PRICE: FREE

VENUE: DOWN ARTS CENTRE

A quiet room. A body on the table. A voice that shouldn’t still be speaking.

When Jennifer, a mortuary make-up artist, begins preparing the body of a young man who has taken his own life, she doesn’t expect him to sit up and speak. But John’s not quite ready to go…not yet. Trapped in the space between life and death, these two strangers begin a final, unexpected conversation.

As memories surface and regrets unfold, Forever & Ever gently explores what we leave behind, what we never say, and what it means to let go.

This intimate new play explores grief, regret and the question that lingers for so many families left behind by suicide… Why?

Written By: Jonathan Burgess :: Running Time: 60-70 minutes

Forever & Ever is a co-production between Blue Eagle Productions and New Gate Arts & Cultural Centre.

VENUE: DOWN ARTS CENTRE PRESENTED BY: MOVING ON MUSIC

Moving On Music is delighted to present exciting new traditional powerhouse ‘Tempest’ on tour this Autumn.

Formed in 2023, Tempest are already regarded as a vibrant exponent of traditional Irish music and song. Their debut album was released in early 2025.

Seasoned musicians in their own right, they have collectively toured across Europe, the US and the UK collaborating with a wide range of artists such as Bríd Harper, John Carty, Jean Michel Vellion, Réalta and Music in the Glen.

The group is firmly rooted in the heritage, song and music of their native Ulster and take great pride in sharing this with their audience. There is a particular focus on the singing tradition of Bláithín’s native South Armagh while many of the tunes also take their origins from the northern province.

Supporting Tempest on tour will be Múlú (Miadhachlughain O’Donnell), a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Castlewellan, Co. Down. A fluent Irish speaker with a passion for curating and performing songs in her native tongue, she is dedicated to upholding the sean-nós tradition while fusing her own signature sound with Irish folk music. Alongside Múlú’s solo project, she is part of tradtronica group HUARTAN (NI Music Prize Live Act of the Year 2024), 11 piece all-female band BIIRD and Afro Celt Sound System. THAT KNAVE, RALEIGH

DATE: FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER 2025

TIME: 8PM (BAR AVAILABLE FROM 7PM)

PRICE: £18 / £16

VENUE: DOWN ARTS CENTRE

PRESENTED BY: DYAD PRODUCTIONS

Following their five-star show, I, Elizabeth, the award-winning Dyad Productions (A Christmas Carol, Lady Susan, A Room of One’s Own, Christmas Gothic, Austen’s Women, Female Gothic) return to the Elizabethan era. To the famous and fabulous Elizabethan explorer, sailor, dandy, and warrior, Sir Walter Raleigh. Elizabeth I’s favourite and James I’s knave.

This is a journey through the astonishing highs and lows of one of Britain’s most famous men from history. But there’s so much you don’t know...

In a life spanning around 65 years, Sir Walter Raleigh achieved more than others might do in a hundred lifetimes. Over a decade in the tower and still he held power. The Huguenots, America, The Armada and execution. Is that the whole story? The final chapter of Raleigh’s life is perhaps the most daring, strange and utterly heart-breaking.

See the fall from grace taken directly from historical record, marvel at the magnetism of a man who seized every opportunity to create a legacy which spans the centuries and at every wrenching, exalting and personal moment, you will be witnesses.

Written and performed by Andrew Margerison (A Christmas Carol, Frantic Assembly’s Fatherland, Macbeth), and directed by Rebecca Vaughan (A Christmas Carol).

THROUGH THE LENS 2 – AN EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY DARYL YOUNG

DATE: THURSDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2025 –FRIDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2025

TIME: DURING OPENING HOURS

PRICE: FREE

Daryl Young is an enthusiast landscape photographer who lived in Downpatrick until aged eighteen, and who was educated at Down High School. Daryl’s love of photography started at the age of twelve, when he was bought his first camera as a Christmas present. Long family walks and frequent visits to the coast molded Daryl’s love of the great outdoors. These two passions come together in Daryl’s love of landscape photography.

Through his photography, Daryl showcases the beauty of the Co Down landscape and seascape. As well as more traditional images, Daryl specializes in producing stunning panorama photographs which he prints in two, three or four separate panels. Printed large, installations can be as wide as two and a half metres by forty centimetres deep, and they make a striking centrepiece to any living space or workplace. Daryl also takes long exposure photographs (of up to three or four minutes), which produce very tranquil fine art images. All of these styles of photography are included in this exhibition, Daryl’s second in the Down Arts Centre. Daryl’s subjects range from favourite locations such as the Mourne Mountains, the Ards Peninsula and the Lecale coastline, to less familiar rural and coastal scenes, and his photography is distinctive in its use of beautiful light and strong composition.

Charity Art Exhibition in memory of Clare Afshar and her Wild Cactus Creations

During Covid, while Clare’s hair salon (Vintage Rocks) was closed, Clare focused her creative energy into producing super bright and colourful art pieces instead of bright and colourful hair. She went on to gift and sell her beautiful wildflower meadows to many of her family and friends. Following Clare’s untimely passing in October 2024, Clare’s family decided to gather up as many of these treasured pieces and display them as a tribute to what a creative and magical person she was.

The exhibition will run Thursday 13 November to Saturday 29 November 2025. In addition to this they will be selling limited edition prints to raise much needed funds for Saintfield Lodge Nursing Home, where Clare’s dear mum Una spent the later years of her life.

After Una sadly passed away in March 2024, Clare was determined to raise funds for the residents. Now, through this exhibition, Clare’s family and friends hope to fulfil her heartfelt intention — by offering limited edition prints of her artwork. On Saturday 29 November, Clare’s family will be selling limited edition prints and stationary in Down Arts Centre, as well as having a donation bucket. These limited edition prints will also be available to purchase in the Down Art Centre shop while the exhibition runs.

The family would like to welcome you all to Clare’s beautiful exhibition this November in Down Arts Centre.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF DOWN ARTS CENTRE GALLERY

Please note that the Gallery at Down Arts Centre will be temporarily closed for renovations from November 2024 to March 2025. These essential works will allow us to enhance the space and improve the visitor experience for future exhibitions. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back to a refreshed and revitalised gallery in Spring 2025. In the meantime, please continue to enjoy our full programme of events and workshops throughout the Centre.

Down Arts Collective is a welcoming monthly gathering for artists of all disciplines who live, work, or create within Newry, Mourne and Down.

Inspired by the nurturing, reflective spirit of spaces like the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, this hub is a place to pause, meet kindred creatives, and nourish the long game of artmaking — not alone, but together. Whether you’re a painter, performer, writer, filmmaker, musician, community artist, or simply a curious creative soul, Down Arts Collective offers an open door and a warm cup of coffee.

In a landscape where artists often work in isolation or compete for limited resources, this hub provides an antidote: a regular, gently held space for peer connection, creative visibility, and mutual support.

OUR GOALS ARE SIMPLE BUT VITAL:

• To connect local artists and creative practitioners across disciplines

• To support artistic practice through dialogue, shared knowledge, and funding insights

• To nurture the arts ecology of the region through collective momentum

• To cultivate a sense of belonging and purpose for artists in our rural and urban communities

DRAMABILITY

Dramability Weekly Rehearsals

Dramability members meet every week to develop theatre skills, explore creativity, and work together towards exciting performances.

Each rehearsal blends skill-building activities – from acting techniques to movement and voice work – with dedicated time to rehearse for our current production. Right now, we’re bringing festive magic to life as we prepare for our Christmas show!

As an inclusive theatre group, Dramability is about more than just theatre. Our members gain friendship, confidence, and social skills, all in a supportive space where everyone is welcomed and valued. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or completely new to the stage, you’ll find a place here to grow, connect, and be part of something special.

Dramability is currently full but you can get in touch via their social media pages to join their waiting list.

Dramability – Seeking New Volunteers

Dramability is looking for friendly, enthusiastic people to join our team and help with our inclusive drama sessions. We’re particularly keen to hear from those who are available mid-week and could also lend a hand in opening Stages Café to local community groups. Your tasks could include simple but important things like pressing play on an iPad, serving biscuits, or making a cup of tea.

No drama skills or training are required – just a willingness to get involved and support others.

In return, you’ll gain friendship, connections, and plenty of fun while making a real difference in our community.

DOWN ARTS CENTRE CRAFT SHOP
