Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (State Art Gallery Karlsruhe)

Karlsruhe‘s State Art Gallery is not only one of Germany‘s oldest museum buildings, but also houses one of its most distinguished art collections, boasting works by Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Cézanne and Degas as well as Ernst and Richter, amongst many others. Due to renovations starting in autumn of 2021, the museum will be closed to the public. However, its manifold digital offers continue to grant entertaining glimpses behind the scenes. From September 2022, selected highlights of the collection will once again be presented to the public within the exhibition spaces of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media.

ZKM | Center for Art and Media

The ZKM in Karlsruhe unites all media and artistic genres: themed exhibitions include both spatial and temporal artworks. In addition to showcasing art, the ZKM has taken it on itself to create the conditions that foster the creation of art. Consequently, the ZKM houses the Hertz-Lab, where scientific research, development and production are carried out. And it is precisely the production activities that distinguish the ZKM from other institutions. Hence, more than a museum it is a centre, a meeting place and a future laboratory.

In addition to temporary exhibitions, the Municipal Gallery exhibits above all works by local Karlsruhe and regional painters as well as European printed graphics from the 15th to the 19th century, Japanese woodblock printing from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as works from the Garnatz collection.

Creative park „Alter Schlachthof“ (Old slaughterhouse)

As well as the classical cultural facilities, for a few years now young creatives have been mixing things up a bit at the Creative centre „Alter Schlachthof“. Only the unusual names like „Alte Hackerei“ (Meat chopping) or „Fettschmelze“ (Fat rendering) hark back to the earlier use of the premises, which was finally shut down in 2006. In the impressive red brick buildings today you will find artists‘ collectives, studio communities, classical craftsmen, architecture offices, agencies for new media as well as the Karlsruhe film board. In the east of Karlsruhe a lively urban district with gastronomy and cultural establishments has sprung up through the co-operation of the many media workers and creative artists. Thus, the cultural centre TOLLHAUS offers a contemporary programme of comedy, dance, world music, jazz, festivals and open air events, whilst „Substage“ is considered to be one to the most established live music clubs for all kinds of rock music in Baden-Württemberg.

The cultural centre TOLLHAUS offers a high-quality cultural programme of music, dance, cabaret, circus and comedy, which changes almost daily. The programme is supplemented by festivals, open air events and in-house productions.
