Farm shops like Fodder at Harrogate’s Great Yorkshire Showground work with farmers and producers to showcase fresh and tasty local delights, and you can taste the region’s dairy heritage direct from the source at Wensleydale Creamery Experience and Settle’s award-winning Courtyard Dairy.

Local bakery institution Botham’s of Whitby is famous for their lemon buns, while the iconic Bettys in Harrogate and Northallerton is the place to try a Fat Rascal scone or an indulgent afternoon tea.

Dalby Forest’s paths wind across 8,000 acres of mixed woodland; wild moorland spills into steep river valleys in Nidderdale National Landscape; while the Howardian Hills National Landscape’s Jurassic limestone foundations are home to geological marvels.

Exploring on two wheels? The Moor to Sea cycle network offers 150 miles of scenic moorland and coastline; the Cinder Track between Scarborough and Whitby shows off the best of the coast; Nidderdale Greenway’s former railway line is a relaxed meander; and the Yorkshire Dales’ 12-mile Swale Trail offers adventurous off-road riding.

Celebrating its 400th year as Britain’s original seaside resort, Scarborough’s twin bays offer amusements, cafés, cliff-top gardens and breathtaking views. Relax in Peasholm Park, meet the animals at Humble Bee Farm, get wet and wild at North Yorkshire Water Park, or learn about fused glass at the Stained Glass Centre.

Enjoy Whitby’s Gothic drama by climbing the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey’s ruins, discover maritime heritage at the Captain Cook Museum, learn about ocean critters at the Marine Discovery Centre then take a trip with Whitby Coastal Cruises.

Shake some Whitby Sea Salt on your fish and chips from Whitby’s Quayside, Royal Fisheries and Fish Box, or Ingham’s Fish Restaurant in Filey. Wash it all down with a tipple from Filey Distillery.

Filey’s five miles of golden sand are overlooked by the rocky promontory of Filey Brigg. Watch expert flyers at the annual Kite Festival or visit during quarterly food festivals to taste the region’s bounty.

There are more golden sands at Hunmanby Gap; while Staithes’ artists and fisherfolk are celebrated at the annual arts and heritage festival; go fossil hunting in Robin Hood’s Bay and Runswick Bay; and take in the natural beauty of Sandsend.

Walking and cycling routes include the Cinder Track from Scarborough to Whitby, the 109-mile Cleveland Way and Wainwright’s celebrated Coast to Coast.

RSPB BEMPTON CLIFFS

30 minutes by car from Scarborough and 10 minutes from Bridlington. Just over a mile from Bempton Railway Station on the Hull to Scarborough line.

One of the UK’s top wildlife attractions, home to almost half a million seabirds from April to July including puffins (until mid-July) and gannets (until October). Safe, cliff-edge viewing platforms offer stunning views all year round. When the seabirds are away, we are still open for wild walks and the chance of owls, geese and winter finches. Pop into the Visitor Centre for a drink and a snack and wander around the shop where you can try and buy binoculars and telescopes, as well as gifts and souvenirs. Events and activities throughout the year, from seabird cruises to guided walks and seasonal trails – see QR Code. Mobility scooters are available free but must be booked in advance through the events pages.

THE GREEN DRAGON INN AT HARDRAW

The historic Green Dragon at Hardraw epitomises a traditional North Country inn. The pub, partly from the 13th century, lies amid stunning scenery in upper Wensleydale and is frequented by locals and visitors who are drawn to its old-world charm.
