WELCOME TO McCALL Full Circle. Like so many people, it was the abundant recreational opportunities and amenities that first attracted me to West Central Mountain Corridor. My wife and I visited frequently to camp, hike, fish, and downhill ski here. We loved the area so much that we bought a piece of property to retire on. The more time we spent in this beautiful area, the more motivated we became to make a permanent move—ahead of schedule. My wife relocated first, to help start up Idaho First Bank. I joined my wife in 2008, and we became small business owners with the purchase of May Security and got to call McCall our home. Why am I telling you all this? To thank all of our visitors and second homeowners for supporting our community. I feel so fortunate to be able to serve our second homeowners, guests and locals. People who come to McCall, whether as a tourist, second homeowner or full-time resident, are unique. They are doers and want to embrace all that McCall area has to offer, become part of the community, and make a difference. Whether your passion is for camping, fishing, biking, hiking, golf, water sports, snow sports, relaxing, shopping or dining, McCall is the perfect temp for every season and experience. We are happy to welcome you to our proud community!

Jay Masterson, Board President

Mountain Biking puts McCall on the Map By McKenzie Kraemer Mountain biking in the McCall area has been quietly evolving. While the rugged backcountry trails that put us on the map are still prime, the addition of purpose-built trails is changing the landscape. From wide meadow trails at Ponderosa State Park to gravity trails at lift-serviced Brundage and Tamarack to freeride trails at Bear Basin and Jug Mountain Ranch, McCall offers a diverse playground for bikers of all abilities.

In 2015, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) named McCall a “Silver Ride Center. This designation is reserved for destinations with large-scale mountain bike facilities with the best the sport has to offer. Currently, only 37 IMBA Ride Centers have been named worldwide. So what is the hype all about? Explore the growing network of trail options in the McCall area and start planning your next ride!

The NEW Payette Lake Trail

The Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association (CIMBA) will be breaking ground this summer on a brand new 33-mile trail around Payette Lake. “We see this as the showcase trail for McCall,” says Joe Weede, president of CIMBA. Modeled after the Tahoe Rim Trail in Lake Tahoe, the new trail will be open to mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners. The first phase of the project will see between 4 to 7 miles of trail built to connect the existing Payette Rim Trail to North Beach on Payette Lake. Subsequent phases are in the planning stage, but no set timeframe for the project’s completion has been set. “We want a good product with a professional builder on board so the trails are sustainable,” says Weede. Enter IMBA Trail Solutions. An international leader in trail design and construction, IMBA Trail Solutions has been hired to spearhead the Payette Lake Trail development. The vision for the entire trail system is to appeal to a broad range of users. The difficulty level is categorized as “intermediate” with the biggest climb topping out at 700 feet. Otherwise, most ascents and descents will hover around 200 feet in elevation change. Dave Bingaman, CIMBA trail coordinator, says “the phase one route alone is going to be phenomenal.” For updates on the Payette Lake Trail progress, visit Continued page 8

Lift Service

Catch a ride to the top of the mountain and save your legs for the ride down! Gravity is your friend on the array of lift-serviced trails in the McCall area. “The three lift service areas we have are nothing alike,” says Weede, “and that is a good thing!” Between the type of soil, traction, trail construction style, resort size, and après biking amenities, there are plenty of options to choose from. Fast becoming the state’s premier freeride destination, the flowy singletrack at Jug Mountain Ranch is easily accessed with a shuttle ride to the top. Try Vandelay and Harper’s Hollow for an intermediate introduction to the hand built trails at JMR. Wide open sections flow into optional rock features while tight trees and switchbacks will challenge your technical side. For expert riders, Exfoliator is a must. This half mile trail is short and sweet with big doubles and long tabletops for a unique jump line experience.

The variety of trails at Brundage Mountain Resort means the experience always stays fresh. Jump on the BlueBird Quad and enjoy the view on your way to the 7,640 foot summit. For a scenic cruise to the bottom, we love Elk Trail. Six miles in length, this route takes you along open areas with stunning views, along shaded tree-lined sections, and across scenic creek crossings. Want to get your heart pumping? Try Hidden Valley. This trail flows through rock gardens and vertical drops, tight corners, log

rides, and fast chutes. We guarantee you will have a white knuckle grip the whole way down. To the south of McCall, Tamarack Resort’s trails twist, turn, roll, and drop. Constructed by IMBA Trail Solutions, this trail system is designed to test your balance and technical skills. For a big dose of brown pow, Super G is a great place to start. This intermediate trail starts at the top of the lift and serves up flowy corners and short drops. To test your mettle, we recommend SmokeJumper. Along with fun jumps, drops, and creek crossings, this trail also has optional double black diamond lines if you are feeling adventurous. Photo courtesy Jug Mountain Ranch

The Bike Park Experience

The hunt for one trail that can satisfy the whole family can be a challenge. Maybe that is why preferences are changing. “More and more people are looking for a bike park experience,” says Weede. “Everyone can take different routes and all meet back up at the car…or the restaurant for a beer.” McCall’s bike parks alleviate the pressure of finding the “perfect trail” by offering something for all riding abilities in one location. For beginners, stick to wide, lower trails like Jug Mountain Ranch’s South Boundary, North Elk Loop, or South Elk Lollypop. Tamarack’s Meadow Trails are also a great place for relaxed riding. Intermediate riders will love Bear Basin’s Grand Traverse, Blue Ridge Loop, and Rising Sun trails while Growler at Brundage is a great family-friendly option. Continued page 12

Expert riders won’t be left in the mud at McCall’s bike parks. Steep rocky descents, road gaps, wood features, tables, bridges, skinnys, and berms await your riding pleasure. Jug Mountain Ranch’s Double Shot Freeride Trail and Stitches are three miles of downhill bliss. Tamarack’s Stage Fright and Rock Star offer highly technical rock features while the newly constructed Lower Hidden Valley trail at Brundage turns the second half of this expert ride into a hand-built challenge course with rock jumps, berms, wood features, and log rides. We also love Bear Basin’s Upper Drain and Ditch Witch for technical riding with a view! Continued page 14

Backcountry Trails

“McCall is a super special place,” says Weede. “The trails you can ride are unlike anything else out there.” And it takes a lot of dedicated work to keep every mile of epic trail in prime condition. This work is done, in large part, by the Forest Service and volunteers from groups like CIMBA and the Central Idaho Trail Riders Alliance. To get out and experience these phenomenal backcountry trails, we recommend starting with the Crestline Trail, the East Fork of Lake Fork Trail, and the Loon Lake Trail. One of the most scenic trails in the area, Crestline is 11 miles of magic. The route will take you past Pearl Lake, Brush Lake, Heart Lake, Sisters Lakes, Squaw Lake, Buck Lake and Blackwell Lake – how can you beat that? To get to the trailhead, drive on Warren Wagon Road for 14.5 miles and turn right onto Forest Service road 432. Take the left fork at the first junction, the right fork at the second and then the trail starts off the road about 5 miles up.

Photo courtesy Payette Area Composite Mountain Bike Team

East Fork of Lake Fork is a 10 mile cross country ride with technical rock features mixed with smooth singletrack riding. Most riders will turn around at Idler Creek, but the trail does continue on for another mile of challenging terrain. The return is fast, making this trail a fun out and back. To access the trail, take Lick Creek Road to

the Lake Fork Campground. One mile past the campground, cross the bridge and turn right into the dispersed camping area to park. We can’t talk about McCall’s backcountry riding without recommending Loon Lake. Rated as an IMBA “Epic Ride,” Loon Lake Trail combines fast singletrack, switchbacks, and pristine scenery. The route is 21 miles long, but the effort is well worth it. Be sure to explore the World War II B-23 “Dragon Bomber” at the far side of the lake which crashed in 1943 while trying to make an emergency landing. All eight passengers survived after three crew members spent 14 days hiking 42 miles through deep snow to the Lake Fork Guard Station. Access the trailhead by taking Warren Wagon Road 36 miles to the Chinook Campground. Continued page 16

Skills Park

In 2016, McCall opened a Skills Park next to the Harshman Skate Park on Idaho Street. Tucked in a grove of aspens, the Skills Park is a great place for the community to practice and become better riders. The park features a pump track, jump lines, a log skinny, and berms so new riders can hone their skills.

Bike Tuning

Need a tune-up? McCall has three shops that can get you back on the trail! Stop by Edgewood Cycle (215 Commerce Street), Home Town Sports (300 Lenora Street), or Gravity Sports (503 Pine Street) for great service and gear.

Featuring recipes from Mile High Marina Photo courtesy Mile High Marina

Nothing says summer like sitting on the patio at the Mile High Marina, margarita in hand, watching the boats come and go from the docks. The casual, beachy vibe at this local hot spot is the perfect addition to the downtown scene. We love the “World Famous” Baja Fish Tacos, the Grilled Ahi Salad, Smok’in Jack’s Jalapeno Artichoke Dip, and bucket of Coronitas. Looking to recreate some of the delicious fare from Mile High Marina at home? We have the official recipes of two more favorites for you to try!

Ingredients: • 2 oz Patron Silver tequila • 2 tsp agave nectar • Juice of one or two limes • 1 oz Citronage or Cointreau • 2-3 fresh basil leaves • 2-3 cucumber slices In a cocktail shaker combine basil, cucumber, lime juice and agave. Muddle well. Add tequila, Citronage and a hand full of ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into a chilled glass with ice. Garnish with cucumber wheel. Serves 1.

SHRIMP CEVICHE Ingredients: • 2-3 lbs cooked shrimp (lightly grilled or wok fried) diced into ¼ inch pieces • 2-3 large tomatoes, diced • 1 red onion, diced • 1 bunch cilantro, diced fine • 1 serrano or jalapeno pepper, diced fine (heat is personal, so you may need to experiment) • 8 limes, juiced (approx. 1 cup) • 8 lemons, juiced (approx. 1 cup) • 2 oranges squeezed (approx. ½ cup) • 2 large cucumbers, diced into ¼ inch pieces • 1 tsp kosher salt or to taste • 1 tbl dried Mexican oregano Since this recipe calls for cooked shrimp, there is no need to “cook or marinate” the shrimp in the citrus juices. Simply combine all the ingredients in a glass or stainless bowl and stir gently to combine. Let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes and adjust seasonings. Spoon into margarita or decorative glasses and garnish with avocado, shaved radish, and lime wedge. Serve with your favorite hot sauce like Tapatio or Cholula and tortilla chips. Serves 6-12.

It’s more than a marina, it’s a destination HOT spot!

The Scenic Route By McKenzie Kraemer

Unplug. It’s a loaded word. We know we should set the technology down, but unplugging makes us anxious. But disconnecting from technology helps us connect to naturally scenic settings. If you are ready to take your eyes off of the screen and enjoy some face time with nature, we have just the guide to get you off the technology highway and onto the scenic route. Continued page 24

CANOE/SUP Payette Lake is a scenic show-stopper. This deep alpine lake right in the heart of downtown McCall is perfect for summer boating, sailing, jet skiing, and swimming. When it comes to kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding, however, locals know that Payette Lake plays second fiddle to the North Fork of the Payette River.

TIP: Make a reservation for rental equipment

in advance. Backwoods Adventures, Gravity Sports, Home Town Sports, and the McCall Sports Exchange all offer summer water rentals.

This lazy stretch of river, aptly named “The Meanders, is meant for ambling. Flanked by soaring pine trees and lush wetlands, it is not uncommon to see deer, eagles, fox, or even the occasional moose on the bank. Beneath the surface, schools of fish dart back and forth under your paddles in the crystal clear water. Gliding down the river, the hustle and bustle of the day fades away. With only the scenic splendor to distract you, it is a perfect setting to catch up on some quality family time. Trust us; laughter just seems to sound better when it carries over the water! Aside from meeting a few fellow paddlers along the way, there is plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the river. We recommend launching at the North Beach boat ramp. If you need to rent equipment, Backwoods Adventures is on hand to help you with canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards (lifejackets included). In the heat of summer, the launch area can be a bit congested, so for the best experience, set out up river. The farther you go, the fewer people you will see. Remember to pack some snacks or a picnic lunch. There are lots of great beaches to stop at along the way! Continued page 26 Photo courtesy John Webster/

BEACH CRUISERS We are in awe (serious awe) of the epic downhill mountain bikers who tackle the diverse terrain around McCall. For those with the skills, it is definitely worth a try. But let’s face it, not all of us have the balance and reflexes to keep from flying over a bike’s handlebars in a banked turn on steep singletrack. Knowing the limits of our ability, some of us prefer sticking to easy cruising…beach cruising, that is! A beach cruiser is the perfect way to navigate McCall in the summer. Jump on a cruiser for a leisurely ride to grab a morning coffee at Mountain Java. Gallery hop through downtown McCall and skip the hassle of parking. Grab a group of friends and hit up a few stops along the McCall Ale Trail. Take the family for an after-dinner treat at Ice Cream Alley. The possibilities are endless. On a cruiser, getting from point A to point B offers up an opportunity to slow down and take in the scene around you. Because a cruiser typically has a limited number of gears, a slower pace is natural. Ditch the car and opt for the breeze on your face as you bypass summer traffic to strike out to explore the side streets and pathways (you may even encounter some of our famous “town deer”). For an easy, scenic ride, we love combining the Spring Mountain Ranch and downtown McCall paved pathways into a loop. Start at the Payette Lakes Middle School and head north. Follow the path as you pass the McCall Golf Course and Spring Mountain Ranch neighborhood. At Lick Creek Road, turn west toward Ponderosa State Park. From the four-way

stop at Davis Street, jump on to McCall Avenue toward Mile High Marina then merge onto Mill Road. From here, head into Legacy Park for picture-perfect views of Payette Lake. To connect to the final stretch of pathway, ride along 2nd Street to City Hall. The pathway veers south toward Harshmans Skate Park and connects to Deinhard Lane. From here, choose to go east along Deinhard back to the Middle School, or cross Deinhard and keep going south…the trail ends right near Broken Horn Brewing and, let’s face it, you deserve a beer after all that scenic fun!

SCENIC CHAIRLIFT RIDE AT BRUNDAGE Riding a chairlift in the summer is a unique sensation. There is something about seeing the ground clear of snow that makes the entire experience feel new and fresh. The smell of pine trees fills your nose as you fly up the mountain. And when you get to the summit? It feels like you are standing on top of the world! On a clear day, Payette Lake, Long Valley, and the Seven Devil’s Wilderness can be seen from the top of Brundage Mountain. You can even catch a glimpse of Oregon’s Blue Mountains. See the buildings and homes in McCall and New Meadows transformed into tiny dots on the landscape, and boat wakes on Payette Lake scaled down to little stripes of white on a blue canvas. After you have had your fill of sweeping panoramic views, head back down the mountain by riding the chairlift, hiking, or biking.

ZIPLINE TOURS AT TAMARACK Writer Arthur Plotnik once called the Ponderosa pine “a Clint Eastwood of a tree.” These massive pines are rugged, lean, and hearty, living 500 years or more. Ironically, these resilient trees have a softer side. The bark of a Ponderosa smells like butterscotch (yes, seriously!). It is easy to find Ponderosa pines dotting the landscape around McCall, but Tamarack Resort has a novel way to appreciate these majestic trees…by ziplining into one! Tamarack’s thrilling, action-packed zipline tour includes eight zip lines and two suspension bridges covering 3,500 feet of stunning mountain terrain. Fly over creeks, canyons, and forest while enjoying stunning views of Lake Cascade and the valley below. The pièce de résistance of the tour is zipping onto a platform built around a Ponderosa pine. The circular structure soars about 100 feet off of the ground and affords spectacular views along with a big adrenaline rush! Once on the platform, you can feel the movement of the tree. We will admit the sensation is a bit out of this world, but don’t worry, the expert guides make sure you are harnessed securely at all times. After zipping into the tree, a quick walk around the platform and you are all set to zip right back out. Zipline Tours are available seven days a week during the summer season. The morning tour departs at 9am and 10am and the afternoon tour departs at 1pm and 2pm.

Its always the perfect temperature in McCall, but there is truly something a little extra-special about summer.

Payette Lake comes to life. Restaurant patios open up and recreational activities abound. From water skiing, enjoying the beach, to bike riding, there is something for everyone in McCall. In days gone by Payette Lake provided newcomers in the area food supplies and a means to move goods from one end to the other. Jim Warren discovered gold in the 1860’s in what would eventually became known as Warren, Idaho. During the gold boom Warren was one of the largest settlements in the Idaho Territory at the time. In those days a wagon trail and pack string trail headed north along the west side of Payette Lake moving supplies to the gold mines and outlying areas. That trail became what we now know today as Warren Wagon Road.

With ever increasing demands for lumber and mining supplies in the back country the lake route offered larger weight haul and shorter haul time. THE LYDA was one of the early work boats powered by steam transporting from what was known as Lake Port, now McCall, to the north end of Payette Lake, reloading here on wagons and pack strings to head for the gold bearing mines farther north. THE LYDA would haul passengers along the route for site seeing to help cover the cost of operations. Life was thriving in the area. THE LYDA could be seen hauling passengers and towing a "dancing barge" for local events. After THE LYDA retired a new vessel, the 60' Winston was built to replace her. The Winston took over the haul route until the demand of freight hauling shifted to more economical motorized means. In 2012 THE IDAHO started cruising on beautiful Payette Lake offering luxury cruising with a heated lower cabin, restrooms and a full beverage and snack bar on board. To reduce fossil fuel consumption solar panels have been installed on THE IDAHO for enviro-friendly cruising. THE IDAHO is the perfect venue for private events and public cruising on Payette Lake. Payette Lake has a long history of work boats gracing its shores. THE IDAHO is looking forward to seeing you on the lake this summer to continue this long tradition and share more bits of history. Afternoon, evening, sunset and private event cruises.

You don’t have to be an avid golfer to appreciate the natural splendor of our five area courses. Teeing off over a green meadow with a snowcapped mountain at your back may not automatically improve your handicap, but it will improve your mood! Fairways flanked by towering pines, perfectly manicured greens overlooking the crystal-clear water, and tee boxes that offer dramatic views of the mountains beyond are just a few of the striking scenes that await. Each golf course has its own appeal, but we rounded up some of our favorite holes that showcase both dramatic scenery and challenging play.

Jug Mountain Ranch: Set at the base of Jughandle Mountain, the 16th hole at Jug Mountain Ranch is a long par 5, dogleg right. The tee shot is played uphill and over natural wetlands with a perfect view of Jughandle Mountain. Once on the fairway, thick groves of trees line each side of the hole, while Boulder Creek crosses the narrowing fairway near the green.

Cascade Golf Course: Tucked next to Lake

Cascade, this 9-hole course may just be the most scenic in the area. Each hole offers beautiful views of the lake, but we love #6 for its exciting tee shot over the water. Starting on a bluff above this par 4, a solid drive is required to carry the water. Women can play the forward tee, but we recommend taking a shot at playing from the tips on this hole!

27 holes to choose from, finding a favorite at McCall Golf Club is a tough choice, but Aspen #1 is a beauty. The 370 yard par 4 has a tree-lined fairway with a stunning view of Brundage Mountain and water features to the left of the fairway and green, which was rebuilt in 2016. If you are lucky, you may also see some of the resident deer wander through your tee shot adding both challenge and aesthetic appeal to Aspen #1.

MeadowCreek Golf Resort: Located at the 45th

parallel in New Meadows, this 6,696 yard course offers a thrilling round of golf. With par 4s and 5s dominating this course, we love hole 13 for its short and sweet challenge. Precision is the name of the game with a tee shot over natural wetlands. Your reward? Expansive views of the golf course and mountains beyond. You may even catch a glimpse of Brundage Mountain in the distance.

dual personality. Half of the holes wind through mature pines while the other half take advantage of wide open views. Hole 16 is the latter. This par 3 offers plenty of challenge with a tee shot over the water paired with the scenic beauty of a stream that crosses the hole and flows smoothly into a large pond. Don’t be fooled by the serene setting. While the water features add ambiance, they can be hazards to your score. Continued page 32

HIKE Hiking is hands down one of the most popular activities in the McCall area. There is a huge variety of trails to explore. Only have an hour? No problem, we have a trail for that. Want to turn a hike into a daylong adventure? We have that covered, too. And the scenery is epic no matter which trail you take. Photo courtesy McKenzie Kraemer

If you make only one purchase during your trip to McCall, we recommend it be “The Hiker’s Guide to McCall and Cascade.” This book is fabulous. Author Scott Marchant provides a wealth of information on 55 hikes in the area that covers everything from the kid-friendly 1.8 mile Meadow Marsh Loop in Ponderosa State Park to the strenuous 11.6 mile Twentymile Lakes route. Using this book as a guide, there are a number of hikes to discover that may otherwise be overlooked. One of our favorites is Hard Creek Lake. This hike is an easy 3.2 miles, accessed from the Hard Creek Campground about 19 miles past Brundage Mountain Resort. What makes this a favorite? First, the trail takes you through a range of beautiful landscapes including wildflower-filled meadows, a boulder field, and high mountain forests. The stunning alpine lake flanked by steep granite walls at the end also earns this hike major kudos. Not to mention, you will likely have the place all to yourself! A scenic route at its finest.

Looking for more hikes? Try the Boulder/Louie Lake route. You can hike to either lake independently or make it a loop. Goose Creek Falls is another popular hike and can be accessed from either the Last Chance Campground or the trailhead at the Gordon Titus Parking Lot along Goose Lake/Brundage Road. Pearl Lake is a great family hike if you are headed up Warren Wagon Road, while Snowslide Lake and Duck Lake are great options off of Lick Creek Road.

5 Easy Day Trips from McCall the Whole Family Will Love By Lindsey Harris Photo courtesy Black Pine Deer Farm

McCall. A mecca for endless summer fun for the whole family. You have eaten your weight in burgers and shakes at My Father’s Place, spent your afternoons at Legacy Beach, cruised Payette Lake, hiked Osprey Point in Ponderosa State Park, and now you are ready for some new adventures outside the city limits. We have you covered! Try these five familyfriendly day trips and get out to explore the greater McCall area.

#1 Donnelly

The population sign in Donnelly may only read 125, but make no mistake, this friendly community has much to offer. Near Donnelly you can see baby deer at the Black Pine Deer Farm, visit the historic community of Roseberry, get out on beautiful Lake Cascade at the Tamarack waterfront, and enjoy scrumptious food at Cougar Dave’s.

BLACK PINE DEER FARM Whitetail deer may be the resident townies of McCall, but to the east of Donnelly along the idyllic Farm-To-Market Road, you can get up close and personal with

more than 20 historic structures that make it easy to imagine life as it was in Valley County a century ago. We recommend making the Valley County Museum your first stop in Roseberry. The museum is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Friday through Sunday from 1 pm – 5 pm. Every July, Roseberry hosts the popular Summer Music Festival and celebrates the end of summer with an annual ice cream social over Labor Day. Roseberry is also a fabulous venue for a wedding!

LUNCH AT COUGAR DAVE’S Photo courtesy Black Pine Deer Farm

European Fallow deer. Experience a little slice of country life at the Black Pine Deer Farm. This 20-year-old “mom and pop” operation specializes in breeding deer for venison, hides, and antlers and also happens to be one of the largest deer farms in the Pacific Northwest. Also known as “King’s Deer” for their healthy lean meat, these deer are slightly smaller with shorter legs than their Whitetail cousin. Their hides are a beautiful cinnamon color complete with spots that can range from white to black. Farm tours are available from mid-May through Labor Day and are a great opportunity to learn about and to interact with these adorable creatures. Reservations with at least 24 hours notice are required as this is an active, working farm!

Soaking up the local history can work up an appetite. Load the kids back in the car and head west on Roseberry Road to Donnelly for a Photo courtesy Cougar Dave’s delicious lunch at Cougar Dave’s. Named after Dave Lewis, a hunter and trapper from the area, Cougar Dave’s serves up tasty local favorites. You can’t go wrong with their locally-sourced bison burger and large, golden steak fries. Interested in the lighter fare? Choose their steak salad tossed with fresh spring greens, pomegranate dressing, feta cheese and sundried tomatoes.

HISTORIC ROSEBERRY From the Black Pine Deer Farm, continue making your way along Farm-to-Market Road to the townsite of Roseberry. Founded in 1888, Roseberry in its prime had a hotel, two blacksmiths, two general stores, a restaurant, a creamery, butcher shop, and a mill. When the railroad was established only a couple of miles to the west in present-day Donnelly, most of Roseberry’s population and commerce relocated, too. Today, you can visit the town and tour Photo courtesy McKenzie Kraemer

TAMARACK WATERFRONT Rubbing your bellies from a savory meal at Cougar Dave’s, hop back in the car and head west to Tamarack Resort’s Waterfront Cabana. The Cabana is located at the Poison Creek boat launch. The boat launch is part of the Idaho State Parks so be sure to use your Idaho State Park Passport sticker to waive this fee. You can also park at the Tamarack Resort Aspen Parking Lot for an easy Continued page 40

plenty of scenic places to make a pit stop, stretch your legs, and immerse yourself in the old growth forest along the trail. We recommend stopping at the Evergreen Campground, five miles south of the Tamarack Saw Mill, for easy access to the trail. The campground has plenty of parking and restrooms.

two-minute walk down to the water. At the waterfront, choose from dozens of fun-ready items including stand-up paddle boards (SUPs), tandem kayaks, a wake boat, or a luxury pontoon boat that can easily accommodate a large group. If you are feeling extra adventurous try the Hobie Tandem Island Sailboat. Calm and uncrowded, Lake Cascade delivers nearly 50 miles of warm water and scenery to explore. On your way out to Tamarack, there is also Mountain Meadow Adventure Rentals at the Tamarack Falls junction. Choose from jet skis, paddle boards, UTV’s and kayaks.

Add an Overnight Stay: Keep the fun going at Tamarack with a stay in one of the beautifully appointed cottages, townhomes, chalets, or hotel suites at the Resort. Visit for pricing and reservations.

#2 Cambridge

Pack your bikes or walking shoes, water, snacks, sunscreen and your bathing suits for a lovely, fun-filled day that includes the Weiser River Trail, Mundo Hot Springs, and Idaho BBQ done right at the Intersection Bar and Grill in New Meadows.

MUNDO HOT SPRINGS After exploring the Weiser River Trail, continue south on Highway 95 to Mundo Hot Springs. Located just outside of the historic farming community of Cambridge, about an hour southwest of McCall, Mundo provides soothing waters, food, accommodations, and warm hosts. This charming spot is reminiscent of a boutique bed and breakfast with owners who go above and beyond to make your visit memorable. To keep guests comfortable in the summer months when outside temperatures rise, the geothermal water is cooled by the adjacent Weiser River to keep soakers happy. Mundo is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for cleaning, but open 4 pm-8 pm Wednesday-Thursday, and noon-8 pm Friday-Sunday. Photo courtesy Mundo Hot Springs

From McCall, drive north on Highway 55 toward New Meadows. Continue through the intersection of Highways 55 and 95 and follow Highway 95 south. Just past New Meadows, the Weiser River Trail begins. This remarkable trail started as a grassroots effort between the Friends of the Weiser Trail, the non-profit organization that maintains the trail, and the Union Pacific Railroad, which deeded 84 miles of old railroad for recreational use. The trail stretches from New Meadows to Weiser and offers Photo courtesy Mundo Hot Springs

INTERSECTION BBQ Cap off your hiking and swimming adventure with some of the best BBQ in Idaho. As you make your way back to McCall, the Intersection BBQ in New Meadows is just the ticket! Since 2013, owner Shannon Fairchild and her crew have been cooking up “rustic comfort food” with slow smoked BBQ to rival any in the region. No pre-packaged sauces or dressings at the Intersection…they make everything in-house from scratch. We recommend ordering Shannon’s signature pastrami, but do it quick! This local favorite, brined and cured for a month before serving, tends to sell out quickly. Intersection BBQ’s brisket is also a hot item on the menu and their burger meat is locally sourced from Double R Ranch. Photo courtesy Intersection BBQ

After this lovely day of seeing some hidden gems, we can promise that both you and the kiddos will sleep well and be ready for what your next summer day in McCall has to offer.

Add an Overnight Stay: Mundo Hot Springs is a great place to turn your day trip into an overnight adventure. Private cabins, RV sites with full hookups, and tent sites are available. Please visit for pricing and reservation information.

#3 Burgdorf From the southern end of Payette Lake, you can see impressive granite peaks to the north. Beyond those mountains are millions of acres of wilderness and history just waiting to be explored! This day trip provides some easy, accessible options to exploring that wilderness with a scenic hike to Josephine Lake, a swim at historic Burgdorf Hot Springs, and a visit to a special peak made entirely out of quartz. JOSEPHINE LAKE HIKE Start your adventure on Warren Wagon Road, just north of Shore Lodge. Traveling west along this historic road will take you past nostalgic cabins on Payette Lake, past beautiful North Beach, along the North Fork of the Payette River, past Upper Payette Lake, and beyond Secesh Summit. Three miles after the summit, take a left on Forest Service Road 316, marked “Josephine Lake.” The road to the trailhead is a bit bumpy so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended. The hike to Josephine Lake is easy and familyfriendly, with just under a mile to walk each way. Greeting you at the end of the hike is a stunning 13-acre lake that hugs an impressive granite cirque at 7,400 feet above sea level. If you felt like fishing, be sure to make a stop at Ridley’s Market before you leave town. Here you can pick up poles, tackle, and a fishing license in the store’s outdoor section. You don’t have to fish at Josephine Lake, but let’s face it, nothing beats the joy on a kid’s face after catching a fish with their Barbie or Batman pole.

BURGDORF HOT SPRINGS Follow your scenic hike to Josephine Lake with a relaxing soak at Burgdorf Hot Springs. Leave the trailhead and continue north on Warren Wagon Road to the well-marked Burgdorf Junction. Turn left onto French Creek Road and travel approximately 2 miles to the hot springs. Established in the 1860s, Burgdorf is a step back in time and an

ode to the gold mining era. Present day, Burgdorf is still simple and rustic, but that is why we love it! Managers Caroline and Jim are exceptionally nice folks and are happy to fill you in on the history and the Burgdorf experience. The main pool is perfect for relaxing, but if you are feeling brave, try soaking in the “crab pots;” the original small pools right at the mouth of the geothermal springs. But be warned…these pools top out at an impressive 113 degrees. Swims are $8 for adults and $5 for kids 17 years and younger. Clean towels and suits are available for rent if a few family members arrive unprepared to swim. Pool hours are from 10 am-8 pm daily.

Quartz has long been known as a healing mineral that can amplify energy and thought. We aren’t sure if you will find total clarity by visiting Crystal Mountain, made of stunning white, yellow and pink quartz, but we are sure you will love this unique place. Crystal Mountain sits just above Burgdorf and is accessible by car or by foot with an easy Photo courtesy Nicole Musgrove hike. To drive to Crystal Mountain, turn right out of Burgdorf onto French Creek

Road and take your first right at Forest Service Road #247. Like many dirt roads in the area, it can get a bit bumpy so high clearance vehicles are recommended. Feel like stretching your legs? Remain parked at Burgdorf and walk up the road to Janette Campground. At the end of the small campground is a shaded, kid-friendly trail. At the top of the trail merge with FS Road #247 and follow a short distance to your destination. Hiking to Crystal Mountain is definitely our favorite way to get there. As you hike, the geology changes beneath your feet and the quartz rock are reminiscent of following a golden road to the stunning, jagged peak of Crystal Mountain.

Ethically Sourced. Fresh Roasted. Craft Coffee.

Add an Overnight Stay: We can’t say enough about the delightfully rustic cabins at Burgdorf Hot Springs. Built more than 150 years ago, these simple log cabins offer a unique experience the family will love. Visit for pricing and reservations.

#4 Warren

Beyond Burgdorf there is a backcountry gem that is an iconic part of our regional history. Founded in 1862, Warren is the fifth oldest town in Idaho and can be accessed by Warren Wagon Road, the same route taken more than 100 years ago by wagons bringing mined ore from Warren to McCall. The 45 mile drive (30 miles on paved road, 15 miles on dirt road) takes about 90 minutes. Before you head to Warren, we recommend stopping at the Payette National Forest Ranger Station in McCall (102 West Lake Street) to check out a free audio tour to be your guide for the day.

SECESH Travel along Warren Wagon Road and pass through the Burgdorf Junction. The road will transition from pavement to dirt and you will start to see family cabins dotting the landscape as you near the community of Secesh. Many of Photo courtesy Secesh Stage Stop these cabins are summer homes, but a few tried and true residents live in Secesh year-round. In the winter, Secesh and Warren are only accessible by snowmobile and mail and freight are flown in by ski plane. If the kids need a break from the car, the Secesh Stage Stop is a great place to pause and treat the family to ice cream.

Arriving in Warren, your first stop should be the Warren Guard Station to view historic photos, artifacts, and mining exhibits. From the Guard Station, peruse the town’s historic buildings including the Warren School, built in 1887 for $180, the Barn,

presumably constructed in the early 1800s and complete with gun ports, the Warren Hotel, built in 1912 after a large fire swept through town in 1904, and the Warren Dance Hall, built in 1905 and home to Saturday night dances featuring the fox trot and waltz. The Chinese Gardens are another must-see site located eight miles past Warren above the South Fork of the Salmon River on Forest Service Road 337. The gardens are all that remains of terraced fruit and vegetable gardens diligently maintained by the Chinese miners and modeled after traditional farming practices in their homeland. The most accessible garden is at Hays Station, the former Guard Station before it moved to Warren in 1918.

LUNCH AT THE BAUM SHELTER After all that historical exploration, you have probably worked up a solid appetite. The Baum Shelter in Warren has you covered. Known for their burgers, they also hand Photo courtesy Baum Shelter bread their finger steaks and chicken strips. We highly recommend the “Baum Shelter Baskets” with your choice of finger steaks, chicken strips, prawns, fish and chips, or hot wings. Baskets are served with your choice of side. In the summer, the Baum Shelter is open 7-days a week, from 11 am-8 pm on weekdays and 11 am-closing on the weekends.

With lunch complete, make your way back to McCall and enjoy a few scenic photo op locations at Landmark Summit, between Warren and Secesh, and at Secesh Summit, between Burgdorf and McCall.

Add an Overnight Stay: Can’t get enough of historic Warren? The Baum Shelter offers limited single cabins for guests looking to overnight. Please call (208) 634-4393 for availability and reservations.

#5 Riggins

Located 50 miles north of McCall along the impressive Salmon River, Riggins is known as Idaho’s whitewater capital. This small town nestled in the river canyon boasts a remarkable number of whitewater adventures that are sure to produce some famous family tales that only get bigger with each retelling. Between McCall and Riggins, the elevation changes Photo courtesy Mountain River Outfitters Photo courtesy Salmon River Tours from 5,200 feet to 1,800 feet. Why is this important? The drop in elevation makes Riggins a prime place to Explore historical homesteads like Polly Bemis and Shepp Ranch, enjoy hot, sunny days on the river along white sandy beaches that hike to a hot spring, and cool off with a swim in the river at one rival those found in the Caribbean. of the many beaches along the way. Find your perfect jet boat To really experience Riggins, we recommend getting an early start tours operated by the seasoned guides at Rapid River Outfitters, from McCall and choosing from two amazing options: whitewater Mountain River Outfitters, or Salmon River Tours. rafting or a jet boat tour.

To make the most of the awe-inspiring canyon walls of the “River of No Return,” being on a raft is the way to go. Experienced rafting guides can take you on everything from a relaxing family float to an adrenaline-pumping whitewater adventure. Choose from half day or full day rafting trips down the Main Salmon with outfitters Salmon Raft, Mountain River Outfitters, or H20 Idaho. Pick up some river knowledge from your guide, meet fellow visitors from around the world, Photo courtesy Mountain River Outfitters “ride the bull” through the Time Zone rapid, and enjoy lunch on a secluded white sand beach.

After a big day on the water, feed your hungry crew with some of the best authentic Mexican fare around. Pueblo Lindo Mexican Restaurant is conveniently located at the north end of McCall, right as you come back into town. Not only is the food delicious, the casual setting, impeccable service, and friendly staff are a perfect way to end a long day of adventuring. Try the crowd favorites including the Chile Verde, Pollo a la Crema, and Carne Asada tacos.

SCENIC JET BOAT TOUR For those looking to see more of the Salmon River Wilderness at faster speeds, a jet boat tour is a great option. Most outfitters offer a half day and full day tour, but we recommend going all in with the full day tour. The jet boat ride starts 28 miles from Riggins at the Vinegar Creek boat launch and takes you into the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area.

Region Comes Together in America’s Best Communities Contest Photo courtesy Mallory Haynes

UNITED WE THRIVE In 2014, our area embarked on a journey to find solutions to economic development in our rural community. We entered the America’s Best Communities (ABC) contest as the West Central Mountains (WCM), encompassing Meadows Valley and Valley County, including McCall, Donnelly, and Cascade. More than 300 communities from around the nation entered the contest by identifying strategies to strengthen and promote economic development in their own regions. For us, those strategies focused on six key areas: jobs, housing, transportation- infrastructure, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities, health and wellbeing, and regional communication. Our plan was chosen as one of the top 50 and we were awarded $50,000 to fully develop our community economic development strategy. In addition to hiring consultants to aid the WCM in our planning, our original committee of eight quickly grew into a regional steering committee of 20. By engaging each community in our region to identify common challenges, we were able to find common solutions. And that work paid off big! Even before submitting our final plan to the next ABC contest round, our economic development strategy was honored with the Vernon Deines Merit Award for an Outstanding Small Town Special Project Plan from The American Planning Association and the APA Idaho Outstanding Plan Award.

In addition to these awards, our plan moved us forward in the contest to the top 15, next to the top eight in 2015, which came with an additional $100,000 to start implementing our strategies. For a chance to win the top prize in April 2016, each semi-finalist was challenged to make as much progress on their economic development plans as possible within an 11 month timeframe. The WCM team came back to the region and got to work on 21 tactics to move forward. Over the course of 11 months, the committee was able to complete all but one of the tactics set forth. On April 19, 2017, the ABC contest came to an end. Although our plan was not chosen, we could not be more proud of the growth this contest has jump-started in our community. Moving forward, we plan to create the West Central Mountains Community Foundation and work diligently to fund future economic development projects to support our long term vision. United We Thrive!

Slice of Life

McCall in Bloom It is hard to miss the beautiful blooming flowers throughout McCall during the summer season. The stunning pinks, purples, yellows, reds, and greens take center stage along city streets and in front of our local businesses. The charm these stunning displays add to the community helps set the stage for an unforgettable summer experience in McCall. What you may not know is that many of these displays are part of the “McCall in Bloom” contest sponsored by the McCall Improvement Committee. McCall in Bloom started in 2010 as part of the national contest, America in Bloom. In addition to local businesses and residents competing in this fun, friendly beautification contest, McCall also competes nationally against other small towns throughout the country. Each summer, a team of experienced judges from America in Bloom visit McCall for three days and evaluate the town on floral displays, turf and landscaping, urban forestry, environmental efforts, historic preservation and overall impression. Since our start in 2010, McCall has won four major awards including:

2011 Overall Environmental Awareness Winner 2012 Outstanding Community Under 3,500 population 2014 Outstanding Community Under 3,500 population 2014 Induction in the America in Bloom Circle of Champions (only 20 cities out of 200 are honored with this award).

As a local business or resident, the McCall in Bloom program encourages everyone to “spruce up” the town through cleanup efforts and flower plantings. More than 100 businesses, residents, and non-profit groups have been involved in the program. Participants in McCall in Bloom can enter as a Contestant (and be judged by a panel of community volunteers) or as a Partner (supporting community beautification without entering the judging competition). Contestants can enter into six categories including Large Commercial, Small Commercial, Residential, Non-Profit, Residential Edibles, and Commercial Edibles. Winners of the local McCall in Bloom competition are awarded the coveted “Golden Gnome.” Look for the official McCall in Bloom logo in front of your favorite business or restaurant to see who is participating this year.

What is title insurance?

When you’re buying a home, title insurance is a policy that protects your investment and property rights. There are two different types of title insurance: Owner’s Policy and Lender’s Policy.

An Owner’s Policy protects your property rights for as long as you own the home.

A Lender’s Policy is usually required by the lender and protects only the lender’s financial interests.

For more information about owner’s title insurance, contact First American Title Company. 616 N. Third Street, Suite 101 | McCall, ID 83638 | 208.634.4705 209 N. Main Street | Cascade, ID 83611 | 208.382.1334

PLAN AHEAD In the heat of summer, we can’t help but dream of champagne snow, creamy corduroy, and fresh powder stashes. When the snow starts to fall, McCall transforms into a winter wonderland, see what’s in store…

SNOWMOBILE There is a brand-new way to ride in McCall! Brundage Mountain and CM Backcountry Rentals now offer guided snowmobile tours. Whether you strike out on your own or follow an experienced guide riders of all abilities can find everything from gentle slopes to challenging hillsides that tempt even the most adventurous of the “high-markers.”

NORDIC & SNOWSHOE When the sun shines in the winter, powder can play second fiddle to a fresh groomer…a staple for Nordic skiers and something McCall has plenty of. The rolling meadows and challenging hills winding through the trees offers unparalleled options. Want to trek into a winter wonderland? Snowshoes are a great way to blaze your own trail!

FAMILY FUN If cabin fever threatens, get the entire family out to play! Strap on the ice skates and hit up open skate at the Manchester Ice Center or ride up the magic carpet at the Activity Barn to fly down the hill on a snow tube. For a quick sledding adventure, try Legacy Park in downtown McCall. The gentle slope is perfect for the little ones!

ALPINE SKI With three alpine ski areas, McCall is home to some of the finest Alpine skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. Untracked powder, smooth corduroy, and plenty of terrain park features to keep you shredding. Want to get out under the ropes? Access over 20,000 acres of snow with a cat ski trip or adventure with Payette Powder Guides. Photo courtesy Brundage Mountain Resort

WINTER EVENTS The entertainment heats up in the winter! Start with the Festival of Trees Thanksgiving weekend then cruise right into the holiday season with “Mountain Hollydays.” This two month extravaganza offers everything from wine tastings to shop local deals. In January, celebrate all things winter with the 10-day Winter Carnival.

DINING Get cozy! Our eateries and bistros offer a haven from the brisk weather. Enjoy everything from fresh pastries to locally sourced venison. Cuddle up and sip a hot toddy by the fire or gather your friends at one of our local breweries for some après ski pints. From tasty take-out to casual fine dining, we have something for everyone.

Fish on! This fun family sport isn’t just for the summer

Gear: No surprise here…warm clothing! In addition to bundling

months. Venture out and try your hand at ice fishing this winter on Lake Cascade, Horsethief Reservoir, or Warm Lake. Yellow perch and rainbow trout are the species you are after, and brightly colored jigs tipped with your choice of bait will help you reel them in. Most lakes freeze in December and offer a few months of prime fishing.

up, bring an auger, ice fishing rods, an ice scoop, and a sled to haul your gear. A chair, snacks, and hand warmers are also nice to have.

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED: Ice Depth: 4 inches of ice is required to safely venture out on foot, while 10 inches is necessary for snowmobiles. To ensure the ice is safe, drill a few test holes as you go and always err on the side of caution.

Technique: Experiment fishing at different water depths. Perch tend to like deeper water while trout can be found farther up. Jigging can be an effective technique. Slowly bring your line up a foot then allow it to settle back down, and repeat. The movement helps attract the fish’s attention.

Rules and Regulations: Daily trout limit is 6. No limit on perch, but check with Idaho Fish and Game for regulations that may apply to specific fishing areas. Up to five poles or lines are allowed per person and all lines must be attended by an angler at all times. An Idaho fishing license is required!
