A Brief History of Rapid City 1874 - Discovery of gold in the Black Hills brought settlers to the region. 1876 - The settlement was first named Hay Camp and then eventually renamed Rapid City in honor of the creek running through it. 1885 - South Dakota Mines was founded to provide education in mining and metallurgical engineering. Today it is one of the most highly acclaimed technical universities in the country. 1938 - Bikers gathered for the first Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, marking the start of the largest annual motorcycle event in the world. 1941 - Mount Rushmore National Memorial opened to the public, welcoming nearly 400,000 travelers within the first year. 1942 - The original Rapid City Airport became Rapid City Army Air Base. This later reopened in 1947 to become Ellsworth Air Force Base. It is now home to the 28th Bomb Wing and the future home to the next-generation bomber, the B-21 Raider.

2. A giant, cartoon-ish brontosaurus straddling the city skyline at Dinosaur Park since 1936.

6. Chapel in the Hills, an exact reproduction of the Borgund Stavkirke of Laedral, Norway from 1150 AD.

7. More then twenty miles of recreational trails in the middle of town. 3. One of the world’s largest reptile zoos, it started with a rattlesnake and a hat and is now one of the most popular attractions in the area.

8. The ever-changing outdoor street art gallery between 6th and 7th, and Main and Saint Joseph Streets. Art Alley will always surprise you.

9. Pristine fishing and fly fishing in Rapid Creek that flows through the city center. An excellent spot for pursuing wild Brown Trout.

The City of Presidents is a free, self-guided walking tour featuring life-size bronze statues of every U.S. president, each posed to reflect their personality and story. From Washington’s quiet strength to Lincoln’s thoughtful gaze, the sculptures celebrate leadership and national history. The City of Presidents began in 2000 with the placement of the first four statues: George Washington, John Adams, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Each statue is privately funded, created by local artists and gifted to the city upon completion.

Wildlife & Park Safety Tips The parks and open spaces around Rapid City are home to some of the most stunning landscapes, and wild residents, in America. From bison and bighorn sheep to prairie dogs and mountain goats, these animals are part of what makes the Black Hills and Badlands unforgettable. Exploring safely protects both you and the wildlife that call these places home. A few simple precautions can help you enjoy the views, capture amazing photos and leave nature just as you found it.

Wildlife Safety Tips •

Keep your distance. Stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk and other large animals, and 25 yards from smaller wildlife such as deer or prairie dogs.

Watch from your car. If you encounter animals on the road, remain inside your vehicle until they move along.

•

Don’t feed the wildlife. Human food can make animals sick and aggressive. Even friendly burros can nip.

•

Be smart with photos. Use zoom lenses or binoculars for close-up shots, and never approach an animal for a selfie.

Keep pets leashed. It keeps your pet and the wildlife safe from surprise encounters.

3. Be Respectful to Wildlife

Keep a safe distance from wildlife, avoid feeding them, and remember that while it’s exciting to see them up close, they are fast, unpredictable, and best admired from at least 25 yards away.

4. Be Prepared

Go prepared by packing water, snacks, proper layers, and a first aid kit, checking the weather before you go, and letting someone know your plans if you are hiking alone.

5. Respect Other Hikers

Spearﬁsh Canyon

Carved by water and time, Spearfish Canyon is one of the most breathtaking drives in South Dakota. Sheer limestone walls rise more than a thousand feet on either side of the scenic byway, framing a route filled with waterfalls, forest and wildlife. Pactola Lake

Crystal clear and ringed by pine covered hills, Pactola Lake is the largest and most stunning body of water in the Black Hills. Mickelson Trail

A 109-mile path winding through tunnels, wooden bridges, open meadows and historic mining towns, the George S. Mickelson Trail is the ultimate Black Hills adventure route. Crazy Horse Memorial® Towering above the southern Black Hills, the Crazy Horse Memorial® is a powerful tribute to Native American heritage and the vision of Chief Henry Standing Bear and sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. The mountain carving, still in progress, depicts the legendary Lakota leader pointing toward his ancestral lands, a lasting symbol of pride, resilience and cultural identity. Top animals to see. American bison, begging burros, pronghorn antelope and prairie dogs. Tip. Park roads have sharp curves and narrow tunnels that can be challenging for large motorhomes. Check for seasonal closures, as some roads are not maintained in winter.

Wildlife Loop Road

A scenic 18-mile drive through rolling prairies and pine-covered hills where bison, pronghorn, burros and prairie dogs roam freely. Go slow, the animals run the show here. Tip: Drive early in the morning or near sunset for the best wildlife sightings and golden-hour photos. If you are having trouble finding animals, stop at a visitor center and staff can share recent spottings.

Needles Highway

Fourteen miles of winding road carved through towering granite spires and narrow tunnels make this route both an engineering marvel and a photographer’s dream. Every curve reveals a new jaw-dropping view. Tip: Arrive early or late in the day, as traffic can back up through the tunnels during peak hours.

Sylvan Lake

Known as the crown jewel of Custer State Park, this postcard-perfect alpine lake is surrounded by granite formations and pines. Swim, paddleboard or picnic along the shore, or hike the short trail that loops around the water. Tip: Bring water shoes if you plan to wade in, as the lake’s granite edges can be slick.

Badlands National Park

Just an hour east of Rapid City, Badlands National Park reveals a world of layered rock formations, endless prairie and skies so vast they steal your breath. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site East of the Badlands, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site tells the story of the Cold War and the people who stood ready during one of the most tense periods in modern history. The site preserves three key areas: the visitor center, the Delta-01 Launch Control Facility and the Delta-09 Missile Silo, each offering a rare look into the nation’s nuclear defense system. Wind Cave National Park

Below the prairie of the southern Black Hills, Wind Cave National Park reveals one of the world’s longest and most complex cave systems. Known for its rare boxwork formations and the steady breath of air that inspired its name, this underground labyrinth carries both natural wonder and deep cultural meaning. At the start of many cave tours, visitors learn the Lakota Emergence Story, which explains how the Lakota people came into this world from Wind Cave, making it a sacred point of origin. Bear Butte State Park Rising from the northern edge of the Black Hills, Bear Butte State Park is more than a landmark, it is a place of deep spiritual significance. Known as Mato Paha, or Bear Mountain, to the Lakota and Cheyenne people, this site has been a gathering and prayer place for thousands of years. Visitors are welcome to hike the Bear Butte Summit Trail for sweeping views of the plains and distant peaks, but are asked to do so with quiet respect. Prayer cloths and offerings seen along the trail are sacred, so please do not disturb them. Whether you come to reflect, hike or simply take in the vast horizon, Bear Butte offers a moment of peace that stays with you.

Devils Tower National Monument Located across the South Dakota border and into the plains of Wyoming, Devils Tower National Monument is an unmistakable natural wonder and a sacred site known to many Native nations as Mato Tipila, or Bear Lodge. Its striking columns and sheer cliffs have inspired stories, ceremonies and visitors for centuries. Explore the Tower Trail, an easy 1.3-mile loop circling the base, for close-up views of the columns and climbers scaling the rock.
