iconic PLACES

Ribble Valley is home to some of the most iconic landscapes and buildings in the region.

Pendle Hill

The majestic Pendle Hill towers over Ribble Valley and its relative isolation on the edge of the Pennines and the Bowland Fells makes it an iconic feature in the landscape. For generations it has been an inspiration to both visitors and local people, one of the most famous being George Fox, the founding father of the Quaker movement, whose vision of God here, in the early 1600s, inspired him to start what is now a worldwide religious movement. Fox wrote: “As we travelled, we came near a very great hill, called Pendle Hill, and I was moved of the Lord to go up to the top, which I did with difficulty, it was so very steep and high. When I was come to the top, I saw the sea bordering upon Lancashire. From the top of this hill the Lord let me see in what places he had a great people to be gathered.” Beneath the hill lies pretty villages, which reveal a history of intrigue and witchcraft spanning 400 years. Twelve alleged witches, who lived in the area, were charged with the murders of ten people by ʻthe use of witchcraft’. All but two were tried and hanged at Lancaster Castle and go down in history as the Pendle Witches

Centre of The Kingdom

The official centre of the Kingdom is in the heart of Ribble Valley, just a short walk from Dunsop Bridge village. It is the perfect place for those who love to explore local landmarks and admire the breathtaking views this stunning place has to offer.

Trough of Bowland

The Trough of Bowland is a dramatic valley with breathtaking scenery 968ft (295m) above sea level. Though steep and narrow, the road is the most direct connection between Lancaster and Clitheroe.

Longridge Fell

Longridge Fell is the most southerly fell in England. Located close to the town of Longridge, it lies at the southern end of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. On a clear day from the 1,148ft (350m) summit, stunning views are afforded across the Vale of Chipping and the fells of the Forest of Bowland, as well as beyond to Preston, Blackpool and even the Yorkshire Dales and North Wales.

Clitheroe Castle

Set on a limestone crag, Clitheroe Castle is a must-visit landmark whose keep offers scenic views over the whole of the Ribble Valley. Yet the castle owes its esteem to much more than this; its interactive museum, for example, journeys through 350 million years of history and geology, all based on Clitheroe and the surrounding area.

Whalley Abbey

Set in lush woodlands beside the River Calder, Whalley Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey dating back to the 14th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey was largely demolished, and a country house was built on the site, which is now the Retreat and Conference House for the Church of England. Open to the public daily, the ruins of the abbey are a designated Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Stonyhurst College

Founded in 1593, Stonyhurst College is set in breathtaking grounds and its magical interior make it the perfect location for taking a step back in time. Interestingly, Stonyhurst served as a place of literary inspiration for the author J.R.R. Tolkien. The Old Chapel Museum exhibits treasured artefacts relating to Shakespeare, the Royal Family and more.

Roman Ribchester

Situated on the north bank of the River Ribble, Ribchester is the place to visit for Roman history. In addition to exploring surviving Roman features around this picturesque village, the fascinating local museum will help you retrace history to make the most of your visit.

Browsholme Hall

Browsholme Hall is the oldest family home in Lancashire, dating back 14 generations. The privatelyowned Elizabethan home offers guided tours of its magnificent interior and external architecture.

Holmes Mill

A stone’s throw from Clitheroe Castle, you will find the former textile mill, Holmes Mill, first established in 1823. In recent years Holmes Mill has been developed into a leisure venue. Surrounded by gorgeous décor and original Victorian features, including a large mill engine, visitors can explore everything the mill has to offer, from a food court and hotel, to a beer hall with what is believed to be one of the longest bars in Britain.

Cromwell’s Bridge

The stunning Cromwell’s Bridge once carried a packhorse trail over the River Hodder. It was named after Oliver Cromwell, who marched his army over the bridge on the way to Walton-leDale to fight in the Battle of Preston in 1648. Cromwell’s Bridge is the lowest crossing point of the River Hodder and more

Clitheroe

Fancy a bit of shopping?

In Clitheroe, you’re at the right place. On the high street and quaint side streets, there are charming bookshops, crafts stores, and homeware boutiques galore. Foodies also won’t be disappointed - enjoy take-home treats from Cowman’s Famous Sausage Shop or Holmes Mill’s food hall which forms part of a trend-setting social hub converted from a textile mill also incorporating a beer hall and music venue, which attracts visitors from far and wide.

Another great place for shopping is Clitheroe’s historic market, which offers an impressive selection of fresh local food, crafts, homeware and more. Once a year the marketplace joins the high street in hosting the Clitheroe Food Festival- stall after stall of delicious local produce to sample and take home.

Speaking of food and drink, Clitheroe is a highly sought after destination for wining and dining. Many different cuisines can be discovered and if you prefer a craft beer or a cocktail you will not be disappointed.

D Byrne and Co is an independent fifth generation family run wine and spirits merchants with 150 years of fascinating history. Inside its two historic buildings an astounding range of wines and spirits is waiting to be explored.

Maxwell’s café wine bar, established in 2002 was originally a part of Dawson’s department store, It is popular with locals and tourists who can enjoy delicious food and drinks from breakfast time through to the cocktail hour, all of which can be enjoyed on their rooftop terrace in the summer months.

The diversity of shops we have in Clitheroe from mostly independent, family run businesses is amazing. You really feel the love when you wander around the shops and I can find pretty much everything I need within our town centre. We are also spoilt for choice with amazing places to eat and drink. I particularly love the variation of unique, fantastic local produce available too.

A customer who has recently discovered Clitheroe told me ‘It’s so beautiful and a refreshing place to be, it’s like stepping back in time (in a good way!) with people chatting to each other rather than on their phones! I can’t believe the amount of independent shops too, selling really different, unusual items you can’t find anywhere else.

If ever there was a wine shop created by wine lovers for wine lovers, this is it.

Family owned, multi award winning, independent and completely quirky, D. Byrne & Co offers an astounding range of wines and spirits from both of their Clitheroe based shops.

Five generations of the Byrne family have brought wines and spirits of every possible kind to the people of the Ribble Valley for as long as many locals can remember. Come and have a wander round either our extensive Victorian town centre cellars or our old Brewery shop, both ooze history and atmosphere.

VICTORIA

A BIG HEART AND A

From Historic origins

Clitheroe Market has held a regular market since the Norman Conquest in the 12th century. If fresh, locally sourced and exceptional food is important to you, then Clitheroe Market could just be the place to visit. There is a colourful variety of stalls selling fresh meats, fruit & veg, fish, bakers, pet supplies, cheeses and household products as well as artisanal cakes, coffees and gifts. It is fast gaining a reputation as being a leader in the next generation of markets - places where they key words are artisan, community and sustainability. The stallholders are more than happy to chat about their products and welcome visitors, sharing their stories.

Visiting the market in Clitheroe is a day out after all. Shopping and eating whilst soaking up the culture and community of Clitheroe as a unique market town is what it is all about. There is an information board about the markets journey through the centuries in the market itself, giving more information about the town and its Market Charter dating back to 1283-85.

Keep an eye open for special events held at the market, including Clitheroe annual Food festival where the market and the whole town become a showcase for food and drink. Clitheroe Clog Fest brings the sounds of music and clogging to the town in September each year and, along with Clitheroe Castle grounds, uses the Market as a venue for various local clog teams to display their dances.

Investing in the future

Building on the success of over 800 years of trading, Clitheroe market is looking confidently to the future, investing in a series of improvements that will make it even more welcoming, and accessible. With the help of government rural funding, this has included resurfacing the area, enhancing the appearance of the casual stalls and the installation of new street furniture. The works have significantly improved the visual appearance and quality of the market.

Market days

Clitheroe Market is open Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday from 9am til 4pm.

EXPLORE

Longridge

Longridge is aptly named as it sits on a hilltop, a long ridge, with stunning views over the Ribble Valley countryside.

The main street of Longridge, Berry Lane, is very much the hub of the town with a vibrant selection of shops, wine bars and micro-pubs.

Discover unique art, homeware, jewellery, designer clothing and more –(there is an attractive mix of longstanding family businesses and more recent arrivals.)

The Stagedoor is an exciting new venue hidden away off Berry Lane which regularly hosts comedy nights, acoustic sets and West End screenings which can all be enjoyed with a cocktail, wine or beer.

A highlight in Longridge’s calendar is the Goosnargh and Longridge Agricultural Show held every July and is a celebration of farming, food and rural living. The organisers invite you to join them for an action packed day celebrating all that makes the countryside so perfect. The show includes a farmers market, craft stalls, shire horses, cattle, sheep, vintage machinery, horticulture and even a dog show. Many stands are undercover to ensure a great day out whatever the weather.

In September, the annual soap box derby is held, where creativity and daring combine to thrill thousands of spectators as they watch thirty teams take to a specially constructed racetrack down Berry Lane, incorporating chicanes, jumps and water features. A close up of the action can be seen on supersized screens whilst food stalls and live music add to the fun filled day out.

As with Ribble Valley’s other top destinations, Longridge has a fascinating history. Formerly a cotton mill town, Longridge was built in the 1800s from locally quarried sandstone.

Entering Longridge today is like stepping back in timemany of the original sandstone features remain, acting as a memorial to the town’s 19th-century conception.

To add to the heritage, one of the most significant places in Longridge is Club Row. Erected between 1774 and 1804, it is a row of twenty mill workmen’s cottages, built back when Longridge was just a village.( Did you know, Club Row is believed to be the oldest surviving example of properties built by a building society in the world!)

For more tips on what to do in and around Longridge, including walking and history trails, head to Longridge’s Heritage and Visitor Centre - located in the Old Station.

Gary Ward is Chairman of ‘Love Longridge’, a group of business leaders who work tirelessly to promote the town and encourage new events. Passionate about the town, Gary aptly describes it

Its a place steeped in history, rural charm, and natural beauty. It is also well- known for its’ achievements in Britain in Bloom.

Visit the atmospheric ruins and gardens of Whalley Abbey, a Cistercian abbey from the 14th century. A conference centre situated in the grounds regularly holds events such as wellness retreats.

Another important aspect of Whalley’s heritage is the viaduct overlooking the village. Known locally as Whalley Arches and completed in 1850, the viaduct continues to carry the railway over the River Calder to this day connecting Clitheroe and Whalley to Blackburn and beyond.

Independent bistros, wine bars and cafés make for an exciting culinary scene, and the retail environment is thriving. Dotted throughout the village are exquisite jewellers, hair and beauty salons, and designer clothing boutiques - all waiting to be explored.

“Ribble Valley shops offer a warm northern welcome and most of them are independently owned, which means they are able to offer unique product ranges and a friendly boutique style shopping experience.” explained Marianne Hyde, proprietor of Precious Whalley, which has recently re-located to 7 Accrington Rd and where the discerning customer is able to browse handpicked collections of clothing, jewellery and accessories.

Worth a special mention is the award-winning outdoor clothing specialist Whalley Warm & Dry. Here you’ll be met by highly qualified staff who give expert advice and help you find the perfect product for your outdoor needs.

Run by a local family, this venture was founded by Brooke Darlington. To learn more about her inspirational journey please visit thenablab.co.uk

So if you like the sound of a charming village that combines history, nature, and contemporary culture, Whalley is well worth a visit.

John Atherton of Whalley Chamber of Trade and Director of Atherton Property and Land, explained

I sometimes think that we don’t know how lucky we are here in Whalley. It’s a beautiful place and remains a great place to live and work. In recent years, people say it has become a small town but I still regard it as a village - the village that’s got all the essentials, whatever your age. We have a fabulous array of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes.

There’s also a wide range of sports and social clubs, churches and a school - and perhaps most importantly, there’s a very friendly and caring community here that still looks out for each other. It’s not perfect and we’re always looking to improve things, but it is a little corner of paradise that we need to look after and nurture.

The brands on offer are handpicked with ‘individuality’ in mind. Marianne Hyde, owner, is strongly influenced by her Scandinavian roots when sourcing, so you will find many Danish and Swedish brands at Precious which are both stylish and very practical. She looks to recreate the bohemian feel of her boutique in Ibiza, with inspiration from the UK, France, Italy and the USA.

A

VALLEY OF

inspiration

Ribble Valley has always been an inspirational place for artists, including one of the most famous landscape artists, Joseph Turner who visited Ribble Valley to paint in the late 1850’s.

Authors too have been motivated by the landscape over the years, right up to today. One such author, currently using Ribble Valley as her writing canvas, is Catherine Finch who lives in the Ribble Valley and draws on the area for inspiration and ideas. She is the author of three novels and two short story collections. She shared her story…

When did you start writing?

A long time ago! I filled a whole exercise book when I was nine about five children and a dog. I wrote books for my own children using their toys as characters. When I was teaching, I wrote the end of year school productions, so I suppose I have always written in one way or another. One of my short stories, Paid in Full, was a runner up in the Bath Short Story Competition 2017, and was published in their Annual Anthology. This gave me some confidence to write my first novel.

What are your books about?

Walking Apart is about the challenges of a recently retired couple, revaluating their lives and their relationship. It centres on their struggles, but I think it is also about hope, about how we can start afresh with the same person, and find contentment and purpose in our post career lives. David and Helen live in the fictional village of Fellburn, which could be any of our lovely Ribble Valley villages. I always thought that the book came to a natural conclusion in the final chapter, but my readers had other ideas and begged to know what happened next, hence the sequel, Walking Alone.

Why did you choose the Ribble Valley as a setting?

There are so many reasons, but mainly because it’s my home and I love it! What more could an author ask for? This lovely part of the United Kingdom has it all. I could take my characters shopping in Clitheroe, walking near Sawley Abbey, driving to work with views of Pendle Hill. Setting is so important in a novel and to write genuinely, a good knowledge of the setting is essential. As the story unfolded, I could imagine my characters in familiar places. I don’t always name the hotel they stay in or the pub they visit, but they are firmly fixed in my mind and sometimes spotted by readers.

Do

you feel that this area inspires creativity?

Absolutely! I’m a keen walker and when the plot is tricky or the characters are irritating me, I get out and walk. It’s a chance to think things through, to listen to characters as they converse. I sometimes record the dialogue on my phone, so if you’re out walking and you come across a woman who seems to be arguing with herself, don’t think she’s mad - it might be me!

Can you give us an extract from one of the books?

Of course. This is Simon, worried about his job as a headteacher, driving to meet his colleague, Helen, for some advice. Walking Apart, Chapter 3.

'This journey was a familiar one, taking him away from Blackburn to the hills and farmland of the Ribble Valley. On most mornings it was a pleasure, lifting his spirits and reminding him of long rambles with his father along the rivers Ribble and Calder. Pendle Hill was magnificent in all seasons. It dominated the skyline, sometimes white with snow or summer green with pasture, often wearing a thin shroud of drizzle and mist, its broad summit hidden from view. The legends of witchcraft were well known locally, but Simon always felt that the hill guarded the real truth.'

What advice would you give to anyone wanting become an author?

Write about what you know, join a writing group for support, and essentially, just get on with it. I often hear the phrase, ‘I could write a book’, and I wish I had a pound for each person who will never even start. It isn’t an easy process, but it’s very rewarding so if you have a story to tell, choose a familiar setting, write that first chapter and let the characters take you into the narrative.

Cheryl Hook of melt explains her love of fragrance and how it can help reduce stress and improve well-being

Back in the 1990’s, after a lifelong love of fragrance, melt began experimenting with essential oils to help balance some of the more negative aspects of a busy working life, which involved a lot of travel. The resulting formulations worked so well that we continued to develop more and today have a library of over 50 fragrances to call on.

Fast forward to the spring of 2020 and suddenly we were all at home – and those of us that were still able, or required to work, were doing so at stressful levels.

At Melt we started to look at ways to enhance our time at home with fragrance. Studies have shown that fragrance influences how we perceive an activity or place – and how we feel about it.

Here’s how it works:

We smell with our brain, NOT our nose. When you inhale a fragrance, especially essential oils, the compounds enter the olfactory system via the nasal passage and from there have a direct impact on the area of the brain that deals with emotions, memory, mood and heart rate.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST FRAGRANCE...

Once we understand this, we can start to choose our fragrances to help create positive changes to emotional and physical well-being, productivity and reduce stress. Knowing how different oils work means we can create different aroma-zones. For example, fragrances can be introduced in hand washes in the bathrooms as well as in spritzes, diffusers and candles.

About the benefits of essential oils: Lavender: seriously versatile, it can promote restful sleep and relaxation – a definite contender for the end of day bath and bed. (Found in our White, Lavender, Still & Rich Cream fragrances)

Rose Geranium: balances emotions, calming and uplifting – great for those tricky zoom meetings. (Used in our Neroli & Rose Geranium fragrance)

Grapefruit: refreshing, antiseptic and stimulating – perfect to kick start the day. (Found in Shine)

Petigrain: uplifting and good for exhaustion. (Used in our Recherche fragrance)

Rose: balances and calms. (Used in our Still, More & Noir fragrances)

Vetiver: grounding and soothing. (Used in Nutmeg & Vetiver fragrance)

Frankincense: eases coughs and helps with deep breathing. (Used in Violet & Black Pepper)

Peppermint: great for headaches. (Used in Still)

So, from the above it is easy to see how switching your home fragrances can help you close the door on the ‘office’ and establish a relaxing environment for the evening.

As the nights draw in – why not visit melt? We have a peaceful and relaxing Chandlery where you can select your perfect fragrance over a glass of wine. We operate a ‘no rush, no push’ welcome to all visitors. n

River Down by the

The River Ribble is one of the north of England’s most dramatic rivers, making a 75-mile journey from its source in the Yorkshire Dales to the Ribble Estuary near Lytham. The river weaves and turns through the Ribble Valley countryside, passing numerous villages on the way. Follow the river and stumble upon everything from historic Roman forts to the awe-inspiring views that inspired Middle Earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’. As well as numerous riverside trails, there are many opportunities for fishing in Ribble Valley. There really is something for everyone.

Edisford Bridge

One of the tributaries of the Ribble is the River Hodder, which is one of the most peaceful and unspoilt rivers in the north of England. It begins its life high in the fells, 400m above sea level, where it drains much of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape and feeds into the large Stocks Reservoir, which provides much of Lancashire’s water. The Hodder rises on White Hill and flows for approximately 23 miles to the mighty River Ribble, entering at its largest tributary, and passing through the Duchy Estate owned by His Majesty the King. It takes in the picturesque villages of Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge, the spectacular Inn at Whitewell, and the world-renowned Stonyhurst estate. The river then passes under the iconic Cromwell’s Bridge to merge into the main river at Great Mitton.

Ribble Valley is also home to the River Calder, which flows from the South Pennines through East Lancashire,

flowing past historic Whalley before joining the Ribble.

As well as these three major rivers, there is a myriad of small streams, brooks and other watercourses that wind their way through our beautiful landscape, making the lush green countryside that marks out the Ribble Valley.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy our rivers, we have some circular river walks, which have developed as part of the Ribble Life Together programme. The Chipping, Slaidburn and Sabden routes are all in Ribble Valley, with many others close by, and they can be found at ribbletrust.org.uk

Otters have been spotted in the Ribble, which also boasts sea trout and salmon among its aquatic life. White clawed crayfish, an endangered species, can be found in parts of the Ribble, and there are plenty of mayflies, another welcome sign that the water is clean.

GOING FISHING?

There is little better than heading off to the river on a sunny day with a fishing rod, a packed lunch, and a healthy dose of optimism! Fishing is also a great educational activity. It’s a chance to ground yourself in nature, learn about the amazing environment we live in, and acquaint yourself with the all the cool creatures that we share the countryside with. And fishing isn’t always about catching fish. One of the most significant benefits of river fishing is its positive impact on health. Going outdoors and surrounding yourself with nature reduces stress and anxiety, boosts mood, and improves mental wellbeing. River fishing is an excellent way to spend time in nature and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life, the call of the smartphone or television screen. Plus, it’s a low-impact activity that can help improve fitness levels, particularly if you walk along the riverbank to find the perfect spot.

To discover more about fishing along our local rivers go to ribbletrust.org.uk and find their ‘Go Fishing ‘ page.

RELAX BY THE RIVER

What better place to unwind and enjoy some Ribble Valley hospitality than a riverside Inn where time can simply stand still.

The Aspinall Arms, Mitton sits on the banks of the river Ribble overlooking the medieval All Hallows church and the 14th century Great Mitton Hall on the raised bluff opposite.

The Inn at Whitewell is a special place to be any time of the year, with fabulous views over the River Hodder to the fells of the Forest of Bowland.

The Spread Eagle Sawley can be found further up the Ribble, with views from the restaurant across the river. Sitting on the river bank, it is not unusual to spot an Otter passing through.

Enchanting Woodland

Gisburn Forest is the wilder choice of place to relax and discover, with fantastic cycling and walking in the heart of the beautiful Forest of Bowland National Landscape.

Gisburn Forest, situated in the upper Hodder Valley, near to Stocks Reservoir is over 1200 hectares in size, making it the largest wooded area in Lancashire. It is home to conifers, spruce and a huge variety of wildlife. Whilst still a working forest for timber production, Gisburn has become a magnet for nature lovers, and there is ample parking and picnicking sites for visitors, as well as a café and toilets at the Gisburn Forest Hub from where you can enjoy way-marked walks and cycle routes. Most walking and biking trails start from the Hub, the main car park. It’s also the base for a range of sporting and other events including mountain biking, trail running and orienteering.

There are 16km of mountain bike trails across the forest which have been created by Forestry England and a volunteer group of trail builders. After deciding which level of track you would like to take at the Skills Loop at the Hub, set off to traverse the wide range of trails, from beginner through to expert, all while enjoying the exhilaration of fresh air and the beautiful surrounding forest.

The forest has a huge array of habitat types supporting varied wildlife. These include a wide range of bird species including important birds of prey such as Hen Harriers and the Short-Eared Owl. There is a continuing programme of planting more broadleaved trees across the forest, to help continue the diversification of habitats as well as provide visual improvements to the landscape.

LONGRIDGE FELL

The forests on Longridge Fell are also very much working environments, but they also afford some great walking, and off-road cycling experiences. From the forest clearings on the north face there are some spectacular views across the whole Forest of Bowland.

SPRING WOOD, WHALLEY

Much lauded for its bluebell and ramson (wild garlic) displays, this semi-natural ancient woodland is one of the best examples in Lancashire and has Biological Heritage status. There is an access for all route, one leading to the centre of the wood, suitable for buggies and trampers, and a steeper path, climbing to the summit via the arboretum. Highly recommended for woodland enthusiasts or those who just enjoy listening to Warblers, Jays and Chiffchaffs whilst eating ice cream and watching squirrels feeding.

To discover more about the forests and woodlands of Ribble Valley go to www.visitriblevalley.co.uk

DARK SKIES ILLUMINATE THE FOREST

The forest also has a newly accredited Dark Sky Discovery Site, one of five within the Forest of Bowland. This means that the night skies over the Forest of Bowland National Landscape have been recognised as some of the darkest in England and therefore ideal for star gazing. There are regular events for the keen star gazer or those who wish to become acquainted more with our night sky, run by local stargazing companies, for example, gostargazing.co.uk

If you are walking a dog in the countryside, please keep it under close control. Not only might there be sheep and other livestock in the fields, but other wildlife might be at risk of disturbance, especially in Spring. If ground nesting birds are disturbed their young chicks might be abandoned. Young hares, leverets, that start life in open fields are also vulnerable to disturbance. When walking in the countryside please follow the country code at all times and respect the life of the countryside.

Ribchester Roman Museum is located on the north bank of the River Ribble a few miles upstream of Preston. It is situated in the middle of what used to be the Roman fort at Ribchester, a Roman cavalry base and command centre for the whole of the surrounding region. The Romans arrived in Ribchester around AD 70 and remained for almost 300 years during which time a civilian settlement called a vicus grew up around the fort.

The squadron of cavalry stationed at Bremetennacum Veteranorum, the Roman name for Ribchester, was made up of auxiliaries from the provinces of the Roman Empire. The original garrison comprised Asturians from Spain but were eventually replaced in the late 2nd century by a unit from the region that is now modern Hungary. They were Sarmatians and famed for their horse riding skills. The Sarmatians are also interesting because of their links with the myths and legends of King Arthur.

Roman Ribchester is brought to life by dramatic displays, which contain a life size cavalryman, Roman legionary and exciting interactive exhibits. Columns have been erected for the

first time in 2000 years and there are wonderful objects, including weaponry, jewellery and leatherwork alongside favourites like the replica of the Ribchester Parade Helmet and impressive sculpture of a cavalryman riding down his Celtic adversary. Visitors to the museum can see the granaries that were used for storing large volumes of wheat and other foodstuffs. Part of the defensive ditch that was dug around the fort can be seen in the field opposite the west gate of the fort and there are also remains of the Roman baths behind the primary school. The impressive columns that hold up the White Bull pub in the centre of the village are genuine Roman artefacts.

The museum also delves into Ribchester and the Ribble Valley’s pre historic past and contains wonderful objects like the amazingly well preserved Bronze Age sword, Iron Age brooches and carvings.

The museum, which was officially opened in September 1915, hosts events throughout the year. Details can be found on our website.

Full LIVING LIFE TO THE

AT A HOLIDAY HOME PARK

Owning a Holiday Home in the Ribble Valley is already a dream come true for many lucky people, so why not take a closer look around some of the area’s most attractive parks...

TO START YOUR HOLIDAY HOME DREAM FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:

1. Choose a Park

Every park is different, for example some will have a shop, bar or club and others may have no facilities. Rules will vary between parks too such as the age limit to owning a home and rules on pets or maybe the things you are permitted to do around the home, such as gardens or balconies. One thing is for sure, if you go and take a look around a local park, you will receive a warm welcome and good information to help you make the right choice.

2. Choose a pitch

Within each park, pitches will vary, and one will probably suit you more than another. For example you may want to have a home beside a river, or close to facilities, and you may wish to choose a sunnier or shadier plot. Access and parking may be also a consideration for you.

3. Choose a Holiday Home

Once you have found the park of your choice, then is the time to choose your dream holiday home. The park owner will provide expert, practical help to ensure you have all the information to make the right choice for you. The owner will also help you get the best value for your money, as well as guarantee the safe installation of your holiday home. They will also help with any additional works such as access ramps, balconies etc.

Having your own place to retreat to in the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley countryside, could be described a dream for many people, but owning a holiday home at one of the area’s picturesque home parks provides that very opportunity. Some of the region's most attractive, award winning holiday home parks can be found here in Ribble Valley.

Each park has its own unique identity, each with a slightly different range of facilities and local opportunities but all have one thing in common, the opportunity to own a place in the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, and the comfort of a modern and luxurious holiday home.

Val and Mike have a holiday park on Hackings Caravan Park near Billington. They enjoy the community feel of owning a park home, and they particularly enjoy the fact that they are staying in such lovely rural surroundings. Having always lived in towns and cities Val and Mike are loving being able to escape to so many countryside areas on the doorstep. Being able to shops at a real local butcher is something Val values along with having so many great eating places on hand. The riverside Aspinall Arms is one of their favourites. Something Val and Mike are particularly keen on is watching local amateur dramatics which they feel play an important part in generating new artistic talent and providing genuine entertainment.

Gordon and Karen chose a park holiday home as they were keen to escape the rat race, and sitting on their decking looking at the amazing views across to the fells you can understand why. They have wild deer coming to feed close to the home and recently watched a barn owl on the road between the park and Waddington. Shireburne Park, whilst it is situated in beautiful countryside, is within walking distance of both Clitheroe and Waddington. This, together with the fact that they felt the park was so immaculately maintained, are the reasons why they chose this park.

The proximity of Clitheroe means that Karen can work out at the local gym as well as enjoying the food at local hostelries. The Lower Buck, which they referred to as still a ‘traditional village pub’ and the Calfs Head at Worston where they always have a ‘great meal’ are two firm favourites. Another of their favourites trips out is to Longridge which they love, especially the Old Station café.

Both couples clearly love staying at their Ribble Valley holiday parks homes, which offer a great opportunity to stay in the countryside whilst having lots of amazing food, walking and shopping experiences on the doorstep.

These are but two examples of the many hundreds of happy holiday home park customers.
