Our a TYNEMOUTH LONGSANDS

Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and Cullercoats all boast award-winning beaches. They are part of daily life here and used every day of the year for anything from walking, jogging and building sandcastles to fitness bootcamps, surf competitions and Premiership football training. Our coastline is a social hub. Tynemouth is the place to be if you want to pull on a wetsuit and take your first surfing lesson. You could also try stand-up paddle boarding or go on a kayak safari.

ST. MARY’S LIGHTHOUSE

Whitley Bay provides an interactive family outing to the coast, with arcades, a skate park, rockpooling and beach. There are award-winning fish and chips and ice cream too. Playhouse Whitley Bay has many family shows and Whitley Park has a play area with water activities for children. The famous Spanish City is set for major regeneration. The Spanish City Plaza has been created outside the Dome and has already hosted a major food festival and international street entertainment. North Shields Fish Quay is a working port and an excellent way of passing an hour or two. Grab some fresh fish and chips, take a seat overlooking the River Tyne and watch vessels of all shapes and sizes glide slowly by. The Quay has attracted some of the regions best culinary talent and there is a hub of tasty treats to be found. Check out the Old Low Light - a new facility run by volunteers celebrating the history and heritage of the area.

FITNESS BOOTCAMP

Cyclists tackle the Coast2Coast route that ends in Tynemouth with a tradition for dipping the bicycle’s tyres into the water’s edge now firmly in place. CULLERCOATS BAY

BLUE REEF AQUARIUM

Explore Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum for an insight into the days of the Roman Empire and Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or step back in time with views over the River Tyne on a visit to Tynemouth Priory and Castle, the burial place of the Kings and Saints of Northumbria. Waves in Whitley Bay offers sports, fitness and spa facilities with lots of water-based fun including water slides, a wave machine and a pirate ship. Get eye to eye with over 40 species of aquatic life, tropical sharks, seals, sea lions and miniature monkeys at Blue Reef Aquarium. St. Mary’s Lighthouse has stood as a beacon on the North East coast since 1898 and the area around it is popular with rockpoolers. There’s an opportunity to climb all 137 steps for spectacular views out to sea. You might even spot a seal or two.

SKATE PARK, WHITLEY BAY

Family attractions Our four award-winning sandy beaches are a magnet for residents and visitors all year round with places to grab fish and chips and ice cream close by. If that wasn’t enough, there’s Wet’n’Wild Water Park, Lost World Mini Golf, Whitley Bay Mini Golf, Rising Sun Country Park and Stephenson Railway Museum. The bustling weekend markets at Tynemouth Station have dozens of stalls from nostalgic treasures and memorabilia to local food producers and pop-ups from local entrepreneurs. Royal Quays Outlet Centre sells big brands at low prices, and Boundary Mill provides a vast range of clothing and homeware all under one roof. Our town centres feature independent retailers with in-depth knowledge of carefully selected products and everyday essentials. Silverlink is a busy retail park with big names like Marks and Spencer and H&M. That’s where you’ll find our 10-screen ODEON cinema along with Pizza Hut, Nando’s and more. Retail heavyweights Eldon Square and Metro Centre are just a short journey away.

At night An evening stroll along the coast to see the hardiest surfers grabbing their last wave of the day with ships on the distant horizon is a must and, if you’re very lucky, you might even see the Northern Lights near St. Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay. As with most destinations there’s a good choice of places to eat and drink. The Trip Advisor website carries reviews from locals and visitors so check that out to see where the current flavours of the month are. A film at the ODEON, a show at the Playhouse or Priory Theatre, a band at the Surf Cafe, food and drink in Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats or the Fish Quay – just take time to relax and enjoy your time here. A little further afield, you could add in a night out in NewcastleGateshead too. Stay in North Tyneside and get the Metro to the Theatre Royal, Metro Radio Arena, Academy or the Sage Gateshead.

Our heritage

OLD LOW LIGHT, NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY

Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum in Wallsend draws visitors from around the world as part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. The gateway to Hadrian's Wall, it is the most excavated fort along the wall and features an imposing 35 metre viewing tower and a large interactive museum. Tynemouth Priory and Castle stands guard at the mouth of the River Tyne. With its 2000-year history, you can discover all the things that happened there and imagine what life might have been like all those years ago. The Old Low Light on North Shields Fish Quay celebrates the history and heritage of the working quay, still said to be the largest prawn landing dock in the country. 12

TYNEMOUTH VOLUNTEER LIFE BRIGADE WATCH HOUSE

SEGEDUNUM ROMAN FORT

Cullercoats was popular with artists who drew inspiration from the dramatic coastal scenery, often using fishing as a theme. Winslow Homer, one of America’s leading artists, spent some time living in Cullercoats and many of his works hang in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries.

“WINSLOW HOMER: ON THE SANDS, 1881” (NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, WASHINGTON)

North Tyneside has strong links with the birth of the railways. The Stephenson Railway Museum was opened in 1986 to house the railway collections of Tyne and Wear Museums. Its name commemorates George and Robert Stephenson, the famous father and son who pioneered the steam railway. The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, established in 1864, was the first of its type in the world and still operates today. The Watch House contains relics from shipwrecks and rescue missions. It is overlooked by the towering statue of Admiral Lord Collingwood, dedicated to the man who took over from Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.

NEWCASTLE QUAYSIDE NIGHTLIFE

North East England has wonderful coastline and countryside, historic castles, lots of art and culture, endless nightlife opportunities and superb shopping. Vibrant NewcastleGateshead – just 20 minutes by Metro from the coast – is well known for its shopping and nightlife. It also offers a wealth of must-see attractions including the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, The Sage Gateshead music venue, the famous bridges arching over the River Tyne, the Great North Museum and St James’ Park – the home of Newcastle United FC. Whether your journey takes you up to Northumberland or south of the river there are plenty of popular attractions to keep you busy. Holy Island, Bamburgh, the Cheviot Hills, Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden, Durham Cathedral, Beamish and Kielder Water are just a taster, and all are within approximately an hour’s drive. Getting around North Tyneside and beyond is made easy by the Tyne and Wear Metro system. Newcastle Central Station and Newcastle International Airport are around 30 minutes away and many taxi drivers have excellent knowledge of the North East’s history and attractions with some offering special tours around the region.
