Welcome to Victoria. Spring has arrived and there’s so much to see and do right across Melbourne and the regions. Spring is festival season. The iconic Spring Racing Carnival brings fashion, racing and hospitality to one of Australia’s most celebrated occasions. The style continues as Melbourne Fashion Week returns with runway shows, workshops and talks celebrating fashion and creativity. It’s also time for Melbourne Fringe, with comedy, theatre, music and more at venues across the city.

Beyond the festivals, Melbourne’s galleries, museums and theatres continue to offer memorable experiences. This spring, see ROME: Empire, Power, People at Melbourne Museum, Cartier at NGV International, or A Beautiful Noise at Princess Theatre, the musical inspired by the life and music of Neil Diamond. For sports fans, there’s no better place to be than Australia’s events capital this spring. Witness history as Melbourne hosts Australia’s first-ever NFL regular season game at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The AFL Finals Series will see the competition’s best teams compete for premiership glory, while the NBL brings more elite basketball action to the city and the regions. It’s a month of unforgettable sporting moments you won’t want to miss. We can’t wait to welcome you to Victoria and showcase the incredible experiences that make our state one of the world’s great destinations. We hope you enjoy every moment and take home memories that last a lifetime. Natalie Suleyman MP Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment

Wominjeka! That’s welcome in the local languages of the First Peoples of Narrm (Melbourne) and surrounding areas. Victoria’s spring calendar has packed even more in this season. From the first-ever NFL regular season game in Australia, featuring the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, to the AFL finals season when the city takes on a unique energy as fans gather across Melbourne. The Melbourne International Jazz Festival brings world-class performances to venues across the city. Diwali will be celebrated in communities across Victoria including at Fed Square and Marvel Stadium, where there’ll be music, dancing, food and fireworks.

It’s also a great time to be outdoors. Take a train, tram or ferry to explore some of our favourite neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character. Regional Victoria comes into bloom with food and wine festivals. Explore the towns and enjoy local produce, hospitality and outdoor adventures. Discover a wellness retreat, pick seasonal fruit and flowers, or join a cruise to see a seal colony. Wherever you travel in Victoria this spring, you’re sure to discover the season’s finest. BRENDAN MCCLEMENTS Chief Executive Officer Visit Victoria

Live music continues throughout spring when 120 performers will pay tribute to one of the country’s bestloved performers at The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend – The Celebration Concert.

ILLUSTRATOR ELISE GOW TURNS HER ATTENTION FROM VICTORIA’S SMALLER CITIES AND TOWNS TO MELBOURNE FOR THIS EDITION’S COVER. HERE SHE SHARES HER TIPS FOR ENJOYING SPRING. CALENDAR SWIRLS

SEASONAL STANDARDS

VILLAGE VOICES

When illustrator Elise Gow drew the town she lives in two years ago, she never expected it to lead to a change in her artistic career. That drawing of Gisborne, in the Macedon Ranges, was so well received by locals, she went on to illustrate the neighbouring town of Riddells Creek, famous for its flock of geese. “This illustration also received a great response from the local community, birthing the idea to create a Macedon Ranges calendar featuring 12 local towns,” she says. So, in 10 weeks she drew 10 more towns, all with input from their communities, to create a calendar that sold more than 900 copies.

For this edition, the former photographer, who has lived all over Australia and in the UK, turned her skills to celebrating Melbourne and the season. “Spring in Victoria is a feast for the senses,” says Elise. “I love seeing everything in bloom and coming back to life after being shut away over winter – and that’s especially true here in the beautiful Macedon Ranges. It’s the perfect time to get out and explore locations such as Mount Macedon, with the Stanley Park waterfall, Sanatorium Lake and the Memorial Cross on the top of the mountain, as well as several local hiking options.”

For visitors looking to explore outside Melbourne for the first time, Elise recommends Kyneton, easily accessible by regional train from the city. “The town truly comes alive in spring with thousands of gorgeous yellow daffodils lining the historical streets,” she explains. “The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival (4–13 September) has been running for 50 years and draws crowds both locally and from all over Victoria to help celebrate the beauty of spring. Piper Street is also worth a visit for shopping, food and the monthly Kyneton Farmers’ Market where I have a stall selling my artwork.” + elisegowdesigns.com

SONG SUNG TRUE HE’S BEEN LIVING IN THE WORLD OF NEIL DIAMOND. WILL SWENSON TALKS ABOUT BRINGING A MUSICAL BASED ON THE SINGER’S LIFE TO MELBOURNE.

18

LEGEND OF SONGWRITING Will Swenson is a self-confessed Neil Diamond fanatic. For most of us, that would be where our interest would end, but in January 2020 he played a set of songs for the songwriting legend. It was then that Neil Diamond himself gave Will his blessing to begin

work on A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical (until 7 November). Two-and-a-half years later, Will debuted as the younger Neil (Neil – Then) at the Boston premiere before the production moved to Broadway. Now, he’s in Melbourne performing the role at the Princess Theatre.

LET THE PEOPLE SING

MELBOURNE MOMENTS A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical

Neil Diamond

Will has visited Melbourne before and is happy to be back. “I love the grit and the culture almost as much as I love the coffee,” he says. “I’m looking forward to catching some AFL games and checking out the sports venues Melbourne is so well known for.” Plus, it will be a good opportunity for him to take advantage of Melbourne’s other offerings. “Anytime I can catch local artists and local productions, I am 100 per cent there,” says Will. “Also, given I’m playing Neil Diamond, I’m keen to see the Cartier exhibition (until 4 October) at NGV International.” + theneildiamondmusical.com.au

19

WHAT’S ON

The biggest moment for those in the audience may come as no surprise. “’Sweet Caroline’ gets the biggest reaction,” says Will. “It seems like everyone comes ready to sing along and be a part of that number, so that one is always terrific.” For him, though, it is another song he looks forward to performing during each show. “If I had to pick one song, it would probably be ’Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show’. It opens the second act and depicts Neil Diamond at the height of his powers. The whole huge band is finally seen on stage, and Neil gets to sing this gigantic, fantastic gospel song covered in sequins.”

FRINGE APPEAL BACK FOR ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR, THE MELBOURNE FRINGE FESTIVAL HAS INDEPENDENT SHOWS, RADICAL EXHIBITIONS AND NON-STOP PARTIES FOR ALL.

JUST START HERE The city’s biggest celebration of independent arts, the Melbourne Fringe Festival (29 September – 18 October) is back for another year of thrills and discovery. There are more than 400 events on the program, so start with Dhandha/Campfire, a major new participatory installation by Joel Bray Dance at Fed Square. Drawing on the cultural and spiritual resonance of the campfire as a place of gathering, storytelling and ceremony, it fuses light, sound and sculpture with daily performance rituals.

THAT’S DEADLY Back for its tenth season is Deadly Fringe, a First Peoples-led program. As well as Dhandha/Campfire, there’s Aunty Annette’s Outblak, featuring razor-sharp humour and storytelling from a beloved Elder, Na Djinang Circus’s Ocker, a roving circus tearing through the city on a portable railway track, and so much more. 20

Dhandha/Campfire

MEETING POINT This year, there are two festival hubs: one at Trades Hall and the other, Meat Market, in North Melbourne. These two venues feature performances and happenings in meeting rooms, ballrooms and even cupboards. There are bars, of course, but Trades Hall hosts Club Fringe, for DJs, dancing and performance art, every Friday and Saturday night. It’s where legends are made. + melbournefringe.com.au

Yiaga

THIS CITY EATS WELL

ROASTING REPUTATION

TAKE A SIP

Melbourne’s food scene thrives on curiosity. Influenced by generations of migration and supported by exceptional Victorian produce, it is a place where chefs, bakers, winemakers and restaurateurs are constantly refining, reimagining and reinventing their craft. There are many family-run institutions and plenty of ambitious new kitchens too, and the commitment to quality and creativity can be tasted across the city. Two sterling examples are Gimlet, loved for its lavish space and European-leaning menu, and Yiaga, an homage to Australia, with every element handcrafted and a set menu honouring local fishers, farmers and foragers. + gimlet.melbourne + yiaga.au

Coffee is woven into Melbourne’s daily rhythm, where quality is an expectation rather than a luxury. What began with the city’s European cafe traditions has grown into a culture of independent roasters, neighbourhood cafes and baristas whose attention to detail has earned global recognition. Every Melburnian has their favourite spot, with some preferring to grab their flat white to go – Patricia Coffee Brewers is a favourite for anyone on the move – while others will sit and savour. Axil Coffee Roasters is recommended. It offers special seasonal coffee drinks and boasts 2025 World Barista Champion Jack Simpson among its ranks. + patriciacoffee.com.au + axilcoffee.com.au

Victoria has a proud tradition of winemaking, and that’s highlighted in Melbourne’s many wine bars. They sit somewhere between casual cafe and fine diner, where it’s equally acceptable to drop by for a glass and a snack before the theatre or settle in for dinner. Not sure what to order? The folks behind the bar are experts and can guide you through the list to find the perfect glass. An institution of Melbourne’s wine scene, City Wine Shop pairs a thoughtful wine list with a lively terrace that has become one of the city’s favourite spots. + citywineshop.net.au

EAT & DRINK

SPRING BRINGS RENEWAL. WITH NEW-SEASON PRODUCE PROVIDING INSPIRATION TO CHEFS, IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO EXPLORE MELBOURNE’S CULINARY SCENE. HERE’S WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY MELBOURNE’S RESTAURANT SCENE IS ALWAYS EVOLVING. HERE’S WHERE TO BOOK A TABLE FOR THE LATEST FLAVOURS AND NEWEST PLACES TO BE.

EUROPEAN LEANINGS There’s no place like Roma, a trattoria serving classic dishes from the Eternal City, including nettle ravioli, frutti di mare, osso bucco and frattaglie (offal). It’s from leading Melbourne restaurateur, Con Christopoulos, so you know it’ll be great. ♦ Step into The Florence, a wine bar inspired by the vintages, cocktails and snacks of Tuscany. The vitello and caperberry sandwich should be on your mustorder list. ♦ Guests at Hannah St Hotel are lucky. Why? Its inviting bistro, Coupette, is open from morning till night, serving up excellent dishes, including a steak frites you won’t want to share and mouthwatering cheeseburgers. + romamelbourne.com.au + theflorence.com.au + coupettemelbourne.com.au

EAT & DRINK

Foundry Kitchen & Bar

REINTERPRET THE FAMILIAR Check out Common Cuts, a city grill and listening room. Choose from an assortment of steak cuts, including an exceedingly good-value steak frites, then tuck in while vintage vinyl plays. There are Japanese-inspired cocktails, too. ♦ Step inside a heritage-listed building from 1885 and find yourself at the lush Bar Ferdinand. It has just 21 seats in a room bedecked in plants, and bartenders delivering innovative cocktails inspired by local

flora. ♦ Head to the rooftop at Mercure Melbourne for Foundry Kitchen & Bar, where the chefs retool common ingredients and recipes into dishes that feel both fresh and familiar. + commoncuts.com.au + bar-ferdinand.com.au + foundrykitchenandbar.com.au

CITY FRINGE EATS Choose a spot just out of central Melbourne for a more local dining experience. For 20 years, Gerald’s Bar set the standard for neighbourhood favourites. Now, it’s moved into a

larger space in Carlton North but has maintained its soul. Expect the same supremely good drinks, sharing dishes and service, but now with a separate dining room. ♦ Round the corner on Rathdowne Street, is Bar Carnation, where the menu and drinks list lean towards Europe, and more specifically Italy. There’s also a bottle shop out the back. ♦ In Richmond, Spaghetti Club is a candlelit diner, with house-made pasta and dishes inspired by co-owner Lucas Gugliandolo’s Italian roots. + geraldsbar.com + barcarnation.com + spaghetticlub.com.au 45

Victor Liong

VICTOR LIONG IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH, WITH LEE HO FOOK, ONE OF YOTAM OTTOLENGHI’S FAVOURITE MELBOURNE RESTAURANTS, AND NOW SUSHI TRAIN BOSSA NOVA.

“

THE LEE HO FOOK EXPERIENCE We aim to showcase the best of Australia through modern Chinese cuisine, highlighting fine ingredients, producers and winemakers. In Victoria, we’re surrounded by great produce, unique ingredients and some of the best wines in the world and we want guests to feel that.

EASY DOES IT Between meetings you’ll find me at Paramount Food Court on Little Bourke Street. My go-tos are Ceylon Wok or Asia Unique. If I’m on the go, I’ll grab a kimbap [rice and other ingredients rolled in dried seaweed] from Jan Go Mama. For a proper, nofuss sit-down, I like Butchers Diner.

GOING REGIONAL LATE-NIGHT BITES

BIG NIGHT OUT Have a cocktail at Di Stasio Città then dine with us. You can’t go wrong with our signature dishes like pickled mussels and Fujian fried rice, all enjoyed with excellent Australian wine. Then enjoy a nightcap at Apollo Inn down the road. 46

Shop, overlooking Parliament steps. It’s such a nice way to experience the vibe of the city. I love chardonnay, and Beechworth is our state’s gem. A few of my personal favourites from that region are Giaconda and Savaterre, but there are no bad wines from Beechworth.

After service, I go to Supper Inn for lobster noodles and short soup, with the world’s coldest Tsingtaos. I don’t know how they get them so cold!

WINE MATCH The perfect Melbourne afternoon is on Spring Street at City Wine

Recently I enjoyed a trip to Daylesford. Stay anywhere by the lake – the Lake House is an icon – eat and drink at Bar Merenda, and drink the wine of local producers like Curly Flat, Latta Vino or Bindi. + leehofook.com.au

Commissioned by Melbourne Theatre Company’s NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program, Before I Forget (24 October – 28 November) is a fierce, funny, poignant tribute to the strength of Blak matriarchy and the memories that shape us. This compelling new work, which deals with navigating a parent – one who won’t go quietly – into aged care, is a testimony to healing, forgiveness and the unconditional love of family.

Fans of Indigenous storytelling will be familiar with the work of Bell-Wykes, who wrote Whose Gonna Love ’Em? I Am that i AM and directed A Wake – A Woke Mob. But anyone looking for a must-see piece of theatre that will sit with them long after the curtains drop should book a ticket. And, if you see it during the preview season (24–28 October), seats are only $75. + mtc.com.au

STAGE HISTORY

LEGENDS ALL

For its second exhibition, the recently opened Australian Museum of Performing Arts (AMPA) at Arts Centre Melbourne is shining the spotlight on five decades of local talent and all that surrounds it. ENCORE! 50 Objects. 50 Years. One Collection. (from 16 September) includes 50 pieces from the Australian Performing Arts Collection, all representing its 50-year history. Some have never been displayed to the public before, so this is a fantastic opportunity to see them up close.

When you think about Australian performers, who comes to mind? If you said Olivia Newton-John, Dame Nellie Melba or Hugh Jackman then you’ll be pleased to know they’re all here. But among costumes, instruments, set models, scripts, puppets and more, some equally talented performers are represented, including dancer Russell Page, artist Mirka Mora, Peter Allen, Judith Durham of the Seekers, and playwright Ray Lawler.

62

THE HOT LIST Some of the best-known pieces in ENCORE! include the original

neon L’Amour sign created by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin for Opera Australia’s La Bohème, Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst’s kit, and a piece burnt into our collective psyches: Kylie Minogue’s gold hot pants from her ’Spinning Around’ video. This is your opportunity to discover the craft, ingenuity and folklore behind some of Australia’s unforgettable stage moments. + artscentremelbourne.com.au/ampa

BASICS BEYOND BLACK

Melbourne in Depth: An ongoing RMIT series on lifestyle and culture in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Written by Dr Nadja Dollisson and Professor Francis Farrelly. Coordinated by Dr Stephan Dua Modest (RMIT Marketing)

IDENTITY HERE IS SHAPED BY INTERPRETATION AND SOCIETY. STYLE IS INSPIRED BY SUBCULTURES AND STREET LIFE AND BEING READ CORRECTLY OFTEN MATTERS MORE THAN BEING NOTICED.

STYLE IN TRANSIT In Melbourne, people navigate four seasons in a day, commuting on foot and public transport, and the city dresses for that movement and unpredictability. These rhythms favour layers, weatherproof coats, sneakers and bags that can move as easily from a rain-soaked commute to a gallery opening. The idea that Melburnians prefer wearing black may owe as much to practicality as to aesthetics. The neutral base clears visual noise, letting texture, silhouette and wellconsidered details define the look. Social moments – quick coffees in laneways, chats on footpaths or trams – are repeated encounters that occur without ceremony. Fashion operates within this quiet economy of recognition, offering clues about taste, interests and identity before a word is said.

Tram on Flinders Street

70

GLOSS AND GRIT The city contains distinct fashion worlds that sit side by side. At the South Yarra end of Chapel Street, style leans toward the polished and aspirational. Activewear, sharp denim, tailored blazers and elevated basics reflect a lifestyle that moves seamlessly between Pilates workouts, meetings and late-afternoon drinks. Walk south past Commercial Road, and the mood shifts. Windsor reads as more bohemian and subcultural, with tattoo studios, band tees, queer clubwear, vintage stores and

small boutiques blending retro sportswear with op-shop finds. In the space of a tram ride, fashion moves from performance to experimentation. This coexistence is equally visible between Collins Street’s luxury fashion houses and the creative edge of neighbouring suburbs Fitzroy and Collingwood. All these contrasts form the city’s fashion ecology, where polish and patina operate as complementary values rather than opposing ones.

THE WORN IDENTITY Threaded through all of this are migrant and queer style cultures that add even more texture to the tapestry. Along Sydney Road and in Footscray, clothing reflects the communities that have shaped these neighbourhoods. Vibrant African prints, modest fashion and everyday contemporary dress sit comfortably shoulder to shoulder, while Japanese denim and sneaker culture thrive in city arcades. Melbourne is not simply the setting for fashion, but its collaborator. The styles may differ, but they all remain recognisably Melbourne.

HISTORICAL HOUSING

IT’S IN THE DETAILS

During Melbourne’s population boom in the gold rush of the 1850s, large numbers of terrace houses were built in the growing suburbs around Melbourne city. They resembled homes in London and other British cities. Some were huge, with three or four storeys; others more modest. What made Australia’s version different from their counterparts in the United Kingdom, however, were the balconies and the intricate cast-iron balustrades. By the 1990s and into the 2000s, the suburbs they were in were gentrified and the houses restored.

In Melbourne’s terrace houses there were other interesting elements too: decorative parapets, Italianate chimneys and polychrome brickwork. Today, you can see the oldest complete row of terraces, dating back to about 1857, along Fitzroy’s Nicholson Street, opposite the Royal Exhibition Building. Elsewhere in that neighbourhood, terraces have been converted into restaurants, like Rocco’s Bologna Discoteca, where the original brick walls can still be seen as you’re tucking into the original meatball sub. Two doors away is a two-storey bluestone house built in 1853, while other houses have found new life as wine bars, galleries and independent shops. + roccosbologna.com

TANTALISING TRANSFORMATIONS In North Fitzroy, Matteo’s, a finediner with a modern approach to Italian cooking, is in an adapted elegant triple-fronted terrace house. In South Melbourne, incredibly beautiful fretwork on the balcony is a feature at The Kettle Black, an upmarket cafe set within a terrace house from the 1880s with a contemporary addition. On Flinders Lane, the Gothic Revival Chapter House, built in 1891 beside St Paul’s Cathedral, has been repurposed as a retail precinct. Get Sunday started right with Feel Good Flows, a yoga class on the rooftop of St Kilda Sea Baths, overlooking the beach. You could also work up a sweat with The Morning Drop, a monthly sober run and rave session in South Melbourne. Check its Instagram page for the next date. Runners might like to join the 2XU Wellness Run for Beyond Blue (22 November) on the St Kilda foreshore and surrounds, starting at Catani Gardens. Whether you’re recovering from a long run or just trying to become more relaxed, book a sauna, cold plunge and massage at Elwood’s Pando Society.

TIME TO REFUEL Mid-walk or post-run, there are loads of places to grab breakfast or coffee. One of the most popular is Beach Shack at Elwood, for acai bowls, toasties and irresistible pastries. In St Kilda, Sebby’s Scrolls makes Melbourne’s best cinnamon scrolls. In Balaclava, Wall Two 80 is a vibrant cafe with a seasonal menu. It also has dog bikkies made with oats and bacon fat. The historical St Kilda Pier Kiosk has reopened for sandwiches, gelato, coffee and, on the weekend, fish and chips. Another local favourite is South Melbourne’s Deli Boy for paninis, open-faced sandwiches and pastries.

BEYOND MELBOURNE

This is a great time of year to go for a long walk, run or bike ride, breathing in the fresh air and shrugging off the winter blues. One picturesque spot is Albert Park, where you can do a loop around the lake, watch the swans and take in the incredible views of the city skyline. The other much-loved route for walkers and cyclists is the Foreshore Trail, which stretches from Port Melbourne to Elwood. If you’ve got your dog with you, they can run off leash at the beach, including the long stretch of sand at Port Melbourne, until 31 October.

AFTERNOON DELIGHTS

Although you can catch a train from the city to Williamstown (Melbourne’s oldest suburb and the city’s first settlement) a far more scenic way to get there is with Melbourne River Cruises. Staying in St Kilda? Jump on the St Kilda Ferry for the half-hour trip. Be sure to check the website for ferry schedules and eatery opening hours. Once you arrive at Gem Pier, take a walk along the waterfront. At Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park, check out Timeball Tower, which was once used for chronology and ship navigation. If you’ve got the kids with you, they might like to paddle in the calm, shallow water at Williamstown Beach.

Time for lunch? Head to Gem Pier Seafood and get a lobster roll or seafood platter then have a picnic overlooking the water. If you’re lucky, you might see a pod of dolphins or some seals frolicking. Combine your midday meal with a slice of history when you take your feast to Williamstown Botanic Garden, which is 165 years old and set right by the bay. With its ornamental pond, mature trees, formal palm avenue and spring blooms, there are plenty of pleasant places to spread out a blanket.

If you’ve got a penchant for some retail recovery, visit Ferguson Street, where there is a range of boutiques for browsing. When it’s time to take a load off, head to Hobsons Bay Hotel. It has a stunning rooftop bar where you can order an ice cold beverage and make the most of the afternoon sun, as you stare out at the view over the water and back to the city. The longer days mean you can also enjoy dinner with a sunset view. Try one of the many waterfront dining options like Pier Farm. For expert advice on what to do when you arrive in Williamstown, drop into the Visitor Information Centre. + experiencehobsonsbay.com.au

NEW PICK UP AND DROP OFF ZONES ARE COMING. The biggest change to Melbourne Airport’s road network in its 56 year history is coming in October. The Naarm Way project will change the way you pick up and drop off to help make journeys smoother and more streamlined.

Later this year, the new free and expanded Pick Up and Drop Off zones for passengers using Terminal 1 (Qantas Domestic), Terminal 2 (International) and Terminal 3 (Virgin Australia) will open in the T123 Transport Hub. There’ll be a new dedicated exit from the Tullamarine

Freeway, which will take passengers directly to the T123 Transport Hub. Level 3 of the T123 Transport Hub will become the new dedicated Drop Off zone, providing more than 70 vehicle spaces which is double the capacity of the existing drop off ramp. Level 2 of the T123 Transport Hub will become the new dedicated Pick Up zone, with spaces for more than 100 vehicles, again more than doubling the existing capacity. A new 19 metre wide pedestrian bridge will provide direct passenger access from the T123 Transport Hub to the terminals. The new Pick Up and Drop Off zones will pave the way for the expansion of the T2 International Terminal. There will be plenty of support on hand to help guide everyone through the changes.

Three hours west of Melbourne is Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. With more than a thousand native plant species, it is one of the best places to see spring wildflowers. Look out for sun orchids growing from the ground. ♦ In the Great Otways National Park, Anglesea Heath is another paradise for orchid lovers, with more than a hundred species growing there. Another plant to look out for is the common heath, which has masses of pink, red or white flowers and is Victoria’s floral emblem. ♦ Near Bendigo, Kooyoora State Park is another floral hot spot. During spring, Friends of Kooyoora hosts guided wildflower walks. + parks.vic.gov.au

Wander among the ranunculus, larkspur and more before enjoying a catered picnic at Bloom Into You Flower Farm. Keep an eye on a range of events on offer or book a stay at Villa Minto. ♦ The peony is a symbol of prosperity and happiness, and when it begins to bloom at Spring Hill Peony Farm in the Macedon Ranges, there’s the chance to enjoy a Peony Paddock Picnic (from 5 November). ♦ Inspired by Monet’s gardens, Felicity McDonald began establishing her own plot on the Mitta Mitta River in 1991. Now, people can visit her creation, The Witches Garden, named because she planted species that were not only beautiful but served a purpose. + bloomintoyou.com.au + springhillpeonyfarm.com.au + thewitchesgarden.com

Every Saturday during spring, Pure Maiden Farm, northwest of Bendigo, invites guests to wander through fields of flowers to take photos and pick a farm-fresh bouquet. ♦ This season, fruit farms right across the Yarra Valley open for picking days. From November, pick cherries straight from the tree at CherryHill Orchards in the Yarra Valley, then settle in with a picnic, cherry ice-cream or a stop at the farmgate store. ♦ Rayner’s Orchard grows more than 450 different varieties of fruit and is open for anyone wanting to fill their bucket. RAISE A GLASS For 166 years, wine has been made at Tahbilk, the oldest family-owned vineyard in Victoria. Some of its shiraz vines were planted in 1860 and, to this day, are harvested to make one of this estate’s rarest vintages. Of course, you can visit Tahbilk to taste its wines but make a day of it: stay for lunch in the restaurant, tour the museum, visit the underground cellar and take an eco-cruise through the wetlands.

FRESH IS BEST

For the first time in a decade, Victoria is hosting the work of the best photojournalists and documentary photographers during the World Press Photo exhibition (until 20 September) at Ballarat Mining Exchange. Find more inspired creativity at the new extension of Melbourne Fringe Festival, Fringe Encore: Ballarat (22–25 October). Expect headline shows, free outdoor artworks and performances from local and international artists, including exclusive shows you won’t see elsewhere, in venues right across the city. Then, get set for a weekend of historical re-enactments, live entertainment and family-friendly fun when the Victorian Medieval Festival (21–22 November) returns to Kryal Castle.

A worldwide movement is reviving some of history’s rare trades and, in this country, it’s led by The Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades. This season, book a class in leadlighting, screenprinting, blacksmithing and more. You can even learn traditional weaving techniques during the Wadawurrung Weaving: Karrap Karrap (Many Flowers) workshop (7 November) with Tammy Gilson. In central Ballarat, ceramic artist and educator Shelby Sherritt has opened The Pottage, a community craft studio where visitors can paint ceramics, learn to throw clay on a wheel or book a time to work on their own projects.

Fill your basket with spring produce at Ballarat Farmers’ Market. Held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, it attracts up to 130 stallholders who bring produce fresh from their farms, as well as jams, fudge, gin and plenty of other great regional tastes. Even bigger is the SpringFest Market (29 November), which transforms the Lake Wendouree and Ballarat Botanical Gardens precinct into a celebration of local food, makers and community groups. If you love baked goods, head to Kittelty’s characterfilled corner store, where local legend Sara Kittelty makes fluffy sponges, Basque cheesecakes and much more. + visitballarat.com.au

VICTORIA’S 49ERS REGIONS

80 YEARS OF HISTORY In 1946, the San Francisco 49ers became the first major professional sports team to call the city by the bay home. The team has since built one of the NFL’s premier franchises, and most importantly, The Faithful remain at the heart of the 49ers story, supporting the team through every era.

Central to the 49ers’ identity is the fan base known as The Faithful. Whether they’re filling stadiums in red and gold or travelling across the world to support the team on the road, their passion and loyalty are a notable advantage both home and away.

Joining the 49ers players, coaches and staff in Melbourne, are the team’s Gold Rush cheer squad and mascot, Sourdough Sam. On a recent trip to Melbourne, he flew over the MCG in a hot air balloon!

LOCAL FAVOURITES

xi

NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson has been to around 40 countries during his high-flying career. In June, he arrived in Melbourne, where he explored the city and headed to the MCG for a Collingwood–Hawthorn game that ended in a hard-fought draw. “In September, NFL at the MCG, one of the world’s greatest stadiums, is going to feel like a mini-Super Bowl,” he said after the game. Away from sport, he enjoyed a feast at Hazel, where chef Lauren See uses seasonal produce from a regenerative farm to create a modern Australian menu, and explored the laneways with Localing Tours. + mcg.org.au + hazelrestaurant.com.au + localingtours.com

ANIMAL CRACKERS

FLYING HIGH One of Scott’s favourite adventures was a helicopter flight to the 12 Apostles. During the 3.5-hour tour, from the Microflite city helipad, he flew over some of the city’s best sights, including the MCG, before heading southwest. “This is one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth,” he said, as he soared over the limestone rock stacks. The chopper also lands at the Apostles, so you can check them out from the viewing platform. For those short on time, a helicopter flight offers an unforgettable perspective on this rugged corner of Victoria. MORE UNMISSABLE MELBOURNE MOMENTS These Melbourne favourites offer a taste of what makes the city so special. Consider this your essential list of experiences not to miss while you’re here. 1. Explore Melbourne’s laneways, where vibrant street art, hidden bars and local favourites await around every corner. 2. Experience the city’s renowned coffee by settling into one of many cafe’s. Try a Melbourne Magic at Duke’s Coffee. 3. Visit Queen Victoria Market for fresh produce, artisan goods, unique souvenirs and delicious street food. 4. Ride the free City Circle Tram and discover many of the city's landmark attractions along the way. 5. Connect with First Peoples culture through experiences that share the stories and traditions of Victoria’s First Peoples. 6. Wander through Melbourne’s beautiful gardens, from the Royal Botanic Gardens to the historic Fitzroy Gardens. 7. Shop Melbourne’s distinctive precincts for designer fashion, vintage treasures and independent local brands. 8. Cruise the Yarra River or enjoy the vibrant waterfront atmosphere.

Like many overseas visitors to Melbourne, Scott spent some time at Melbourne Zoo. While well known for its famous residents, like the western lowland gorillas, orangutans and Sumatran tigers, there are also plenty of Australian native species there, and Scott took part in one of the animal experiences available to visitors. “Just hanging with my koala friend, Adam,” he told his 120,000 Instagram followers, as he offered branches of gum leaves for them to eat. “It’s so cool to be this close to them.” There’s also a bookable kangaroo experience available. + zoo.org.au
