St. Bronagh’s Bell This ancient bell, whose ringing had been heard for centuries, was discovered hidden in an old oak tree. Now hosted in St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, it will grant any prayer if rung three times.

Kilbroney Graveyard Near the site of St Bronagh’s 6th century convent are the ruins of a medieval church, an ancient cross marking her burial place, a holy well offering cures for throats and eyes and the grave of the world’s tallest man, Giant Murphy.

Barrack Green United Irishman Tom Dunn was flogged to death here for refusing to reveal his comrades’ names. A festival is held in the village each year to honour him.

The Square Little changed in centuries, it was here General Patton addressed US troops in the Second World War. Each July it is the hub of the Fiddler’s Green Festival.

Ross Monument The 100ft obelisk towering over the entrance to the village honours local man General Ross of Bladensburg, whose troops burned down the White House and whose actions inspired the American national anthem.

Crag Graveyard The ruins here are those of St Pauls, the village church which was dedicated in 1732 and which preceded the current parish church. Elizabeth, widow of General Ross, is buried here.
