Singer-songwriter and recording artist Gráinne Loucia Duffy, born in 1983 in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, discovered her voice at an early age, joining school and church choirs at nine. After being denied entry to her school’s music programme as a teenager, she taught herself guitar, inspired by her sisters’ record collections and a love of blues.
She went on to study classical music and voice at the Irish Conservatory of Music in Dublin, later completing studies in classical and jazz at Maynooth University, and a PhD in Blues at Dublin City University.
Gráinne’s career began with the independent release of her debut album Out of the Dark (2007), written after receiving studio time as a gift. She has since released four further albums: Test of Time (2011), Where I Belong (2017), Voodoo Blues (2020) and Dirt Woman Blues (2023).
A contemporary blues artist with diverse influences, she has toured extensively across Ireland, the UK, Europe and internationally, performing at major festivals including Glastonbury and Mahindra Blues Fest. Her upcoming album What Am I Supposed to Do?, recorded in Los Angeles, was released in Autumn 2025.

‘MAD AS BIRDS’
BY JOANNA CANTILLON

TIME: DURING OPENING HOURS

VENUE: DOWN ARTS CENTRE
Joanna Cantillon is a contemporary artist based in Newcastle Co Down. She has a BA(Hons) Degree in fine art specialising in oil painting. Joanna has exhibited her work extensively. She has had solo shows in the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast and previously in Down Arts Centre and has had work selected for group shows in the RUA, Crawford Open, Flowerfield Arts Centre and Mostar Festival Bosnia.
This Exhibition follows the success of her recent solo show in Newcastle Library entitled ‘First Came the Animals’.
“For me painting is as much about the process. I start with washes of oil paint and turpentine, as I go along the medium becomes pure oil, as little as I can possibly help. It’s a basic process but it takes time so cannot be wasted. This process is a journey, an unfolding event, a time to explore the interplay between colour and narrative, a time to get the story straight. This process is not perfect but it is my individual experience. It is my existence.”

This annual showcase celebrates the art collection at Down County Museum. With a focus on the relationship between architecture and art, this year’s exhibition explores the influence of Down’s built heritage on artists across the centuries.
Csilla Toldy is a writer and film poet living in Rostrevor, Co. Down. Her visual work is text-based, and often multilingual, exploring themes of identity, nature, and our connections with the environment. Csilla’s film poems were commissioned by the Executive Office of Northern Ireland and the Centre for Creative Practices. Many of them won awards at international film festivals.
Works were exhibited in Poole Arts Centre, Leno Gallery Berlin, D-Light Gallery, The Complex in Dublin, Armagh Planetarium and the Foyer Gallery of Marketplace Theatre.
The still images in this exhibition were created in collaboration with photographer Jonathan Heyhoe as part of their joint work “Reflections”, discussing identity and our place in the world.
Along with earlier works, this exhibition will unveil “Imbolc” a video installation Csilla created as Artist in Residence at Down Arts Centre in collaboration with the choir of Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche and The Garvey School of Speech and Drama, Caitriona Lane (voice over and translation), Lucky McIntire (dance and voice).

Down Arts Collective is a welcoming monthly gathering for artists of all disciplines who live, work, or create within Newry, Mourne and Down.
Inspired by the nurturing, reflective spirit of spaces like the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, this hub is a place to pause, meet kindred creatives, and nourish the long game of artmaking — not alone, but together.
Whether you’re a painter, performer, writer, filmmaker, musician, community artist, or simply a curious creative soul, Down Arts Collective offers an open door and a warm cup of coffee. In a landscape where artists often work in isolation or compete for limited resources, this hub provides an antidote: a regular, gently held space for peer connection, creative visibility, and mutual support.
OUR GOALS ARE SIMPLE BUT VITAL:
• To connect local artists and creative practitioners across disciplines
• To support artistic practice through dialogue, shared knowledge, and funding insights
• To nurture the arts ecology of the region through collective momentum
• To cultivate a sense of belonging and purpose for artists in our rural and urban communities
DRAMABILITY
35 YEARS OF INCLUSIVE THEATRE
Celebrating 35 years at Down Arts Centre, Dramability is a vibrant and inclusive theatre group where creativity and community go hand in hand. With around 50% of members living with a disability, everyone takes part on an equal basis, and each person’s unique talents help shape the work created. What makes Dramability truly distinctive is that every production is written from scratch. Following auditions, roles are carefully developed to suit each member, ensuring opportunities for those who wish to act, sing, dance, or take on smaller or non-speaking parts. There is always a place for everyone on stage.
The group presents two major productions each year—a summer show and a much-loved Christmas pantomime—both of which are consistently sold out and warmly received by audiences who travel from far and wide. Standing ovations are a regular and well-earned tribute to the commitment and talent of the cast.
Meeting every Saturday morning, Dramability is more than a rehearsal space; it is a close-knit “Dramability family.” It offers a welcoming, supportive environment where friendships flourish and members can express themselves freely through drama, dance, and song. Social moments are just as important, with celebrations for birthdays, seasonal events, and end-of-term gatherings, as well as opportunities to come together and enjoy recordings of performances.
Members also benefit from an annual summer scheme, where they develop skills and begin work on the Christmas production. While most sessions are led in-house, the group also welcomes visiting professionals for workshops in areas such as musical theatre, singing, and clowning.
Over the years, Dramability has created unforgettable experiences, including theatre trips, residentials, and ambitious creative projects such as silent films shot in locations ranging from the Folk Park and Down County Museum to New York. The group also runs Stages Café, a musical-themed pop-up experience at Down Arts Centre, where singing waiters serve treats alongside live performances. Now oversubscribed and hugely valued by its members, Dramability continues to be a place where people feel they belong—an inspiring example of inclusive theatre at its very best.
