Melbourne is always a great music city, but during summer it gets even better with gigs, including the incredible ALWAYS LIVE program, taking place across the state.

If it’s your first time in Narrm (Melbourne), wominjeka! That’s welcome in the local Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language.

Get involved in some of Melburnians’ favourite pastimes. Pakistan's cricket team is touring, and they’ll take part in one of the year’s biggest sporting fixtures, the Boxing Day Test. If you prefer music to sport, we’ve also got you covered. Melbourne is a great music city, all year round, but during summer it gets even better with gigs, including the incredible ALWAYS LIVE program, taking place across the state.

You can get away from the crowds, too. Take a cruise or kayak down the Yarra River, explore a neighbourhood shopping precinct, or take to one of the city’s rooftop bars to enjoy a seasonal cocktail. There’s also a host of experiences available that will introduce you to the 65,000 years of Indigenous culture and history of the region.

Outside of the city's bright lights, regional Victoria epitomises the best of the season. At this time of year, our beaches along the Great Ocean Road are always popular, but you might want to explore even further. Discover the history, art and dining scenes in cities like Ballarat and Bendigo, take to the lakes of the Grampians or cruise down the mighty Murray River.

The days are longer and temperatures are rising. Summertime in Melbourne and Victoria has plenty to offer, from amazing attractions to enticing events.

Summer is one of our favourite times of year. Not just because the weather is incredible – the days are normally hot and clear – but because there’s that feeling you get when the kids are on school holidays and the cricket is on the TV. It’s one of the best times of year to get out and about and discover all Victoria has to offer.

Victorian artist Paink serves up an ace of a cover for this edition of the guide. And it’s all about one of his favourite events.

“But I’ve tried to reflect all the things that we see in summertime in Melbourne in the layers of the hand,” says the artist. “If you look closely, you’ll see lots of things you might recognise.”

Finding Inspiration Paink lives with his wife and son in North Balwyn, close to where he grew up. When it comes to inspiration, exercise is important.

Each day, he goes to the gym or runs with his staffie, Koh, around the neighbourhood.

School Daze It started with an art class when he realised school wasn’t his strong suit.

But it really kicked off when a group of friends working in Melbourne’s hospitality industry encouraged then-graphic designer Paink to paint a mural.

“I did more murals – one for the Australian Open, too – and shared the work I was doing on my social media,” he says. “That was 10 years

ago, and momentum kept building.

About two years ago I started shifting more towards the art and painting side, which I really love.”

Now, his style incorporates elements of street art and portraiture, often including musicians, movie stars or pop culture icons as subjects.

“I get inspired when I draw by listening to music,” says Paink. “All genres, depending on the vibes I’m trying to get for the types of things I’m painting, but mostly hip-hop and rap.

“My son’s three, and I love seeing how he responds to painting and paint. He’s so free and interested and spontaneous – that’s inspiring for me, too.”

There are exciting changes coming to Australian Open 2024, but you can still expect the same action-filled tournament the city loves.

New Additions This year, the Australian Open hits different. In one of the biggest changes to the event we’ve seen in years, the AO will now start on a Sunday, adding an extra day (14–28 January) and giving fans even more chances to enjoy all the action on offer. The first round will be spread across three days instead of two, making AO24 a 15-day event for the first time in its history.

Opening Week – before the main draw begins – will be bigger than ever before, allowing fans to get closer to the action as they watch the new generation of players battle it out to qualify and the stars of the game practice on Melbourne Park’s biggest show courts.

Everyone’s Included Kids Tennis Day (13 January) returns with fun for the family. Explore a magical world of wonder and play,

where young minds will be invited to dream and learn as they take in AO Ballpark presented by Emirates.

It features a multitude of racquetin-hand play opportunities for the whole family, as well as the Emirates Sky Tower, a children’s entertainment stage and a splash zone, all of which are sure to deliver hours of fun.

On the fiftieth anniversary of her first Australian Open title in 1974, Evonne Goolagong Cawley will be celebrated throughout the tournament, including on the dedicated AO First Nations Day (17 January). First Peoples’ artwork and storytelling will be shared, honouring culture and heritage.

Now, you can walk among these landscapes while visiting the BBC Earth Experience at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The seven continents are represented in the main gallery space, and

you’ll step onto polar ice caps, walk through ancient rainforests and meet mesmerising animals from around the globe.

Different Worlds Once you’ve stared upwards in a forest full of fireflies, watched on as two enormous elephant seals fight for domination or stood inside a tornado, there are even more zones to explore.

Micro Life takes you into a world not able to be seen by the naked eye, while Water Life goes to the ocean’s depths. There’s even a creepy-crawly room divided into two sections: one shows insects in their colourful beauty and the other may just make your skin crawl.

Making it Work All this is made possible using the latest audio-visual technology in a huge space with multiple screens all angled in different directions.

There’s no specific way or order to view the footage. Take your time, look all around you, go up on the raised viewing platforms for a different angle and listen for the silky tones of David Attenborough’s narration.

What's On

In 2019, the BBC’s most-watched factual TV show of the year was Seven Worlds, One Planet. The first episode featured Australia and it helped the show to become a massive hit here, too. It’s not surprising, considering there were 92 shoots across 41 countries and 1,794 days to make the series, and the footage featured wilderness regions that had never been seen before by large audiences.

It’s Showtime Roll up! Roll up! Guests young and old will be enthralled by the acts that come from all over the world for Circus 1903 (4–14 January) at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre.

There’s a new creature in town. This summer, head to Melbourne Central to meet Australia’s hottest street art identity.

Meet the Artist

With an aesthetic honed from his graphic design background, Brolga mixes daydream-like doodles with simple iconography to create his worlds and characters.

Growing up in Australia, his family would often make days-long trips across the country, moving house from Queensland to the Northern Territory and back. It’s on these road trips that Brolga began his art, illustrating his surreal and imaginative characters while journeying through the remote terrains of his home.

Creature Feature Brolga's latest creation, which moves from the 2D world to three dimensions, will debut at Melbourne Central in December and will be there until early January. Brolga created this unique sculptural piece inspired by the city, the culture and the people of Melbourne.

So who is Ernie? Often mistaken for either a rabbit, a kangaroo or some type of long-eared dog, Ernie doesn’t mind. Unfazed by the ambiguity, Ernie embraces his creative nature.

By day, Ernie leads spirited street art tours of the city. By night, he can often be found perched in a camp chair outside Melbourne Central’s Nike Store at 3am, being extra early for the next morning’s limited-edition shoe release.

Visit Ernie Don’t miss your chance to hang out with Ernie this summer at Melbourne Central’s Shot Tower Square. Over the holiday season, giant inflatable sculptures of Ernie will take over the much-loved Shot Tower under the cone (one of the most photographed landmarks of Melbourne).

To complement the art exhibit, Melbourne Central has created a souvenir shop in Shot Tower Square, inspired by Ernie and Brolga's vision.

What's On

Brolga is an Australian-based artist and illustrator who gained recognition for his large-scale wheat pastes, street art and murals on the streets of New York. He created a mural of Muhammad Ali in Williamsburg, and his crazy wheatpaste characters, large-scale murals and pop-styled street art became part of the fabric of New York City.

Ephemeral Energy The ephemeral nature of street art brings energy to Melbourne.

It’s ever-present, on the walls and along the footpaths, permanent yet impermanent, making it difficult to be collected and protected by the city’s galleries and libraries.

But the fact that street art is temporary is also part of its appeal. It is a living, breathing piece of Melbourne. Street art has become a space for dialogue between different street artists, sometimes building on each other’s work, commenting on evolving issues or representing different sides of the conversation.

Cultural Comment The veins of the city (its laneways) are the perfect canvas for this art.

The artistic expression on the streets is not only decorative, it plays a part in cultural commentary. Its visual energy is bold, inspiring, humorous, edgy, striking, grotesque, celebratory and contemplative.

It often addresses issues like inequality, social justice and human rights. One example sits on a windowsill in Hosier Lane, where the appearance of a melted tennis ball sculpture in early 2020 coincided with the Australian Open, emblazoned with the message #ClimateCrisis.

have inspired large-scale murals (the Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat tribute in Collingwood) and great works have been revised to scrutinise and challenge politics and society. Melbourne artist Julie Shiels’ The Grandmasters art installation appeared on the walls of a Fitzroy construction site in 2020 and depicts famous artworks altered to include the heads and notorious comments of Australian politicians.

High Culture

As well as being a street artist, Julie Shiels is a Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University. “Street art gives you lots of opportunities to experiment,” she says. “It fits Melbourne because the laneways offer the possibility of a chance encounter, and the best street art adds to this sense of surprise. Melbourne street art can be spontaneous, fleeting and transgressive and it’s possible to have a more private and intimate engagement when surrounded by a work discovered by chance.”

Urban Identity Adrian Doyle, a multi-awardwinning street artist and director of Melbourne’s longest-running urban art studio, Blender Studios, echoes similar sentiments when talking

“From the famous legal lanes to the hidden and underground treasures, there is something for everyone to discover in one of the world’s largest public art galleries,” he says.

Street art is so central to the city’s identity that it is even part of the branding of certain suburbs. Everfresh, a neighbourhood street art studio, created the “Welcome to Sunny Fitzroy” piece that covers the entire side wall of the Night Cat club on Johnston Street, projecting an artistic and bohemian image for the innernorth suburb.

Island Style Mabu Mabu (a saying from the Torres Strait that means ‘help yourself’) is an Indigenous-owned food business on a mission to make native ingredients the hero of the Australian kitchen.

Chef and owner Nornie Bero hails from Mer Island in the Torres Strait.

The islands are a diverse region, where Asian and Polynesian culinary traditions have had a significant impact on the cooking culture.

It all began with a stall at the South Melbourne Market, where Nornie sold sauces and condiments made from native ingredients. Now, Big Esso, the Mabu Mabu restaurant, has found its home in Fed Square, Melbourne’s visitor epicentre. Make sure to add it to your list of must-visit places.

There’s nothing like a good toastie and coffee from Via Porta in North Balwyn. When we’re close to home, that’s our go-to. Pillar of Salt in Richmond is a cityside favourite.

Past Residents The reading room wasn’t always a study space. It originally opened as McCoy Hall in 1899 and, for almost a century, was home to the National

Retired tennis champ Ash Barty has always loved her time on the golf course. Here, she takes to the green to tell us about her favourite Mornington Peninsula courses.

Just weeks after she retired from tennis, Aussie legend Ash Barty was showing her serious skills in another sport. She walked away the winner of the ladies’ golf championship at her local club in Queensland. It should come as no surprise she’d excel, having already dominated the world of tennis and mastered cricket. Plus, she’s got a willing partner in husband Garry Kissick, a scratch golfer and regular caddy for good friend Louis Dobbelaar.

On the Road Whenever the couple are in Melbourne, they head to the Mornington Peninsula, where more than 15 golf courses make the most of the beautiful landscape and its natural contours.

“Moonah Links at Fingal is really special,” says Ash. “There are two courses there – the Open and the Legends. The Open was designed especially for the 2003 Australian Open, so it’s pretty challenging. The Legends is a bit kinder, but still a great spot to play 18 holes.”
