DUGONGS
Dugongs are a vital part of Moreton Bay’s marine ecosystem and are the only sea cows found in Australian waters. With a fish-like shape, flippers and a tail, they can grow up to three metres long and weigh around 400 kilograms. Since dugongs cannot hold their breath for long, their nostrils are positioned near the front of their heads, allowing them to breathe easily while mostly submerged. Habitat loss is their greatest threat. Spot dugongs in the wild with a Dolphin Wild Island Cruise, which boasts a 95% success rate, or visit Osprey House in Griffin to learn more.
HUMPBACK WHALES
Each winter, over 40,000 humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to Australia’s warmer waters to give birth. These gentle giants are highly intelligent and known for their acrobatic displays of breaching, rolling and tail and fin slapping. Interestingly, humpbacks follow the same migration path for life. Moreton Bay is one of Australia’s premier whalewatching spots, offering unforgettable encounters. Join a Brisbane Whale Watching tour from Redcliffe Jetty between June and October, with a 100% sighting guarantee.
TURTLES
Moreton Bay Marine Park is one of the few places worldwide where large turtle populations thrive close to a capital city. Six of the world’s seven marine turtle species can be found here, including loggerhead, green, hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley and flatback turtles. Loggerhead turtles even nest annually on Bribie Island and occasionally on Redcliffe’s beaches during the warmer summer months.
