SAN LUIS OBISPO EDNA VALLEY ABOUT
In The Land of plenty, where sunshine and happiness go hand in hand, the city of San Luis Obispo is a mixture of endless hiking trails with panoramic views and a vibrant downtown filled with history, culture and culinary delights. But ask the locals and they’ll tell you it’s the people that make the place so special. Every day is a delight here, but on Thursday nights, don’t even think about skipping the Farmers Market, five blocks of entertainment, food and fun—enjoy a beverage and just taste for yourself. Nearby in Edna Valley is the hidden gem of the SLO CAL wine region, and it’s just five miles from the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy your own perfect picnic in the coastal breeze at over 30 charming tasting rooms just outside the city.
DID YOU KNOW?
Though to look today, it would be hard to notice that the city of San Luis Obispo once had sizeable Chinatown. Built in the 1870s, the settlement was once the largest Chinese community in the state of California. Though little of the original architecture still exists today, the history of the era lives on with the Ah Louis Store building, Chong’s Candy store (now a real estate office) and Mee Heng Low, a noodle house still serving off-the-charts chow mein.

DID YOU KNOW?
Officially, its name is “El Paso de Robles,” but most people call it Paso Robles. And, if you’re a local, it’s just “Paso.” When the early Spanish settlers happened upon this place, they gave it the obvious name: “The Pass of the Oaks,” but it wasn’t oaks or wine the region was famous for, it was its hot springs; even the Salinan Native Americans who inhabited the area called it “The Springs.” In the mid-1800s, tourists flocked here to experience “El Paso de Robles Hot and Cold Sulphur Springs and the Only Natural Mud Baths in the World.” Though the original bathhouse building is home to a candy shop today, you can still indulge yourself with a soak in the famous waters at three public locations throughout Paso Robles.

ATASCADERO TEMPLETON SANTA MARGARITA ABOUT
Be prepared for “cuteness overload” when you are in northern SLO CAL off Highway 101. It’s all laid back in rustic Santa Margarita, your destination for rugged outdoor adventures—ziplining anyone? And while you’re here, don’t bypass the Carrizo Plain National Monument, 250,000 scenic basins filled with wildlife and Native American history. Known for its exuberant community spirit, Atascadero has it all, from growing culinary and brewery options to many parks and trails, and there’s even a Malayan tiger residing at the local zoo. Pull up a blanket in one of the many parks in town and don’t forget to check the local calendar, because there’s always something happening in town. A blast into the past, Templeton prides itself in retaining its historic small-town charm amid rich agricultural land. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride, take in a parade, browse for the perfect treasure in the antique stores or enjoy a farm-fresh lunch. Anything is possible in The Land of open skies.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Cuesta Pass, or “The Grade,” as the locals say, is the hill that divides the southern and northern parts of SLO CAL. Originally a mountain pass used by the Chumash, the Spanish “discovered” this route and it would later become part of El Camino Real (The Royal Road), spanning 600 miles across California and ultimately connecting 21 missions. For fantastic views, hike along the historic Old Padre Trail or Old Stagecoach Road—you can even spot Morro Bay from the Cuesta Ridge Botanical Area. 14

NIPOMO ABOUT
There is so much to do and see in Nipomo, you may just have to stay awhile. Orchards, vineyards and colorful flower fields will welcome you in this small ranch town running along Highway 1. Getting in tune with nature is easy here. Locals swear by Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area, where the sounds of the ruffling reeds make for a relaxing stroll across the mile-long boardwalk. History buffs will not want to miss Dana Adobe for a taste of early Californian ranchero life. And if you are ready to tee off, try one of the top-notch golf courses in The Land of sweeping views.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Spanish translated the name, Nipomo, from the native Chumash, who called it “Nepomah,” meaning “foot of the hills.” It was here in 1837, with one of the first and largest of the Mexican land grants in San Luis Obispo County—a whopping 38,000 acres—that William G. Dana founded present-day Nipomo. Today you can visit his adobe that served as an important stop for travelers long ago.
ARROYO GRANDE ABOUT
Make way for play in Arroyo Grande, a dynamic destination full of fun, character and charm. Feel the warmth and friendliness of the community in the historic downtown village while shopping for antiques or getting your taste buds fired up. Stroll back in time as you traverse an ancient swinging footbridge or explore the iconic one-room schoolhouse, which looks much the same as it did more than a hundred years ago. Be sure to check out the Arroyo Grande Valley, where camping under the stars at Lopez Lake—the go-to spot for sailing, hiking, fishing, zip-lining and boating—is a must in The Land of adventure lovers. And did we mention all the oak trees?
DID YOU KNOW?
Named after the creek, derived from Spanish for “Big Stream,” Arroyo Grande was established in 1867. Due to its fertile land, the region became a prosperous ranch and farm community on the coast. But if you want to sound like a local, just call it “A.G.” and don’t be surprised by the famous roosters who call Olohan Alley their home.

Ragged Point will beckon you on your adventure, where the swirling ocean breeze and spectacular vistas welcome you to The Land of blue waters.

San Simeon, or “St. Simon,” was chosen by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst as the site for his extravagant, sprawling castle in the early 1900s. Encompassing 250,000 acres of ranchland, the architect, Julia Morgan, executed the tycoon’s vision of La Cuesta Encantada, “The Enchanted Hill.” Once home to the world’s largest private zoo, today you may get a glimpse of the zebras grazing the hills when you are cruising the coast.

And you can’t ignore the star attraction, Mission San Miguel Arcángel and its bells on your way to enjoy The Land of golden hills.
DID YOU KNOW?
High on a hill in nearby Shandon is the Serra Chapel, or Chapel Hill, as the locals know it. The chapel was built by former adviser to Ronald Reagan and longtime resident, Judge William Clark, in 1993. Though it’s a new construction, the small chapel has historic charm and is the backdrop to an annual classical music festival. Open to the public on Sundays, you won’t want to miss following the trail of grapevines on a short hike to the top for 360-degree remarkable views.
DID YOU KNOW?
Originally called “Slabtown,” the name Cambria (the Latin name for Wales) was chosen in 1870. Once host to one of the largest mines in the world, today Cambria is a slice of eclectic history. For a taste of the past, look no further than the Historic East Village, which boasts original architecture of the period. DID YOU KNOW?
The town of Avila Beach was established in the latter half of the 19th century and was named after one of its early Spanish residents, Miguel Ávila. Becoming a key shipping port for San Luis Obispo and other surrounding towns, Avila was home to several wharfs and a narrow-gauge railroad system designed and built by a prominent member of the community, John Harford. The Harford pier is one of the last piers that the public can drive (and eat) on. With more ships traveling into the area, a lighthouse was commissioned, and the Point San Luis Lighthouse was completed in 1890. Head out on a kayak or arrange a hike out to the landmark.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Oceano Dunes was a home to a group of free thinkers, mystics, artists, writers and hermits, who called themselves the “Dunites.” They firmly believed that the dunes were a focal point for creative energy, and legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille must have heard the call, because it was here that he built the largest movie set at the time for his epic, “The Ten Commandments.” DeMille dismantled the movie set and secretly buried it in the dunes, where it lay undiscovered until 1983. Classic California beach life beckons you in the seaside community of Pismo Beach and its northern neighborhood Shell Beach. Here in The Land of surf, families and couples alike enjoy surfing the day away, horseback riding on the shores or just strolling along the iconic Pismo Pier. A venture off the beach will uncover a quaint downtown filled with surf shops, wine tasting and Pismo’s famous clam chowder. In Shell Beach, beautiful sights and aquatic wonders are the gold “sandy” standard, so while relaxing on the warm banks, keep your eyes peeled for native seabird sightings and some of the most beautiful sunsets on the coast.
DID YOU KNOW?
It was 1881 when Pismo’s original wharf opened for business for commercial shipping. The wharf housed two warehouses and was a cost-saving venture conceived by the Meherin brothers of Arroyo Grande. A storm wiped out the wharf in 1905, and it wasn’t until 1924 that a new pier was built. The pier was much longer than the iconic pier we know today; cars would drive down the pier and Navy ships would dock at the end. Today, the pier, which was reconstructed in 1986, is a major attraction for visitors and residents alike.

• My family loves to be by the coast, so one of our casual favorites is Zorros in Shell Beach which offers amazing Mexican food, live music and outdoor patio seating with cozy blankets and heaters. As for coffee, Field Day in San Luis Obispo is an absolute favorite for great coffee and atmosphere.
• I like to grab a late breakfast at Dorn’s if we’re in the mood for spicy bloody mary’s. Or I’ll go to Hidden Kitchen in Cayucos, order blue corn waffles with eggs, avocado and maple bacon and then walk the dogs on the beach.
• I love to be outdoors enjoying the sunshine. Setting up on the beach at the end of Port San Luis in Avila is one of our family’s favorites. My kids boogie board and paddle board and it’s always bustling with wildlife. It’s such a gem on the Central Coast. • For out-of-town guests, I always suggest a trip up the coast to the Northern Beaches. Stopping in Cayucos for a beach walk, a visit to Harmony to see glass blowing and ceramics, followed by a hike out on the Harmony Headlands. • I am a big fan of the Secret Garden Tea shop; it’s such a treasure. I love to stop in and blend some teas with their knowledgeable staff. I always walk away feeling grounded and refreshed.

• My wife, Gibsey, and I have been hitting Black Hill above Morro Bay Golf Course for a quick afternoon workout. I mountain bike, she trail runs, and we pass each other on the mountain. From pine trees to ocean views, it’s always a fun ride. • I think the ultimate Central Coast experience is to go for a surf in Morro Bay, then eat a carne asada burrito from Taco de Mexico. • If I’m cruising around Morro Bay, I like to shop at Wavelengths for surf gear and Fiona Bleu Gallery for local art and jewelry for my wife. • I really love being in the vineyard, and the view from our new Thibido Winery in Paso Robles is insane. If I’m there in the evening checking irrigation, I can usually see out over all the Willow Creek District to the fog layer over the ocean.

• SLO Provisions is a favorite for breakfast—great quiche! Kin Coffee has a great vibe, and I love paella and cocktails at Luna Red.
• When we can get away from work, we enjoy meeting friends in the bar area of Korbel at Blue for drinks and some bites off the bar menu.
• Explore the majestic Montaña de Oro State Park. And for wine tasting, try the pinots and chardonnays in Edna Valley.
• There are so many wonderful things to see and do here on the Central Coast so it’s hard to narrow it down to one. A drive up the coast from San Luis Obispo up to see the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas is a great way to see some natural beauty.
• I am really digging the classic style of the food and cocktails at Nate’s on Marsh in SLO. I love to see an old property get a facelift and become a happening new spot with a polo club vibe. For a solid steak, a stiff drink and a side of authenticity, of course, Jocko’s in Nipomo is the place to be. The Range in Santa Margarita is a close second. For hifalutin gastronomy, Six Test Kitchen in Paso Robles is both delicious and entertaining. In Paso Robles, Les Petites Canailles has my number when it comes to French bistro cuisine and wine, and Flour House in SLO fires up my all-time favorite pizza. I’ve never had anything less than a spectacular meal at Ember in Arroyo Grande or Spoon Trade in Grover Beach, and for quick and casual, I go to Lincoln Deli in SLO for sandwiches—and pinball.
• San Luis Obispo Museum of Modern Art is working on some great murals around SLO and, to toot my own horn, R.A.C.E. Matters produces engaging events and content throughout the year! • You’ll find a fun night wherever Corazon 805 Tacos or the DJs from Soul Dust Productions are. • A Satellite of Love in SLO has an eclectic, funky vibe, and fun mix of vintage items and locally made crafts. • Indigene Cellars has a wonderful tasting room in Paso Robles. Super approachable. • The Center Studio and Boutique, formerly The Yoga Centre, is a family-owned, values-driven business that offers a variety of great yoga and fitness classes.
• The Performing Art Center is a local treasure. There are many outstanding performances in a variety of genres throughout the year. Being music lovers, we are particularly partial to performances by the SLO Symphony and Festival Mozaic. • We are so lucky to have so many fantastic wineries in our area. We tend to frequent the wineries in the Edna Valley because they’re closer to our home. Saucelito Canyon Winery has a great history and excellent wine. • Dinosaur Caves Park in Shell Beach is a beautiful place to walk and see beautiful views of the ocean.
• I have been attending the Great American Melodrama in Oceano since I was a kid, and it never, ever fails to entertain. So many people I talk to have no idea that a professional vaudeville theater exists here, which is crazy because the place is packed every time I go. Life’s Too Beautiful to Rush®

And if you’re looking to stretch your legs, take the History Center’s self-guided, interactive, 90-minute Walking Tour through downtown and stop by the nearby Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa for a tour and check out their gift shop while you’re at it. The outdoors are calling at Leaning Pines Arboretum where you can explore a 5-acre living laboratory located at Cal Poly. Not to be outdone, the Atascadero Sunken Gardens boasts of lush grounds and Italian renaissance architecture, while the Dallidet Adobe & Gardens is where Pierre Hypolite Dallidet, a 49er, sought to strike it rich during the Gold Rush.
Arts, located in Arroyo Grande, and the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly host everything from concerts to comedy at their aweinspiring venues. And speaking of awe-inspiring, be sure to stop at SLO Museum of Modern Art to take in eye-opening exhibits.

ICONIC EATS
If tasting your way through SLO CAL sounds like your kind of adventure, we have good news: From off-the-beaten-path eateries to breweries and bistros, there are amazing restaurants everywhere!
JEFFRYS WINE COUNTRY BBQ
NORTH
In Santa Margarita, check out the melt-in-yourmouth, 14-hour smoked brisket at The Range (facebook.com/therangerestaurantsm) or stop in Atascadero’s Sylvester’s Burgers (sylvestersburgers. com) on your birthday for a free burger (they have a location in Los Osos, too)—our favorite is called the “Hana Burger.” A little further north, and you’ve got McPhee’s Grill (mcpheesgrill.com) in Templeton where the ribeye gets top billing. Keep going and you’ll find Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ (jeffryswinecountrybbq.com) a no-nonsense establishment that is serious about its barbecue— our favorite dish is the Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese.
SOUTH COAST
ROBIN’S RESTAURANT
NORTH COAST
Start off in Los Osos for a quiet, back bay al fresco lunch at Noi’s 2nd Street Cafe (facebook.com/ noisthaitakeout) where the menu changes daily, but if green curry is on the stove, consider it your lucky day. Head to Morro Bay for as-fresh-as-it-gets fish and chips at Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant (morrobaydockside.com) where the owners go out and catch their own fish on their 38’ Bonnie Marietta. In Cayucos, look for Hidden Kitchen (hiddenkitchencalifornia.com) where it’s all about the blue corn tacos. For fine dining among the pines, Robin’s Restaurant (robinsrestaurant.com) in Cambria is the place to be. The braised short ribs are the thing to order. Further down the winding road, you will find a restaurant that is worthy of the breathtaking views at the Ragged Point Inn & Resort (raggedpointinn.com/ restaurant) where the to-die-for duck is a paired with a side that could stand on its own, the pork belly sweet potato hash.
Start off in downtown San Luis Obispo for a classic Tri-Tip sandwich on the patio at a Firestone Grill (firestonegrill.com) or head toward the water and look for De Palo & Sons (depaloandsons.com), a little Italian grocery store with a killer deli counter that includes a can’t miss selection of antipasto. Afterward, find the line of customers stretching down Pomeroy Avenue in Pismo and you’ll know you’ve arrived at Splash Café (splashcafe.com). Be sure to get their clam chowder in a bread bowl with seafood topping. Next up is The Spoon Trade (thespoontrade.com) in Grover Beach where comfort food is taken upscale—you’ll never think the same way about meatloaf. Find classic 1950s American fare within an actual train car in Oceano where Rock and Roll Diner (rockandrolldiner.com) is serving up $3 beers and zucchini sticks during its happy hour. In Arroyo Grande, Rooster Creek Tavern (roostercreektavern.com) is always a good idea, especially when dinner starts off with their red beet salad. Cap it all off with a drink by the bay on Mersea’s (merseas.com) dockside patio.

NIGHTLIFE Dig a little deeper to find the Central Coast offers as much fun after sundown as it does during sunup. Consider these ideas to jumpstart your evening: tee off at Dairy Creek Top Tracer Golf, take in a late-night bite at Eureka Burger or Woodstock’s Pizza, or head over to Sidecar for a curated cocktail, or find fun at an area escape room, bowling alley or ax-throwing venue.
EXPERIENCE
None other than The New York Times ranked Light at Sensorio (sensoriopaso.com) as #6 on its “50 Places to Visit in 2020” list. The cold, nutrient-rich waters of Morro Bay are home to a local delicacy, Pacific gold oysters. And the Morro Bay Oyster Company (morrobayoysters.com) knows how to sustain and harvest them. Their bounty can be found in fine restaurants throughout SLO CAL, but they also sell a cold-packaged kit online, as well as a complete shucking kit and sauces, which makes for a great treat at home, but also as the perfect gift for the foodie in your life.
FAMILY NIGHT SAVOR
At the south end of San Luis Obispo, near the airport, you will find SLO Brew Rock (slobrew.com/the-rock). The brewery is a long-time SLO CAL staple, drawing its name from both from its rocking music venue, and the geological feature that makes this venue so iconic. While the surrounding landscape is comprised of flat pavement, seemingly out of nowhere appears a mountainous rock that appears to be growing straight out of the brewery itself. It’s the perfect place to meet with friends and family because the brewery has something for everyone; cornhole, boardgames, fire pits, and dancing. 70

THE CEN TER O F CALIFORNIA’S CENTRAL COAST
SLO CAL WINE REGION With more than 250 wineries split between two distinct growing regions—Paso Robles to the north and San Luis Obispo to the south— SLO CAL is a wine tasting wonderland. And there is no better place to learn the basics about wine—and how to enjoy it like the pros and sip with confidence—than right here in San Luis Obispo County. The first and most important item on the list is a funny-looking, little French word: terroir. It’s derived from the same root word as “terrain,” which means “of the earth,” and pronounced like “tare-wah.” In the simplest terms, it describes the total environment within which the grapes are grown, such as the soils, the terrain, and the climate. So, as we begin our journey through the SLO CAL wine tasting region, let’s take it from the top with terroir: Paso Robles, called “cab country,” as in cabernet sauvignon, has a climate that is warm and dry while San Luis Obispo runs a bit cool and damp, which means chardonnay reigns supreme.
UPON ARRIVAL Tasting rooms are where you allow your senses to come alive. When tasting wine and choosing your favorite, there’s no right or wrong; it’s totally subjective and up to you. The key is to have fun with it, keep an open mind, and know that finding your new favorite wine and your new favorite winery can be lifechanging. Well, that might be overstating it a bit—but maybe not. Let’s dive in, shall we? First, take a good look. Swirl the wine and study it as it circles the glass. See it from different perspectives and in different light. Hold the glass out, tilt it to the side, bring it back in. Take note of the color—it can help you determine the age of the wine, as older wine becomes more transparent, and the color will fade. Another detail you might notice are wine tears, often called legs, which appear as cascading droplets when you swirl your wine around or after you’ve taken a sip.
BOOKER WINERY While theories abound about what legs can tell you, including the quality of wine, physicists attribute the phenomenon to the Gibbs-Marangoni effect. Simply put, the combination of water and alcohol in wine causes the two liquids to evaporate at a different rate, creating legs as the two liquids move away from one another. Alcohol content, glass shape, and temperature will all impact what you’re seeing. So, while legs might be a fun effect, they don’t indicate wine quality. Next, take a sniff. Hold the brim of the glass up and inhale through the nostrils with the mouth closed. To further accentuate the olfactory powers, consider closing your eyes. What do you smell? The first deep inhale will tell you whether the wine is healthy, indicated by a fruity scent, or if it is tainted and unpleasant—called “corked” in wine terms—giving off a smell ranging from wet cardboard to wet dog. Swirling then sniffing the wine for a second time, you’ll discover new scents, as you mix up the chemical compounds and the wine becomes more aromatic. If it’s a red you might smell Life’s Too Beautiful to Rush®

WINE REGION SLO CAL strawberries, pepper, or tobacco, while a white will often give off scents of citrus or banana. Keep in mind, there are no wrong answers! Lastly, have a sip. Remember, taste and smell go hand-in-hand—those little buds on your tongue only take in so much information, your nose actually does most of the work in tasting. The key here is to sip judiciously as you consider five aspects of what you are experiencing: balance, harmony, complexity, evolution and completeness.
SITTING DOWN Okay, let’s dive deeper now into those five aspects. Balance. Our taste buds are wired to detect sweet and sour, salty and bitter. Bitter wine is caused by tannins— the pucker power of a wine—that are found in the skin, seeds, and stems of the grape. In red wine, the entire grape is processed, whereas in white wine, it’s mostly just the juice that is used. Tannins are a plant’s defense mechanism to deter animals, like deer, from eating a plant’s fruit before it’s ripe. Generally, you’ll find more pucker in a younger red wine that has not had the chance to soften. However, the most common components of wine run on a spectrum between sweet and sour. A wine that would be described as having “good balance,” means those two attributes are relatively equal. Harmony. As we know, not all flavors go together (pickles and peanut butter, anyone?). The degree of flavor harmony contained within any given wine is just that, a measure of how well the various tastes complement one another. This is a key, but commonly overlooked factor. Complexity. This is probably the most overused and least understood aspect of wine. Very simply, a wine is complex if its flavors tend to change as they sit on the tongue. This is why it is important to sip and then savor, allowing the wine to fully reveal itself before sipping again. Evolution. How does the wine change from the point it touches the lips through to the swallow? Does the experience deepen, or does it flatten? Is there more to it than expected, or less? Do flavors continue coming, or is it a “one-hit wonder” with a series of similar tastes? Completeness. Oftentimes, this is referred to as aftertaste or finish. In other words, how does it sit? Some wines go down well, others linger on the tongue momentarily, but the great ones remain. Recognizing the completeness of wine requires patience, allowing time for it to appear. 76

WHAT’S IN THE GLASS No crash course in wine tasting can be considered complete without at least a rudimentary knowledge of the glass itself. While the first silver goblets were believed to have originated with the Romans in the third century, it was with their distant ancestors—the fourteenth century Venetians—where glassmaking was perfected, and the wine glass as we know it today was first made. When it comes to wine tasting, the thinner the glass the better. The thin rim makes for a smooth transition from the glass to the mouth and enhances the drinking experience. All wine glasses are comprised of the same four components: the rim, the bowl, the stem and the foot. Let’s go bottom-to-top. The foot is the flat base section of the glass. The stem sits atop the foot—it’s important to note here, that holding the glass by the stem is recommended because it prevents your hands from warming the wine and keeps it at its proper temperature. And that stem connects to the bottom of the bowl, which is the part that holds the wine. The rim, then, is the top of the bowl where we rest our lips to take in a sip. Simple, right? Well, not always. There are as many different types of wine glasses as there are varietals. But don’t get too bogged down in the details because like so many things with wine, there’s a lot of subjectivity and so much of this is dictated by how it feels in your hand. Generally speaking, reds are best in big, wide-open bowls— the surface area within the bowl allows the wine to breathe and enhances its aromas and flavors— while whites tend to fit best in smaller, narrower containers because they don’t need all that space to breathe, and the smaller surface area preserves the delicate, subtle aroma. There is also a newer, universal glass, which works well for all wines. No matter the size or shape, however, the amount to pour is important. You never want to fill it to the rim. Instead, a typical serving should be right around five ounces, or 150 milliliters, which means that a standard 750-milliliter bottle should allow for five glasses. So, now that you know how to sip wine like an industry insider, get out there and experience the best SLO CAL has to offer.
