Immerse yourself in the heart of Herriot Country with a visit to the World of James Herriot, the restored site of the legendary vet’s 1940s home and practice in Thirsk; discover the potions used to treat poorly pets, learn about veterinary practices (in some very hands-on ways!) and explore a recreated set from the popular BBC series, All Creatures Great and Small. In Knaresborough, explore Mother Shipton’s Cave and marvel at the Petrifying Well, where everyday objects slowly transform into stone as they soak in its mineral-rich waters. Keep young imaginations in check by visiting Ripon’s atmospheric Victorian museums; at the Prison & Police Museum examine real cells, period uniforms and the tools of law enforcement; listen to dramatic tales of the accused and witness the courtroom’s original dock at the Courthouse Museum; and in the Victorian Workhouse Museum follow the harsh realities faced by the poor and the lawless under the workhouse regime. Enjoy a scenic drift downstream in a rowing boat on the River Nidd, or hop on two wheels to explore the Beryl Burton Cycleway, a traffic-free route threading together fields and woodland from Knaresborough through Harrogate and beyond. North Yorkshire’s sweet scene is irresistible. At Bettys Café Tea Rooms in Harrogate, Northallerton and York you’ll find the iconic Fat Rascal, a golden, fruit-studded scone sporting a playful almond and cherry grin, and an Afternoon Tea that’s pure indulgence. In Whitby, Botham’s bakery draws fans with its legendary lemon buns – rich, sultana-studded dough finished with tangy icing. No trip to the coast is complete without an ice cream, you’ll find local ice cream makers across the county.

Fine dining

Treat yourself to a truly special meal at restaurants which prize North Yorkshire’s stunning produce. Chef’s Table, the brainchild of Josh Barnes at Swinton Estate, pairs fine dining with the very best ingredients for an intimate eight-course menu; sustainability and seasonality are at the heart of everything for head chef Adam Westgarth at The Pheasant Hotel in Harome. In Masham, you can tour the ever-popular Black Sheep Brewery to see beer-making in action, while Theakstons Brewery also has its home here. Down on the coast, Whitby Distillery has earned awards for its sea-inspired gin and rum, while Whitby Brewery pours a rotating selection of craft ales, stouts and lagers. In Filey, The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery produces a beautifully balanced single malt whisky; and tucked into Nidderdale’s rolling hills, the family-run Whittaker’s Distillery distils globally lauded gin, vodka and whisky. Over in Harrogate, The Spirit of Harrogate captures local botanicals in every bottle, offering a truly Yorkshire tipple; while in Malton, Rare Bird Distillery craft their Mediterranean-inspired gin.

At The Brasserie, my approach is to keep things honest, seasonal and deeply rooted in our surroundings here in Sandsend. With the North Sea on our doorstep and the North York Moors just behind us, I couldn’t ask for a better larder to cook from. I’ve always been inspired by the landscapes I grew up around in Devon and Cornwall and it feels special to now bring that same respect for produce to North Yorkshire. Working with local fishermen, farmers and growers is what makes this place special. Our day-boat fish comes in fresh from Whitby, rare-breed meats are reared just a few miles inland, and much of our fruit, herbs and vegetables are harvested from Saltmoore’s own no-dig kitchen garden. When produce is this good, my job is to step back and let it shine. The Brasserie itself is designed to feel relaxed yet refined. There’s a real sense of calm here, from the green tones of the interiors to the views across the gardens and down to the coast. Guests can settle in for a long Sunday roast with family, a celebratory dinner, or even just a glass of wine and some small plates on the terrace. Since opening, it’s been hugely rewarding to see The Brasserie recognised by The Good Food Guide and the Michelin Guide. For me, the greatest recognition is hearing from guests who feel they’ve had a true taste of Yorkshire, food that reflects this coastline, this landscape and the people who make it possible.

Take a Hike

North Yorkshire’s ever-changing terrain and sweeping vistas make it a walker’s paradise, with routes suited to every ability. Longdistance enthusiasts can tackle the 53-mile Nidderdale Way, looping through sleepy villages and rolling countryside; the 109-mile Cleveland Way National Trail, which stitches together heather-clad moorland and dramatic clifftops; or the 268-mile Pennine Way, cutting through the heart of the Dales. The Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside are among the best-known hills in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Every year thousands come to reach the top of at least one or to conquer all three in one go. While Richmond marks the midpoint of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Trail – pick up your Coast to Coast Passport to record each stage as you go, until the end point at Robin Hood’s Bay. For gentler rambling, the Malham Landscape Trail treats you to a waterfall, a striking gorge, sculpted limestone outcrops and a peaceful tarn. In Dalby Forest, 13 waymarked paths wind across 8,000 acres of mixed woodland, offering varied options for walkers, cyclists or runners. Deep in the Yorkshire Dales, a four-mile circular stroll delivers spectacular views of the Ribblehead Viaduct. Thanks to schemes like the North York Moors Mobility Tramper hire and a network of accessible trails like Miles for Stiles, everyone can savour North Yorkshire’s great outdoors. Even four-legged friends are free to bound along the sands at Filey, Hunmanby Gap, Cayton Bay, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay’s dog-friendly beaches all year round.

Scarborough’s coast caters to every wave rider! North Bay delivers powerful swells for seasoned surfers, Filey’s gentle breaks suit beginners and intermediates, Cayton Bay’s versatile waves welcome both surfers and stand-up paddleboarders, and Runswick Bay is perfect for kayak excursions. At North Yorkshire Water Park near Scarborough, abseiling, wakeboarding, zip lines, low ropes, climbing and more await the intrepid adventurer! Inland, Nidderdale’s 20m-deep How Stean Gorge is home to Yorkshire’s only Via Ferrata; while Kilnsey Crag’s dramatic limestone face, and the ancient Norber Erratics are musts for rock climbing enthusiasts. Get a real feel for the Dales with Farm Adventure Yorkshire’s Ultimate Farmer Experience, where you can have a go at sheep gathering, tractor driving and pig herding. For a different perspective, lift off with Sherburn Aero Club, Yorkshire’s largest flying club, for a bird’s-eye perspective on the region’s beauty. There’s guided meditation, forest bathing, reiki drumming and a safe wild-swim platform at Swinton Estate. For a luxury spa day, Saltmoore in Sandsend delivers a coastal wellness sanctuary; near Malton, Dewars Restaurant & Rooms promise a blissful escape with unique rooms and a revitalising outdoor pool; and The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa near Skipton is home to the Nàdarra Spa, where organic treatments and outdoor relaxation are at one with the beautiful surroundings – the estate also offer clay pigeon shooting, archery and a thrilling Land Rover Experience.

Whether you’re chasing rugged singletrack, planning a family pedal or enjoying a gentle e-bike spin, there’s a route to suit your style. At the core of it all is the Moor to Sea cycle network – 150 miles winding through moorland and coastline. You can tackle the entire route or pick out bite-sized sections like the Cinder Track between Scarborough and Whitby, where stunning sea views accompany every mile. Mountain bikers will love the Gravel Explorer routes throughout the North York Moors National Park – try the easy Moorland Meander to capture the wild open feel of the Moors, or the rewarding Hambleton Horizon 50km gravel track which blasts past the ‘finest view in England’. A former railway line, the Nidderdale Greenway is a blissfully traffic-free four-mile meander from Bilton in North Harrogate to Knaresborough and on to Ripley. Another great option is the Selby to York route, perfect for families and novice cyclists. In the Yorkshire Dales, the 12-mile Swale Trail links Reeth and Keld, offering adventurous families fun offroad riding; while Stainburn Forest near Harrogate tests experienced riders.

Don’t forget to venture out after dark; both the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks are amazing International Dark Sky Reserves, where the Milky Way, planets and even the Northern Lights are often visible to the naked eye. Hollywood royalty Tom Cruise also descended on North Yorkshire for his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 film; the railway line around Goathland stood in for Norway during a fight scene; while Grosmont station welcomed Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones in the Dial of Destiny. The wide-open scenery of Buttertubs Pass will be familiar to viewers of All Creatures Great and Small; Newby Hall has featured in All Creatures Great and Small, Victoria (Carlton Towers also featured in this series) and Gentleman Jack. Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales was a filming location for the 2003 Calendar Girls movie starring Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and Celia Imrie. While Wallace and Gromit may not have stepped foot on hallowed North Yorkshire ground, a visit to Wensleydale for some cheese tasting would definitely get their approval! The film adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” starring Margot Robbie as Cathy and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff was primarily filmed in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, including Arkengarthdale, Swaledale and the village of Low Row.

CAR-FREE EXPLORATION North York Moors and the surrounding area has a good network of rail and bus services, serving many of the main towns and villages. The handy Moorsbus runs from May to September on weekends and bank holidays to many villages throughout the area, including Hutton-le-Hole, Danby, Thornton-le-Dale and Malton. The Esk Valley Railway connects the rural communities in the North York Moors with Teesside and Whitby.

There are 48 train stations served by cross-country trains in York, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Northallerton, Malton, Selby, Thirsk, Settle, Skipton, Whitby and Scarborough, with the East Coast Mainline (LNER), Grand Central, TransPennine, Northern Rail, Cross Country and Hull Trains routes some of the most direct. Sometimes the journey is the best part of a trip; take scenic rail journeys on the heritage North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which calls in at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont, or enjoy a journey from Cumbria to the Yorkshire Dales on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which traverses the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Near Skipton, take a nostalgic four-mile journey on the heritage Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Enjoy afternoon tea or evening dining experiences while watching the lush countryside roll by.

Most of North Yorkshire’s market towns, coastal resorts and natural attractions are easily accessible by bus, making travelling by bus an affordable and scenic option. In addition, DalesBus and Moorsbus provide seasonal weekend and bank holiday bus services into and around the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks and Nidderdale and Howardian Hills National Landscapes. Many parts of North Yorkshire have good links by bus and train with towns and cities in the surrounding areas, making it easy to travel into transport hubs as well as getting around once you are here. DRIVING

The A1(M) and A19 are the busiest and quickest routes to North Yorkshire, running through the middle of the county. Other roads of note include the A171, which will take you along the coastal towns and villages; the scenic A64 travels betweven York and the coast; and the A170 skirts the southern end of the North York Moors National Park. In the west, take the A61 between Harrogate and Thirsk; the A59 leads between Harrogate and Skipton; and the A65 along the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
