm when you walk in the door to your home, regardless of its size or location. Ready to revive and recharge,” she said in an interview early this year.

At Hammertown, you’ll find both in-stock furniture and made-toorder choices, along with décor items to refresh any room. And

There are fluffy Australian and Icelandic sheepskins, brass candlesticks, clever kitchen tools, hand-stitched coverlets, sumptuous towels, and soothing soaps—something to enhance every room.
whether you’re doing over a room, a whole house, or just looking for that one perfect item, you’ll likely find satisfaction and inspiration. New in the store are Hammertown’s own line of pillows and scented candles. Brands you’ll find include Cisco Home, Lee Industries, Rowe, Younger & Co., Ethnicraft, and Gus* Modern. Hammertown Interior Design Services are thoughtfully organized
to make your project painless, successful, and thoroughly yours, offering personalized, down-to-earth guidance through in-person and virtual consultations, using mood boards and floor plans to help you discover what will bring you the most delight every time you’re in your space, and providing full-service logistics for removal and delivery. There’s a Hammertown Trade Program offering fellow design industry entrepreneurs even more choices: designer pricing and hundreds of customization options, including COM (Customer’s Own Material) opportunities. Not sure what your discerning

loved one would be most thrilled to find under the holiday tree?
Stop in at any Hammertown location. There’s an unspoken message implied by a Hammertown gift: you know that they love the finer things in life—the truly finer things, practical and made to
last, subtly chic without a trace of ostentation. So find them something from Hammertown or get them a gift card that will let them explore, do their own curation, and have the complete Hammertown experience, a gift that truly speaks for itself.

savor the season : hudson valley winter dining guide

There’s nothing quite as heartening in winter as a truly great meal, especially a truly great meal cooked with expertise and served with care. At restaurants here in our Realm, you’ll find this and more: crackling fireplaces casting warm light over beautifully appointed rooms, the glow of candlelight setting a mellow mood, splendid soups that will warm you down to your toes, decadent desserts that stroke your senses just right. (Remember, calories are heat energy, and you need some heat energy this time of year. It’s a basic human right.)
Food culture is, as you probably know, passionately practiced here. Farmers grow in high tunnels to produce freshness 365 days a year. Chefs know
where to find the best of the best, and how to season it to perfection. Got a case of cabin fever? Want to make your visit here exquisitely memorable? Dine out.
We’re giving you a list of our favorites, complete with a highlight from each menu. In the Hudson Valley and Catskills, you’re never far from a culinary experience that will absolutely hit the spot. Fresh ingredients, veggie choices, and sweet service are par for the course; aside from these options, don’t forget to ask about daily specials. Understand that menus can change frequently, but should any of these specific dishes be unavailable, you can count on these places to be cooking up something just as tasty.

chef ' s favorite winter dish : at garvan ' s , new P altz
Executive Chef Kevin
Alston says he knew within five minutes of meeting Garvan McCloskey that it was where he was meant to be. Garvan’s Gastropub was the perfect fit.
“I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to change jobs, but this just clicked so well,” he says. “I have full control over the kitchen. We just keep to a simple model, making everything from scratch and cooking from the heart.”
Garvan’s is just a mile from Main Street, but it’s tucked down a long driveway off a side road, in a mid-18th-century house. Going there has the feel of discovering a secret world, distinct from Main Street’s college town vibe but without the least trace of pretense. “We like to make it an experience,” Alston says. “It’s like being welcomed into some -
one’s home. And I maintain that with the flavors. My motto is to cook what people love and cook it from my whole soul. There’s a good bit of ego in this business; a lot of chefs like to show off, and it’s their way or the highway. That’s just not me. I love getting feedback, and my goal is to please you.”
Despite Irish ownership and a distinct Irish warmth, the menu at Garvan’s isn’t restricted to one particular cuisine. “Our hospitality is Irish, and we do have some homey Irish comfort food dishes on the menu,”
Alston says, “but we’ve also got some Asian choices, like the Thai shrimp and Bahn Mi (sesame garlic short rib served with kimchi aioli) for lunch, or red snapper with a ginger soy butter sauce. We have some classical French dishes; scallops over risotto is one of our top sellers.

“I love cooking fall and winter food,” Alston says. “It’s my favorite time of year, all about braising and stews.”
– Chef Kevin Alston
And then we have some classic American options, like the braised short ribs that are our main claim to fame. We make our own veal demi-glace, which a lot of places no longer do—it’s a natural reduction of meat stock that’s cooked down for seven or eight hours till it’s almost gelatinous, with a lovely sheen and a deep, intense flavor.” There are also vegetarian options, like the shepherdess pie and grilled cheese made with fig jam, Brie, arugula, and Granny Smith apples.
Alston says the creativity and scope give him a freedom to express himself that he’s never had before. “I’ve worked in places
where there are different visions challenging each other; this is the one true place where I’ve been allowed to just come in and actually express myself fully in the kitchen.”
That self-expression wins rave reviews. People say it’s homey, hearty, and all-around delicious, with excellent service, fine whiskey, and a subtly electric vibe. And this is the perfect time of year to give it a try. “I love cooking fall and winter food,” Alston says. “It’s my favorite time of year, all about braising and stews.”

Want to try re-creating some of Chef Kevin’s winter magic at home? Have a go at his lamb stew.

garvan ' s guinness lamb stew
A hearty mix of flavor and comfort.
Serves 6-8 Prep: 30 min Cook: 60-90 min
• 5 lbs lamb leg meat
• 2-1/2 lbs carrots, diced
• 2-1/2 lbs celery, diced
• 2-1/2 lbs onions , diced
ingredients
• 2-1/2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or red), cut in half or quartered
• 4-5 garlic cloves, chopped
• 1 quart beef stock
• 1 cup chicken stock
• 2 cups Guinness
• 1/2 lb roux (combine equal parts fat and flour)
• 1/2 oz thyme, chopped
• 1/2 oz rosemary, chopped
• 1-2 cups flour
• 2 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
• 1/2 cup peas
directions
1. Clean lamb leg, removing fat and silver skin. Cut meat into 1/2inch cubes.
2. Lightly coat lamb cubes with flour and season with salt and pepper.
3. Add oil to pot. When almost smoking, start searing lamb cubes; do it in small batches to ensure you are getting even browning.
4. Cover the lamb with the beef and chicken stock and braise in a 350 °F oven for about 1 hour or until tender.
5. Dice onions, carrots, and celery into large chunks and halve or quarter potatoes into medium-size cubes.
6. Remove the lamb from the stock, reserving the stock for later.
7. In another pot, heat 1 tbsp oil. When hot, add carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Lightly brown.
8. Deglaze with Guinness. Simmer for 1-2 minutes.
Add reserved stock, mix in roux thoroughly, and add potatoes.
9. Cover and simmer on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are fork tender (about 90 minutes).
10. Add lamb meat, herbs, and peas, and serve.*
Pair with your favorite dry red wine, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon, or with a nice pint of Guinness.
*Stew is even better the next day, as the flavors have a chance to blend.

Local Eatery
Got the winter blahs? Picture yourself snug and cozy, surrounded by leafy greenery and beautiful views, sipping beer, wine, or cider, and then digging into a fresh, expertly prepared locavore meal. Then head to Benton and make your dream come true.
When the creators of Full Circle wanted a relaxing, enchanting eatery to be part of Gardiner’s multifaceted community hub, they knew whom to ask: Greg and Melissa Gagne, owners of the beloved Grazery at the Water Street Market in New Paltz, whose cooking and
hospitality had built the Red Rooster Cafe into a Gardiner cornerstone before the couple took some time off to focus on their kids.
“Mike Benevento came into Grazery and asked me if we’d be interested in creating something for Full Circle, and I loved the idea,” Gagne says. “I’ve always wanted to combine a bar with a greenhouse, and this was the perfect opportunity.” Benevento agreed. They’d wanted a greenhouse anyway; a greenhouse in which one could sit down and have a beer would be just the thing.

“I’ve always wanted to combine a bar with a greenhouse, and this was the perfect opportunity.”
– Co-owner Greg Gagne
Open since February of 2025, Benton serves up fresh local comfort food and casually wonderful drinks in a welcoming, laid-back setting. The lush, fragrant greenhouse is the perfect antidote to the winter blahs—the perfect solution when you’re craving an outdoor meal, but the weather isn’t cooperating. “We have a woodstove, so it’s this warm, cozy heat. And being in there amid the greenery when the snow is falling, having a beer and a hot meal, is pure magic,” Gagne says. “It’s a great place to be after a day in the mountains, on a Sunday night with the kids when you don’t feel like cooking, or for a Friday night drink after work.”
Eight barstools offer another hangout option in the rustic kitchen building, where you can order from the simply
delicious menu, and there’s patio seating for nice days. Burgers made with fresh grass-fed beef from Kilcoyne Farms, hand-cut fries, and authentic, perfectly seasoned poutine, in generous portions, are the perfect complement to the warm welcome. “Food was awesome. Portions are huge. Staff was lovely,” writes a local guide on Google.
It’s a natural fit for the Gagnes, Gardiner residents with life-long food and hospitality experience (Melissa attended the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, and both have worked in the industry in a large variety of settings), and a deep love of people and community. “It’s a small space, so there’s no table service,” Gagne says. “You order inside, you get a buzzer, you hang out, you pick up your food at the window.
We are very helpful and accommodating, but we’re not at your table asking you if you want another drink. You can just kick back and come get that when you’re ready.”
Full Circle is a unique facility, envisioned by its creators as offering “a break from the hustle,” and the Gagnes couldn’t be happier to be in the mix. “There’s a top-notch bakery and cafe, and an event space, the Living Room, where all kinds of things happen,” Gagne says. “It could be yoga in the morning, an educational event in the afternoon, a dance party in the evening, and somebody’s milestone gathering the next day; it’s whatever people want it to be, which is beautiful. Then too, Hudson Valley Trailworks has their headquarters
there; they build trails all over the place, and it’s a great vibe having them for neighbors. There’s a lot for families to explore—natural playgrounds, a little pickleball court, walking trails all around the property, a pump track for bikes and scooters.”
It’s all based on building community, a perfect fit for the Benton business model. “It’s a very collective atmosphere,” Gagne says. “Everyone shares the work; everyone shares the tips. Everyone shares everything. If there’s something we want to do in the kitchen, it goes on the board, and we can mess around and figure out what works best for everyone and how it’s going to work. So it is a very collaborative, close-knit group that works really well together.”

Bouncing back and forth between New Paltz (the Grazery’s combination of plants, fine cheese, and community goodness is still a huge hit within Water Street Market) and Gardiner, Gagne says life just keeps getting better. “We’re lucky enough to be working with a great group of people at both places, so it allows us a little more flexibility. We don’t necessarily have to keep rigid schedules; we just kind of do what needs to be done.”
When they sold Red Rooster to Café
Mio to devote more time to family, the Gagnes knew they were making the most precious investment they possibly could, and it’s working out beautifully at this point. “Our kids, the older ones, work at both places. Their friends work at Benton. Our 18-year-old daughter started a group of students at Water Street Market for when we do parties; they do all types of kids’ activities and stuff. So they’re pretty in tune and connected, and know that they can be a part of the community and work and help. It’s nice.”

Rediscover the magic of winter at Mohonk Preserve. Embrace the season with brisk hikes, crosscountry skiing and showshoeing across scenic trails. Whether you’re chasing adventure or quiet moments in nature, the Preserve has something for everyone.
Plan your winter adventure today! Visit mohonkpreserve.org or scan:

Grandmas used to tell the kids, while zipping their coats up snug, that the chilly air would “put roses in your cheeks.” That it does, and a whole lot more. Good times outdoors in the colder months will boost your mood, power up your immune system, and help you sleep better at night, not to mention burning off lots of calories and keeping your cardiovascular system in tip-top shape.
Think outside the box. Plan a winter outing that leads to a waterfall; until you’ve seen a frozen waterfall, you haven’t truly lived. Bring binoculars for winter birding—birds are easy to spot without leaves in the way. You can go sledding or tobogganing at just about any public park that has a hill. All you need is something slippery to sit on, and you’ll get plenty of
good exercise dragging it back up.
So get on out there, folks! Once you’re out there and moving around in the magical winter wonderland you’ll be really glad you ventured out. Even without snow on the ground, this season has its own subtle color palette that’s glorious when you take the time to look at it. Especially as our wonderful Realm is packed with opportunities for wintertime fun.
To stay comfy and get the most out of your experience, you’ll need the right apparel and equipment—lightweight, warm layers, a day pack, and suitable gear for whatever sport you prefer to try. Visit one of our expert outfitters, and they’ll make sure you have exactly what you need.
These winter activities offer a great low-impact, full-body workout that can get you to serene and beautiful spots that are otherwise impossible to reach when the ground’s covered in white. Snowshoes or microspikes are less costly and easier to manage than cross-country skis. Plan to cover about half as much ground as you’d expect to on a warm-weather hike, especially if you’re breaking fresh trail; pack your water bottle and enjoy the uncrowded trails and sugar-frosted views.

Wellness
Winter can be challenging. Sure, some of us thrive on it: the crisp, refreshing breeze; the beauty of snowscapes; the ability to slide and glide on slick surfaces that offers whole new ways to play. On the other hand, those crisp breezes can dry your skin and hair to Sahara Desert levels.
Those snowscapes aren’t quite as entertaining when you need to get somewhere and your car is a silent mound of heavy, wet white stuff. And sliding and gliding is only fun when you do it on purpose, not when you’re simply
trying to make it to the mailbox.
Do yourself a favor and be prepared. Have a good snow brush and ice scraper for the car and a nice lightweight shovel. Keep these, along with a pair of insulated gloves and a warm hat, just inside the front door. There’s nothing quite like realizing that your snow-removal gear is right where you left it last night, in the back seat of that silent mound of heavy, wet white stuff.
Make sure you’ve got good lighting to keep the early nightfall at bay, and a cozy nest for relaxation,

with a soft blanket or throw and a handy surface for your snacks and books (or your crochet project or whatever helps you pass the time indoors and still feel productive and content).
Have the right gear for the weather, even if you’re not the winter sports type. Being comfortable when you’re out taking care of business is
key, and there are days when even a quick walk down the block and back can save your sanity.
And go a little deeper into selfcare. In the Hudson Valley, resources abound that can help you feel your best when the frigid winds blow and make even February (how does the shortest month of the year feel so eternal?) tolerable.
salt caves
Salt has natural disinfectant properties, and the ancient belief that it has a healing effect got a boost in the 1800s when doctors realized that salt miners weren’t experiencing the lung issues that other miners did and were actually thriving. There haven’t been a ton of clinical studies, but a great many people say they can feel the difference after spending some time in intensely salty spaces.
Potential benefits of salt therapy, also called halotherapy, include better breathing: salty air will thin the mucus in your lungs. It may also help fight infections. Surely you’ve heard that gargling with salt water or a saline nasal rinse can help stop a cold in its tracks. Many people find that time in a salt cave improves their skin texture and melts away anxiety, stress, and exhaustion.

All over the world, since ancient times, a good sound bath has been recognized for its healing properties. Sound is vibration, and the right sounds reach into the cellular level. Research backs this up: sound baths can slow down those busy brain waves, leaving you deeply relaxed and refreshed.
That has powerful positive effects on your entire body and being, meaning that a good sound bath can relieve stress, anxiety, and depression, It’s also got a reputation for helping ease fatigue, improve cognition and memory, and soothe chronic pain. A sound bath is a terrific way to decompress. massage
Therapeutic touch is another healing modality with a long and honorable pedigree. There’s nothing like it for relieving the muscle aches that can come from feeling chilly, sitting too long, or taking a tumble on a slick spot. A skilled massage therapist can find those achy places and melt them for you, leaving you refreshed and pain free.
Research backs this one all the way up: a good massage improves circulation, enhances your immune system, and leads to better mood, better sleep (which helps everything!), and reduced stress.
A float session quite literally takes the pressure off—all the pressure. It’ll lower your blood pressure, relieve your aches and pains, and make your burnout history. It’s known to have therapeutic effects on everything from chronic muscle aches to body dysmorphia.
Floating, which happens in a tub of silky-smooth Epsom salt water inside a sensory deprivation chamber, is also one of the safest possible ways to achieve an altered state of consciousness. Some people swear by it—not just to relieve the negatives, like anxiety and depression—but to enhance creativity and productivity.

Yoga is the exercise that keeps on giving. It will leave you stronger and more flexible, with better balance and posture. It’s also great for your heart, improving your circulation and cholesterol, All of that boosts your immunity to any nasty little bugs that might be floating around out there. The mindful breathing that comes with yoga practice is great for your nervous system, chasing away stress, anxiety, and the winter blues.
Don’t worry about being an absolute beginner. Everyone is at some point! Our yoga teachers are experts in helping you to feel comfortable and welcome. Some even offer online sessions, so you can keep it up even when the weather is doing its worst. But we highly recommend in-person classes for the warm, friendly communal vibes that are served as a side dish and offer their own therapeutic benefits.

Nearly every medicine we have began as a botanical one; people were chewing willow bark for aches and pains long before aspirin was a thing, and that’s just one example. An herbal apothecary will offer you the opportunity to get treatments that are more closely connected to the source and may be less harsh than prescription or over-the-counter remedies.
A good herbal apothecary (and we’ve got some great ones around here!) is where you’ll find wise practitioners who truly care about what ails you and can offer you the right relief. They’ll help you find the right plants at the right doses, avoiding problems (herbal remedies can be potent, and it’s important to know what you’re doing) and offering authentic healing that’s much more than skin deep (although if your skin is the problem, they’ve got just the thing, and a deeper understanding of the underlying issues than you’ll ever find at Bog Box Pharma.)
Ancient civilizations believed that crystals had specific healing properties, and though the research has been scant, many people swear by their positive benefits. At the very least, the right crystal can provide a great focal point for mindfulness meditation.
Crystals hold energy, and we’re made up of energy, so it seems silly to deny there could be a positive result. Try it for yourself and see. Go to a rock shop and see what pretty stone may be begging you to pick it up and bring it home. Many are undeniably beautiful, and there’s no such thing as having too much beauty in your life, especially when the chilly winds are blowing. And at one of our favorite crystal shops, you can even try out infrared mats and energy healing devices. People who love it say their chakras have never felt better.

Meet the Owner
Ed Ullmann has had a great many memorable experiences in his career as a Catskills pharmacist, but the man with the nasty cat bite was one of the scarier ones. “This gentleman hated the medical system; I don’t think I’ve ever filled a prescription for him,” he says. “He came in and said, ‘Somebody told me I should come and see you. I’ve got this cat bite.’”
Cat bites are notoriously prone to infection, and Ullmann urged the 72-year-old to go to the emergency room or
to urgent care. “He absolutely refused, so I was faced with a moment of truth,” he says. “Either this guy was going to go home and do nothing, or I needed to intervene.”
Ullmann ascertained that the bite was infected, but that the infection had not yet spread, and advised the man to clean the wound, apply antiseptic, soak his hand in Epsom salts, and then apply a drawing ointment. He also recommended colloidal silver to fight the infection and elderberry elixir

to boost immunity, and was able to contact the man’s primary care provider and get him a prescription for an antibiotic, which he took alongside the elderberry and topical silver. In a little less than three weeks, there were signs of healing; in seven weeks, the man’s hand was fully healed.
“There’s a gray area in pharmacy when we have people come in with emergent issues, and it’s only going to get more common as the health care system lets people down,” Ullmann says.
“The people I see out here in the Catskills aren’t uneducated folks;
they’ve just had bad experiences with the healthcare system. I had a man who had both diabetes and COPD; he had constant upper-respiratory issues and he’d end up going to the hospital, where they’d have to decide whether to address his sugar first or give him antibiotics, which raise sugar levels. He had some awful experiences and said, ‘That’s it; I’m done. I’m not going to the hospital anymore.’ But we were able to treat him with colloidal silver, which was commonly used as an antibiotic before the development of penicillin. He called me in three days and told me the pneumonia was
gone; I told him to keep taking the silver for five more days, and that was another success story. That’s the magic of pharmacy; I’ve had some really good experiences. Meanwhile, people coming in asking for advice is up by probably 100 percent, as access to primary care tightens up and people wait three or four months to get an appointment, or have a bad experience with an urgent care facility.”
In a lifetime of science, Ullmann has seen corporate healthcare from the inside out—he spent sixteen years as an HMO founder and CEO with Wellcare, and was a National HMO Fellow at George-
town Medical School in Washington, DC. He’s developed 30 startups and was named 1994 Health Care Entrepreneur of the Year in Southern New England by Inc. Magazine. He’s also been a pharmacy district manager, served as Ulster County’s Mental Health Director and as a county legislator, and owned and operated the world-renowned Warm Mineral Springs in Florida.
Over the past couple of decades, Ullmann’s study of natural and herbal remedies has convinced him that despite the triumphs of modern medicine, there’s a very important place for simpler, older

remedies. “I’ve traveled to a lot of parts of the world, sometimes with my late wife and sometimes alone,” he says, “and what I came away with was, I learned I really didn’t know anything. When you study other cultures and you’re coming from the American mindset that we have superior health care—which, by the way, costs us twice as much as it does anywhere else—you can be blinded by that preconception. You go through years of schooling, you go out and work in the real world, and then you experience other cultures, and you’re shocked. You realize that most of them look at natural therapies first, and at pharmaceutical drugs only after that. We’re at the other extreme. We don’t even regulate natural products, in contrast to a place like Germany, where natural products have to be certified, outcome data is required, and nobody is allowed to own more than six pharmacies. No
chain pharmacies over there.
“Traveling, I discovered that people around the world do things differently than the United States, and we can learn from them, and they can learn from us. But we don’t have a medical system that thinks that way and looks to the world for best practices. We have a system that thinks we’re superior.”
Ullmann opened his first Wellness Rx in Tannersville in 2015, on the invitation of members of the nonprofit Hunter Foundation who wanted the town to have its own pharmacy, and relocated to Phoenicia, his home town, to open his current location in 2023. The launch was challenging, to say the least; he became a widower and the proprietor of Pharmacy For The Public Good DBA Wellness Rx, the first not-for-profit community pharmacy in the United

States, at just about the same time. The store integrates traditional pharmacy services and wellness checks with house-made products, natural healing, immunizations, consultations, custom blending, and much more.
The job calls upon all the skills in his tool kit, from the things he learned in his corporate era—he spent some time as Pharmacy District Manager of 37 Hudson Valley Rite Aid stores at one point, to see what he could learn—to the natural wisdom he absorbed in other countries and the teaching skills he’s honed as an Adjunct Experiential Faculty Member at the Albany College of Pharmacy, where he serves on
the President’s Advisory Council.
On the front lines of rural health care, he never knows what might be coming next: a paranoid schizophrenic who’s incapable of leaving his home to get the prescriptions he needs (the man has been gently coaxed into coming out to pick them up), a rash that’s probably shingles (Burow’s solution and a custom homeopathic salve led to excellent results), or a browsing shopper whose blood pressure turns out to be 200/100 (calmly advised to head to the doctor).
The store is beautiful, which Ullmann considers an important ingredient in the compound prescription that is Wellness Rx.
“I’ve never met a pharmacist who

wouldn’t prefer to work in the kind of environment we’ve created here,” he says. “We have an art gallery—I’m an artist myself— and aquariums. Congressman [Antonio] Delgado visited my Tannersville store right before he became lieutenant governor, and the first thing he said was that it smelled absolutely wonderful.
State Senator Michelle Hinchey’s been a huge supporter; she was the keynote speaker at our groundbreaking ceremony. I realize there are never guarantees in life, but I truly believe we’ll find a large family trust, maybe through the Gates Foundation or something within the healthcare system, and that will give us what we need to build out a corporate team and replicate this model. It’s desperately needed. And if you can’t build something like this in Ulster County, I don’t know where you can.”
Ullmann keeps his eyes on the prize. The entire endeavor is dedicated to his wife; the memory of her love informs every move. His staff are people surviving health challenges of their own. And he never tires of the people and the in-kind exchanges.
“I have joyful moments every day,” he says. “Just today, my aquarium person—he’s a nurse, and his hobbies are cooking and aquariums, and I’d killed my fish because I know nothing about aquariums. So he said, ‘You be the pharmacist; I’ll take care of the fish,’ so he keeps the fish healthy, and it’s beautiful now, and he brought me a beautiful tomato-cucumber salad today. Another person does my gardens in exchange for what they need. Last Thursday I had a woman knocking at the door before I was even open—that’s a sign of panic or something like it—and

I bring her in. She’s shaking. She tells me her son has a staph infection and she lost the measuring cup and can’t give him his medication. I go, ‘Well, we got that covered; I can fix that for you no problem,’ and I look at the elevenyear-old and he’s been feeding off her panic, right? Of course. So I think, what’s needed to come out of this? Let’s get this kid feeling joyful, that’ll help mom too.
“‘This is your lucky time!’ I told him. ‘I haven’t fed my fish yet. Look at them jumping, waiting for their food.’ And they were, they were jumping all over the place. So he’s watching me feed them, and they calm down, and I say ‘OK, now you can say hi to the fish. They’re calmer. I get him his honey stick—every kid gets a honey stick—and here you have it: a kid who’s now having a wonderful morning. Then I got Mom the measuring cup. ‘No charge,’ I told her. ‘This one’s on us.’”

Since 1997, Rondout Valley residents have been keeping their furry family members healthy and happy with help from Rondout Valley Veterinary Associates, and finding comfort, compassion, and skill. “The vets, technicians, assistants, and entire staff are incredible!” writes a reviewer on Google. “They have seen us through many issues big and small and always with such kindness, dedication and follow-through. We are so lucky to have them!”
Dr. Kathleen Laux bought the practice from its founder, Dr. Eric Hartelius, a Rondout Valley High School graduate, who set the bar high. Dr. Laux wanted to continue the tradition and made it her mission to provide top-quality pet medicine practiced with compassion for everyone involved. Dr. Hartelius still practices there, as well as two additional skilled veterinarians, Dr. Troy Hexter and Dr. Jesse Page, supported by experienced practice managers and a team of five licensed veterinary technicians.

Dr. Laux isn’t a new face; she’s been working there for over a decade. Winter is nesting time. Even if you’re wild about winter sports, you’ll still want someplace cozy where you can strip off your outer layers and rest up between outings. Between the short days and chilly breezes, the majority of us spend more time inside this time of year than we do during the other three seasons.
The difference between coziness and cabin fever can lie in having that inside space set up as a haven where you can nurture yourself, where you feel satisfaction and serenity. You’re obviously the only one
who knows exactly what that means for you, and it works best if you pay attention to your own instincts and make your space uniquely yours. Don’t forget a functional, good-looking coatrack or hall tree and a nice absorbent doormat where you can shed your ice-encrusted gear and let it dry.
Pay attention to those moments when the thought, “Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a…” even if the thought is fleeting. Make notes. Look around the Internet for examples of whatever that particular thing may be; our advertisers’ websites are a great place to start, because you can follow up in person. You’re

Here too, if your walls need a refresh, pick out a major piece you love first. It’ll set a tone. Things don’t necessarily need to match, mind you, but once you start creating the vibe you want, you’ll know if a smaller item fits in or fights with it. Look for art or sculpture that draws your eye, that you can gaze at and into with pleasure. Masterful artists (and we do have plenty of those around here) know how to create a feeling of depth even on a canvas. lighting

You’ll want a cozy throw near at hand. Will yours be nubbly wool, quilted and puffy, velvety? Consider seeking out the perfect pillows to go with it—with more than one, you can recline in all sorts of ways. Beyond that, are you overdue for a bedroom-transforming comforter or duvet cover, or a new set of fluffy towels? A woven wall hanging can also do wonders for a space, either as a focal point or a complement to your major artwork. And don’t forget the possibilities for window treatments. Pretty thermal curtains can save on heating bills in the dark of the evening and frame the beautiful outdoors for you when the sun is high.
There are so many joys to having good pottery or stoneware in your life, starting with solid cups, bowls, and plates that will keep food and drink nice and toasty and feel good in your hand. Beautiful candle holders, vases for dried arrangements, pots for live plants (do treat yourself to something living and green!), incense burners and potpourri holders, coasters…the right ceramic pieces add warmth and dimension to any space.

If you’ve relocated to the Catskills, full or part time, and moved into one of the nifty, quirky older homes that fill these hills along the creeks and byways, you may find yourself dreaming of what it could be like with the right kind of TLC applied. But you don’t want it to lose its character in the process. You want updates that are really you, a home that lifts your heart when you wake up there in the morning or return after some time away—a place that’s both beautiful and easy to care for and live in. You need an Artisan’s Touch.
Isabel Salinas was toddling around holding tools for her dad as a small child in Argentina, where remodeling and building was the family trade. As she grew, he trusted her with more and more complicated tasks, and it wasn’t long before she realized that she’d inherited the knack for envisioning, then creating, great beauty. She could look at an old, dusty surface and see, in her mind’s eye, what it could become. Bringing her talent to the United States, she set up shop in New Jer-

sey and served clients in the metro area, combining her knack for furniture restoration with an eye for interior design and a collaborative approach that keeps the client’s sense of beauty front and center. Salinas never forgets that you’re the one who’s going to be living with the results, never lets trends or fads get in the way of taste and functional elegance, and finds creative ways to work within your budget to achieve gorgeous, lasting results. And now she’s established an Arkville outpost, taking over the former Catskill Kitchens and reinventing the business with flair and dedication.
“I have had my kitchen cabinets updated and painted by Artisan’s Touch and I was so happy with the job they did, I recently had them update my
bathroom,” writes a client in a fivestar review. “Isabel has great ideas that I would have never thought of and the attention to details was exceptional. Can’t wait to start my next job with them! My home is slowly coming back to life!”
Find yourself something at a barn sale that’s got great bones but needs a lot of love to be beautiful again? Salinas won’t just fix it; she’ll restore it to the original creator’s vision and beyond. Her skills include upholstery and refinishing. Upholstery, she points out on the Artisan’s Touch website, comes from the Middle English word upholder, which referred to a craftsperson who could make furniture comfortable and sturdy; over time, it came to include finish and beauty. for getting it right, layer by layer, and that’s the approach Salinas will apply to every detail of your work, whether it’s a single antique piece or a wholehome redesign or restoration job.
Using a wide-ranging set of techniques and materials, from time-honored lacquers and varnishes to digital printing, she’ll re-create the surfaces of your space to make it feel brand new and fresh, yet so authentic you can practically feel the spirits of earlier inhabitants smiling and nodding in satisfaction. She knows how to find you just the right piece for the right spot, how to help choose wallpaper and install it flawlessly, and how to help you make decisions that comple-

Interior design and re-creation is about being a great listener with expert hands, and combining those traits is her life’s work. Having surroundings that bring joy is, she believes, key to contentment, and combining functionality and beauty shouldn’t be something reserved for the wealthy.

And what’s more rewarding than doing it in a green and sustainable way? Restoring, repurposing, and facelifting are all environmentally positive ways to showcase the uniqueness that is in you, and I would like to be the artistic hands that guide the experience."

Here in the Hudson Valley, we’re fond of lots of things. Good food. Nature. Art. Kindness. Education. Standards are pretty high, by and large, which means that people doing business the right way—good things, well and honestly delivered—tend to rise to the top, whether you’re talking about restaurants, hardware stores, or anything else. So it’s only natural that this is where you’ll find the best car makes being sold by one of the best-run dealerships. Exhibit A: Curry Subaru in Kingston.
People who drive Subarus will tell you there’s no better car on snowy roads. Symmetrical all-wheel drive, they say, is
a whole different experience, especially when it’s combined with the X-MODE feature that optimizes traction and momentum at low speeds, the high ground clearance, and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.
If, despite all that, a driver winds up in trouble, it’s comforting to be behind the wheel of a vehicle that has consistent five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Top Safety Pick awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Then there’s the fact that a well-maintained Subaru is often still roadworthy

well past 200,000 miles. Yes, Subaru fans tend to be a loyal bunch, and they have their reasons.
All of it makes Subaru a natural fit with a dealership family that’s still going strong after 106 years, winning its own array of accolades and awards. B.F. Curry opened Curry Chevrolet in New York City back in 1919, when horse-drawn wagons were still a common sight on city streets. Chevy was in second place—Fords were still the most popular car in the country—but still sold 150,000 cars that year. Curry’s Sales and Service division was soon one of the largest in the world.
B.F. had an eye for a good oppor-
tunity and began supplying fleet vehicles to state and city highway departments, putting Curry in an advantageous position when New Deal public works projects came along in the 1930s. Fleet sales and service kept Curry Automotive afloat through the Great Depression. Then came the postwar economic boom, and Curry was one of the first to develop the concept of long-term leasing, forming the Curry Corporation in 1947 and leasing tens of thousands of vehicles.
In the 1950s, with B.F. Curry Jr. beginning to take the reins, the company opened a dealership on Central Avenue in Scarsdale that had everybody talking—vast 30-foot windows,

Motorcycles in the ’70s, Hondas in the ’80s, the rise of young B.F. Curry III to the CEO role in 2004— Curry Automotive has been moving from strength to strength for over a century, supporting good causes and staying innovative. In 2005, they helped build the Westchester Children’s Museum, and in the fall of 2017, their Toyota, Hyundai, and Subaru dealership buildings in Cortlandt Manor were approved as green LEED® Certified. (The Scarsdale Acura spot got an upgrade
too, with a large brand new service drive, ultra-modern showroom, and customer-facing improvements like a café, a new customer lounge, and a quiet lounge.)
Curry Automotive has the earmarks of a classic Hudson Valley business success story: bold, creative vision and community connections built through reliability and philanthropy, themes you’ll see mirrored in a great many of the stories we tell in these pages, whether we’re talking about a restaurant, a home goods store, or an antiques collective. The key to Hudson Valley and Catskills success stories tends to be doing it right and doing right by the neighbors.

Curry Automotive purchased the former Colonial Subaru in Kingston in December 2023, redesigning the service center and adding new amenities and equipment. Folks are impressed. Reviewers talk about a smooth, pressure-free, and transparent experience: “What an amazing car buying experience,” reads one recent example. “Todd and crew made my car buying stressless. They listened to my situation. I found the right car and PRICE. There was no hidden agenda. They worked very hard getting us approved and we
drove away in a brand new Subaru. We are so grateful that we stopped in and found a dealership that actually takes care of customers like family.”
When you tell General Manager Mark Bernicker that people seem to be loving the place, you can hear the smile in his voice. “That’s the goal,” he says. “That’s how the experience is supposed to be. That’s what I love about working for Curry, and that’s what I love about getting to sell Subarus. They’re just a really special car.”
