Of the four islands that comprise the Maltese archipelago, only Malta, Gozo, and Comino are inhabited; Filfla is not. The islands are located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.
Malta, the largest island in the archipelago, is located 93 kilometres south of Sicily and 288 kilometres north of Africa. Gibraltar is 1,826 kilometres to the west while Beirut is 1,928 km to the east.
As of December 2024, there were 574,250 people living on the 316 square kilometre islands (Malta 246, Gozo 67, and Comino 2.7).
Gozo
Despite being smaller, Gozo is very different from its sister island, Malta. The island feels more rustic and agrarian.
The countryside is more lush and breathtaking. Gozitan landscapes are characterised by steep slopes along the shore, attractive bays and jagged cliffs with flat tops.
Gozo is 43 kilometres in circumference, 14.5 kilometres long and 7.2 kilometres wide.
Victoria, the island’s capital, is renowned for its citadel. Mgarr is Gozo’s principal port.
Filfla lies 4.6 kilometres south of Malta and covers an area of 0.06 square kilometres
Comino Comino (right) is the smallest populated island in the archipelago.
Traffic and other noisy activities don’t disturb the tranquilly in this charming little sanctuary.
The island is the perfect place for most water sports, especially snorkelling, because of its many coves and the clear waters of the world famous Blue Lagoon.
Malta
The island of Malta is 27 kilometres long from south-east to north-west and 14.5 kilometres wide on an east-west axis. Terraced fields are found on the slopes of Malta’s low hills. The island is devoid of mountains and rivers.
Rocky coves, harbours, bays, creeks, and occasionally sandy beaches can be found throughout Malta’s coastline. The island’s coastline is 137 kilometres long.
The Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour encircle Valletta, the fourth-smallest capital in Europe, which is perched on Mount Sceberras.
General information
Accommodation — The islands provide a variety of lodging options, including hotels, guest houses, hostels, self-catering farmhouses, villas and flats; there is just one tourist village. All properties must show the certificate attesting to their category, which is determined by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) using generally agreed standards.
At the moment, the MTA does not have a specific category for boutique hotels — those with 30 rooms or fewer.

Malta Air is a low-cost carrier that was established in June 2019. It is a partnership between Ireland’s Ryanair and the Maltese government. It serves 57 European routes with a fleet of Boeing B-737-800s and B-737 MAX 200s.
Wizz Air Malta and Lauda Europe are two additional carriers registered in Malta, but only WAM operates scheduled flights to the islands.

Baby requisites — Pharmacies and supermarkets carry all the well-known brands of milk formulae, nappies, medicines and other baby supplies.
Beaches — Sandy beaches can be found all around Malta, but Mellieha Bay, Gnejna Bay, Golden Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha, Paradise Bay and the perched beach in Qawra are the most well-known. St George’s Bay is the only sandy beach in the Sliema-St Julian area.

On Comino, there are two sandy beaches: Sta Marija Bay and St Niklaw Bay.
Gozo’s Ramla Bay is well-known for its breathtaking red sand.
Rock bathing is possible at most other beaches. (See Beaches on the islands below.)
Charge and credit cards — Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept the more popular credit, charge and prepaid debit cards, including those from online banks. Contactless payments are now widely accepted throughout the islands.
If the sale is less than a specific amount, some shops may not accept ‘plastic’, while others might impose a commission if a credit or charge card is used for payment. Chemists — There are chemists in all towns and villages; these are open during normal shopping hours.
On Sundays, chemists open on a roster basis from 09:00 to 12:30 in Malta and from 07:30 to 11:00 in Gozo. Check Sunday newspapers or go to www.pharmacy.mt/roster. Climate — Malta has a typical Mediterranean climate, which is influenced by the sea. Only occasional cold snaps caused by northerly and north-easterly winds from central Europe interrupt the balmy winters.
Summers are hot, dry and sunny. Sea breezes tend to keep daytime temperatures moderate, scorching African winds can provide uncomfortably high temperatures in the spring and autumn. Due to Malta’s short distance from the African coast, the air there is typically drier. This is the scirocco, which also affects Greece and Italy. Compared to southern Italy, the summer dry season lasts longer and there is less annual rainfall. With an average of five to six hours of sunshine each day in mid-winter and more than 12 hours in the summer, the islands enjoy an extremely sunny climate. Cuisine — The islands’ cuisine is heavily influenced by Italian cooking, but you can also find continental dishes in most restaurants.
Local specialities include stewed rabbit, the national dish; bragjoli (beef olives); timpana (baked macaroni) and torta tal-lampuki (dorado pie).

Currency — The unit of currency is the euro, that Malta adopted on 1 January 2008. The 100-, 200- and 500-euro notes are rarely used.
Driving — As in many Commonwealth countries, driving in Malta is on the left. There is a speed limit of 80kph (50mph) on highways and 50kph (30mph) in urban areas, although actual limits are usually lower, normally between 60kph (37mph) and 70kph (44mph).
Electricity — The electrical supply is 240 volts, single phase, 50 cycles. The 13-ampere, three-pin rectangular sockets are used in Malta.
Entry requirements — Malta complies with the rules of the Schengen Convention, having joined on 21 December 2007. Visit Identity Malta’s website at www.identita.gov. mt/central-visa-unit-main-page for information on entering Malta from outside the EU
On 12 October 2025 the European Union (EU) began rolling out the Entry/ Exit System (EES), with full implementation by April 2026. This new digital border management tool replaces traditional passport stamping with biometric records for non-EU/Schengen nationals.
Furthermore, starting at the end of 2026, citizens of about 60 countries that currently do not require a visa will need to obtain travel authorisation before they may enter most European countries, including Malta.
The ¢7 pass, which is good for three years and will be called the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), will be needed to enter of Europe. Visit www.travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias for additional information about ETIAS.
Cirkewwas is the principal port in Gozo, and where all ferries dock
Ferries — The Gozo Channel Company operates daily Ro-Ro services from Cirkewwa in Malta to Mgarr in Gozo. For schedules, visit www.gozochannel.com/ferry/ schedule.
Gozo Fast Ferries operates a high-speed catamaran service between Lascaris Wharf Terminal in Valletta’s Grand Harbour and Gozo’s Mgarr terminal. For schedules, go to www.gozohighspeed.com.
The Comino Ferries Co-Op (www.cominoferries.com) operates a passenger-only shuttle from Cirkewwa to the Blue Lagoon in Comino.
Valletta Ferry Services (www.vallettaferryservices.com) runs a passenger-only ferry from Sliema to Valletta and from Valletta to Vittoriosa.
Virtu Ferries (www.virtuferries. com) operates a high speed, passenger and vehicle catamaran service between Malta and Pozzallo, in southern Sicily.
Ragusa Xpress (www.ragusaxpress.com)also operates a regular catamaran service between Malta and Marina di Ragusa in southern Sicily.

Health — Travellers do not require certificates of vaccination or inoculation to enter the country. However, cholera vaccination certificates are required if arriving from an infected area. Yellow fever immunisation is needed for travellers arriving within six days of leaving an infected area.
Language — Maltese and English are the official languages of Malta. Maltese is a Semitic language similar to Levantine Arabic and written in the Roman script; the alphabet comprises 30 characters — 24 consonants and six vowels, including six letters with diacritic marks or digraphs.
Religion — The majority of Maltese are Roman Catholic. There are also small communities of most other denominations on the islands.
Restaurants — There are more than 3,500 eateries on the islands. The majority are modest, but there are also some fine restaurants that serve ethnic, continental and fad cuisines.
In 2025 43 restaurants were recognised by Michelin Guide for the excellence of their cuisine.

• 31 restaurants were “selected,” including three newly selected restaurants Time — Malta is on Central European Time, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in winter and two hours from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October.
Tipping — Taxi drivers do not expect a tip, but 10 per cent of the fare is customary; restaurants, unless a service charge has been added to the bill, between 10 and 15 per cent. Car park attendants expect to be tipped; the amount given is at one’s discretion. Water — Although it may taste unpleasant and is hard, tap water is safe to drink.

Boutique hotel — although there is no clear definition of what a boutique hotel is, it is generally accepted that it should have no more than 30 rooms, be independent, or be a part of a chain that specialises in such accommodations. It should be centrally located, elegantly furnished and provide each visitor with a unique experience.
Guest house — a guest house must be in a building or part of a building with an independent entrance.
Rooms must have appropriate furniture and furnishings; however, sanitary facilities must be provided in the ratio of at least one bath/shower for every 10 persons or one bath/shower per floor.
Hostel — means any building in which accommodation, ancillary services and amenities of a basic standard are provided for the public by a common management.
Hotel — a hotel means any building or interconnected buildings in which accommodation, ancillary services and amenities are provided for the public by professional management.
Accommodation is in rooms and/or suites and may also include self-catering units. Tourist village — a tourist village must firstly meet the main definition of a hotel.
A tourist village must be located within an extensive and single land area and designed in such a way so as not to exceed the height of a three-storey building. Tourist village accommodation must be provided in self-catering units or a mix of hotel type rooms.
Moreover, it must have a common entrance and reception, and provide opportunities for sports, recreation and other outdoor activities. (There is only one tourist village on the islands.)
ClassifiCation Criteria
Boutique hotels are not classified as a separate category by the Malta Tourism Authority. In the directory they are listed under this grouping with their MTA classification also included.
Guest houses and hostels are classified as ‘comfort’ — denoting the highest grade — and ‘standard’, the lowest grade. Hotels are classified from five to two star.
Five star — fully air-conditioned accommodation; all rooms must have a private bath and shower, a telephone and TV set; 24-hour room service; a bar, restaurant and a coffee shop; a lounge area; a swimming pool and sports facilities; the front office must be manned 24-hours; it must also offer a laundry, ironing and dry-cleaning service and have shops and a hairdresser.
Four star — fully air-conditioned accommodation; all rooms must have a private bath or shower, an ‘internal or external’ telephone and radio; room service
from breakfast to midnight; a bar, a restaurant and a lounge; a swimming pool or a private beach; the front office must be manned 24-hours; it must also offer a laundry, pressing and dry-cleaning service and have shops and a hairdresser.
Three star — all rooms must have a private bath or shower and an ‘internal or external’ telephone; a bar, a restaurant and a lounge; the front office must be manned on a 24-hour basis; it must also offer a laundry, pressing and dry-cleaning.
Two star — all rooms must have a bath or shower; moreover, all rooms must have a wash-hand basin and a mirror plus an inter-telephone or similar facility; breakfast facilities must be available; the front office must be manned during the day and at night a porter service must be available.
Tourist villages are classified as two, three or four star.
These are essentially hotels with extensive grounds, and their accommodation is traditionally provided in bungalows.
environmental CertifiCation
Three globally acknowledged programmes that guarantee the socio-economic, cultural and environmental sustainability of hotels and other tourist accommodations on the islands have been endorsed by the Malta Tourism Authority since the beginning of 2024.
The EU Ecolabel guarantees that certified accommodation has optimised environmental and waste management, and reduced energy consumption, water consumption, transport emissions and food waste.
By obtaining Green Key certification, hoteliers attest to their businesses’ compliance with the Foundation for Environmental Education’s (FEE) standards.
A tourist product or service that has been certified by the Global Sustainable Tourist Council (GSTC) satisfies the strictest social and environmental requirements available.
Certified hotels may exhibit the appropriate logo.
miChelin reCoGnition
The Michelin Key, launched in 2024, is an award system that recognises exceptional hotels, similar to how Michelin stars honour outstanding restaurants. Although launched in 2024, it was not until 8 October 2025 that selected hotels were revealed worldwide.
Michelin Keys were awarded to six hotels in Malta in 2025. Acknowledged hotels are identified by the Michelin Key symbol in the directory.
Michelin star restaurants are establishments recognised by France’s Michelin Guide for exceptional culinary excellence. The Michelin star system was introduced in 1926.
Seven restaurants in Malta were awarded Michelin stars in 2025, some are in hotels. In the directory, starred establishments are identified by the Michelin star symbol.
