MORETON BAY MARINE PARK
DID YOU KNOW NATIONAL PARKS CAN ALSO BE ON THE WATER TOO?
Situated along the coastal shoreline of South East Queensland, Moreton Bay Marine Park (the region’s namesake) is one of the largest estuarine bays in Australia covering 3,400 square kilometres. Bribie Island, Moreton Island, North and South Stradbroke Island are part of the Marine Park, along with a few smaller bay islands such as Coochi and Peel Island.
It is home to a diversity of marine life and also abundant in coral growth and is a popular destination for keen anglers and watersports enthusiasts.

MARINE LIFE, ANIMAL AND
WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS
From exhilarating whale watching cruises to guided nature walks in pristine reserves, each experience offers an up-close encounter with the incredible wildlife that call Moreton Bay region home.
From turtles and dolphins to dugongs, whales and platypus in the water, as well as osprey birds, koalas and kangaroos on the beach, Moreton Bay is your escape from the city for a day of wildlife spotting basking in the sun and sea spray.
FUN FACT:
Captain Kerry Lopez from Brisbane Whale Watching can identify some of the regular humpback whales by sight because of their unique markings including Billy, Stiches and Migaloo Junior.
THE DUGONG
Dugongs are an important part of Moreton Bay's marine life. They are the world’s only fully vegetarian marine mammal and the only sea cow in Australian waters. Fish-like in shape with flippers and a tail, dugongs can grow up to three metres in length and weigh up to 400kgs. Unlike other mammals, dugongs cannot hold their breath under water for very long, which is why their nostrils are located near the front of their head, so they can breathe with most of their body beneath the surface. The greatest threat to dugongs is the loss of their habitat.
SCAN HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DUGONGS IN THE MORETON BAY MARINE PARK ECOSYSTEM
You can also visit Osprey House in Griffin. Or jump onboard a cruise with Dolphin Wild Island Cruises who have a 95% success rate of spotting dugongs in the wild.
THE HUMPBACK WHALES
When the winter chill starts to merge on the southern hemisphere, more than 25,000 humpback whales make their way up the eastern coast of Australia from Antarctica in search for warmer waters to give birth to their offspring. Known as the gentle giants of the sea, humpback whales are also very intelligent and the most active whales as they put on acrobatic shows with their jumps, flips and waves. And did you know that humpback whales only follow one migration path their entire lives? Due to this migration happening annually, it’s become an exciting tradition and tourist attraction for South East Queensland, with Moreton Bay known to be one of the best whale watching destinations in the country.
Nature and animal lovers have an amazing opportunity to witness these majestic giants up close on a whale watching tour right from Redcliffe Jetty with Brisbane Whale Watching from June to November (and they offer a 100% sightings guarantee!).

THE TURTLES
Moreton Bay Marine Park is one of the few places in the world where large populations of turtles are found so close to a capital city. Six of the world’s seven species of marine turtle have been recorded in Moreton Bay, including loggerhead, green, hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley and flatback turtles. In fact, Moreton Bay has the privilege to have a small number of loggerhead turtles nesting each year on Bribie Island and sporadically on Redcliffe’s sandy beaches throughout the warmer summer months.
Did you know?
Moreton Bay is the only place in Australia where dugongs gather into herds because the threatened species are protected in our calm waters.

Dolphin Wild Island Cruises offer all-inclusive, personalized ecoadventures on Moreton Island. Tours include snorkelling, beach relaxation, and wildlife spotting. Departing Newport Marina.
