2022 McCall Winter Carnival Grand Marshals Olympians Lyle Nelson and Patty Hovdey (Boydstun) As we celebrate “A Return to Our Roots” this Winter Carnival, Lyle and Patty are the perfect representatives for all that our theme encompasses. Multi-generational McCall natives, they epitomize the passion and magic of winter sports and shine as beacons of humility and grace in our community. Both give their time and talents selflessly, both personally and professionally.

Not only did they “go for gold” in their respective Olympic careers, but they also have pure hearts of gold. We are thrilled to honor these two winter Olympians as our 2022 Grand Marshals!

Lyle Nelson Lyle Nelson grew up in McCall and was coached by local Olympians Mac Miller and Cory Engen as a youth. After four years attending West Point Military Academy, Lyle competed as a biathlete, a sport that combines cross-county skiing and rifle shooting, in four Olympics (1976-1988). At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Lyle was elected by his fellow Olympians to have the distinguished honor of carrying the U.S. flag into opening ceremonies. He returned to McCall in 2005 working as a community health professional for St. Luke’s Health System.

He spreads positivity and smiles wherever he goes. Lyle lives with his wife Marcia and two children, Nelson and Lilianne.

Patty Hovdey (Boydstun) Like Lyle, Patty grew up in McCall skiing the slopes of Little Ski Hill and Brundage Mountain.

At age 15, she was recruited for the U.S. Hopeful Squad and within two years was elevated to the A-Squad. In 1970, Patty won the women’s national slalom title. She competed at the Sapporo Olympics in 1972 on the Alpine team in slalom and represented the U.S. well as the 2nd highest U.S. finisher. After the Olympics, she coached at Stratton Ski Academy in Vermont and raced professionally. Upon returning to her hometown, Patty coached Mighty Mites and junior racers while starting Home Town Sports with her husband Dean. This ski and sport shop has now been a cornerstone in McCall for 43 years strong. Now, Patty and Dean proudly run the business with their son Eric, daughter-in-law Jessica, and two-yearold granddaughter Ella Bea.
