This fact becomes especially relevant in Peru, identified as one of the most threatened countries of the planet.

From immemorial times to now, the melting glaciers of the Nor Yauyos range and its snow covered peaks –with heights surpassing the 5000 meters over sea level- continue to feed a crystal clear system of lakes which constitute the birth place of the Cañete River. From this extreme Andean altitude, the river cuts a valley on the heart itself of the mountains, descending for more than 200 kilometers before it reaches the Pacific Ocean. The ancient Peruvian cultures knew how to rationally benefit from the diverse ecosystems and different altitudinal floors, successfully adapting crops and laboriously building agricultural terraces and irrigation systems.

ITINERARY: Día 1: Lima-Lunahuaná.

We leave from Lima city in the first hours of the afternoon for Lunahuana, at 170 kilometers of Lima, the most important town at the lower course of the Cañete River. After visiting its main plaza we check in at one of the many hotels that exist at the river shores.

Día 2: Lunahuana-Miraflores- Huaqui ruins (Nor Yauyos- Cochas Protected Area).

After an early breakfast we take the road that follows the river course in an upstream direction.

Very soon the valley becomes narrower, the mountains at its flanks become a lot higher and a succession of numerous stone made terraces will tell us that we are coming in the former territories of the Yawyo pre-inca civilization, and inside the boundaries of the Nor YauyosCochas Scenic Reserved Area. After visiting the Reserve Interpretation Center we will continue a few more kilometers and arrive to the small town of Miraflores, starting point of our hike to the ruins of Huaqui. Guided by a group of young locals and using a pack of lamas to carry our lunch, we will head for the ruins and walk for approximately one hour.

Discovered at the beginning of the XVII century by Spanish missionaries, the ancient town of Huaquis use to be one of the most important villages of the pre-inca Yawyo confederation. It was from Huaquis that Catholicism was introduce to rest of the upper valley, and still today, the walls and bell tower of the church, stand as the dominant structure of all. From Huaquis, built over a solid mountain shoulder, the visitor has an outstanding view over the surrounding mountain ridges, while the river, hundreds of meters below, its seen as a silver shining belt.

Much closer, are the hundreds of andenes (stone made terraces) used by its long gone inhabitants for cultivation. After lunch we will return to Miraflores and drive back to our hotel in Lunahuana.

Día 3: Rafting en Lunahuana-Lima.

To round the experience, we will descend this morning a section of the river not far from our hotel in Lunahuana. The rapids are of moderate difficulty and our professional staff of guides and first quality equipment guarantee an exciting but safe experience while enjoy an insight view of the river environment. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and visit a traditional Pisco distillery, just before we drive back to Lima.
