There has never been a better time to sail away to the Isle of Wight... We’d like to invite you to join us this year, as we celebrate our number one attraction - the beautiful landscape that makes a visit to the Island so very special. We’re proud to say that it’s now 50 years since the Island was first designated an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. From cool coastal weekends to fabulous family holidays, sunny Spring breaks to warm Winter escapes, the Isle of Wight really does have a landscape for everyone, twelve months of the year. Crossing the Solent can take as little as ten minutes on the Hovercraft. Alternatively start your holiday on-board one of the car ferries with time to unwind and enjoy the view as you sail into one of our welcoming harbours.

Once on dry land, the Island has plenty to offer. Dive into our history and heritage, drift off in the sleepy coves, hit the golden beaches and race around our adventure parks. Feel the heat in our tropical gardens and explore our coastal paths. You’ll discover an impressive range of family attractions and outdoor activities, great theatres and live entertainment to make your short break or longer holiday a real Island adventure. Whether you’re planning a weekend away, or a fortnight’s holiday (or both!), within these pages you’ll find a taste of some of the things in store, and a wide range of holiday accommodation to suit all budgets and every taste.

Family fun Think of the perfect family holiday - think of the Isle of Wight.

There is nothing better than the simple pleasure of a day on one of our fine (and safe, and award winning) beaches.

05

www.visitisleofwight.co.uk

It’s the perfect place... the atmosphere is relaxed, there is room to breathe, and yet there is at the same time a huge variety of places to explore and enjoy, whatever your age, and whatever the weather.

There is nothing better than the simple pleasure of a day on one of our fine (and safe, and award winning) beaches. Here, you really are spoiled for choice: every beach has its own unique character and you might find yourself searching for dinosaur fossils, dipping into rock pools, lining up for a game of beach cricket, or simply sampling a delicious ice cream in between dips in the clean sea, and sunbathing. If you are looking for action, then you’ve come to the right place, too. The Island has theme parks, wildlife attractions, and history

- not to mention water sports, horse riding, paragliding, sea kayaking, cycling and walking along our network of wonderful and well marked footpaths. The Island welcomes children, of course, and you’ll find that our holiday parks and many hotels make a point of providing for families. Many of our pubs and restaurants provide children’s menus and play areas, and there is no lack of opportunities for children to let off steam and have some fun in safety at many Island attractions.

Dogs on Beaches The Isle of Wight welcomes dogs and the Island is a great place for dog walking. Between May and September, dogs are not permitted on a number of Island beaches. For clarification before you visit please visit www.iwight.com

06

www.visitisleofwight.co.uk

Chill Out Sail across the Solent and feel the Island difference...

07

www.visitisleofwight.co.uk

The living is easy here, and it won’t be long before you feel relaxed. The Island’s unique maritime landscape helps, of course. You are never far from the sight and sound of the sea, and our coastal paths and the fresh sea air are the perfect accompaniment to your holiday. It is the same pure clean air that has won over some very famous visitors over the years – including Lord Tennyson, and Charles Dickens.

The Isle of Wight is only 27 miles long at its widest point, so it is little wonder that many visitors choose to explore on foot or bicycle, stopping off to enjoy the many amazing views - including perhaps a sighting of our native red squirrel, and to sample a delicious pub lunch. The fact is, you can walk or cycle for miles without seeing a car, and with over half the island designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the scenery never runs out!

Or you might prefer to buy a Rover or Freedom ticket, which allows you unlimited bus travel during your stay. It is a great way to get around, and of course, someone else does the driving… But whatever you do, you can rely on lots of sea air, good food, and every opportunity to do the things you enjoy, and – if the mood takes you – learn something new, too.

Perhaps that is why Lonely Planet voted the Island as one of the world’s top cycling destinations.

Revitalised! There are also a number of health clubs and spas, including some within the bigger accommodation providers, which are designed to make it easier for you to relax and feel good.

Attractions The Isle of Wight has more than 60 attractions, offering something for everyone.

11

www.visitisleofwight.co.uk

Highlights of a visit might include a ride on a steam railway; getting close to the animals at Seaview Wildlife Encounter or Amazon World or Isle of Wight Zoo; riding a horse along the beach; experiencing Island history close up at Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne - Queen Victoria’s famous seaside retreat or The Needles Battery.

Our attractions are dotted around the Island, so wherever you are, you won’t have too far to travel - so why not leave the car behind, and catch the bus, or plan a walking or cycling route that includes one or more attractions? Many also have their own cafes or restaurants, and souvenir shops, so you can quite easily make a day of it. And don’t forget maritime history, too. There are guided tours of St Catherine’s Lighthouse on certain days of the week, and the Shipwreck Museum is packed to the rafters with memorabilia. Many attractions also run events across the year, so there are even more reasons to visit.

When you visit the Isle of Wight we want to make sure you have an experience you will remember and that you’ll come back time and time again. Star Ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks.

This scheme is a local annual inspection scheme accredited by Visit England. Assessments are carried out by independent assessors at Quality in Tourism (QIT), according to criteria agreed by Visit England. The Scheme has been developed to raise the overall minimum quality standards of accommodation for visitors to the Isle of Wight. Look out for this logo for establishments that have participated in this scheme.

There are two national assessing bodies Visit England and the AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent assessors.

SHANKLIN SANDOWN AND LAKE VENTNOR AND SOUTH WIGHT NEWPORT COWES AND EAST COWES

Sandown is one of the few seaside resorts to still have a Victorian pier, but there is much more to the area than this.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

If you want to offset some of this good living with a bit of healthy exercise, you could get some advice at the water sports centre at Lake, or perhaps try windsurfing and sailing at Yaverland.

Lake beach is safe and sandy, and a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the larger resorts. It is reached from the Cliff Path by a sloping footpath, or, also on foot, along the revetment, from Sandown or Shanklin. The path offers an easy stroll between Sandown and Shanklin, and the Lake cliffs are home to kestrels, fulmar petrels, swifts and cormorants. Lake also boasts a selection of international cuisine eateries.

Sandown has excellent bus, train and road train services. Home to Sandown Pier, Dinosaur Isle and the Isle of Wight Zoo offering great family days out.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

With one of the highest concentrations of dinosaur fossils anywhere in the world, the Isle of Wight has been dubbed ‘Dinosaur Island’. The area around Sandown Bay is a fun place for fossil hunting, so with a keen eye you could be leaving with a very special, very old souvenir.

RURAL WIGHT

Its long, golden sandy beach is a perfect place to spend the day. Relaxation comes easily here, with the help of food and drink at a licensed beach café, and a range of great restaurants and pubs, where you can sample local produce as well as menus from around the world.

WEST WIGHT

A visit to Sandown wouldn’t be complete without a stroll along the dramatic coastal path at Culver Down. The panoramic views over the bay, across the Island’s eastern coast and out to sea are simply stunning.

The town itself is built on a series of terraces, and just one level up from the esplanade, you will find small shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants offering a range of good quality food and drink options.

One of Ventnor’s other major attractions is the Botanic Garden, a 22-acre sub-tropical paradise. You can walk there from Ventnor along the coast, taking one of the island’s hidden gems, Steephill Cove, or walk along the high cliffs of St Lawrence overlooking woodland and an exposed rocky beach. All around Ventnor you’ll find beautiful walks with dramatic viewpoints.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

Enjoy the spectacular scenery from the top deck of one of the regular buses that serves the town. Catch a bus northwards to Shanklin, Sandown & Ryde, or travel across the Island to Godshill, Newport or Cowes.

RURAL WIGHT

Ventnor town centre features a good choice of antique and bric a brac shops, too, which are perfect for relaxed browsing. Then you might want to stretch your legs with a refreshing walk along the sea wall walkway to the picturesque and historic village of Bonchurch, which has a lovely village pond, places to eat and drink, and a tiny church full of character and history.

Bonchurch was one of Charles Dickens’ favourite places, so you will be in good company!

WEST WIGHT

Its sheltered beach is great for sunbathing and swimming, and with pubs and cafes along the newly updated esplanade, refreshments are never far away.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

Ventnor rose to prominence during the reign of Queen Victoria, and quickly became one of Britain’s most famous Victorian health resorts.

COWES AND EAST COWES

Ventnor is full of character, and its unique position on the hillside which slopes down to the sea has helped the town to enjoy a particularly warm climate.

SHANKLIN SANDOWN AND LAKE VENTNOR AND SOUTH WIGHT NEWPORT COWES AND EAST COWES

Cowes is famous all over the world for its sailing, and particularly for the legendary Cowes Week event, which brings enthusiasts and celebrities together to enjoy the island’s excellent sailing waters.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

In 1854, the Royal Yacht Squadron was moved into Cowes Castle, the former Tudor fort, and the name of Cowes has been synonymous with yachting ever since.

The pedestrianised high street is full of interesting boutiques, art galleries and shops with a nautical theme, to name but a few.

A short bus ride or car journey away, Osborne, Queen Victoria’s famous seaside retreat, is managed by English Heritage and provides a fascinating glimpse into the Victorian age.

Cowes and East Cowes grew from a huddle of fishermen’s shacks around two coastal forts built by Henry VIII on opposite banks of the River Medina. They are named after the two off-shore sandbanks or cows.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

The towns are linked by an old-fashioned chain ferry which is free to foot passengers, and have a tradition of fine ship building, dating from the reign of Elizabeth I. The yacht building industry grew as sailing became a popular sport, endorsed by the royal family.

A frequent bus service operates between Cowes and Newport, which links with the RedJet foot passenger ferry service in West Cowes, and the Red Funnel car ferry in East Cowes.

RURAL WIGHT

It is a small town packed with interesting shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, all of which combine to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

WEST WIGHT

It is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, but Cowes has much more to offer, too.

Ryde has been named The Gateway to the Island, and for good reason.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

Ryde’s golden sand beach - several miles of it - is great for swimming and beach games, and the town itself is packed with pubs, restaurants and shops.

Walk to Seaview, a charming and characterful village, which becomes a busy sailing centre in the summer. Then visit Bembridge, another good area for sailing with a delightful harbour, a pleasant beach with rock pools, and a village centre with shops and places to dine. Buses to all parts of the Island depart from Ryde Esplanade. Alternatively catch the train to Shanklin via Smallbrook (IW Steam Railway), Brading, Sandown and Lake.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

Appley Park has pitch and putt and the Victorian landmark Appley Tower. A plaque on the sea wall commemorates the epic voyage of The First Fleet, which anchored off the Mother Bank, just offshore, before setting sail for Australia’s Botany Bay in 1787.

Head East along the coast and discover some wonderful coastal villages – and tempting stops for food and drink.

RURAL WIGHT

The Esplanade has a marina, gardens and activities for all the family, such as bowling green, children’s amusement park, ice rink, tenpin bowling, nightclub, boating lake and swimming pool with retractable roof. Stroll along the sea wall to Puckpool Park, with café, tennis and children’s play park.

Union Street and High Street are full of interesting shops, pubs and restaurants.

WEST WIGHT

The catamaran from Portsmouth links to the national rail network, and docks at the end of Ryde Pier, and the connecting train can take you all the way to Shanklin!

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

West Wight is linked by good bus services from Newport. The “Needles Tour” links Yarmouth with Freshwater Bay, Alum Bay and the spectacular climb along a private cliff-top road to the Needles Battery.

RURAL WIGHT

Whether you’re stepping off the ferry or berthing your yacht, Yarmouth has some excellent shops, and several superb restaurants and pubs. The first Island settlement to be granted a royal town charter, in 1135, Yarmouth was sacked by the French in 1377 and 1524, and was raided several times until Henry VIII improved security by building a stone castle, which was completed in 1547. The castle is now managed by English Heritage.

Another impressive feature of the town is the unique 700ft long timber pier dating from 1876, now a Grade II listed building. More than 500 deck planks record the names of those who helped fund the pier’s restoration.

WEST WIGHT

Freshwater Bay is a good starting point for the Tennyson Trail – a dramatic walk along towering cliff-tops, and a coastal path like no other. And keep your eyes peeled for fossils – Compton Bay’s long sandy beach is not only a popular spot for surfing and swimming, but for its fascinating dinosaur walks and world famous dinosaur fossil finds.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

Visit Alum Bay’s famous coloured sand cliffs or take a boat trip to one of Britain’s most famous natural landscapes, the Needles.

COWES AND EAST COWES

The West Wight is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, not only a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers and walkers, but a must see for all visitors to the Island.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

www.visitisleofwight.co.uk

Accommodation Agencies It’s not easy, choosing the right place to stay.

Accommodation agencies can make the process much simpler and less stressful.

An agency - which has its own list of properties and expert staff - can be a big help in making sure you pick the right place to stay. For example, you may need a two bedroom property with a large secluded garden, close to a pub that serves food, and not too far from the sea. It could pay you to let an agency do the legwork for you. Wherever you stay, we’re sure you’ll love the Island and will want to come back for more!
