REMEMBER TO KEEP LEFT EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE. Always drive on the left side of the road in Australia. This may be different from the side you drive at home.

Ask your passengers to remind you to keep left each time you set off and when you are turning at an intersection.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS. Have a good sleep before a long drive, especially after a long flight. If possible, share the driving with your companions.

Take regular rest breaks every two hours, take a 15-minute power nap and get out of the vehicle.

EVERYONE MUST WEAR SEATBELTS. It is the law for everyone to wear a seatbelt. Children under seven must use an approved child seat. Your rental car company can provide one if you don’t have your own.

DRIVE WITHIN THE LIMITS AND TO THE CONDITIONS. Roads in Victoria have different speed limits, and they are strictly enforced.

The weather can change quickly, which can create wet roads and sudden hazards.

Always stay within the speed limit and choose a speed that is safe for the current driving conditions.

LOOK OUT FOR ANIMAL HAZARDS. Watch for animals on the road, especially on rural roads near sunset and sunrise.

YOUR SPEED AFFECTS OTHERS. If driving slowly, pull over where it is safe and let faster traffic pass.

If you’re driving a campervan or motorhome, or towing a caravan and traffic builds up behind you, pull over safely to let others pass. Use passing lanes or slow vehicle turnouts when you can and never cross a solid white line.

TAKING PHOTOS? PULL OVER SOMEWHERE SAFE. Keep your eyes on the road, not the scenery.

If you want to enjoy the view, pull off the road safely and stop completely.

AVOID DISTRACTIONS. NO MOBILE PHONES. Drivers are not permitted to use a handheld mobile phone when driving – it’s against the law. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over at a rest area or in a safe place.

GET TO KNOW THE ROAD RULES, SIGNS AND MARKINGS BEFORE YOU DRIVE. Before you drive in Victoria, make sure you understand our road rules.

• Obey all road signs and markings. They warn you about dangers, give you information and tell you the rules.

• A stop sign means you must come to a complete stop and give way to all traffic.

• If you break the road rules or cause an accident, you may be fined or prosecuted.

• To ride a motorcycle or motor scooter, you need to wear an approved helmet and have a valid motorcycle licence.

• To drive in Victoria you must have a current valid driver’s licence from your home country.

Carry it with you at all times when driving.

• Your journey may take longer than you expect.

Allow extra time.

Some of Victoria’s roads can be narrow, winding or rough. Even if places look close on a map, driving can take longer than expected. Plan ahead. Map out your trip and allow extra time for travel and rest stops.

Stay safe on Victorian waterways Victoria has some of the best boating, fishing and paddling experiences in Australia. Whether you’re heading out on a boat, jet ski, kayak or paddleboard, a little preparation goes a long way.

Before you hit the water, know local waterway rules and remember these three essentials: 1. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets save lives and are required in many situations across Victoria.

• Carry a lifejacket for every person on board • Wear it correctly and fastened securely • Ensure children under 12 always wear a lifejacket Lifejacket laws vary by waterway, vessel and conditions.

2. Check conditions Conditions can change quickly, even on calm days.

• Check the weather and wind • Be aware of tides, currents and hazards • Stay within your experience level 3. Stay connected Let someone know your plans before you leave.
