2. Peace, Love & Trout is the theme

for the 15th Annual Trout Parade in Livingston Manor. Held the second Saturday in June this gathering is not to be missed. Break out your tie-dye, on June 8 2019, this Mardi Gras-style parade will bring out your “innerhippie” Both marchers and observers alike are encouraged to dress up in

1969-era clothing or trout & aquatic creatures to participate in the festive atmosphere of the day. The giant, 20-foot-long reticulated trout, created by the late puppet-maker and sculptor Bud Wertheim, is carried aloft by at least six volunteers as a traditional centerpiece celebrating the area’s trout fishing heritage.

3. Although there are many

modern amenities in this part of the Catskills, there are also many throwbacks to days gone by that’ll leave you charmed. The Callicoon Center Band has been giving free concerts in the bandstand on this hamlet’s main drag every Wednesday night each summer for 85 years. Just 10 minutes from either Livingston Manor or Roscoe.

The Thrill from the Top

We’re so lucky to have fabulous hiking choices nearby, so that everyone from beginners to experienced hikers can enjoy a Catskill adventure in our backyard.

Though there are many beginner hikes, this year my top pick is more challenging and very rewarding. Let me tell you about the hike to Balsam Lake Mountain and its historic fire tower, which will be celebrating its centennial this year. I love it for the combination of amazing views, enchanting balsam fir at the summit, and rich local history.

New York’s very first fire tower was built on Balsam Lake Mountain’s summit in 1887. The first steel tower was built in 1919 and its 100-anniversary will be celebrated the weekend of August 2-4, 2019.

(Stay tuned for details in the neighboring communities of Livingston Manor and Margaretville, NY.) Since many young people aren’t familiar with why a fire tower was needed, imagine that you’re the “observer” and it’s your job to spot a forest fire in the vast Catskill Park from the cab at the top of the tower.

This is how Catskill forests were protected for almost a century. Five towers, including Balsam Lake Mountain, have been renovated and now have volunteers at the summits to welcome you from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. To get to the trailhead, take the scenic Beaverkill Road to its very end (21 miles from Old Rt. 17). It’s exciting to arrive at the dead end of a road in the 12

middle of a forest for an historic hike! Though the ascent trail has been described as a “rock scramble” which deters many beginners, we found that taking stops along the way up enables lots of folks, including children who like climbing things, to enjoy the outing.

Here are some basic facts about the hike, with a list of resources for more detailed information. Balsam Lake Mountain is the most westerly of the 35 Catskill peaks over 3500’ at 3729’ above sea level.

There are 2 trailheads, the closest being at the end of the Beaverkill Road, northeast of Lew Beach. You can hike up and back on the same trail for a total of 3.4 miles. The elevation gain is 1200’, past a natural spring and lean-to to a summit with picnic tables, an outhouse, and an observer cabin. My knees prefer a trail loop that is 4.4 miles long and more of a triangle. I follow the trail that heads downhill just east of the tower with a Continued on page 44

Take Route 206 north (direction of Downsville) for 2.4 miles, then turn left onto Morton Hill Road and follow for 3.1 miles to Russell Brook Road on left. There are numerous other falls in the area that the staff at Morgan Outdoors, 46 Main Street, LM, can direct you to.

58. We are home to not one, not two, but three covered bridges.

Two — the VanTran (1860) and the Bendo (1860) — span the Willowemoc creek. The other — the renovated Beaverkill (1865) — crosses the Beaverkill above Roscoe. See the bridges: The Vantran is located on Covered Bridge Road, Livingston Manor, just off County Road 179. There is a small park here with picnic tables. To get to the Bendo at the Covered Bridge Campsite, drive 7.5 miles out of Livingston Manor on

Catskill Rivers Back in Print

The newest edition of Catskill Rivers has a foreword by fellow fly-fisherman Dan Rather.

Catskill Rivers by Austin McK. Francis is the story of the “birthplace of the American fly fishing”. Readers will discover this birthplace in such hallowed trout streams as the Beaverkill, the Willowemoc, the Neversink, the Delaware, the Esopus, and the Schoharie. While originally published in 1983, Catskill Rivers remains the definitive study of these fabled waters and the remarkable people who created the American fly-fishing tradition.

84. Birdwatching, it’s a thing… spectators come from near and far simply to catch a glimpse and even a photograph of the plethora of American bald eagles, ospreys, blue herons, and red-tailed hawks in the area, not to mention bluebirds, cardinals, chickadees, and so many others.

the Little Pond state campground has lots of amenities, from campsite and picnic areas to a nice beachfront on the Little Pond lake. But the locals know another spot just up the way.

refreshing dip, launch a boat, or wet your fishing line. Follow Beaverkill Road approximately 7 miles to Lew Beach; turn left at the Little Pond sign and keep going a mile or so to Big Pond on your right.

There are two short uphill loops: 6/10-mile loop with historic overlook, views of Willowemoc Creek and Main Street, and 2/10-mile upper loop to the summit. Both are well-marked. A welcoming trailhead sign includes a map. Elevation change may be too strenuous for some. No designated parking lot for this Town of Rockland walkable community initiative. Pick up a walking tour brochure from the Town Hall, the Livingston Manor Free Library, or Morgan Outdoors for directions — and Walk On!

95. The stately brick Colonial Revival 1938 Livingston Manor Central School is an architectural gem with a picturesque brick overlaid walkway from Main Street to the school’s central cupola clock tower, newly covered in copper.

The Roscoe School is another New Deal era wonder.

99. With some of the most scenic roads -– Shandelee, De Bruce, Beaverkill (a little longer than others) – the Roscoe-Livingston Manor region of the Sullivan Catskills is crisscrossed by meandering, lovely country roads.

Take a leisurely drive through the mountains and farms that dot the area, and take in the views and wildlife all around. Valleys, lakes, streams, birds, deer, sheep, cows, and alpacas sedately munching on greenery – these things and more await your discovery as you take a relaxing drive around.

Our favorite time – early October, the fiery-colored spectacle of fall mountain leaves should not be missed.

We’ve got trains and so much more! The Roscoe O & W Railway Museum is also about the history of local people. One such person was Irving Berlin who touched millions of lives with the popular lyrics he created. He was an avid fisherman who chose to spend much of his life

in Lew Beach and we celebrated him and the 100th anniversary of his song God Bless America at our annual fundraising dinner in 2018.

Exhibits to wander and marvel over include a fully operational 7’x32’ interactive and educational “O” scale railroad featuring the engines and rolling stock of the NY O & W Railway and the industries that it supported in Sullivan County; antique toy trains from 1912 to 1940; an electric train and a wooden train layout for youngsters to operate; The American Civil War

To Arms! Sons of Sullivan and Orange County go to War,” with a roster on hand to research and discover if your ancestors fought with the 56th New York Volunteers; and “Toys from 1900-1970” that includes an interactive Hot Wheels race.

The museum strives to portray the human story behind the exhibits.

They are very interested in stories and tales of all local persons that made an impact in the rural hamlets in our area.
