| The Island Life

Welcome to the island life Do you want a luxurious vacation, complete with gourmet meals made by a private chef and a sweeping private balcony overlooking the water? You deserve it. But do you also want to relax, to loosen the tie and don a pair of flip flops and spend a little time away from sky-high expectations and a dress code that requires socks? If the answer to both is yes, Port Aransas is the place for your next vacation. Something about being both a small town in Texas but also an island escape with miles of uninterrupted beach puts Port A in the unique position of being the most laidback spot for luxury you’ll find just about anywhere. As Linda Halioua, owner of local favorite restaurant Venetian Hot Plate, explains life in Port Aransas, “You’re going to be sitting in a bar, and you’re going to have a fisherman on one side and on the other is a brain surgeon, and you’re having a beer with both and talking about anything. You’ll be treated the same no matter what.” This island has everything you think of when it comes to luxury—four-story beach houses with sleek kitchens and Gulf views, a seaside golf course, five-

star dining experiences (though flip flops are always in dress code), and fishing yachts so the whole family can reel in a trophy. But one thing you won’t find here? Pretentiousness. Because after you leave your culinary experience, you’ll drop into Shorty’s Place for a beer at the oldest and friendliest bar on the island. Back at Horace Caldwell Pier, you’ll cast a line with a salty fisherman, not realizing he’s traveled the globe on elite fishing yachts and may even hold a record or two. Down on the beach, there are few who can resist digging their toes into the warm sand with their kids or who won’t be excited by the sight of a sea turtle bobbing alongside the jetty. Whether you’re an island cowboy, a surfing CEO, or an angling entrepreneur, in Port Aransas you can do both and you can be both. No questions asked. That’s why Port Aransas is the place where traditions anchor. So, ditch your blazer in the sand, grab your family by the hand, and dive into this unique Port Aransas lifestyle. And once you’re gone…just remember that tomorrow you’re one day closer to coming back.

In a world where remote work is the norm, RECONSIDER what the “home” in work from home can mean. ASK YOURSELF: Why not find joy in remote work? Why not FIND THE PERSONAL CONNECTION that is lacking in remote environments in A PLACE WHERE COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING? Why not find a way to be OOO and not fall behind? Why not find a weekend, a week, a month in your calendar where you can log off at 5 and BE ON THE BEACH BY 5:05? And why not MAKE THAT PLACE PORT A? As they say, home is where the heart is, and it’s easy to FIND YOUR HEART ON THIS ISLAND. FIND WHAT YOU NEED IN PORT ARANSAS.

Love is in the Salt Air When Rosalind and George Kurita stepped on the Port Aransas beach to be married in 1972, the only witnesses were their parents, siblings, roommates, and the justice of the peace who officiated. George’s brother took the photos you see above. “It was a different world,” Rosalind said. “We had tents and built a fire. We ate hot dogs.” On their anniversary, wearing the same outfits they wore half a century before, Rosalind and George returned to the Port Aransas beach. This time, photographer Chrissy Sedrick was there to capture the memories. Plenty has changed since that day more than 50 years ago when the pair were wed, but the important things haven’t: Rosalind and George’s love for each other and the Port Aransas beach.

Port Aransas is stitched together with these kinds of stories. Talk to most visitors here and they’ll tell you about how special this island is, whether it’s their first or 50th visit, whether they’re down for the annual family reunion that keeps growing or they’re here to wet a line with the same fishing guide their dad used when they were a kid. That’s tradition. That’s the island life. Ready to write your own love story in the sand? Book a beach wedding through Port A Beach Weddings. Prefer an indoor ceremony before your beach party? Host your micro-wedding at the quaint Chapel on the Dunes, the oldest consecrated church on the island. Or, set sail towards your future aboard the Tiki Tours Port Aransas boat with Captain Moon Shelton!

ANCHORED AND ASCENDING Port Aransas businesses highlight generations of entrepreneurship.

Shorty’s Place Shorty’s Place isn’t called “the oldest and friendliest” for nothing. The ceiling is papered with ball caps spanning generations, and current owner Edwin Myers has ensured that the influence of Mack Daniel and Gladys (Shorty) Fowler, who opened the bar in 1946, is everywhere. Claim a barstool at Shorty’s today to find a cold drink and hot live music.

The legacy of Port Aransas is one of tradition and trailblazing that is inspired by that tradition. Nowhere is that more evident than in the locally-owned businesses that make the Port A experience so compelling. Spotlighted here are six businesses that play a part in that experience; three are more than 50 years old, and three are less than five years old.

Port A Pioneers

The Tarpon Inn The Tarpon Inn opened its doors in 1886, built from surplus lumber from that same site’s Civil War barracks. If the stories are to be believed, generations of Texas royalty have stayed at The Tarpon Inn, including Hedy Lamarr and Duncan Hines. Now, patrons revel in the quiet serenity curated by the establishment’s owner Lee Roy Hoskins: TV-less rooms, rocking chairs on 200-foot-long porches, and a history that extends past the town’s formation.

Farley Boat Works In 1915, the Farley family launched two things: the first wooden boat built exclusively for Tarpon fishing in Port Aransas and a legacy that would extend for the next century and beyond. Farley Boat Works today is a living exhibit run by the Port Aransas Preservation & Historical Association. Visitors can participate in guided workshops led by expert teachers and even learn to build their own wooden boat.

Bluefin Realty The broker and founder of Bluefin Realty opened her business in 2021, but Jennifer Baker has more than 20 years of experience finding clients their dream homes and a deep-rooted love for this coastal community. This team of real estate agents not only knows Port A’s housing market, they know the town’s heart and have a hand in weaving its fabric of entrepreneurial excellence. Sip Yard Three stories of entertainment await at Sip Yard Port Aransas, which was opened in 2024 by a small group of passionate owners. Sip Yard’s first floor is a familyfriendly space boasting a large stage for concerts and several restaurant windows along the perimeter. The second-floor bar is reserved for the 21+ crowd to enjoy a beverage, and the third floor boasts great views of both the Gulf and marina.

| Places to Stay

Port Aransas takes both halves of the descriptor “beach town” very seriously. The beach here is expansive, drivable, and picturesque, but the heart of Port Aransas lies in its community and traditions. This isn’t your cookiecutter beach vacation destination. Stay in a beautiful beach house that sleeps 20, but it’s the time in that home’s living room with your kids and parents that you’ll remember. Spend a night at the Tarpon Inn with its 150-year history, but it’s swapping stories with the owner about the tarpon scales hanging in the lobby that you’ll remember. In Port Aransas, you come for the beach, but you come back for the town.

FISH CAMP, SWAY BY AVANTSTAY In the Fishing Capital of Texas, it only makes sense that there would be fishing cabins where anglers can rest their heads before setting out for those early morning charter call times. You can probably picture the look: heavy woods and vintage industrial finishings. But Sway by AvantStay takes the fishing cabin to the next level with “Fish Camp,” a beautiful, interconnected cottage and house set available to rent individually or as a collective.

THE ROCK ‘N ROLL, DANCING DUNES Every cabin at Dancing Dunes is bursting with personality. The "Rock ‘n Roll cabin" is a shining example. It’s a cottage where musicians and music aficionados can find inspiration among largerthan-life paintings of The Beatles, then step out onto the shared porch and courtyard area to enjoy community and a sense of peace. EVERYTHING’S

The stories of Port Aransas visitors often begin with something along the lines of, “Vacationing here is a family tradition.” There’s something so sweet about post-sun naps with your little ones or sharing a glass of wine with your parents on the porch while listening to the waves. Port A getaways become even dearer as years pass and you have traditions to anticipate. As that family tradition begins to grow multigenerational, though, you may wonder how to maintain that special, intimate energy that only comes when everyone is housed under one roof.

IN TEXAS

“The Coast is Clear” is a Palmilla Beach Resort & Golf Community home that shows exactly how. This home sleeps up to 16 people, with four bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms so everyone has room to spread out. Kids’ bunk rooms turn bedtime into an adventure, while spacious primary bedrooms create luxe private spaces for evening retreats. The outdoor area is ideal for making memories with the whole crew. There, you can take a dip in the private pool and then warm up by the fire pit. And when the sun starts to set, head up to the third-floor crow’s nest—complete with a full bar and sparkling Gulf views—for the perfect nightcap. Though “The Coast is Clear” is a newer home, it joins the ranks of ample abodes on the island whose walls have seen children become adults become parents become grandparents. Port Aransas has long been known for beach houses where multiple generations can come together… and living up to the reputation that everything’s bigger in Texas.

REINVENT Alternate Modes of Transportation

When you roll into Port Aransas, it may be on the four wheels of the family vehicle, but don’t stay there for long. People get around a little differently here on the island. Haven’t you heard? It’s a golf cart town. This trip, trade the mom-mobile for something luxurious. Enter: Port A’s

34

| Things to Do

version of the limo, the eight-seater golf cart. These stretched-out carts are not only tons of fun to drive, but they also have plenty of room for the family’s beach gear. No need to overload the cart! The one pictured here is rentable from Port A Beach Buggies. Chauffeur not included (but

hey, bet you could get your dad to wear a hat and some gloves if you really try!). If you’ve “been there, done that” with the golf cart route, it may be time to “moke” your way around Port Aransas. Mokes are a mini electric vehicle originally used in the British

THE WHEEL

military in the mid-20th century. Visually, they sit somewhere between Jeeps and golf carts. They’re cute, they’re quirky, and they come in an array of pastel colors made for a day on the beach. Reach out to Gulf Coast Mokes to choose your ride! If you want to get away from four

wheels altogether, turn to the reliable bicycle. Rent a fat-tire bike from Island Surf Rentals, Tarpon Carts & Rentals, or Marlin’s Beach Carts and cruise the coast in motorless silence. Bikes are also ideal for exploring the Port Aransas Nature Preserve’s hike and bike trails.

While one of the most unique things about Port Aransas is the ability to drive on its beaches, that doesn’t mean you have to do it on the same four wheels you drive to work…and you don’t have to worry about getting that vehicle sandy, either! Think outside the box—try an alternate mode of transportation.

Things To Do

IT’S THE

Pirate’s Life FOR WE

Ahoy there! In Port Aransas, it’s not entirely uncommon to see bandana-clad, sword-wielding pirates swaggering their way around town…but don’t worry, there won’t be any golf cart plundering here. You’re just seeing a member of the Red Dragon Pirate Cruise’s crew. For these pirates, working on the Red Dragon is not just a job, it’s a way of life. What exactly, you may be wondering, is that way of life? What makes a pirate? Poison, a crew member completing her fifth season in 2026 and the first woman to captain the Red Dragon pirate ship, provided a glimpse into her buccaneering beginnings. The first time Poison stepped foot on the Red Dragon was during her high school’s senior skip day when she and her twin sister came to Port Aransas to apply for the role. Poison has always loved the story of Peter Pan and the lost boys and compares her first experience riding along on the boat to that classic tale. Although those intimidating pirates she first met became some of her best friends, at the time, well—“I was very much still a little lost boy,” she laughs. Poison’s “pirate name” came about because she and her twin sister—who also got the job—wanted to be able to play with a “two sides of the same coin” vibe of banter during the show. They

38

| Things to Do

crafted their pirate personas to match their real-life predispositions and came up with Poison and Peach. While Peach has moved on, Poison is still voyaging on the friendly seas, and the character has developed over the years. Poison’s pirate persona was another thing inspired by the Peter Pan story. “Poison is a character inspired by the lost boys of Neverland and Rufio from Hook…very playful, very energetic, very active…I've admired the story of Peter Pan and Neverland so much, and now I get to do it,” she explains. Poison is creating favorite moments just as much as she is enjoying them. She relays several stories exemplifying this, from meeting a boy with disabilities with whom she was able to forge a special connection to a time a little girl who had recently lost a parent still managed to find kindness and joy in Poison’s arms during the show. “We have stories like that all the time,” Poison says, “[of] people coming up and saying they just lost their dad, they lost their mom, they lost their grandma. And oftentimes, a sentence like that ends with, ‘this is the first time that they've really smiled, or that they've really laughed.’” It’s not just kids finding once-ina-lifetime experiences on the Red Dragon. Poison says, “My first summer, we had a group of people fill up the bow section and they all had matching shirts…I played ‘I Will Survive’ on the

boat, and then they came up to me afterwards and said, ‘We are a support group for widows and widowers, and this is our theme song that you just played.’” In those moments are where Poison’s “why” exists. “Because you don't know who's coming on the boat and why they need to be a pirate for two hours,” she says simply. Those special moments are part of what made Poison want to pursue her captain’s license. The intensive program involves logging all your hours on the water (360 days’ worth!) to qualify for a 100-ton inland license, followed by a rigorous maritime education course. It’s all been worth it, though. “There's been a lot of really young girls that see me driving, and even preteen girls…or girls that are in their early teens that didn't know this was an option. Because I didn't know this was an option. I just started on the boat because I was a theater nerd. And now this is what I'm doing,” she says. While they may jab at each other (literally, during the show’s sword fights), Poison says the found family is another part of why she pursued her captain’s license and why she continues to call Red Dragon home. It seems, for Poison at least, that maybe the real booty is the mateys you make along the way. Book a cruise on the Red Dragon and you might just find your own mateys in Port Aransas.

Fly It! Port A has been a pillar of high-flying amusement on Mustang Island for over 30 years. From kites and windsocks to toys and beach shades, there’s no store in Port Aransas more devoted to pure fun.

A guide to kiting in Port Aransas

When you walk into Fly It! Port A, you’ll be greeted by a wall of neon wings and highlighter tails, just a fraction of the inventory the store offers for skill levels from newbies to “frequent fliers.” But don’t be overwhelmed—start with this quick guide where Fly It! owners Courtney and Jeremy Timms guide you through some FAQs. You’ll be soaring with confidence in no time!

Start with a Delta! Delta kites are triangle shaped and have a very large wind range in which they fly comfortably. They are known to be very easy flying and steady kites in Port A's constant beach breeze.

44

Different kites for different nights

One direction (the wind, not the band!)

Many novice kite flyers do not realize that each kite has a designed wind range in which the kite will fly the best…you should not expect every kite to be able to fly on every day. Sometimes it’s just not windy enough, but more often (at least here on the beach) there is too much wind for many kites to fly happily.

Port A is your place The constant winds and large areas of open space are perfect for kite flying…If you’re going to pick one place to try flying a kite for the first time, you’ll have a hard time finding a better place to do it.

The perfect kiting day would have steady winds blowing from one direction, and ideally the wind speeds would be between eight and 16 miles per hour.

Record Breaking ...BUT BUILT ON

TRADITION

48

| Fishing

In April 2021, Troy Lancaster reeled in two things off the shore of Port Aransas: an 876-pound Bluefin Tuna and a state record that beat the previous one by more than 50 pounds. Then, in June 2022, spearfisherman Braden Sherron caught a massive Cubera Snapper. Back at Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf, the fish weighed in at 137 pounds and is pending a world record title. These are just two recent record breakers, but the Fishing Capital of Texas has a history of dynamic sportfishing that goes back over 150 years. From the Tarpon that earned Port Aransas its mark in maritime history to the Farley Boats designed specifically for that endeavor, you’d be hard-pressed to find a town more anchored in fishing tradition.

Round Up and Reel In

The Deep Sea Roundup tournament is made up of fishing lines and fishing legends. This year, the tournament celebrates its 90th year! For almost a century, the oldest tournament on the Gulf Coast has defined fishing tradition in Port Aransas and beyond. Deep Sea Roundup started as the Tarpon Rodeo in the 1930s, when abundant Tarpon fishing began drawing anglers from all over the state and beyond…and the tradition has continued ever since. The tournament’s offerings and rules have evolved over the years, but what remains is the commitment to inviting all to come and

enjoy the bountiful fishing the area has to offer. Over the years, tradition has stayed important. Many anglers who participate have been fishing the tournament for generations or have chosen to begin the tradition with their own families. Anglers may hire local fishing guides to help them dip a toe—or cast a line—into tournament waters. It doesn’t matter what type of fishing you like to do—Deep Sea Roundup competition categories include offshore, bay, surf, kayak, and flyfishing! Part of the magic of Deep Sea

Roundup is its special attention to the future of Texas fishing. The piggy perch competition is a favorite part of the weekend when little anglers from toddlers up to tweens fish off the piers and docks of Port Aransas to win a prize. Every member of the family can find their fishing tradition during Deep Sea Roundup! Lasso in a new tradition for your family next tournament season in Port Aransas.

During big tournaments like Billfish Pachanga or Texas Legends Billfish Tournament, the fishing boats leaving the Port Aransas marina are, in a word, beautiful. Their glossy white varnishes stand out against Gulf waters and their chrome finishings sparkle against the Texas sun…but it takes more than looks to reel in the big prizes.

These vessels are built with function top of mind. On the average deep sea fishing trip, they will go 60 to 100 miles offshore and are equipped with plenty of technology to make it possible. Omnidirectional sonar allows for a 360-degree view of the water column under and around the boat to help spot and lock onto target billfish like Marlin. A Seakeeper is a game-changer for motion control on the water, and a series of Garmin marine technologies from chartplotters to radar and communications give anglers the best shot at an award-winning catch. Sportfishing boats are often away from shore for days at a time, so they are also equipped with kitchens, bathrooms, couches—everything you would find in a house to make the journey as comfortable as possible. For example, the Cutter Bill pictured here is a four bedroom, four-and-a-half bath floating home.

Sportfishing isn’t all comfort, though. Each trip out requires several days of preparations that include rigging up bait and tackle, fueling up the boat, collecting provisions, stocking the boat, planning, and cleaning. Still, when you finally reel in that Swordfish or Marlin, it’s a hard feeling to beat. While the Cutter Bill may be a private fishing boat, you can experience that feeling yourself by booking an offshore excursion with Coastal Charters TX, Deep Sea Headquarters, Dolphin Dock, Inc., or Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf on your next trip down to the Fishing Capital of Texas.

Fishing When you think of the dichotomy of fishing in Port Aransas, your mind might go to offshore fishing and inshore fishing. Right off the coast, you can reel in Redfish or gig Flounder. A few dozen miles off the coast, you can reel in Tuna or Marlin. But shift your perspective and you’ll find another kind of fishing dichotomy here…a vertical one.

Spearfishing Spearfishing is a method whereby the angler dives underwater to find their catch, ditching the traditional rod and reel for a speargun. In Port Aransas, the best spearfishing can be found around the north or south jetties on a clear day or offshore close to the oil rigs. If you’re a spearfishing fanatic, grab your fins and snorkel and dive into this unique type of fishing in Port Aransas!

56

| Fishing

Fly Fishing Fly fishing, on the other hand, takes a more “overhead” approach. In this technique, the classic lightweight line and heavy lure are swapped for a heavier line and a nearly weightless lure. This method relies much more on the angler’s ability to cast effectively. For a traditional angler, fly fishing can provide a fun and unique challenge. And it’s a challenge that you can easily learn from guides like Kenjo Fly Fishing Charters and Port Aransas Fly Fishing. Fly high or dive low and you’ll see why Port Aransas is the Fishing Capital of Texas from every angle.

A little bit of grit, a little bit of glamour, and somewhere in there you’ll find an island oasis in South Texas.

COMING UP ROSES A how-to with BlueWater Cowboy’s “Sushi Dave” If you’ve been to BlueWater Cowboy and ordered a boat of sushi, you’ve probably seen a sushi rose. More than likely, you’ve also probably wondered…how did they do that? Sushi Dave is here to explain.

STEP ONE: Select the fish you’d like to roll—in this case, Dave is using fresh Tuna. Choose a narrow piece, because if the fish gets too wide, the “petals” will fold in on themselves.

STEP TWO: Slice the fish thinly and at a slight angle. To make your rose look as realistic as possible, Dave suggests using at least five slices of fish.

STEP THREE: Lay the slices out in a line, overlapping each one about halfway down.

STEP FOUR: Then roll tightly from one end to the other.

STEP FIVE: Combine with other types of fish to create a colorful bouquet!

STEP SIX: Plate and enjoy!

That’s where Chef Matt comes in, and the rest of the group of private chefs who provide services on the island. When you book Chef Matt for a meal, the experience is part meal, part show, and it’s tailored just for you. Brunch with a mimosa bar and gourmet omelets? Sure. Redfish you catch with a fishing guide and your favorite cut of steak for a surf-and-turf experience? Of course. A caviar board? That’s right up Chef Matt’s alley. Maybe it’s a celebration you’re planning, maybe it’s just the cherry on top of a family vacation, but either way, a private dining experience takes “eating in” to a whole new level.

NOBODY WILL HOLD IT AGAINST YOU IF, ONCE YOU ARR IVE IN PORT A , YOU DON’ T WANT TO LEAVE THAT OASIS OF A BEACH HOUSE YOU RENTED FOR THE WEEK, PING PONGING BETWEEN IT AND YOUR FAVORITE SPOT ON THE BEACH. AFTER ALL, IT’S LARGE ENOUGH TO BE COMFORTABLE FOR THE WHOLE GROUP AND PROBABLY HAS A PRIVATE POOL.

But just because you’ve decided to stay in for a night or two doesn’t mean you have to pull out the pots and pans to cook the same old dishes you make at home. Nor should you let that big, beautiful kitchen go to waste by making sandwiches that will get soggy the second you take them out of the bag (or worse, snatched by a gull!).

NO WAIT TIMES, NO HASSLE, JUST A 5-STAR MEAL ON YOUR TIME.

C OC A L SIONS L A R O F Hot take: Flip flops are not just for the beach.

In fact, in Port Aransas it’s fairly common to have flip flops just for beach days and flip flops that will never see the sand. Maybe you have a leather pair designated for dinner plans, a nice thick pair with arch support for the boat, or, as some locals joke, a black pair “for business.” Both pairs seen here are OluKai, a popular brand with islanders who like the ease of a flip flop but with a high-quality make. The white pair with the retro footbed is from BoardHouse Surf & Skate. The white leather makes for a clean look, but the colors are a pop of personality. The light blue pair is from The Dock on Mustang Island and incredibly comfortable for all-day wear. Passionate scientists at the state-of-theart University of Texas Marine Science Institute spend their days conducting groundbreaking research. The work is vital and tough, but the motivation to do the work is ample in Port Aransas. Here, there’s homegrown beauty in every sun-soaked corner of the island. It’s in the first glance of an endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle bobbing along the jetty, it’s in the pods of dolphins following the ships in the channel, and it’s in the miles and miles of nature trails that weave through the Port Aransas Nature Preserve wetlands and beyond.

Do not disturb There’s nothing to do on San José Island. There are no restaurants, no shops, no golf carts. There’s not even a bathroom. There’s nothing to do…and that’s the best part about it. Port Aransas has plenty of activities to keep adventurers busy, but sometimes all you want out of your time off is just that—a beautiful place, nothing on the agenda, and a phone set to “do not disturb.” The “quiet-cation” is the vacation trend that’s sweeping the world, and it’s all about those unplugged days where peace, quiet, and rest take the front seat. If you’ve ever come back from a trip feeling like you need another vacation to recover from your vacation, Port A might be just what you need.

Here are a few of the quietest spots in Port Aransas, places where doing nothing is the whole point: San José Island Take the jetty boat from Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf over to San José Island, colloquially known as St. Jo’s, for the ultimate unplugged experience. The island is a snappy 10-minute boat ride and waiting on its shores is all the nothing you could ask for, as described above. There’s the north jetty for fishing, 21 miles of motorless beachline, and flocks of bird species that find safe haven on San José. This island is Texas, undisturbed. Yoga on the Beach When you’re at home, finding the time to squeeze in your daily yoga practice can be hectic, with distractions caused by calls from work, barking dogs, crying kids, and more. But the beach is a natural place to find zen. Inspirational Yoga Warriors and the Traveling OM takes advantage of the soft crashing of waves to lead you into a blissful practice where you can stretch your body and calm your mind.

Balinese Spa & Boutique The classic definition of relaxation often includes a trip to the spa. You’ll find island vibes and next level pampering at Balinese Spa & Boutique. Opt for an Oxygen Rejuvenating Facial to get a warm and healthy glow or go for an Herbal Thai Ball Massage so the Prai, Ginger, Turmeric, and Lemongrass can relieve pain and inflammation. Just lay there and let the pros take over. Port Aransas Nature Preserve Peace and the Port Aransas Nature Preserve go hand in hand. When you’re on an empty path within feet of a Snowy Egret, silently observing their magnificence, how can you feel anything but amazed? Thousands of native species roam in the protected 1,200+ acres of preserve land. You can meander along the trails or do exactly nothing by stationing yourself at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center’s observation tower to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Alternatively, you can find a less-sandy but equally peaceful environment for a yoga class at The Studio, a space for yoga and wellness in the heart of Port Aransas.

Go ahead, book your trip and then toggle that phone switch—"do not disturb” is just a short drive away.

RAIN

Did you know “seagrasses are more efficient at storing carbon in the soil or sediment, acre for acre, than a tropical rainforest?” The scientists at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) did… because Port Aransas is a beautiful beach destination but also stands apart as a top research center on climate change, marine biology, and more.

Seagrass meadows around Port Aransas provide vital habitat for a variety of species and have the potential to become a powerful tool for slowing the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Dr. Ken Dunton, marine biology professor and Chair of the Department of Marine Science, and Dr. Preston Wilson, engineering professor, are using their decades of ecology experience—and seagrass beds in Port Aransas—to explore innovative ways of measuring carbon storage in seagrass. With quantifiable measurements that require minimal cost and time, agencies can better manage the seagrasses that counteract environmental harm. This seagrass project is just one of many UTMSI researchers are conducting to better the world.

Nurdles are the base material of most plastic products worldwide. These small, plastic pellets pollute beaches and waterways. Photo by Vivian Abagiu, shared courtesy of University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

Another involves studying microplastic pollution’s potential contribution to rising cancer rates. Ultimately, the plan is “develop new tools to detect microplastics, identify biomarkers of plastic exposure to help assess cancer risk, and to inform public health strategies to reduce exposure to microplastics in food and water.” This project, spearheaded by Dr. Zhanfei Liu, is the first of its kind to address the connection.

Graduate students like Georgia Ahumada, pictured here, have the dual benefit of a top-notch research facility and easy access for field work in Port Aransas.

Innovative projects like this are not unprecedented at the university. UTMSI has been leading the way in Southern Flounder research since 1978, when the first-ever captive Southern Flounder spawn took place. Today, that research continues as UTMSI’s Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory works in tandem with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to conserve and recover the fish’s declining population through stock enhancement. Currently, scientists are addressing malpigmentation in Southern Flounder that can prevent them from successfully surviving in the Gulf and beyond. Early gene detection and enriched feeding methods are just a few of the avenues being explored to correct the issue.

The Southern Flounder is one of many species Texas Parks and Wildlife is hard at work conserving—in fact, they recently surpassed one billion fish raised and then released into the wild! Brilliant minds flock to Port Aransas, not just for the views, but for the scientific opportunities that await them at UTMSI. Whether out in the field drilling a sediment core into sand to measure seagrass carbon or in the lab investigating microplastics, UTMSI scientists are making a difference…and they’re doing it right here in beautiful Port Aransas, Texas.

WHERE DOLPHINS

play

Dolphins are known for their playful, joyful natures. They’re also renowned for being one of the more intelligent animals in the world. Put those facts together and it’s only natural that so many of them call the waters around Port Aransas home! The dolphins most commonly found in Port Aransas are Bottlenose Dolphins. The Bottlenose Dolphins found in Texas can grow to about 10 feet long and can live in pods of up to eight dolphins. If you’ve been to Port A before and taken the ferry across to the north end of the island, you may have already been greeted by a pod pirouetting through the ship channel. Visitors with childhood traditions in Port Aransas often describe spotting dolphins while on the ferry as “the moment you knew you were on vacation.” Get up close and personal with these majestic creatures aboard a dolphin watch and sightseeing tour.

| Nature

Scarlet Lady Dolphin Adventures, Woody’s Last Stand–Home of Neptune Charters, and Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf all have dolphin watch tours going out daily. Pro tip: combine the beauty of the colors of the Texas sky with ecotourism when you choose the sunset tour. If you’re hoping for a private cruising experience where you can also spot dolphins leaping, opt for a sailing excursion with No Le Hace Sailing Adventures, a tiki float with Tiki Tours Port Aransas, or a pontoon experience with Salt-Lyf Boat Cruises. Hoping to squeeze in one more spotting before you leave? Head to Roberts Point Park. The park has an excellent vantage point from which to view Port A’s dolphins as they play in ships’ wakes. For your next vacation, choose the place where dolphins play. Choose Port A!

Who doesn’t want to get a little lost on vacation? There’s a transcendent sort of magic that happens when you are in a place where you can lose track of time and space without a worry. In Port Aransas, one of the easiest places to do that is in the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. With four sites and a network of interwoven trails, the Nature Preserve is the ideal place to “get lost.” The Salt Island Trail in Charlie’s Pasture, for example, is two miles of meandering path that goes around an island within an island. It’s the perfect place to step outside of yourself and refocus on the grounding elements of Port A’s coastal environment. On this trail, you’ll brush along the ship channel, then dip inland to follow the wetlands until you reach Salt Island. While you walk, breathe deep and take in the native flora and fauna abundant in the preserve. Back at the starting point, you can choose from miles and miles more of hiking and biking trails just waiting to be traversed.

| Nature

Observation towers, gazebos, and benches throughout the Port Aransas Nature Preserve’s many trails provide an oasis for rest, meditation, and quiet observation. Keep a special eye open to spy some of Port A’s favorite residents—bird species like the Roseate Spoonbill and the Great Blue Heron.

If you’re lucky and you time it right, you may even be able to spot the endangered Whooping Cranes when they migrate here for the winter. It's hard not to find joy in the gentle flap of wings and quiet hum of life in the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. In the great outdoors, problems fade away and solutions become clear…because taking care of nature is taking care of yourself.
