"I love Formby Beach. I love being beside the seaside and I love that it is all just a short train ride away."
There’s nothing more relaxing than feeling our toes sinking into the sand while walking along the edge of the water and listening to the sound of the waves lapping at the shore. It’s our happy place.
4
Southport Beach is a great place to be beside, for dog-walks, families and those just wanting some refreshing sea air and to feel the freedom of the outdoors.
Thrill seekers can head over to the Ainsdale Beach (International Blue Flag) and try any combination of kite surfing, wind surfing or extreme kite flying.
Fun fact
Besides the seaside… the pine woods around Formby Point are home to one of England’s last remaining colonies of native red squirrels. Pop along and see if you can spot one!

Love GOOD TIM ES
We have a fantastic selection of spots to eat, drink, chat and catch up. Ranging from traditional pubs and restaurants, to relaxed cafés and bars, the town has plenty of places to choose from.
Fine cuisine from all around the world, healthy salads, everyone’s favourite pizza and pasta, traditional pub food and not forgetting the proper seaside fish and chips, the town has all bases covered.
"I love laughing with friends over dinner, I love catching up over drinks, and I love making plans."
6
There’s enough choice for the whole family, or your most picky friend, to find somewhere that everyone can feel the joy of a great meal in a great place.
And there are enough proper pubs and cool bars for everyone to find the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink or a post-dinner nightcap.
If informal dining and cool street food is your thing, then make a beeline for Southport Market. Inside the spectacular Victorian ironwork of the old market is a wide selection of food stalls to excite the most jaded taste buds - and it’s perfect for families and big groups as everyone can choose from a different menu and still eat together.
Fun fact
Lovely for chatting, getting together and making plans for the rest of your dayor the rest of your stay!
If you like to get together over a pint or two, then our area has several pubs featured in the Good Beer Guide. There are some very cool micropubs, squeeze yourself in and sample something new.

Plenty to entertain

"I love laughing, I love larking around at crazy golf, and I love seeing my family enjoy a proper seaside day out."
Grab a picnic and head to King’s Gardens. It’s full of beautiful Victorian architecture, with its Grade II listed shelters and ornate Venetian Bridge. There’s a community garden area with fountain, and nine cast iron shelters to give you a bit of shade on a hot day, as well as plenty of flatter land to enjoy a stroll.
Or for the more energetic types looking to entertain their little ones, there’s a children’s play area and crazy golf to enjoy.
Marine Lake is a brilliant place for family fun. Hire a pedalo if you’re keen to get your legs moving, or maybe a power boat if you’re feeling like a thrill – whatever your speed, messing about on the lake is always fun in spring and summer.
This summer, we’re hugely looking forward to visiting the newly refurbished (and old favourite!) Splash World.
A place for all the family to have fun, whatever the weather.
Fun fact
Model villages are a popular seaside attraction - but Southport didn’t have one until the family owned and designed Model Railway Village opened in 1996. It is one of the longest outdoor railway displays in the country.

Southport has an amazing selection of independent shops and businesses, from boutique clothes shops to galleries and bookshops. There’s something special about finding somewhere new to browse and there is plenty new to find in our town.
The Victorian splendour of Lord Street is a paradise for shoppers, with a cluster of independent storesand big-name favourites - under the ornate cast iron canopies. There is much more to Southport than the main street, with atmospheric arcades and parades of smaller shops to explore.
The glass domed grandeur of Wayfarer’s Arcade is a must, with its selection of gift shops, cafés, jewellers, and barbers. Quaint Wesley Street is a slice of proper seaside life, with pastel painted shops including a cake shop, café, children’s clothing, walking stick shop and gift shop.

Happiness
"I love finding something special, I love exploring somewhere quirky and I love escaping the everyday."
If it’s vintage gems you’re after then don’t miss the Royal and Cambridge Arcades, both great places to browse for something unexpected. Or head to the delightful village feel of Churchtown’s Botanic Road, an independent shopper’s delight with plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat.
If the weather isn’t quite up to long exploration, Southport also has shopping destinations with easy parking - Central 12 and Ocean Plaza. Ocean Plaza has places to eat and be entertained as well, making it a good rainy-day spot.
Fun fact
The Grade II listed Wayfarer’s Arcade is on its third name, having been built as Leyland Arcade and being Burton Arcade for a period in the 1960s. In addition to the shops and cafés it used to house a tropical aquarium.

Spill TH E TEA
We’ve always got time for a good gossip over a proper cuppa. Coffee lovers know it’s always better when made by a barista, or for those with a sweet tooth, there’s nothing better than getting your hands around a hot chocolate.
Southport is full of all the right cafés for you to enjoy.
There are few things more traditional than a stop for a drink in a proper old tea shop and Southport has several to choose from.
They are the perfect spot to take the weight off your feet, catch up with friends and family and soak in the old-world charm.
"I love a proper teapot, I love meeting for a natter, and I love that first bite of cake."
In the winter sit inside and watch the world go by, in the summer relax in the shade and enjoy your break al fresco.
If your tastes are more contemporary, Southport has a wide range of cool modern coffee shops, from the internationally familiar to boutique and unique. Step in, smell the coffee, and find the perfect little snack or light lunch for everyone to enjoy.
When it’s cold and blustery grab a hot chocolate to go. Take it out on the prom or the Pier and enjoy watching the sea while being warmed from the inside out!
Fun fact
Your teabags may have come into the UK from nearby Liverpool Docks - over 20 million a year are still unloaded here. Tea was one of the most important early products driving the development of the famed Victorian dock complex.

It is 25,000 steps to walk the full length of the Pier and back again. And go on… you deserve to grab that bag of tasty salty fish and chips when you finish!
Don’t forget to enjoy the telescopes, where you can view wildlife as you stroll, or view on TV screens in the Pier Pavilion.
Fun fact
Southport Pier used to attract huge crowds as it hosted the daredevil professors who would jump from the top of the arches into small pools of water below. These days, we prefer to use our Pier to admire the glorious sunsets, get our steps in and watch the world go by.

happy plac e
A lover of Southport writes, "My earliest seaside memories are of visiting Southport in the summer holidays – complete with the erratic British summer weather, bumpy donkey rides and giggling away at my little sister’s petrified screams at the Punch and Judy show.
I look back on Southport in the 80s with huge fondness – just being beside the seaside was enough to bring a smile to my face.
"I love hearing seagulls calling and the waves lapping at the shore, I love feeling the sun on my face, and I love the noises of the arcades."
My

I could spend hours in the Pier Pavilion, on the various penny slot machines, I loved the views from Southport Pier and peering out to sea to try and spot pirate ships with my father, and I always loved a trip to Southport Pleasureland and would ride on the log flume until I was soaked right through to my socks!
The simplest pleasures can be found near the seaside too, my dog lolloping along in Formby Woods, doing roly polys down the sand dunes (I even found £20 in one of the dunes once!).
Since having children of my own, I have been rediscovering the pleasures of the coast close to home."
There’s nothing quite so nostalgic as that moment your children excitedly shout, ‘Daddy I can see the sea!’

Ainsdale Beach is great for extreme kite activities, including kite buggies and land boards, as well as the more familiar kite surfing in the sea.

Southport is a great place for a golf breakwe’re not known as the golf capital of England for nothing!
We’ve got the highest concentration of championship links in the UK, with 20 courses in the vicinity.
The jewel in the crown must be Royal Birkdale, the scene of memorable Open battles up the final fairway towards the iconic art deco clubhouse.
Other courses in the area include Formby, Hesketh, Hillside, Southport & Ainsdale, West Lancashire, Formby Ladies, and Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa.
We’re the perfect location for making a few days of it to properly explore the courses, or for just sneaking in a quick 18 holes while the rest of the family is at the beach - either works for us.

Royal Birkdale has held The Open Championship 10 times - from 1954 to 2017, the Women’s Open six times and the Ryder Cup twice. Last time the Open was played there, a 62 was scored in one round - perhaps a challenge for a visit?

For culture Vu ltu r es
We have history to spare in Southport and there’s something to learn or see around every corner.
The Atkinson is a great place to start with a museum, gallery, and
performance spaces - the story of the Duke with vision, triumph, tragedy and shipwreck, and the landowners who gave their names to Lord Street, Hesketh Park, Scarisbrick Avenue, and the Bold Hotel.
Once you’re done exploring you can take time to rest in the café or perhaps have a potter in the museum shop.

The development of the town attracted Victorians by the trainload, and we can follow in their footsteps today - most notably on our historic Pier, one of the longest in England. Great for strolling along and getting your steps up!
