Tucked along I-57 just an hour south of Chicago sits an outdoor playground ripe for adventure! Whether you’re interested in a lazy afternoon or a high-energy adrenaline rush, Kankakee County has something for everyone.

Kankakee River State Park

The 4,000-acre Kankakee River State Park is the perfect destination for a day trip or a campout under the stars. With over 10 miles of trails suitable for walking, biking or chasing little ones, you’re sure to find nature’s beauty at every turn. The park’s Nature Center can also be a pit stop to learn about native foliage and what furry friends you might find along the way.

Ready to explore on four legs? Reserve your horseback riding experience at the Kankakee River State Park Riding Stables. Your guide will lead your group through the lush timber, giving you the opportunity to sit back and relax during your trail ride. Rides are available seasonally by reservation only and make a perfect birthday party!

Cast your line in the bountiful waters of the Kankakee River. This Federal Clean Stream offers shoreline wading, boat or fly-fishing and is proud to be home to two state record walleye, as well as record-size rock bass, smallmouth bass, carp and goldeye. Largemouth bass, river pike, crappie, catfish and bluegill are plentiful. Consider chartering your fishing experience with Big River Fly-Fishing or Grab Your Fly Charter, or test your skill at the Kankakee River Fishing Derby held every July!

Kankakee River State Park Riding Stables

Prefer your time on the water to be a little more go-with-the-flow? Designated a National Water Trail in 2016, the meandering Kankakee is a kayaker’s paradise. Your float begins on the eastern border and treats passers-by to views of Kankakee County’s rich, rural landscape. Reed’s Canoe Trips offer trips ranging from 2- to 6- hours that are suitable for all skill levels and include drop off and pick up. Stop by the cash-only Aroma Park American Legion for a burger and tell them we sent you!

Adventure seekers can take the plunge at family-owned Haigh Quarry, a former limestone mining site turned scuba dive site in 1992. You’ll find the underwater attractions and diverse fish population makes this 12-acre spring-fed quarry an attractive Midwest destination to get your scuba fix. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, you’ll be glad you made the trip to Kankakee County!

Splish and splash at Kankakee Valley Park District’s Splash Valley Aquatic Center. Located across from River Road Sports Complex and adjacent park district campground, the splash park makes a perfect option for families visiting for a softball or baseball tournament. Kids of all ages can find something to keep them busy including three body slides, a zero-depth children’s play area and sand volleyball courts. There’s plenty of pool to cool off in the hot summer months and a fully stocked concession stand to give mom and dad the day off!

Spinning your wheels on your next trail ride? Your adventure awaits on the more than 25 miles of trails running throughout Kankakee County at the Kankakee River State Park, Bourbonnais Township Park District’s Perry Farm Park, or the Riverfront Trailways of Kankakee County starting at the Kankakee Valley Park District Campground.

For the more serious rider, take part in the Cobb Park Criterium in early summer or the Two Rivers Century Ride in August.

The story of Locavore Farm started in 2015 as the dream of husband-and-wife team, Chris and Rachael Jones. Farmer and Mrs. Jones relocated their family from the suburbs to embark on a farmture (farm adventure) that would eventually come to serve over 10,000 guests but got its start when a party of 100 gathered to dine on the land at their 110-ft. handcrafted table.

Since then, Locavore, meaning one whose diet consists primary of locally grown food, has evolved to be an agrarian destination that includes two locations with the addition of 30-acre farmstead Sumac Creek Farms. You’ll find the Locavore experience to be magical from the first turn down the long country lane, to the Mrs. Jones farm tour and accompanying bleating goats, to the new friends you’ll make under the stars of rural Kankakee County.

Slowing down has a whole new meaning when you experience their 4-hour signature event, Dine on the Land. This five-course outdoor retreat set on the open plains of rural Grant Park offers a farm-to-table menu that incorporates the bounty of the week’s harvest and invites guests to enjoy the company of friends, new and old. Oh, and don’t forget the campfire s’mores!

Looking for an overnight retreat away from the hustle and bustle? Book your stay at The Cottage, a remodeled 100-year-old farmhouse, where you’ll be invited to live off the land and offers the respite for your soul by way of gathering farm fresh eggs, fruits and veggies, and for the adventurous, farm chores. Glamping can also be an option for your Locavore experience where you’ll be treated to a beautifully designed tent for two.

Your littles can even enjoy their own version of Locavore at the annual Farm Day Camp Offering two sessions, this is a trip you’ll want to take as youths six to 16 are introduced to life on the farm. You’ll even be treated to a camperprepared feast to conclude their weeklong experience.

Kankakee County Fair and Exposition Center

The first county fair was held in 1856 in the current Riverview Historic District. The fair has been held every year since, except when a fire destroyed the grandstands in 1921, in 1933 during the Chicago World’s Fair and in 2020 because of the pandemic. Today the fair sits on 100 acres south of Kankakee and hosts a wide variety of events during the year in its 16,000-sq.-ft. Exposition Center.

Riverview Historic District

The Riverview Historic District sits on the scenic banks of the Kankakee River and contains custom-built, carefully-restored homes, including two early Prairie Style houses by Frank Lloyd Wright. Momence Railroad Depot Museum

This privately-owned 1890s depot was restored in 2001. The building served as a depot from 1890 to the 1950s, and served the Chicago, Indiana & Southern Railroad and the New York Central lines.
