POP CULTURE IN MUNCIE You’ve heard of us, now...
Muncie has long been a Midwestern mecca of pop culture, leaving a surprising mark on television, movies, and more. Whether through Garfield’s dry sense of humor, Bob Ross’ calming landscapes and inspiring advice, or its numerous TV and movie shoutouts, this Indiana city has secured its place as an icon in the entertainment world.
Garfield Face the Fat Cat
One of Muncie’s most famous icons is Garfield, the lasagna-loving, Mondayhating fat cat created by Jim Davis. A native of nearby Fairmount, Indiana, Jim headquartered his company in Muncie for decades. Garfield, which debuted in 1978, has become the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world, spawning TV shows, movies, merchandise, and an enduring legacy across generations. Muncie’s influence on the feline is undeniable—Jim based much of Garfield’s world on his own Midwest upbringing.

Bob Ross
Find Your Inner Artist
For fans of soothing landscapes and “happy little trees,” Bob Ross is a beloved figure. While Bob hailed from Florida, his iconic show, The Joy of Painting, was filmed in Muncie at WIPB-TV, a local PBS affiliate, from 1983 to 1994. The soft-spoken artist’s program reached millions of viewers and continues to inspire countless artists over three decades later. Muncie is proud of its connection to Bob, with local landmarks, events, and workshops celebrating his legacy.

David Letterman Stay Up Late
Indiana-native David Letterman has a longstanding affinity for Muncie, starting with his days on campus at Ball State and later mentioning it in jokes and sketches on NBC’s Late Night and CBS’ The Late Show. He frequently portrayed the city as quintessential small-town America, even humorously suggesting the city should host the Olympics. He stays in touch with his alma mater, often bringing famous friends to campus or working on unique projects with students.
Head to Ball State to see Dave’s old stomping grounds
A testament to its status as “America’s Hometown,” Muncie has made its way into various films and TV shows over the years. Grab some Indiana-grown popcorn and a Ball jar of your favorite beverage and settle in for a Midwestern movie marathon.
Parks and Recreation
(NBC, 2009–2015)
The Indiana-set comedy starring Amy Poehler as the always idealistic Leslie Knope references Muncie as one of the real-life Indiana locations used to ground the fictional town of Pawnee. The map of Pawnee in the show is an upside-down version of the map of Muncie, complete with the famous horseshoe bend of the White River. Just ask Jerry Gergich, he knows better than anyone that Muncie is a lovely city.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic opens in Muncie, the hometown of characters Jillian Guiler and Roy Neary (played by Melinda Dillon and Richard Dreyfuss). The small-town setting is a fitting backdrop for the film’s theme of ordinary people experiencing extraordinary events. Come see the real Cornbread Road where you might experience your own otherworldly encounter.
Stranger Things
(Netflix, 2016–present)
The hit show, set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, includes references to real Indiana locations, and Muncie is among them. Given its ties to small-town Americana, Muncie fits seamlessly into the series’ aesthetic. Dustin even has a vintage Camp Crosley poster, Muncie YMCA’s popular summer campground, hanging in his room.
Hoosiers (1986)
The inspiring tale of the underdog Hickory Huskers beating the odds to take home the state championship trophy to their adoring small town is based on a true Hoosier Hysteria story. The big, bad—yet fictional—South Bend Central team in the film was actually the Muncie Central Bearcats in real life. Our hometown heroes were cut short of their fourth state championship title by the tiny Milan Indians—proving that in 49 other states, it’s just basketball... but this is Indiana.
The Middle
(ABC, 2009–2018)
The fictional town of Orson, Indiana, is inspired by small Indiana towns like Muncie, and Muncie itself is referenced at times. Co-created by a Munsonian, the semi-dysfunctional Heck family understands a thing or two about Hoosier hospitality and growing up in the Crossroads of America.

90 YEARS OF THEATRE BY & FOR THE
Pull back the curtain at Muncie Civic Theatre
and you’ll find a group of performers and volunteers no less magical than the stories on stage. Fueled by a love of the arts, Muncie Civic has served as a central hub for the community through the magic of theatre.
Muncie Civic hosts several community programs, puts on Broadway-level productions, and is the embodiment of Muncie’s downtown history.
The Muncie Civic Theatre was founded in 1931 as a way to uplift and inspire Muncie residents and visitors. It is a “theatre by the community for the community” that carries the torch for performance, education, and outreach.
Volunteers at Civic have expanded their community outreach with programs to support mental health, creativity, and youth by placing the magic of theatre at the fingertips of the community. Efforts like Barrier-Free Theatre, Page to Stage, and youth education programs are designed to teach, entertain, and provide a safe, creative space for participants.
community
For the ultimate theatre lovers, Civic is where you can immerse yourself in the arts both behind the scenes and on stage. Volunteers play roles in shows, assist with costume, prop, and set design, work backstage, manage concessions, and usher crowds. Together, cast and crew team up to bring top-quality shows to eager audiences.
Delight in a wide selection of new productions each year. Embrace the season with shows like Miracle on 34th Street or buy tickets for Broadway adaptations like Hairspray or Frozen here in Muncie.
Beyond the stage, get involved in a workshop to learn the ins and outs of the theatre industry. Sharpen specific skills, like carpentry and comedy, or gain an overview of the art of live performance from experienced professionals.
When you take a seat at the Mainstage, you're surrounded by the richness of Muncie art and culture. No matter your background or experience, enjoy the culmination of nearly 100 years of passion and love for storytelling when you visit Muncie Civic Theatre.

Public Art
Coloring Outside the Lines
Wander through Delaware County and you’ll find the walls talking. Artists from across the region have turned everyday spaces into beautiful murals, sharing stories of the community and giving local businesses a splash of color.
More Love by Chris Silva highlights Muncie's tenacity and determination as a community that never fails to support each other. On the Mark, For the City by the We’re Trying Collective celebrates diversity and inclusion right in the city center. With an appreciation for classic graffiti, Leonski Crosby creates beauty where only blank buildings once existed in public parks. Each of the county’s dozens of public artworks serves a purpose.
Around every corner is a new work waiting to be discovered. Better than a billboard, murals are stretched alongside businesses like Hunnicutt’s Dairy Bar, the 413, The Barking Cow in Gaston, and Rosebud Coffee House.
The city continues to spark creativity in its citizens through a collective art project. Since 2018, Delaware County residents have accepted the challenge to paint the city of Muncie’s traffic signal control boxes, inspiring local artists to make each street corner uniquely Muncie.
It’s a city that comes alive when paint and public spaces meet. Color and design don’t just beautify the ordinary, but tell the stories hidden in plain sight all around us.

Breaded Pork Tenderloins
No Bun Can Contain This Flavor
Forget basketball or the Indy 500, there’s nothing more truly Hoosier than a delicious, big-as-your-head breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. In Delaware County, each restaurant puts its own spin on the classic. Some say the secret is in the breading, like at Savage’s Ale House, where you can try it hand-breaded or beer-battered to crispy perfection. Others swear by the thickness, with Amazing Joe’s serving up an award-wining hearty center-cut tenderloin sandwich.
Twin Archer Brewpub goes big with the special “Hoosier Daddy” jumbo sandwich, while Cammack Station adds a fiery option with spicy breading. 1925 PubHouse takes traditional pub fare to the next level and Four Day Ray Brewing in Yorktown serves up the “Indiana Tenderloin,” a brew’s best friend. And for true tenderloin enthusiasts, Mulligan’s Clubhouse Grill is tried and true, having earned a spot on the Indiana Foodways Tenderloin Lovers Trail.

traveled TAKE THE TRAIL LESS
If fresh air and wide-open spaces sound like your kind of adventure, Delaware County is the perfect destination for you to explore. Whether you prefer two wheels, sturdy hiking boots, or a paddle in hand, there’s plenty to do.
Start your journey on the Cardinal Greenway, Indiana’s longest rail-trail. Stretching 62 miles from Marion to Richmond, this paved path is perfect for biking, walking, running, inline skating, and even cross-country skiing during snowy times. As part of both the American Discovery Trail and the Great American Rail-Trail, it is a bucket-list route for serious adventurers. With over 20 trailheads, you can hop on for a quick stroll or spend the day exploring charming towns and historic sites along the way. The trail also connects to the White River Greenway, a 5.6-mile paved path following the river’s edge, offering stunning water views and easy access to parks, picnic areas, wildlife-watching spots, and Ball State University.
For those who love being on the water, the White River is calling. Kayak or canoe through scenic stretches of the river, with convenient launches at Kitselman Trailhead, Barlow Landing, and Morrow’s Meadow. Cast a line for bass or catfish, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Each summer, paddlers race down the river during the White River Canoe Races, a fun way to experience this natural treasure.
Muncie MOMENT
Cardinal Greenway was inducted into the National Rails to Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame in 2018, securing more than 50% of the vote!
Thanks to recent conservation efforts, the White River is thriving—home to over 65 species of fish and an abundance of wildlife.
With so many ways to explore, Delaware County is an outdoor lover’s dream. Come for an all-weekend outing or a quick day escape; the trails and waterways make it easy to get outside and do something memorable.

SHOPPING Inland Interiors
purpo e STYLE WITH
For Kristen Suding, interior design is less about looking “pretty” and more about creating spaces that truly work for the people who live and work in them.
A Muncie native, Kristen’s journey into design was shaped by her early interest in psychology. While studying at Ball State University, she realized that the way people interact with their environments was just as fascinating to her as the human mind. This passion led her to shift gears and pursue interior design.
After working in commercial design in Indianapolis, Kristen returned to Muncie to raise her family, launching what would become Inland Interiors. What started with just one client has now grown into a full-service interior design firm handling residential and commercial projects across the country. Whether a homeowner needs an in-home office refresh, or a business requires a full-scale transformation, Inland helps clients see new possibilities for their spaces, big or small.
In 2019, Kristen and her team opened Inland Interiors’ storefront, a space that houses both the design studio and retail area, now located in the heart of downtown Muncie on Walnut Street.
The store is an extension of their design expertise, offering a carefully curated selection of home goods, stylish clothing, unique gifts, and lush greenery. The front of the space invites visitors to shop and be inspired, while the back functions as a working design studio filled with samples of flooring, tile, rugs, and more.
Like many small businesses, Inland reached a point where they needed to adapt to keep growing. They began using social media to showcase products, host Facebook Live sales, and expand their e-design services to work with clients virtually. What began as a way to navigate uncertain times has become a valuable part of their business model, now allowing them to serve clients across the country.
For those looking to redesign their space, Kristen offers simple yet impactful advice: start with intention. “Design doesn’t have to be intimidating,” she says. “Focus on what works for you, and less is usually more.”
Shop for the perfect pieces of décor for your home or reimagine your entire space or business with Inland Interiors. Experience thoughtful design that makes all the difference.
