Meet Emily and Steve Kitts, proprietors of craft brewery and taproom Naughty Oak Brewing Company. The couple recently branched out and opened a second taproom in downtown Santa Ynez. With an expansive industrial interior and homey vibe and a solid line-up on tap, plan on staying for a pint or two. We got a chance to talk with Steve, the man behind the brew, about all things Naughty Oak.

What inspired the leap from garage home brewing to launching a 2,400-square-foot commercial brewery/bar and now a second taproom?

A: A drive to live life doing something that we enjoy.

Naughty Oak - the oak seems rather obvious given your geographic location, but how about the “naughty”?

A: Right on with oak symbology. The 'Naughty' has to with our decision to do things our way.

The essential ingredients; water, yeast, hops, and malt - locally sourced or secret supplier from afar?

A: We use high-quality ingredients grown in all corners of the world - what’s fresh & the best for the style.

Given the full range of styles on tap, do you have a signature brew or one that captures the essence of Naughty Oak?

A: We focus on lagers and flavorful ales because we love them and they're perfect for our locale. Our lagers match the easygoing California lifestyle, year-round sun, & cuisine - BBQ and Mexican food specifically. Our ale selection is flavor-forward and balanced rather than being overly extreme in any direction.

With your flagship and rotating brews, what’s the best way for customers to sample the variety offered?

A: We have five core beers that are always on tap and seven other rotating styles that keep things interesting. We offer taster flights - choose four beers or a flight of the 12 available beers.

What else would you like for customers to know about Naughty Oak?

The Santa Ynez Valley is famous for its wineries. EACH OF THE SIX THRIVING TOWNS THAT are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back.

LOS OLIVOS: With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one main commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. The town is the perfect mix of styles ranging from country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool.

BALLARD: The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, began life as a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and The Gathering Table, it’s the perfect place to disappear for a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. Don’t miss a visit to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass.

SANTA YNEZ: A couple of miles south, is the tiny town of Santa Ynez. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find boot-stompin’ bars and a craft brewery featuring live music on the weekends, as well as farm-to-table restaurants serving upscale Mexican, traditional Italian, and contemporary American wine-country cuisine. And with several low-key hotels and inns here, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley.

SOLVANG: This town is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals, half-timbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages and pastries and the ever-popular and delightfully diet-busting sweet treat aebleskiver.

BUELLTON: A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On Industrial Way, you can visit a huge wine enterprise, fantastic breweries and brewpubs, a craft distillery and fine restaurants within a Frisbee throw of each other. Dining options in Buellton are plentiful and offer up everything from steaks cooked to perfection on an oak fire pit, to restaurants focusing on locavore inspired dishes, and exceptional wood-fired pizza.

LOS ALAMOS: The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the SYV proper by the Santa Rita Hills. However, this gastro center is attracting foodies from far and wide and cool businesses selling sophisticated goods are sprinkled along the 200 yard-long commercial strip. The nickname "Little L.A." plays on Los Alamos’ own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent, quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more.

COUNTRY TOWN CITY WINE FOOD & SHOPPING

CALIFORNIA HISTORY MELDS WITH MODERNDAY WINE TASTING ROOMS, ART GALLERIES AND UPSCALE SHOPS IN THIS PICTURE-PERFECT COUNTRY TOWN in the northeast part of the valley. Centered by an iconic WWI memorial flagpole monument, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors. In the early 1860s, the town was a welcome stagecoach stop on the route that ran from San Francisco to San Diego. County Historical Landmark Mattei’s Tavern, which still stands today, was built in 1887 to house and feed those passengers. Don’t be deceived by the Victorian vibe because behind the historic doors the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and gourmet dining. And then there’s the world-class wine tasting. Sip local vintages at a tasting room - choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area. Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating of visitors.

LOS OLIVOS JAZZ AND OLIVE FESTIVAL

Spend a Saturday afternoon tasting wine from 30 local wineries, listening to world-class, professional jazz musicians, and sampling 30 different olive-themed dishes prepared by local chefs. This tasty event is hosted by the Rotary Club every June in Lavinia Campbell Park.

ANNUAL DAY IN THE COUNTRY

Santa Ynez Valley Style is unique in the sense that it is a combination of vacation retreat and wine country ease with a western/equestrian twist. It’s a whole lot of amazing wrapped into one of the most beautiful valleys on the central coast.

My family owned Johnson's For Children clothing store, so I grew up in retail. There I learned the ins and outs of the retail world. Because children’s clothing was second nature to me, I first opened Sandbox Kids in 2009 and a few years later developed the women’s concept, which became Wildflower Women.

I do all the buying for the stores and am very selective regarding what I bring in. As a personal stylist, I know how to edit each collection to include a wide array of women. I typically go for the classics and timelessearth tones, simple cuts and timeless fits and take pride in offering quality and value in every item. Buellton is home to a variety of unique festivals and events. One of the most popular is the BUELLTON BREW FEST. Guests are invited to sample craft beer from over 40 brewers, enjoy a variety of food options, live music, and games. This 21 and over event takes place on May 5 at River View Park.

BUELLTON WINE AND CHILI FEST: Some of the best Valley chefs compete in a chili cook-off and salsa competition. WE ASKED local hiking expert and founder of Santa Barbara County Hikers, Curt Cragg, to share one of his favorites hikes. Lover’s Loop Trail is part of the Midland Schools Trail system and rewards with lovely grass and oakstudded hillsides and views. Hikers can do a small portion of this trail for a leisurely hike or the entire loop for a more challenging trek. The stats - Distance - 0.8 miles for the easy short loop; a moderate 1.2 miles to end of meadow; 2.7 miles across and down to the creek; a moderately strenuous 3.65 miles for the entire loop. BRIEF HISTORY OF WINE IN THE SYV

Horses and cattle were once the main cash crops of the Santa Ynez Valley, a legacy of the Spanish rancho days. But when visionary winemakers began planting vinifera and exploring the area’s varied terrain in the 1970s, a sea of change was quickly afoot. Oh sure, you can still see thoroughbred horses running in green pastures here, as well as lavender farms and some of the best organic produce anywhere. But these days, wine is king - and queen and president and prime minister, too. Vines flourish from the valley floor to mountainside plots 1,500 feet above it. Tasting rooms and restaurants in the towns of Santa Ynez, Solvang, Los Olivos, Ballard, Buellton, and Los Alamos attract visitors from around the world, who come to taste spectacular wines and enjoy this gorgeous part of the planet.

1989: Artist Seburn Zorthian paints the first Buttonwood label. She has painted every one since.

1993: On Thanksgiving a year after their tiny inaugural harvest of grapes from Viognier vines planted accidentally on their land, the Sunstone family enjoys their first bottle of estate wine.

1999: The Saarloos family tore out the existing apple orchard and planted their first vines, 14 acres of Syrah.

Pierre Lafond opens Santa Barbara Winery, the first winery since Prohibition.

Central Valley grower Louis Lucas partners with Al Gagnon and Dale Hampton to establish the 800-acre Tepusquet Vineyard, one of the earliest in the region.

UC Davis horticulturalists Uriel Nielson and Bill De Mattei establish the county’s first commercial vinifera vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. Ten years later, major Northern California producers are purchasing their Chardonnay grapes.

2006: Angela Soleno discovers that wine takes her mind off a recent personal hardship. After intense cramming, she lands a job as project manager at Consilience, the first step to becoming the winemaker-owner of Turiya wines.

LAY OF THE LAND

Most mountain ranges run in a north-south direction, but the coastal San Raphael and Santa Ynez mountains that form the Santa Ynez Valley and the greater Santa Barbara County wine region run east to west. As such, they act like a funnel for cool air and fog from the Pacific Ocean, creating myriad micro-climates at various elevations suitable for a wide range of varietal grapes. Richard Sanford, who discovered that the Santa Rita Hills were ideally suited for Pinot Noir, becomes the only Santa Barbara County winemaker to be inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame in Napa.

The wine-centric romantic comedy Sideways puts Santa Barbara wine country on the map for millions and gives local Pinot Noirs, in particular, their place in the Hollywood sun.

BUTTONWOOD WINERY & VINEYARD

A 50-year-old family-run organic farm, 106 acres of grapes and estate-grown varietals made from them - that’s Buttonwood Winery & Vineyard, a relaxing place that has long been operating according to the vision of the late Betty Williams, who purchased the property in 1968 and worked the land according to “good practices for people, animals and the earth.” They have a great tasting room and outside garden seating areas, and note that wine club members get first crack at specialty wines and events, including seasonal chefs’ farm dinners, the bi-annual crawfish boil in May, the July Rockin’ our Roots concert, and plenty of other draws that will make you want to do as they suggest at the farm and “Come on in.”

With deep roots in one of Missouri’s oldest vineyards, Jim and Mary Dierberg moved west to grow the European grape varieties they love. Now, with Dierberg Vineyard in the cool Santa Maria AVA and Drum Canyon Vineyard in the adjacent nearly-as-cool Sta. Rita Hills AVA (where vineyards rise 400 feet above their tasting room), the Dierbergs have roots in some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay terroir in the nation. Add Star Lane Vineyard in the warmer Happy Canyon AVA, and they also produce great Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc. Pursuing a “250-year” plan, they are dedicated to providing careful stewardship of the land, working with winemaker Tyler Thomas to pursue the fullest expression of grapes and terroir, and bottling the results proudly under the Dierberg and Star Lane labels. dierbergvineyard.com

The Kalyra Winery is for people who like their wine with a generous helping of friends and fun. With Australian expat winemaker Mike Brown at the helm, the “She’ll be right,” attitude pervades the property. “There’s a laid-back feeling to the tasting room,” says RaeLynn Milley. “If you’re new to wine, this is a great place to learn about it. We’re not uptight. You can bring your dog and your kids, hang out all day and unplug from the world.” Kalyra has events going all the time. The summer-night film series on the lawn always end with Sideways, the romantic comedy that featured the bar at Kalyra. There are kids’ movies, too. In a world where bedrock values can be hard to find, Saarloos + Sons offers a welcoming embrace of what matters. “Honor + Prepare” is their motto. It refers to honoring the past, the family (three generations here so far), the future, the land, hard work, well-made wine, and even failure when it comes along. What started as a Fuji apple farm is now planted with 100,000 vines, hand picked every harvest. The resulting wines - terroir-driven, 100-percent estate grown, including ports and distinctive special occasion wines - are available at the tasting room on Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. SANTA MARIA VALLEY

AVA (1981): Fog and wind keep temperatures cool, especially in the western part of this near-coast AVA, Santa Barbara’s first. Known for cool-weather-loving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it also produces excellent Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Franc.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA (1983): The largest AVA in SB County contains four sub-AVAs. Predominantly east-west oriented, it is cut by hills that produce numerous microclimates. World-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow in the cooler western part of the AVA, while Rhône and Bordeaux varieties thrive in the warmer, eastern areas.

STA. RITA HILLS AVA (2001):

The odd spelling of “Saint” is the result of a settlement involving a Chilean AVA of the same name. Slightly warmer than the adjacent Santa Maria AVA. This is Pinot Noir country, which makes up nearly two-thirds of the vineyard acreage, followed by Chardonnay.

HAPPY CANYON AVA (2009):

The most eastern growing region is also the warmest, with hills reducing ocean breezes and fog. Cabernet Sauvignon and warm-weather styles of Sauvignon Blanc predominate, with extensive plantings of Syrah as well.

BALLARD CANYON AVA (2013): Windy, foggy, and with wildly shifting temperatures, Ballard Canyon occupies a middle ground between the coolest and warmest parts of the valley. The Rhône grape Syrah rules here, accounting for more than half the planted acreage, and local Syrahs are every bit the equal of the French counterparts.

LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT AVA (2016): Containing the towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez. Generally lower in elevation and less precipitous than other SB County AVAs, its moderate climate and microclimates allow a range of grapes to thrive, including Italian and Spanish varieties.

Standing Sun Wines owner John Wright likes it when people gather over wine, art and music, so he offers all three at his winery in a burgeoning industrial corner of Buellton. “I want people to have an experience,” he says. “Wine is more than what’s in the glass. It’s a process, and here you can watch production while tasting wine.” Or while listening to bands Wright brings in from around the country. Ticket prices are reasonable, food trucks provide the grinds, and the stage is a professional setup amid the barrels. You can also sip while checking out equally wide-ranging art in the gallery; October featured works by Felipe Molina, album cover artist for Counting Crows. Got kids? Dogs? Bring ’em. Sunstone Winery has been a valley landmark since the Rice family planted their first organic vineyard in 1990. It has one of only three underground cellaring caves in the valley. Its villa was built with 85-percent reclaimed materials, including French limestone from the 18th and 19th centuries. “There is a sense of authenticity here,” says Anna Rice. “People feel a sense of calm and escape, of being transported.” The winemaking team focuses on perfecting estate varietals Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, plus Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from vineyards closer to the ocean in the Santa Maria and Sta. Rita Hills AVAs. A great way to enjoy the results is at a private tasting experience with a wine host, maybe in the cave or the lavender courtyard. In a co-op winemaking space in Lompoc, Angela Soleno turns fine local grapes into exquisite smallbatch Bordeaux and other red blends. Because this dynamo single mom is essentially a one-woman company, the tasting room is open only on weekends from 11-6 or by appointment. She offers private winemaker-led barrel tastings, a Library Tasting Experience, and Winemaker for a Day, or the “Blending and Bottling Boot Camp.” Guests take wine from the barrel, put it into vials and make their own blends. “It can be casual and fun, or they can dig in and learn,” she says. “I enjoy seeing them understand what they’re looking for and how to taste properly.” Her wines are a cut above. She uses no artificial tannins or fining agents and doesn’t release them for at least five years. This is quality - deep, red and rich. turiyawines.com

“Something for everyone” could be the motto at the Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang, which the Santa Ynez Valley News Press voted the Best Wine Tasting in the valley three years running. You’ll find wines from local vintners to sip by the glass or in flights (all white, all red, as focused as you’d like). There’s also a beer flight, plus high-end imports. Or try one of their custom shrub cocktails. These unique vinegar-based mixers, such as the peach-jalapeño shrub or strawberry-ginger shrub, are served with wine-based spirits and topped off with club soda for a refreshing and unique take on the classic cocktail. “No one else in the valley makes these,” says co-owner Susan Williams. FROM CALIFORNIA HEAT IN SOLVANG TO ARCTIC COLD ON THE NORTH POLES

When Danish adventurer and Solvang resident René Gross Kærskov decided to parachute out of a helicopter over the exact North Pole in 2008 in his own fundraising event to help the struggling polar bears, it started an adventure into a whole new dimension of TIME. Through connections of a wildlife photographer, Kærskov arranged with the Russians, who operate a camp on the Arctic ice, to fly him up to the camp and then continue by helicopter to the North Pole.

ENJOY THEATER UNDER THE STARS

Professional theatre has been a part of Central Coast life for over five decades thanks to PCPA – Pacific Conservatory Theatre and the myriad of performing arts enthusiasts who continue to support the arts.

PCPA was founded in 1964, and the Marian Theater was built in Santa Maria in 1968. Three years later, the company was invited by Roger Neilsen of the Solvang Businessmen’s Association to stage a production of Hamlet in Solvang’s Hans Christian Andersen Park. It played to sold out performances that year, and the next.

Support to establish a permanent theatre in the valley quickly grew. Nelisen assembled a passionate committee consisting of Earl Petersen, Royce Lewellyn, Erling and Sue Pohls, Johannes Jaeger, John and Jan Severson, Vince Evans, together with the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association and many others, they began to lay the foundation for the Festival Theater.

This summer will mark the 44th season of PCPA’s professional performances in this beautiful open-air theatre with productions of the epic new musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the wacky comedy by Christopher Durang, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the sparkling musical inspired by the music of ABBA, Mamma Mia!, and for the season closer, the brilliant and inventive Arcadia by Tom Stoppard.
