SPIRIT OF THE RIVERS Photo: Bill Chizek

A BIT OF HISTORY Manitowoc, Home of the Great Spirit, can date the origins of its name back to 1822. The Native Americans referred to the area as “Manidoowaak,” meaning dwelling of the spirit, because of its natural beauty. From the shores of Lake Michigan to the abundant gardens along our trails and riverfront, the beauty of the Manitowoc area lives on. Two Rivers was originally called “Neshotah” by the Potawatomi and Menominee people. It means “twin” referring to the two rivers, now named

16

the East and West Twin Rivers. Two Rivers is distinct because of its relationship with the rivers and the lake. These waters have supported a significant commercial fishing presence for the local economy. The Susie-Q Fish Company opened in 1980 as a result of this fishing heritage. The market started with two smokehouses and later added four more. Chubs, salmon, trout, whitefish, herring and carp are all smoked at Susie-Q and can be found across the Midwest.

In many ways, Manitowoc and Two Rivers are known for and defined by the waters. Wisconsin’s Maritime Capital, Manitowoc boasts a rich shipbuilding history, which remains a key piece of the city’s persona today. A historic port city since the 1800s, Manitowoc has both built and welcomed steamships and schooners along our shores for generations. In the 1920s, every business along the Manitowoc River was a shipbuilding company, dock or maritime contractor. Manitowoc remains a working port, and companies

like Burger Boat continue to produce custom yachts over 150 years later.

PINECREST HISTORICAL VILLAGE

Under the waves of Lake Michigan, some of these vessels still lie. In 2021, the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary was designated to protect and celebrate this maritime history. With 36 known, protected historic shipwreck sites up and down the shores of Lake Michigan, and another potential 60 yet to be discovered, Manitowoc and Two Rivers are the perfect places to learn firsthand about the vessels that played a central role in our nation’s history. This high concentration of shipwrecks have dubbed these cities part of the Lake Michigan Triangle, the Bermuda Triangle of the Great Lakes. You can see some of the wrecks on a clear, calm day. At Point Beach State Forest, part of the sanctuary, there are 12 identified shipwrecks around Rawley Point. A new exhibit at the Nature Center highlights the famous shipwrecks in the area. History also remains alive through the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. The museum features extensive exhibits that share the history of Manitowoc on Lake Michigan, as well as the maritime history of the entire state. In late 2022, Manitowoc was designated an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service because of the contributions made by Manitowoc’s businesses and citizens during the war. Part of those efforts include submarine

building. The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company was recognized by the navy as one of the best in the country and was asked to turn out submarines fit for battle even though they had never made one before. In total, Manitowoc made 28 submarines to support the war effort. Other companies that were involved in wartime production include Aluminum Goods Manufacturing, Burger Boat, Lakeside Packaging, Heresite Protective Coatings and others. Citizens supported the effort through war bonds. Manitowoc’s WWII heritage can still be explored today at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and through annual events, like Subfest. While at the museum, you can step back in time as you board, tour and even sleep aboard the docked USS Cobia submarine, which was active in WWII. To learn more about and interact with the history of the Manitowoc area, visit the Manitowoc County Historical Society, a living history museum. The museum consists of 60 acres featuring a welcome center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village, a collection of over 25 historic buildings and furnishings from Manitowoc County’s earliest settlers. Step back in time as you physically step into these buildings and see what houses, stores and blacksmiths were like over 100 years ago.

Though one typically envisions trips to a lighthouse in the summer, even in the winter months, a brisk walk out to these lighthouses is the perfect way to catch beautiful ice crystals and stunning sunrises. You can also experience the lake by taking a one-of-a-kind cruise across Lake Michigan aboard the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan Car Ferry. Sailing from mid-May through mid-October each year, the S.S. Badger celebrated her big 70th anniversary in 2023. The 410foot S.S. Badger is one of the last steam engine car ferries. In 2016, she became a National Historic Landmark. With daily sailings, there are so many opportunities to sail between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan. Three times a season, you can even sail up and down our coastline during their Shoreline Cruises. Once you step aboard, you, too, will be shouting “Big Ship, More Fun!” Even if you don’t set foot aboard, you’ll hear her horn announcing her arrival and departure every day during the sailing season.

Nearby, stretching along the shores of Lake Michigan between Manitowoc and Two Rivers, is seven miles of Mariners Trail. With gorgeous views all yearround, biking, hiking, skating or walking this popular trail is a must. Along the way you can expect groomed gardens, sculptures, beaches, bathrooms and free parking. We are fortunate enough to have a segment of the Ice Age Trail – a historic, statewide 1,000-mile footpath carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago. Our favorite locations to hike this trail include Lower Henry Schuette Park, Woodland Dunes and Point Beach State Forest. The latter section extends 9.5 miles, though there is even more to explore at the state forest. Point Beach

MARINERS TRAIL

State Forest, situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, is approximately 3,000 acres filled with 129 campsites, two rustic cabins, miles of hiking and ski trails, a limestone bike trail, equestrian trail, picnic area, miles of sandy beachfront, swimming, hunting and trapping and of course the Rawley Point Lighthouse. Vehicle admission is required to access the forest. Manitowoc’s Camp Vits is a hidden gem. Arguably one of the most beautiful trails, this is a must-visit every season of the year. Start out at Vetter Trailhead and enjoy the shade of large trees, hilly terrain and bridges. You can bike in the summer, enjoy beautiful orange and red fallen leaves cast across the trail in the fall and snowshoe in the winter.

Disc golf is also a great way to spend a day in the area. Silver Creek Park has a nationally ranked 36-hole hilly course with open prairies, wooded area and lookouts to Lake Michigan. When the temperatures drop in winter, this park offers sledding hills and fat tire bike and snowshoe trails. Picnic Hill Natural Area in Two Rivers includes a 9-hole disc golf course. The course can be accessed by walking up the hill from the Walsh Field Parking Lot. Whether you’re competitive, just learning or hoping to enjoy a laid-back weekend round with friends, you can find a golf course that fits your needs. Meadow Links Golf Course is a good option for a par 70 course with minimal water hazards. Just outside the city is Seven Lakes Golf & Dining, a par-three course with a dining option open every night of the week. The Golf Course at Branch River offers a beautiful course and an indoor simulator so you can stay on your game all year-round. Autumn Ridge Golf Course, hilly and well-groomed, is a favorite for those looking for a challenge. In the winter, ice skate in downtown Two Rivers’ Central Park. Their synthetic ice skating loops makes it possible to skate in any temperature. Ice skate rentals are available or you can bring your own. SILVER CREEK PARK
