Welcome to the Shores of Lake Michigan

Located directly along the shores of Lake Michigan, Manitowoc and Two Rivers are neighboring cities with much to offer visitors and residents alike. Here you can discover beautiful coastlines, delicious restaurants, extensive outdoor recreation, a growing arts scene, a bursting calendar of festivals and events and breathtaking surroundings. In many ways, Manitowoc and Two Rivers are known for and defined by the water. Wisconsin’s Maritime Capital, Manitowoc boasts a rich shipbuilding history, which remains a key piece of the city’s persona today. Manitowoc remains a working port, and companies like Burger Boat continue to produce custom yachts over 150 years later. With an expansive Great Lake and the Manitowoc River, there is no shortage of water for industry, recreation, exploration and education.

In our own backyard is the recently designated Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary. Featuring 36 known historic shipwreck sites up and down the shores of Lake Michigan, and another potential 60 yet to be discovered, one does not have to go too far to learn firsthand about the vessels that played a central role in our nation’s history.

This history also remains alive through the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. The museum features extensive exhibits that share the history of Manitowoc on Lake Michigan, as well as the maritime history of the entire state. In late 2022, Manitowoc was designated an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service because of the contributions made by Manitowoc’s businesses and citizens during the war. Manitowoc’s WWII heritage can still be explored today at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and through it’s annual events, like Subfest. While at the museum, you can step directly into WWII history as you board and tour the docked USS Cobia submarine. Even better? The sub is on Airbnb, so you can grab a few friends and sleep where the sailors slept! In summer, catch a bird’s eye view of the riverfront and lake by visiting the Sub Pub on the Water on the rooftop of the museum.

You can sip on a local lager, order food and play a game on their massive battleship board!

Manitowoc and Two Rivers have many spacious beaches to enjoy the Lake Michigan shoreline. Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers offers 50 acres of sandy beach. In addition, Neshotah Park has trails along the beach, concessions, playground equipment and a family-friendly zip line. On the weekends, there is often live music at the beach pavilion. Nearby, Point Beach State Forest features 3,000 acres of land and six miles of beach along the Lake Michigan shore. Point Beach also has family campsites, two large group

cabins and an outdoor group camp. In Manitowoc, Red Arrow Beach, Lighthouse Park Beach and Lakefront Beach are beautiful stretches of sand to relax on, splash through the waves with your pup or simply enjoy the scenery.

If you aren’t looking to put on a swimsuit, visit the West of the Lake Gardens – the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle while enjoying the best vantage point of the shore. Open from late May through early October, these six acres of nature include a Japanese garden, geraniums, koi pond, fibrous begonias, over 30,000 tulips, 800 roses and other seasonal trees and flowers. Stop by to walk through the gardens or find a seat amongst the greenery to enjoy the lakeside views.

Whether you’re hoping to catch a few fish or just catch a wave, set sail on a variety of charters, available in both Manitowoc and Two Rivers. In addition, at the Manitowoc Marina, you can rent kayaks and paddleboards to take out on the water. If heading out to the lake in your kayak is a little too daunting, take on a water trail. The Twin Rivers, East and West, extend from Shoto to Two Rivers on the West Twin and Mishicot to Two Rivers on the East. This creates a 20-mile long “U” shape water trail. Dunes Nature Center, Veterans Park, or Paddler’s Park to launch your kayak and float the trail. In Manitowoc, kayak launches to paddle the Manitowoc River are available at Manitou Park, Schuette Park, and along the Maritime Museum Riverwalk, with plans for more in the future.

Lighthouses have helped guide sailors and vessels safely into harbor for centuries. Now, let our lighthouses guide your travels! The five-story Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse is now privately owned by Phil Carlucci, but graciously maintained by the Manitowoc Sunrise Rotary. Each Independence Day and often throughout the summer, the Rotarians offer free lighthouse tours so the public can enjoy this lakeside beauty and learn more about the lighthouse’s history. The Rawley Point Lighthouse, still owned and operated by the Coast Guard, is another must-see lighthouse located in Point Beach State Forest. Though one typically envisions trips to a lighthouse in the summer, even in the winter months, a brisk walk out to these lighthouses is the perfect way to catch beautiful ice crystals and stunning sunrises. You can also experience the lake by taking a oneof-a-kind cruise across Lake Michigan aboard the S.S. Badger Car Ferry. Sailing from May 18 through October 9, in 2023, the S.S. Badger celebrates her 70th anniversary. The 410-foot S.S. Badger is one of the last coal-fired steam engine car ferries. In 2016, she became a National Historic Landmark. With daily sailings, there are so many opportunities to sail between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan! Three times a season, you can even sail up and down our coastline. Once you step aboard, you, too, will be shouting “Big Ship, More Fun!” Even if you don’t set foot aboard, you’ll hear her horn announcing her arrival and departure every day during the sailing season.

Memorial Day Parades

The City of Two Rivers, in cooperation with the Robert E. Burns post 165 of The American Legion, observes Memorial Day with a parade. The City of Manitowoc also holds a Memorial Day parade that concludes with a ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial.

HFM Froedtert Maritime Marathon

A Boston Marathon qualifier, the Maritime Marathon is Wisconsin’s premier east coast marathon that winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline between Manitowoc and Two Rivers.

Garden Faire Extraordinaire

In Manitowoc’s Washington Park, the annual Garden Faire Extraordinaire celebrates the outdoors and features annuals, perennials, herbs, yard and garden art, crafts, food and music.

Maritime Bay Bike Classic

Part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland bike series, the largest competitive road cycling series in the United States, the Maritime Bay Bike Classic brings hundreds of cyclists to the heart of downtown. Manitowoc celebrates Independence Day in a big way! Kicking the festivities off with a parade, the day is packed with music, kids activities, food trucks and drinks, all leading up to the big Festival Foods fireworks show. SubFest at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and the Salmon Derby occurs in conjunction, making it one of the largest celebrations in downtown Manitowoc!

This Two Rivers celebration is loaded with fun for the whole family! There’s free live music, games for kids, bucket raffles, a Susie Q smelt fry, brats, cheese curds and more!

Lakeshore Balloon Glow

An annual family-friendly event along Manitowoc’s riverfront, Lakeshore Balloon Glow features glowing hot air balloons, a kid zone, delicious food trucks and cold drinks, a waterski show, fireworks and more!

Sputnikfest

One of the wackiest festivals in Wisconsin, Sputnikfest celebrates the chunk of Sputnik that crashed into 8th Street in Manitowoc. On the second Saturday in September, grab your space suit and land at the Rahr-West Art Museum for an out-of-this-world event!

Happening in conjunction with Sputnikfest, the Lakeshore Artists Guild brings art to the streets! From projects at Sputnikfest to commUNITY murals, there are many ways for the whole family to get involved.

From the first weekend in May through the last weekend in October, the Downtown Manitowoc Farmers’ Market features seasonal produce, prepared foods, artisan crafts and homemade goods along the riverfront each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Two Rivers Farmers’ & Craft Market

This weekly open air market in Central Park features fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, flowers, quality crafts and more on Thursday evenings. Many markets also include concerts, food and beverage tents.

Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet

In mid-September, the 59th Annual Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet descends upon the Manitowoc County Expo Center grounds for a jam-packed week of all things Studebakers!

Ethnic Fest

A celebration of diversity, Two Rivers Ethnic Fest showcases cultures from around the world in music, dance, food, blocks of craft vendors and more.

Kite Fest

Windigo Fest

Wisconsin’s largest Halloween festival, Windigo Fest, is a festival for folklore freaks and those who love all things Halloween! Happening the first weekend in October, Windigo Fest features live music, a variety of entertainment, costume contests and so much more.

Especially when the temperatures rise and the patios open up, it’s not too hard to find live music in Manitowoc. At venues like The Wharf Manitowoc, restaurants like The Fat Seagull and breweries like Sabbatical Brewing Co., live music can be heard almost every day of the week. Summer concert series’ include Tuesday Tunes in Manitowoc’s Washington Park and Two Rivers’ Concerts in the Park.

Wayzgoose Conference

Wayzgoose is Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum’s annual conference where print and design experts worldwide gather to share their knowledge with type, graphic design and letterpress enthusiasts.

Lakeshore Holiday Parade

Manitowoc’s annual Lakeshore Holiday Parade kicks off the holiday season the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Floats, characters, marching bands, dance troupes and even Santa and Mrs. Clause make their way through downtown to wow the crowds at this well renowned event.

Christmas in the Mansion

An annual exhibit at the Rahr-West Art Museum, Christmas in the Mansion is a season-long festive exhibit. The entire historic Vilas-Rahr mansion is decorated by a group of volunteers in a variety of themes.

Evergleams on Eighth

Celebrating Manitowoc’s aluminum tree history, Evergleams on Eighth brings collected, vintage trees back into the city where they were first produced. Visitors and residents can view the Evergleams in storefronts of downtown Manitowoc businesses or take a trolley or walking tour each December.

Lights in Lincoln Park

This family-friendly drive through light show is a bright way to celebrate holiday wonder! Light displays feature all kinds of animals, with funding supporting the Manitowoc Lincoln Park Zoo

Two Rivers Christmas Parade

This annual Christmas parade in Two Rivers kicks off the holiday season with floats, lights and an appearance by Santa! The parade is the Saturday after Thanksgiving and gets everyone in the festive spirit.

TWO RIVERS Downtown

Downtown Two Rivers has a traditional downtown design in that Washington Street serves as “main street” and the area is both walkable and drivable, with plenty of parking. Downtown Two Rivers offers ease of accessibility and a sense of freedom from the hustle and bustle. Once downtown, there is an opportunity to shop at the City’s quintessential Schroeder’s Department Store and Marketplace that has been family owned and operated for over 100 years. Up and down Washington Street, there are more shops to find souvenirs, gifts and trinkets, like GJ’s Salon N Spa. Steps from these stores and in the heart of downtown is Central Park. The park hosts live music, festivals and activities throughout the year. This year brings many exciting renovations, including enhancing the stage, adding a water feature and an ice skating ribbon for winter enjoyment. These additions and improvements will provide year-round fun.

There are many options in downtown for dining, refreshments and entertainment. Since Two Rivers is home to the ice cream sundae, devouring one while you visit the historic Washington House should be on your list.

In recent years, Manitowoc’s downtown has experienced a resurgence. Now, downtown is a thriving destination with live music, robust public arts, an array of craft breweries, beautiful views and a riverfront ripe for outdoor recreation. If you haven’t visited Manitowoc in years, you need to add it to your travel list. It doesn’t matter the season, there’s something for you to discover year-round.

Just walking through the charming streets, you’ll be enamored by the bright murals, painted utility boxes and sculptures, like Shipbuilder the Badger who welcomes the S.S. Badger to port every day during the sailing season. You can even learn more about each piece of public art by following the Rahr-West Art Museum’s public arts app while you stroll.

One of the most iconic downtown venues is the Capitol Civic Centre – the jewel of the lakeshore. A 1,000 seat community performing arts center, the Capitol holds many local and national performances each and every year. Be sure to check out the schedule to add a musical, play or symphony show to your itinerary.

Another classic, Beerntsen’s Confectionary, has been a must-visit for decades. When you step into this old-fashioned candy parlor, you’ll feel as though you have stepped back in time. The vintage, rich wood, light fixtures and cases set the scene. Known for their chocolate molding creations, delicious lunches and creative listing of sundaes, you’ll be sure to leave with a treat no matter the time of day. If outdoor activities are your thing, kayak down the Manitowoc River! Come wintertime, downtown is the place to ice skate while sipping hot cocoas, cozy up in an igloo while watching the freezing riverfront, pose in front of the new 30-foot holiday tree or gaze at the vintage Evergleams in storefronts.

A littlemore about Manitowoc & Two Rivers

Manitowoc was a major shipbuilding port city and in the 1920s, every business along the Manitowoc River was either a shipbuilding company, dock or maritime contractor.

Two Rivers was originally called “Neshotah” meaning “twin rivers” because of its harbor where the Mishicot and Neshota rivers come together.

Manitowoc’s malting history dates back to 1847 when William Rahr built the Manitowoc Malting Plant downtown. This was later sold to Anheuser-Busch and is now owned and operated by Briess Malt & Ingredients Co.

Raise a Glass

With a rich brewing history and the strong presence of Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. still today, it is no surprise the ManitowocTwo Rivers brew scene grows each and every year.

Courthouse Pub was the first brewpub to make its mark in Manitowoc. In a room off the pub area or from the sidewalk, you’re able to see where they consistently brew in house. Czech Yo’ Self is a crisp, clean Czech Pilsner that is a house favorite.

PetSkull Brewing, now located in Manitowoc’s River Point District, has continued to grow in recent years. Offering a total of 20 beers on tap, including their house favorite Schnitzky and Ode to the Kings, a pale beer made in honor of Manitowoc’s Kingsbury, there is always something new to try. Whether you prefer to enjoy a brew in the cozy taproom or outdoor on the patio, PetSkull is the perfect place to gather. In addition to great brews, PetSkull offers a rotating menu of shareable party food, live music and events throughout the year.

With a spacious taproom and outdoor dog friendly beer garden, Sabbatical Brewing Co. is another must-visit brewery. Always encouraging you to “Break for Beer,” their beer list is constantly rotating. Featuring a plethora of hazy IPAs and more, grab a friend and head over to Sabbatical. They regularly host food trucks on-site, feature

live music and show local sports games. In addition, they host free weekly trivia in the taproom.

Craft Creek Brewing, Manitowoc’s most recent downtown micro-brewery, offers a wide variety of beers. Their rotating tap list includes favorites like the Witty Squirrel and brews that nod to Manitowoc’s industry and history, like the Coal Steamer. From regular trivia to fun events, Craft Creek is a spot to add to your list!

Cool City Brewing Company is the newest brewery to hit the scene in Two Rivers, opening in late 2022. In addition to their brews, Cool City Brewing has a full-service restaurant that features shareable food flights and appetizers.

Whether you’re looking to spend an afternoon brewery hopping or the perfect spot to enjoy a date night, our breweries can’t be missed!

For wine lovers, Waterfront Wine Bar is a must-visit. Located directly on the Manitowoc riverfront, visitors can enjoy a glass of wine on the outdoor patio on the boardwalk or in the calm and cozy interior. In addition to the extensive by the glass wine selection, the Wine Bar offers two self-dispensing wine machines and one self-dispensing liquor machine where you can sample a pour or enjoy a glass. In addition to the array of wines, Waterfront Wine Bar offers a full bar and creative, seasonal cocktail menu. The food menu features charcuterie boards, sandwiches and entrees. You can even get behind the bar at their monthly cocktail classes!

Possibly nowhere else can you experience a “creepeasy” like The Shrunken Head. One of the most unique watering holes in Wisconsin, The Shrunken Head is located in Dead by Dawn’s Dead & Breakfast in downtown Manitowoc. A reservation-only establishment, you’ll want to book early to ensure you can sample their unique list of libations including the Poison Apple, Bloody Mammia and Black Magic. For the trivia buffs, you won’t want to miss their Friday trivia!

If you’re looking for a spot to unleash your competitive side, stop by Tapped on the Lakeshore. In addition to sampling the menu of over 20 craft beers on tap, you can try your hand at axe throwing on their two ranges. Tapped has a variety of other games, including shuffleboard, corn hole and hammershalgen.

Unleash Your Inner Foodie

THE WHARF MANITOWOC

Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect Wisconsin fish fry, supper club experience or casual bite, Manitowoc and Two Rivers have you covered! If a casual bite is what you’re after, there are no shortage of establishments that’ll fit the bill.

The Fat Seagull, open seven days a week, is the perfect spot to watch the game, grab a brew and devour a perch sandwich. Their Friday fish fry and in-house only lobster bisque can’t be beat. However, you don’t have to wait until Friday to get your fish in this area! Tower Tavern is one of the local establishments that serves up fish fry every day of the week! Located along the riverfront, The Wharf Manitowoc serves up a casual menu of burgers and sandwiches, tacos, salads and pizza, with Wisconsin flair.

Unique meals aren’t hard to find along the lakeshore. Ryan’s on York, a Manitowoc gastropub, features a flavorful menu of smash burgers, San Fran and Korean noodle bowls, gyros and other naan handhelds and loaded hand-cut fries. At BRIX, there’s a wide menu of

creative, locally-sourced burgers and the only bacon-wrapped cheese curds in the region.

Cool City Brewing, Two Rivers’ newest restaurant and brewery, features shareable plates and food flights for a tasting experience. It also has a modern twist on the all-important Two Rivers ice cream sundae.

When it comes to finer dining, Courthouse Pub is the ticket. Located across the street from Manitowoc’s beautiful courthouse, there are nods to “court” from the beginning to the end of your dining experience. Their menu is filled with Pub staples, like their award-winning cheese curds with raspberry balsamic dipping sauce and chicken chili. Frequent seasonal changes keep visitors and locals alike coming back for more. Holla, a farm-to-table restaurant, showcases local, seasonal ingredients in a menu that changes each week. They always feature a specialty wood-fired pizza, as well as fresh appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts.

For a classic Wisconsin supper club feel, head to the newly renovated Elbow Room, Harborside Restaurant, and Green Street Food and Spirits. The Elbow Room offers classic supper club entrees including broasted chicken, prime rib on Saturdays and fresh lake perch as well as a large selection of after dinner ice cream drinks. Harborside is known for their martini list and nightly specials, like their Saturday night prime rib. Green Street has refreshing Wisconsin Old Fashioneds, Friday lake perch and delicious homemade soups.

Here, you can find 1,500 acres of preserved habitat and an education center. This is a great option for birders and families. Moving towards the shore of Lake Michigan, the Mariners Trail offers 13 miles between Manitowoc and Two Rivers and gorgeous views year-round. Bike, hike, skate or walk this popular trail. Along the way you can expect groomed gardens, sculptures, beaches and bathrooms.

Meadow Links Golf Course is a good option for a par 70 course with minimal water hazards. Just outside the city is Seven Lakes Golf & Dining, a par-three course with a dining option open every night of the week. Groups ranging from two to ten people race against the clock in one of five themed rooms to escape before time is up! Soak up the sun at one of Manitowoc’s goto summer spots, the Manitowoc Family Aquatic Center and Mini Golf. You can beat the summer heat with water slides, diving boards, sand play area, lazy river and concession stand. For cooler days, hit up the warming pool or 18-hole mini golf course.

In addition to the museums that celebrate Manitowoc and Two Rivers’ rich maritime histories, these cities also feature museums that showcase the arts and overall history of the region and beyond.

Inside the historic Rahr-Vilas mansion, the Rahr-West Art Museum boasts a collection of works by Georgia O’Keefe, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and more.

The museum features a series of annual exhibits, like the Art of Table Settings and Christmas in the Mansion, as well as unique exhibits each year. With so many exhibits in rotation, the Rahr-West is a perfect stop year-round. Because it’s a city-owned facility, admission is free. The Rahr-West is also the home to Wisconsin’s wackiest festival! The second weekend of September is Sputnikfest, a celebration of all things sci-fi and space to commemorate the chunk of Sputnik that once crash-landed on 8th Street in front of the museum.

At the Hamilton Wood Type Museum, the world’s largest collection of type, you can tour the equipment, take part in a class and even print from the museum’s vast collection. Their rotating gallery exhibits provide an in-depth history about America’s typography and printing.

For the history buffs in your family, add a visit to the Manitowoc County Historical Society to experience history come to life. Featuring a collection of over 25 historic Manitowoc County buildings, the MCHS’ 60-acre Pinecrest Historical Village is home to many annual events, workshops and series to learn about the history of the Manitowoc area hands-on.

In the ManitowocTwo Rivers area, there is no shortage of ways to learn about, experience and eat the agricultural riches of our region.

To immerse yourself in all things agriculture, plan to stop at the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center. In this massive red barn just off I-43, you can visit the birthing barn for a chance to witness a calf’s birth or walk through the 10,000 square feet of interactive, educational exhibits that showcase the origins of our food, modern technology that keeps food safe and more. These experiences are perfect for the whole family and groups! If you get hungry, you can stop into the Wisconsin Café onsite to enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast or lunch with locally-sourced ingredients.

There are so many ways to experience our agriculture industry hands-on. At LondonDairy Alpaca Ranch in Two Rivers, you can schedule tours to meet the alpacas year-round. Tours include interacting and feeding the animals, posing for photos and selfies and learning more about the alpacas and their unique fibers. Events, like Wine with the Alpacas, are also hosted onsite throughout the year. Visitors can conclude a trip out to the ranch by shopping alpaca goods and South American wines at their store.

At Wilfert Farms, a 120-acre family farm that began in 1877, you can pick up farm fresh produce to enjoy during your stay. The produce is so abundant that Wilfert Farms provides almost two percent of the processed carrot tonnage in the state of Wisconsin. If the season is right, head out for u-pick strawberries or pumpkins.

For those seeking their first squeaky cheese curd, a trip to Pine River Dairy is a must! In its sixth generation of dairy manufacturers, Pine River Dairy boasts an impressive butter factory and store with over 250 varieties of cheese. They even offer 25 cent scoop ice cream cones! Manitowoc is home to the Cedar Crest Ice Cream Plant and Parlor. A landmark destination, Bernice the “Big Cow” greets guests from the front lawn. Serving hand-dipped, factory-fresh ice cream and sundaes, shakes and malts, the parlor is a must-visit from March through October. With 36 flavors to choose from, you’ll be sure to find your favorite. Cedar Crest ice cream can be found across the region, at Farm Wisconsin, PK’s Beans N Cream and Scream ‘N Conuts.
