Southport has plenty to offer if you’re looking for places to explore, whatever your budget.
The great
outdoors You can get back to nature in amazing outdoor spaces, soak up some summer colour in our delightful parks and gardens, or get lost in the woods with our four-legged friends and favourite red squirrels. Visit Formby Woods if you’re hoping to catch a sight of our rare red squirrels.
The woods are also a great place to play hide and seek, or to access Formby Beach.
Explore on foot on some of our beautiful paths, with walking routes for all ages, and legs. Or get onto two wheels with one of our 13 themed cycling routes. Or check out Martin Mere where your little ones can get lost in the nature of the wetlands.
If dunes are your thing, then head for Ainsdale and Birkdale Sandhills Nature Reserve - one of the largest expanses of dunes in the UK. There are trails to explore and a discovery centre at Ainsdale with information on all the walks and wildlife. The dunes are home to rare wildflowers, lizards, and the noisy Natterjack Toad. For a change of scenery, Windmill Animal Farm (a Lancashire Tourism Awards finalist 2023), is a great day out for all the family. Where your little ones can meet the farmyard animals, enjoy the indoor soft play, or try bottle feeding the younger animals. Or perhaps take your little ones to Farmer Ted’s Farm Park, where the facilities include a large barn, outdoor play area, and farm animals to see. There’s also a delicious farm shop full of local produce, tasty open sandwiches and fresh coffee for the adults to stop and take a break.

A hidden gem When you’re next in town, try Wesley Street with the terrace of pastel-coloured shops and cafés, it’s got real vintage seaside town vibes.

Looking for ways to spend those summer holidays? Southport is the perfect spot for a day out.

King’s Gardens, where there’s an adventure playground for your little ones to let off some steam, crazy golf, a miniature railway, and beautiful gardens, with plenty of flat walking spaces to make it suitable for all. The Grade II listed shelters and ornate Venetian
Southport’s Model Railway Village is also a delight to explore. You can watch the model trains chug around the miniature world and weave between the little buildings. There’s also a café and toilets. If your kids have lots of energy, head over to Splash World. You can relax with a cuppa and view, or if you’re feeling adventurous, get your swimsuits on and be a big kid again on the slide…woooooo splash!
Or if you’re an outdoorsy family, hop on your bikes and explore Southport and the surrounding coastal paths. There’s no better way to see the area and it's great for the environment too! You can even stop somewhere beautiful for a picnic or perhaps head into town for an ice cream or slice (or two) of cake.

A hidden gem Bridge also make it a beautiful spot to enjoy a picnic or ice cream. Just a short walk away, Southport Marine Lake is a great place for a funfilled day. Hire a pedalo to keep you fit for summer, or soak up the sun while enjoying the relaxing ride on one of the motor boats.

TO HEAVEN Southport is a great place for golf - we’re not known as the golf capital of England for nothing! There’s no better place to be rewarded with your first par, birdie, or eagle.
Golf is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family, so explore what Southport has to offer, you won’t be disappointed. We’ve got the highest concentration of championship links in the UK, with 20 courses in the vicinity.

Royal Birkdale is one of the finest in the UK and the scene of more than 10 memorable Open battles. You can book tee times between May October, just check out their website for further info and book in early to avoid disappointment. Other fine courses in the area include Formby Golf Club, Hesketh, Hillside,
Southport & Ainsdale, West Lancashire, and Formby Ladies. Or why not try Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa where you can enjoy a round or two of golf as part of a relaxing spa weekend.
A hidden gem Southport is the perfect location for making a few days of it to properly explore the courses, or for just sneaking in a quick 18 holes while the rest of the family is at the beach - either works!

THE TEA When you’re looking for places to eat and drink in the daytime, Southport has plenty of coffee shops, tearooms and cafés to choose from.

When it comes to options for a beautiful vintage tea room, you’re spoilt for choice, there’s Nostalgia Tea Rooms and Vintage Tea Rooms, to name a few. They’re the perfect spot to rest your feet, catch up with friends and family, and soak in some nostalgic charm. If you’re working from home but would rather spend your day in a lovely coffee shop instead, with
that special kind of pickme-up that is only helped by a proper Barista, we’ve got lots to choose from in Southport. Try Lords Café Bar, or Westminster Tea Rooms. Southport is full of hidden gems for coffee lovers.
If you’re feeling a little on the hungry side, plenty of the cafés and bistros offer lots of scrummy food options for breakfast and lunch. Why not take a book and have a mindful moment in the middle of your day. Or meet up with an old friend in our much-loved town and have a bit of a catch up. There’s always time for some good gossip over a slice of cake… If there’s a big group of you, don’t forget to consider stopping by Southport Market. Our street food market has plenty of options to serve even the fussiest of eaters, and there’s always a lovely atmosphere too.

If you’re looking for something to do at the weekend, or trying to keep the costs down during the holidays, Southport has plenty of things to do, whatever your budget!

DAYS|OUT The beach is a great place to start and we have plenty to delight you, grab a bucket and spade, a blanket, and enjoy. Southport Beach has stunning sunset views and is perfect for a coastal run. On the edge of Formby Woods hides the lovely sandy Formby Beach, or there’s the sand dunes at Ainsdale, where you can walk your dogs or take a kite on a windy day.
Crosby Beach is well worth a visit to view the Antony Gormley sculptures and stop off at The Lake House café after. The Queen’s Jubilee Nature Trail is easy to reach from the town centre and is a great place to take a picnic as you try to spot local wildlife along the way. Or why not explore the beautiful Botanic Gardens, you can wander along the lakeside, or visit the yearround fernery and aviary.
King's Gardens is a great place to spend a fine day in Southport for free. With the ornate Venetian bridge, play park and colourful floral displays, step back into the good old days. Hesketh Park is one of the largest parks in Southport, featuring an American Garden, Clock Garden, Herbaceous Walk and much more. Or if you’re feeling active, head to RSPB Marshside to see the boxing hares during spring, nesting birds in the summer, and colourful water fowl in the winter.
You can enjoy Southport all year round, whatever your budget.

Southport has an amazing selection of shops, whether you’re travelling by train, bus, or car.

TO SHOP A couple of minutes walk from Southport Train Station is Marble Place undercover shopping centre – great for those rainy ‘British Summer’ days. Here there’s high street shops including TK Maxx, the Body Shop, beauty and mobile phone outlets.

Next to Southport Train Station, there’s C12 shopping park, where shops are open until 8pm on weekdays and you can find high street retailers, including Next, Costa, Boots, Mountain Warehouse and The Range. There are also 600 parking spaces available if you’re carrying enough to need your car boot space.
The Victorian splendour of Lord Street is a paradise for shoppers, with a cluster of independent stores and big-name favourites - under the ornate iron canopies. There is much more to Southport than the main street, with atmospheric arcades and parades of smaller shops to explore.
Or Wesley Street for a slice of proper seaside life, with its pastel painted shops where you can support local independents. Or the Royal Arcade, a great place for browsing for something unexpected.
If you want to combine shopping with some lunch, then M Park Ocean Plaza has a good choice of both shops and places to eat.

A proper flask of soup, a cosy jumper and walking hand in hand with your loved ones. There’s nowhere better than Southport’s 22 miles of coast for a good walk.
There’s little more magical than a Southport Christmas. Sparkling lights, grottos galore and plenty of places to get a hot drink and last-minute Christmas shopping.

Nights out The Atkinson always has plenty to offer, there’s the autumn Comedy Festival that runs over two weeks, and plenty of shows and theatre nights out on offer all year round.

A hidden gem Set back from the road with a ceiling of twinkling fairy lights nestles the Bijou Cinema, showcasing classics old and new, it is the perfect place for a romantic evening out.

Viking Golf
Pleasureland
Viking Golf is an immersive 18-hole adventure golf course like no other. Prepare to be transported to another world as you play through the Viking-themed course.
Southport Pleasureland has so many rides for the kids to enjoy that it’s best to make a full day of it. Go in a group and take turns to be a big kid and go on the rides too!
The Atkinson
Marine Lake
The Atkinson is an easy place to spend at least an afternoon as you enjoy the collections and exhibitions before heading to one of their events or activities (on all year).
Marine Lake is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon racing around on the motorboats and such a great location to go on to a nearby park for a picnic.

Food and drink
Cycling in Southport is ideal to use up extra energy. Take the kids along the coastal paths, or perhaps through the woods before an afternoon picnic for a brief escape from the madness.
Come along to one of our independent bars and restaurants to take a break from cooking the tea, and have a drink too, you deserve it!

My happy place Chocolate Whirled is the perfect spot to pop in with your kids. They make Belgian chocolate lollipops, sweet cones, and even chocolate pizzas. There’s even a café where you can put your feet up.

If you like a town with heritage and interest, Southport Town Centre is packed with beautiful architecture and historic buildings.

Culture The War Memorial in London Square is Grade II listed and contains the names of over 1000 service men and women who gave their lives in the war.

Southport Pleasureland and Theme Park is full of plenty of exciting rides for children today, and was a firm favourite going back to the 1920s. When the wooden water chute ride went straight into the south side of Marine Lake. Finish off your day with a coffee and cake on Lord Street or in one of our many independent bars and restaurants. Or take a stroll in the footsteps of visitors of the past. The Victorians loved fun fairs and we still have a Victorian carousel on the promenade today, or enjoy the thrills of the helter skelter with your little ones.
Southport offers History and Heritage walks throughout the year. Or there’s also Heritage Open Days which will include family trails and exhibitions at The Atkinson.
