Tracking down surprisingly deep powder stashes is not difficult at the McCall area’s two major ski resorts, Tamarack and Brundage Mountain. Both are renowned for short (or non-existent) lift lines and an impressive lack of crowds. But those looking for an even more uncommon powder experience will want to answer the call of the backcountry around McCall and the West Central Mountains...

Easiest Access

TAMARACK RESORT

The easiest way to get into the backcountry is to venture beyond the boundaries of the ski resorts. Both Tamarack and Brundage have enticing terrain beyond the ropes, and unlike some areas, it is ‘legal’ to cross boundaries to search out these less-traveled powder lines. Keep in mind, these areas are not likely to be controlled or patrolled, so you’ll want to check in with the ski patrol at the top of each mountain before you head out and follow the basic backcountry safety rules of having a beacon, shovel, probe and at least one buddy on board. We’re calling this ‘easiest access’ because once you find the untracked lines, you can use the high-speed quads to make laps all day long.

Insider’s Tip: Locals and resort employees have been known to spill the details of some extra sweet stashes in exchange for a pitcher of beer après ski. The better the beer, the better the chance they’ll show you the goods.

What to Know Before You Go Gear: Beacons, probes and shovels are essential when heading into the backcountry.

Knowledge: Avalanche Education courses are highly recommended and can mean the difference between life and death if you are caught in an avalanche.

Conditions: A slope you hit last winter (or last week) could be treacherous tomorrow.

ALWAYS check the avalanche forecast before any backcountry excursion.

BRUNDAGE SNOWCAT ADVENTURES

Brundage Mountain Snowcat Adventures offers guided backcountry snowcat trips on an expansive 18,000 acres of Payette National Forest backcountry. The area includes three different mountain peaks and a variety of chutes, open bowls and tree lines. We’re scoring this one as ‘intermediate’ only because you need to make a reservation. With heated snowcats and guides dropping you at the top of pristine snowfields, both skiers and snowboarders can devote their energy to gravityfueled powder turns and the widest smiles you’ve ever seen.

PAYETTE POWDER GUIDES LICK CREEK YURT

Experts Only Couch potatoes need not apply for an adventure with Payette Powder Guides, but the experienced winter athlete will be hard-pressed to find a more memorable experience.

The crew at PPG will transport your gear and your group to a backcountry basecamp via snowmobile or snowcat. From there, backcountry skiers have 30,000 acres for human-powered exploration with guides available to help guests find the best lines on some of the highest peaks in the area. The Lick Creek range averages a 10-12 foot snowpack, but the comfort level at the PPG outpost is surprisingly high.

The two yurts feature a wood-fired sauna, so you can relax those muscles and stretch your trip out for several days or a week.

: PIZZA ON THE GRILL

Evening Rise Bread Company is a small bakery that packs a big punch. Along with serving up towering sandwiches and fresh-baked bread and rolls daily, they also offer fresh pizza dough – perfect for a homemade meal that tastes like take out! Be sure to call a day in advance and order your pizza dough. One pound of dough is perfect for one large pizza.

DIRECTIONS: Heat your BBQ on high. Ideally, you want the temperature to be at least 500 degrees.

Assemble the Pizza: Roll out pizza dough to desired thickness on a well-floured surface. Once the dough is flat, slide onto your pizza stone. Brush the surface of the dough with olive oil then assemble your pizza with your favorite sauce, toppings and cheese.

Place the assembled pizza on the pizza stone on the BBQ and cook for 8 – 12 minutes depending on thickness of crust (thin crust needs less time, thick crust needs a few extra minutes).

SOUTHSIDE ANEJO SPICY MARGARITA

Southside Grill has whipped up a delicious spin on a traditional margarita that is sure to warm you from the inside out.

Rub rim of glass with lime, dip in coarse salt Mix in shaker with ice: 1 ½ oz. Patron Anejo Tequila ½ shot Cointreau Juice from one lime ½ oz. Simple Syrup 1 oz. bar sour 1 tsp. of spice mix of your tasting (mix of cayenne, California chili, chili powder) If you want it extra spicy, add Tapatio or Tabasco Shake for 30 seconds, and pour into prepared salted glass

McCall has a fabulous selection of shops, boutiques and art galleries to keep your arms full of purchases.

Start by finding a hidden gem at a consignment or thrift store. Dandy Lion Consignment carries gently used women’s and children’s clothing while the MCPAWS Thrift Store and St. Luke’s McCall Auxiliary Thrift Store have a little bit of everything.

If you are after something that sparkles, McCall Jewelry Company is a muststop. They carry unique pieces from both national and local artisans and you can also customize your own design. Next on our list is Bella Kitchen, where you can find everything the gourmet cook could ever need. Head upstairs to Second Story Consignment and forage through the small furniture, home décor pieces and home accessories. From here, walk 1 block east to Razzle Dazzle which offers fun shopping “within splashing distance of Payette Lake.” Candles, cards, home décor, local art work, vintage signs, and unique gifts abound in this quaint shop.

End the day by getting your art fix at one of our outstanding galleries. Artizen carries an unusual collection of clothing, jewelry, garden items, paintings, art work and beautiful furniture. THE COVE AT SHORE LODGE

Treat yourself to an indulgent day of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Start with a spa treatment at Spa del Sol or Unwind Body Spa! Enjoy a relaxing massage, facial, or pedicure to erase stress and calm the spirit. The Cove also offers a unique indoor-outdoor saltwater immersion pool experience where the only requirement is “lounging and lollygagging.” If the entire family insists on tagging along on your spa day, take the troops on an adventure to one of the restorative hot springs in the area.

Gold Fork Hot Springs located a short drive from Tamarack in Donnelly and has a series of pools in a range of temperatures for all comfort levels and is designed for serious lounging. Looking for a more remote location? We can’t get enough of Burgdorf Hot Springs. Accessible only by snowmobile in the winter (open to car traffic when the snow melts), this scenic pool is naturally maintained with a gravel bottom and fed by natural geothermal water with a temp of 100–113 degrees. You can even turn your soak into an overnight stay at one of the rustic cabins on site.

Hit the pubs on a tour of McCall’s finest breweries.

Sip an “Initial Attack IPA” or “Sturgeon Tale Ale” at Broken Horn Brewing C o m p a n y , sample Salmon River Brewery’s flagship “Buzz Buzz Porter” and the “ESB: Extra Special Brundage” brew or pick up a growler of McCall Brewing Company’s “Wobbily Man Smoked Scotch Ale” or “Lemon Ginger Hefeweizen.” In the mood for wine? Head to The Narrows at Shore Lodge and enjoy an extensive, well-balanced wine list. The Cork Wine Bar in Steamer’s Steak and Seafood restaurant is known for its fabulous ambiance and friendly staff who are happy to recommend the perfect pairing with dinner or a bottle to enjoy on its own.

With wine on the mind, a stop at Rupert’s at Hotel McCall to enjoy a vintage from right here in Idaho is a must. And while you are at it, head across the courtyard to Bistro 45, the neighborhood gathering place for wine-lovers. A McCall staple, pull up a vintage ski lift chair at The Mill and sip a hot toddy in front of their huge open-air fireplace. Before calling it a night, grab a cocktail and an appetizer at The Anchor or head upstairs to The Yacht Club or across the street to Foresters Doghouse Saloon for a night of cocktails and dancing.

HOMESTEAD TERRAIN PARK at TAMARACK RESORT

If you are a diehard powder hound, a day on the mountain at Tamarack or Brundage is an easy choice.

Both resorts offer something for everyone – and great après ski hangouts! If sliding on rails and catching big air is on the agenda, check out Tamarack’s three terrain parks: No Business, Homestead and Discovery.

For a different twist, head to the new Deadwood Shred Park at Brundage, a unique terrain park constructed completely from natural elements like logs, standing and fallen trees. The Little Ski Hill also boasts an awesome terrain park that will keep shredders shredding and jibbers jibbing. Looking for something different?

The Activity Barn is just two miles south of McCall and now offers rail features, beginner lessons, and snow tubing via a brand new conveyor lift.

McCall’s backcountry offers the perfect package of incredible snow, thousands of acres of stunning terrain and amazing hospitality for snowmobiling adventures at any ability level.

It’s also the backyard playground where one of the world’s best professional backcountry snowmobilers found his life changed forever.

hris Burandt is considered one of the best backcountry pro snowmobilers in the world.

In 2007, the Buena Vista, Colorado native became the first ever X Games Gold Medalist in the Freestyle competition. In 2010, he earned the X Games Silver 2010 Knockout two-time Red Bull Fuel and Fury Winner title. He’s also a two-time Freestyle Sno-X (FSX) Rider of the Year. Now at the ripe ol’ age of 36, Burandt has been featured in numerous magazines and videos, including 509 Video Volume 10 filmed in March 2015 north of McCall – his old stomping grounds.

“College didn’t work out for me all that well,” explains Burandt.

“I was in my freshman year at the University of Idaho at Moscow, about four hours north of McCall and working part-time at the local Polaris dealership in Lewiston.”

Burandt became friends with John Heston, a longtime snowmobiler based in Lewiston and Meadows.

Heston and many of the McCall locals let a young Burandt tag along on his snowmobile and the rest became history.

“I was spending, let’s just say longer weekends snowmobiling in McCall instead of doing my classwork,” laughs Burandt.

The diverse terrain and tree spacing of McCall’s backcountry is where the X Games Champion honed his sledding skills.

“We went all over just kind of exploring all the local spots and being a younger kid then, was

following the guys and trying to learn as much as I could,” remembers Burandt.

One of the things he fell in love with was McCall’s perfect backcountry terrain. Snow and terrain are what snowmobilers live for. With an average of 325 inches of the beautiful, white, fluffy stuff in the upper elevations, McCall delivers on snow.

Areas such as Goose Lake, Wong’s Bowl and Twin Lakes north of McCall offer tree spacing and ideal pillow lines, also known as the area where the snow fills up, that challenged Burandt to push the boundaries and become the snowmobiling legend he is today.

However as extreme as his moves are, Burandt is quick to encourage anyone to make McCall the first choice for their first trip.

“This isn’t just the extreme snowmobile place. There are tons and tons of riding areas for the advanced to average to beginner riders. This is also the place where people just wanting to get their feet wet with a mountain ride for the first time can go,” says Burandt.

“McCall has good access for all levels of riders and the terrain makes it as technical as you want it to be.”

Access is Key The McCall area offers easy access to its backcountry.

Something that’s not always possible Burandt’s mentor, John Heston explains.

“You know a lot of times, to get to a great area to snowmobile in, you need a 4x4 and a GPS,” admits Heston. “I’ve always told

people that McCall’s a full service community. You can park in the Gordon C. Titus parking lot near Brundage and go just a couple of miles into the backcountry and be in spectacular, untouched terrain all day long.”

The area also boasts a bevy of hotels, motels and accommodation services for parties of two to 200. Add in its nearby area service stations, a parts store, snowmobile rentals with everything you could possibly need and area snowmobile specialty stores - it soon becomes clear why snowmobilers the world over keep coming back to McCall.

A person could literally show up in Bermuda shorts, a tank top and sandals and still be able to rent everything to go snowmobiling the next day.

“When you go it’s all about the full experience,” agrees Burandt.

“So when you talk about the town of McCall the community is really friendly to snowmobilers.

It’s always a tradition, you come off the mountain, you go to Lardos, or one of the other restaurants and stuff your face and the setting is beautiful everywhere you go.”

Burandt’s passion and love for backcountry riding enabled him to make a career out of snowmobiling.

“When I quit school and got a job and was riding, I still kept coming back to McCall when I could,” he continues. “Just a lot of memories and riding in McCall got me to where I am today. It really pushed my limits as a rider and made me want to do this as a living,” remarks Burandt. •

WHERE TO GO Good access to snowmobilers of all ability levels is available from the Gordon C. Titus and West Face parking lots, located north of McCall, or from the Francis Wallace parking lot on Warren Wagon Road.

For first time riders, beginners or family-friendly day trips, both Heston and Burandt suggest heading to Burgdorf Hot Springs or the historic small town of Warren, both easily accessible on groomed trails from the Francis Wallace parking lot a few miles north of McCall.

Another favorite for beginner riders is the groomed trail system on West Mountain accessible from West Mountain Road.

For the average to intermediate rider looking for less groomed action and more terrain, areas such as Wong’s Bowl, Twin Lakes, Grassy Twin, Duck Lake and Upper Hazard

Lake are all accessible from the Gordon C. Titus parking lot north of McCall. All are in the backcountry area between Brundage Mountain and Goose Lake, says Heston.

“It used to be we couldn’t get to Wong’s Bowl or Twin Lakes when the area received two to three feet of powder,” says Heston. “Now with the improved technology of the machine people can get there so its important to take emergency provisions and let people know where you’re planning to go and when you’re expected to be back or meet up.”

Advanced snowmobilers already know the sky’s the limit when it comes to McCall’s backcountry terrain.

“Really you don’t have to go far,” says Heston. “Anywhere in between all of these areas you can cut off and get into steep stuff and the trees. You can make any place off the main trails as technical as you want to go.”

Featured Trail: Goose Creek Falls

The Goose Creek Falls trail is one of the most popular hikes during the summer months, but it is also a great trail to take in the winter! Strap on your snowshoes and meander through snow-covered Douglas fir and down Goose Creek Canyon along a clear mountain stream.

To access the trailhead, drive west on Highway 55 from downtown McCall then turn right on the paved Brundage Mountain / Goose Lake Road. The Gordon Titus parking lot is about 3.5 miles from the Highway on the left, about a half mile before you get to Brundage Mountain Resort. The trailhead is located at the northern end of the parking lot.

Follow the trail about 100 yards before coming to an open area and heading over the western ridge. From there, you will descend through Goose Creek Canyon until you come to the Goose Creek Bridge. Turn south over the bridge and follow the creek downstream to the falls, a stunning 60 foot drop.

The hike is about 2 miles out and back and rated as a “moderate� hike due to the 650 foot elevation gain. This is a great option for families looking for a quick winter adventure. Dogs welcome!

1. How has the sport changed since you started?

The biggest change has been the equipment. When I was a kid, you couldn’t go off the trail unless the snow was set up because the older machines were built for riding trails. Today’s snowmobiles are highly capable, deep snow loving machines that allow even an average rider to access the backcountry.

A snowmobiler can literally carve a sled around as a skier or snowboarder carves yet you can go uphill, across the hill, and weave through trees and technical terrain with ease.

2. What makes McCall a great snowmobile destination?

McCall is one of my top favorite places to snowmobile and we have ridden in many top snowmobile destinations from Utah to Canada. It’s hard to beat this area with the amount of snowfall, access and variety of terrain we have immediate to town along with the abundant amenities and accommodations. Our terrain consists of open meadows and rolling hills to extreme hill climbs with endless backcountry tree lines in between for all levels of riders! We have numerous snow parks that give us access to over 500 miles of groomed trails and those trails give us access to all that awesome backcountry!

3. Are there any challenges to being a female athlete in this sport?

The biggest challenge for me is being small - weight placement and transfer play a big role where the sled goes and how it floats on the snow. I definitely expend more energy moving around on my sled to “influence” it through the challenging terrain than my male riding partners do! Another challenge is finding gear for female riders that allows good motion, breathes well, has features for the elements, has a flattering fit, and is stylish with fun colors.

This year I am excited to be working with Divas Snow Gear as they have come out with a new line of gear called Avid Technical Gear built as I described above and is easy to layer up in and shed as needed - I’m always cold starting out, but turn into a furnace when we get into the good off-trail riding (or I get stuck and have to dig myself out)!

4. Where is your favorite spot to ride?

I have a few secret spots I am keeping to myself, but the back side of Brundage offers tons of riding and often has the best snow closest to town - just follow a groomed trail from one of the many snow parks surrounding the mountain and then bounce off in any direction you want to go!

5. What should someone new to the sport be aware of?

Investing in good clothes, helmets, goggles and boots to keep you dry and warm will greatly improve your experience. Layering so you can adjust for changing conditions or physical exertion is important. Bring extra gloves and goggles, too. Visit Mile High Power Sports in McCall for a great selection of all the gear you need! You should also have basic knowledge on sled maintenance and repairs - for example, know how to change belts and spark plugs. Backcountry survival skills and essential survival equipment are very important too. And always check your local weather and avalanche advisories before going out. Be sure to wear a beacon and have a backpack with a probe and shovel even if trail riding - you may stumble upon a group who needs help even if you’re not playing on the hills. I also highly recommend dual bag avalanche backpacks like those made by ABS. We were in an avalanche two seasons ago that buried one of our friends. He was wearing a dual bag ABS pack and one of his bags didn’t deploy, but the second one did and it saved his life!

INGREDIENTS

In a large sauté pan sweat the onions and garlic until beginning to brown, add juniper • 1 lb Ground Venison and rosemary, continue to cook for just a minute or two until fragrant. Remove from • 1/4 lb Ground Beef 70/30 heat and cool.

• 1 cups Minced White Onion • 1 Tbls Minced Garlic • 1 tsp Toasted, Ground Juniper Berries In a mixing bowl large enough to hold all ingredients, mix together bread crumbs, eggs, and cooled onion mixture. By hand, mix in ground meats, salt and pepper. Mix until well • 2 tsp Chopped Fresh Rosemary combined. Cook off a small piece to check for seasoning and adjust as necessary.
