Food and Drink

We’ve got some of the region’s best street food for you to try at this year’s festival. Anyone attending the music concerts at Tynemouth Priory and Castle can enjoy food from our independent street food traders serving globally influenced artisan food, but sourced and produced locally. There’s a fully stocked festival bar with top beers, wine and Prosecco ready to go.

Concert attendees can bring their own food and drink in reasonable quantities but no glass is allowed. 10

ACTIC – KIDDY RIDE PATROL These American-style motorcycle cops from Holland will be on patrol along Front Street. Walk too fast and you could be pulled over!

PLUNGE BOOM – VEGETABLE NANNIES The Vegetable Nannies have taken their young vegetables out of the ground for a day trip. If you see an old pram brimming with some beautiful bouncing baby vegetables, come over, say hello and maybe lend a hand in feeding and taking care of the little family.

BOMBAY BAJA Bombay Baja Brass Band are Europe’s leading Indian brass band. They have their own unique style, combining popular Indian melodies with the powerful rhythms of the dhol drum.

PLUNGE BOOM – SMOKE You might notice a man in the crowd with smoke creeping out of the bottom of his trouser leg. What starts as a tiny wisp ends up as an allconsuming plume. Can you help him out before he disappears completely?

SID BOWFIN – THE SID BOWFIN SHOW Making his first bow as compere of the Cabaret Stage is Sid Bowfin, an entertainer who combines madcap comedy with superb musicianship. The Sid Bowfin Show is his own unique take on audience participation, featuring such highlights as Mozart’s one-legged Rondo!

DUO LOOKY – THE HAPPY HOUR SHOW Ya-Ya and Gal are Duo Looky. Their mobile bar doesn’t dispense drinks - instead they mix the coolest circus tricks with spicy humour to win the love of their audience!

CIRQUE TANGO – UN TANGO MAS Dario Ayala and Laura Del Mar present Un Tango Mas (One Tango More), a show that fuses beautiful aerial skills with the passionate music and steps of Argentina’s national dance, the tango. 12

MIMBRE – LIFTED Mimbre make a welcome return to the Festival with their new show Lifted. What does it mean when one person is carried by another? Or when a person doesn’t want to be carried? Or when three people find the perfect balance?

HELEN EASTMAN – BICYCLE BOY A bicycle powered musical, for children aged 6-10 and their families. Sam and Mike loved their bikes as kids and spent a lot of time pretending to be superheroes. Now they’re grown up and have to clear out their grandad’s bicycle workshop – and need some help! MAX CALAF SEVE – DIP Dip is a fast-paced, light-hearted trampoline and live music show. The three performers showcase a range of skills that include acrobatics, free running, music-making, dance, juggling and comedy.

WET PICNIC – THE APERITIF Greedy Lord Gredus is preparing for his annual ball and has decided to offer some members of the audience a taste of the high life. After meeting his lordship, three groups of guests put on headphones and are each assigned their own waiter. They are meant to be taught some etiquette and manners, but the waiters have ideas of their own that Gredus wouldn’t approve of! The performance is a playful take on a silent disco, with the audience taking centre stage. 13

FAR FROM THE NORM – H.O.H. Through hip hop dance theatre, H.O.H. explores the connection between multicultural British people and the nation’s favourite sport, football. Expect fast-paced footwork, thrilling vitality and flamboyant characters who communicate on the wider issues that are happening in modern society.

GEORGE WILLIAMS - WIRED From the comfort of his own bedroom, George is in touch with all that is special to him: music, games, the world wide web and more. The line between entertainment and distraction has never been so blurred. It’s hard to focus when you’re this wired. In 2015 George became the first dancer with a learning disability to successfully audition for the National Youth Dance Company. Produced by Tin Arts.

BECKI PARKER HUNTING FOR THE UNICORN In this dance performance, Becki explores her personal journey as an autistic person, from childhood to the artist she is becoming. Through her circumspect and elegant movements, she draws the public into her world and allows them to glimpse for themselves life as it is experienced by a person with autism. Produced by Tin Arts.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MUFTI GAMES – ROMANS! Mufti Games presents a colossal play event for young and old, rooted in ancient Rome. Challenge your inner Centurion, play 3,000-year-old board games and take part in Gladiatorial ROCK PAPER SCISSORS (to the death!) in their ‘Mini Coliseum.’ A team of expert facilitators will show you how. ‘Out of this World’ SATURDAY 13TH JULY FROM 11.15AM KINGS PRIORY FIRST SCHOOL Hundreds of local schoolchildren will take over Front Street as around 20 schools, community groups, musicians and artists mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing. Visitors can expect to see some beautiful parade costumes crafted in school workshops, along with dance moves led by LP Dance in Education. Produced by SALTo Arts in partnership with North Tyneside Music Education Hub, the pageant includes dozens of young musicians, samba from the MEH drummers and a local carnival cantina band.

RENDEZVOUS JAZZ This popular 6-piece has a wide repertoire including traditional, New Orleans and Dixieland Jazz, as well as blues and ballads. BROADWAY MELODY The 6-piece band will be playing a wide range of music from New Orleans, classic and mainstream jazz and swing. THE VIEUX CARRÉ JAZZMEN The Vieux Carré play and sing a mixed programme of popular music from the 1920s and 1930s including rags, marches, blues and spirituals. CLASSIC SWING Six piece band and vocalist playing an entertaining selection of jazz, specialising in 1930s swing.

RUTH LAMBERT TRIO Classic jazz featuring vocalist Ruth Lambert, guitarist and bassist. A great repertoire of popular songs. MAINE STREET JAZZMEN A dedicated team of musicians who play an exciting brand of Dixieland jazz, drawing influences not only from classic American jazz groups but British bands too. THE LEVEE RAMBLERS A wide mix of jazz consisting of trumpet, clarinet, banjo and bass. ZOE GILBY QUARTET A powerful collection of songs delivered with a commanding mix of musical sophistication and dramatic edge. An engaging repertoire of storytelling and atmosphere, the music also includes an adventurous blend of contemporary composers from Kate Bush to Pink Floyd. 23
