Downtown Syracuse is a vibrant mix of history, culture, and modern energy, with three distinct squares—each offering its own unique character and charm.
Once the city’s main trading hub along the Erie Canal, Clinton Square remains a gathering place for festivals , concerts , and seasonal fun . In summer, it hosts food and music events, while winter transforms it into a picturesque ice-skating rink surrounded by historic architecture. The Soldiers & Sailors Monument stands as a tribute to Syracuse’s rich past, creating a beautiful blend of history and community.
With cobblestone charm and 19th-century buildings, Hanover Square is the city’s oldest commercial district, offering a more intimate, historic feel. Cozy pubs, and charming eateries line the streets, making it a favorite for a relaxed night out or a scenic lunch spot. The square’s timeless appeal and welcoming atmosphere give it an undeniable allure.
Armory Square:
The Trendy Hotspot
Known for its nightlife , dining , and entertainment , Armory Square is where business meets pleasure. Upscale restaurants, lively bars, and independent shops make it a go-to destination, whether you’re catching a show at the Landmark Theatre or exploring the MOST (Museum of Science & Technology). Day or night, the square is the perfect place for any urban adventure.
Known for its strong Irish heritage, Tipperary Hill, or ‘Tipp Hill,’ as the locals have dubbed it, is home to historic pubs, rich histories, and unique local attractions. The neighborhood hosts major events in February and March including Green Beer Sunday , and the annual Shamrock Run, a 4-mile hilly race through the entire neighborhood, making it an epicenter for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations. Take note of the only known upside down traffic light in the world situated on the main strip of Tipp hill – an ode to the early Irish settlers.
A family friendly trip to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will allow you to experience rare twin elephants, tigers, penguins, and even more diverse wildlife exhibits. Burnet Park offers a quick round of golf with scenic views of the city.
You will not go hungry in Tipp Hill. Delight in traditional Irish cuisine at Coleman’s Authentic Irish Pub , grab a famous Blarney Burger at The Blarney Stone (cash only), or enjoy a cocktail at Emerald Cocktail Kitchen , Syracuse’s first ever rooftop bar . Come for the views, stay for the brews.

The lake is the town’s heart, offering boat tours , kayaking , and stunning sunsets . Every summer, the Skaneateles Antique & Classic Boat Show showcases beautifully restored wooden boats, celebrating timeless lake culture. In winter, Dickens Christmas transforms the village into a festive wonderland with costumed carolers and holiday magic.
Despite its upscale feel, Skaneateles remains warm and welcoming. Whether you're sipping wine by the water, browsing artisan shops, or taking in a classic boat parade, this Finger Lakes gem is a perfect escape.
North of Syracuse, Clay, Cicero, Baldwinsville, and beyond offer a blend of suburban convenience and outdoor adventure. With easy city access and scenic escapes, this region is perfect for those who love both modern amenities and nature.
Baldwinsville, set along the Seneca River , is a hub for waterfront dining, boating, and live music at Paper Mill Island Cicero and Clay border Oneida Lake, a hotspot for fishing, boating, and lakeside relaxation. Beaver Lake Nature Center provides year-round hiking, birdwatching, and stunning scenery for you to explore.
As Onondaga County’s fastestgrowing area, NoCo balances scenic beauty with expanding communities. Whether you're sipping craft beer by the river, enjoying a Syracuse Boat Tour , or exploring the expansive nature trails, it’s where energy and tranquility meet.
Just south of Syracuse, the towns of Pompey, Tully, and LaFayette offer a scenic escape where rolling hills, vast farmlands, and small-town warmth create a timeless charm. This stretch of Onondaga County is known for its breathtaking countryside, winding backroads, and strong agricultural roots. In the fall, the hills come alive with vibrant foliage, drawing visitors to apple orchards , pumpkin patches , and cider mills .
LaFayette, the heart of apple country, is home to familyrun orchards and the beloved LaFayette Apple Festival , celebrating the region’s rich farming heritage. SoCo boasts pristine lakes and outdoor adventure, from hiking in Highland Forest or Morgan Hill State Forest to skiing and snowboarding at Song Mountain . Pompey, with the highest elevation in all of Onondaga County, offers panoramic views that stretch for miles, making it a perfect spot for scenic drives, countryside getaways, and a cold pint at Heritage Hill Brewhouse .
Life moves at a gentler pace here, but the community’s deeprooted traditions and love for the land make it a special place to explore. Whether you're picking apples, hiking forest trails, or simply soaking in the view, SoCo offers an authentic slice of Upstate New York beauty.
FROM INDIGENOUS ROOTS TO MODERN RENAISSANCE
Long before Syracuse became a bustling city, this land was — and still is — the ancestral home of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. This powerful alliance of six Indigenous Nations — the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, Cayuga, and Tuscarora — has lived here for more than 13,000 years. The Onondaga Nation, often called the “capital” of the Confederacy, remains just south of present-day Syracuse, where the Grand Council of Chiefs still meets.
The Haudenosaunee helped lay the foundation for American democracy, inspired the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and shaped traditions that continue today. They introduced lacrosse as a sacred game, modeled governance systems still studied worldwide, and used peace ceremonies that gave rise to phrases like “bury the hatchet.”
European settlers first arrived in the mid-1600s, with French Jesuit missionaries among them. In the years following the American Revolution, more settlers moved into the area. Despite centuries of pressure, the Haudenosaunee Nations continue to uphold their sovereignty and cultural traditions on the land that has always been — and remains — theirs.
In 1819, the growing village along Onondaga Lake was named Syracuse, after the Italian city of Siracusa. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 turned Syracuse into a boom town, connecting it to major trade routes and fueling its growth as a key center for salt production. The city also played a courageous role in the Underground Railroad, where churches and citizens provided refuge for freedom seekers heading north.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Syracuse evolved into a center of manufacturing, innovation, and culture through production of groundbreaking inventions like the Brannock Device, the 24-second shot clock, and advancements in synthetic penicillin. Today, Syracuse continues to blend its deep history with innovation by revitalizing its communities with green initiatives, and cutting-edge healthcare, alongside a thriving arts and technology scene.

Much like selecting the perfect wine for a meal, effect pairing involves choosing cannabis products that complement your activities. Looking to stay active and engaged? A stimulating sativa can enhance a morning hike at Baltimore Woods or an afternoon of exploring Downtown Syracuse’s arts and culture scene. Prefer to unwind? A soothing indica can be the perfect companion to an evening watching the sunset or a quiet night at your hotel spa. Local dispensaries, like TJ’s Cannabis Company , Joe’s Buds , and Raven’s Joint , offer expert guidance to help visitors find the right product to match their plans.
Integrating cannabis into your wellness routine can enhance relaxation and rejuvenation. A cannabis-based wellness spa is coming soon to Skaneateles, promising a holistic approach to well-being with treatments incorporating cannabis-infused oils, balms, and therapeutic services. This fusion of traditional spa experiences with the benefits of cannabinoids offers a unique way to unwind.
Visit Syracuse encourages users to consume responsibly and follow New York State cannabis regulations. Public consumption laws apply, and users should ensure they enjoy cannabis in designated areas. Always purchase from licensed dispensaries and consume responsibly.
