Avenue A Park is a beautiful gem nestled right off the Woodie Seat Freeway, and serves as the introduction to downtown. One can enjoy a quiet walk along the water, see amazing sculptures and enjoy live music on Third Thursday. The park is also a short walk from a number of downtown’s wonderful shops, restaurants and businesses.

3002 E. 30th Ave. Discover more than 300 species of woody plants, hundreds of varieties of birds and a large variety of wildlife along three miles of National Recreation Trails.

The Dillon Nature Center includes a spring-fed pond stocked with fish, surrounded by beautiful flower gardens and outdoor sculptures. New in 2017, the Taylor Shady Lane Cabin, located on the trails and grounds of Dillon Nature Center, includes: special events, lectures, classes and more!

The Nature Center features newlyrenovated and interactive exhibits, a meeting room, natural science classroom, nature library, observation deck and the Wild Things Gift Shop.

CITY PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS Hutchinson boasts several quality parks with plenty to do for the whole family. Fairgrounds Park features splash pads, a playground, and wonderful tennis courts. The Jim P. Martinez Sunflower Trail runs through Rice Park and its many amenities. Rivers Banks Orchard Park is the city’s newest park and features a brand new playground and is currently constructing a brand new disc golf course. There is truly something to do for everyone!

Cheney Reservoir is a camper’s delight. The Reservoir covers 9,537 surface acres and has 67 miles of shoreline.

Its 849-square mile drainage basin encompasses parts of five counties: Reno, Stafford, Pratt, Sedgwick and Kingman.

Accommodations include: park office, 223 electrical hookup sites (water available), about 400 primitive camp sites, shower houses, marina and much more!

28 MILES WEST OF HUTCHINSON 620.486.2393 Quivira National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1955 to provide and protect vital habitat for migratory waterfowl in the Central Flyway. Its 22,135 acres features rare inland salt marsh and sand prairie.

The prairie is considered to be a diverse community of hundreds of species of plants, with many species of mammals, birds, reptiles and other organisms that are prairie-dependent.

Roughly 7,000 acres of wetlands hosts thousands of Canada geese, meadowlarks and other migratory birds as they pass through the refuge on their annual migrations.

316.542.3664 KDWPT.STATE.KS.US This 1,123 acre state park was established in 1974. For the first 40 years, the park was maintained as a natural sand hill park with a trail system of 15 miles. Hiking is allowed on all trails and horseback riding is allowed on two-thirds of the trails.

A campground has been established with 64 utility sites; 44 sites have water, sewer and electricity; 20 sites have just water and electricity. All sites have 50 amp service; 14 sites have horse pens made up of two 12’ X 12’ pens.

These 14 sites are Prime Sites with an additional $2/day fee. Twenty of the sites have concrete camping pads and living areas.

All sites include a fire ring, lantern stand, picnic table and upright covered grills. A four-unit family shower building/restroom is on site, and cabins also are on the list for Sand Hills. The campground surrounds a five-acre pond stocked with mainly channel catfish.

CAREY PARK 620.694.1905 1600 Carey Park Blvd This 18-hole disc golf course winds its way along the outer edge of Carey Park. The course includes a variety of challenges, including a 546-foot hole, holes guarded by trees and water. Local leagues that play the course are hosted by the Little River Disc Golf Club and the Salt City Flight Club. The course also plays host to the Salt City Open every August.

This six-acre aquatic center in Carey Park features four pools, including a regulation 50-meter pool with basketball goals, a drop slide, large floating toys, fitness lap lanes and 1 and 3-meter diving boards. The facility’s Splash Pool features zero-depth entry, floating toys, slides and interactive spray features. Two large slides also drop into the Catch Pool. Younger children and families will enjoy the Tiny Tot Pool — a shallow water play area featuring smaller spray toys and slide and is connected to a land playground.

Salt City Splash can be rented for special events and offers birthday party packages. It also offers American Red Cross swim lessons, Toddler Time and Boomer Time on Saturday mornings and other various special events throughout the summer months.

Designed by the renowned Perry Maxwell, the first 9 holes at Prairie Dunes opened in 1937 after workers used horses and mules to form the course out of Reno County’s sand hills.

In 1957, the Dunes opened the second 9 holes, designed by Maxwell’s son, Press.

This herd of bison was started in 1989 by Jerry and Linda Schmidt, who raise them for meat and production purposes. The Schmidt’s, whose ranching philosophy centers on conservation, preservation, maintaining natural conditions and encouraging biodiversity also give group tours.

2000 N Poplar St. The annual Kansas State Fair begins the Friday following Labor Day and proceeds for 10 days at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

One of the single largest events in the State, the Kansas State Fair attracts approximately 330,000 visitors from all 105 counties and several other states.

The Fair offers tremendous opportunities for commerce with more than 1,100 commercial vendor locations; for competition, with more than 30,000 entries in various competitive exhibit departments; for education, through the Kansas Largest Classroom field trip program; and for entertainment with strolling entertainment throughout the grounds and stage entertainment in addition to the national acts performing at the Nex—Tech Wireless Grandstand. PRETTY PRAIRIE RODEO

Every summer the small town of Pretty Prairie hosts a four-day event, attended by thousands of rodeo fans from all over the world. For 81 years, the Pretty Prairie Rodeo has been an annual tradition for many residents in south central Kansas. The money raised is used to help local groups, including scholarships for local high school seniors, the Prairie Sunset Home, local Boy and Girl Scout troops and project prom.

The tournament each year features a handful of players who will go on to play at the major college level, and that attracts some of the nation’s top college coaches to Hutchinson for recruiting.

The rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), is known as Kansas’ largest night rodeo.

The first two nights are considered family nights at the rodeo with free admission for children 12 and under.

Main Street Hops for TECH kicks off our �irst series of events that is a Downtown Hutchinson partnership. Main Street Hops features two wonderful events in April and May; a Brewmaster’s Dinner at The Hutchinson Town Club, featuring a �ive-course meal with custom beer pairings and a Walkabout hosted by 15 local businesses.

TECH Fall Golf Classic

Take a swing for TECH and participate in the TECH Fall Golf Classic each October! This event includes an afternoon of golf, seated dinner and the opportunity to win an assortment of excellent prizes!

Even more significant though, is that the cannons flanking the monument are actually from the Confederate Army. One of the cannons is one of only eight remaining. The other is one-of-a-kind. This unique attraction is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial was designed by Hugh Price and built by Hutchinson Monument Works. It is a Grand Army of Republic commemorative Civil War monument, and one of only three multi-figure memorials in Kansas, combining a statue of Abraham Lincoln with statues of a sailor, an artilleryman, an infantryman and a cavalryman who represent the four branches of the Union Army.

Vernon Wiley, a local Hutchinson businessman and community leader, built the theater in 1931. The architects for the project were the Boller Brothers, who were nationally known for building grand, “movie palaces.”

The theater seats 1,221 patrons, and is one of Central Kansas’ premier entertainment destinations. It is renowned for its art-deco architecture; is the official, “State Movie Palace of Kansas,” as recognized by the Kansas state legislature; is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places; and has been named one of the best historical theatres in the United States by Architectural Digest.

The Fox strives to be Hutchinson’s gateway to the performing arts. The theater offers an eclectic mix of programming. This includes a regular season of live entertainment by nationally touring musical, theatrical, dance, and comedic acts; and a popular weekend film series that features current releases shown with the latest digital technology on its 40 ft. wide movie screen. The Space Muesum includes U.S. space artifacts second only to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Muesum and has the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. This unique collection allows the Cosmosphere to tell the story of the Space race better than any museum on Earth.

The Cosmosphere puts on a summer camp and year-round STEM education which gives kids the oportunity to learn Next Generation Science and Common Core curriculum standards. These programs also foster teamwork, leadership, critical thinking skills and introduce students to the power of wondering. Another great attraction focuses on rocket science, in Dr. Goddard’s Lab where beautifuly filmed documentaries are shown in Kansas’ only digital dome theater.

Guests from all of over the world come to glimpse some of the unique artifacts housed in the museum, from the flown SR71 Blackbird in the Cosmosphere lobby to the flown Gemini X capsule and the actual Apollo 13 command module, Odyssey. Other notable pieces include V1 and V2 rockets found following World War II, a flight-ready, back-up Sputnik and an actual Moon rock brought home from the first Moon landing by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Guests are able to explore the mine by taking a train ride through one of the largest salt deposits in the world. Another option is the salt safari — a guided experience into not-so-explored parts of the mine. Unusual formations are pointed out by trained guides.

Exhibits on the self-guided museum tour underground include heavy equipment, dynamite displays and other items that are a window into another time. Cars and a tractor, as well as the mining equipment illustrate the ingenuity that was required. Items once abandoned as trash are now fascinating displays.

Museum exhibits include some of the unusual items stored underground by Underground Vaults and Storage. The climate is perfect for safe storage and this company preserves items from every state and many foreign countries. On display are costumes from Hollywood blockbusters.

While the 62-year-old Sports Arena has traditionally been home to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in March, it is now the home to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship in November. Those are in addition to a myriad of other uses, including the Boys and Girls 3A State high school basketball tournaments and Hutchinson Community College home games, as well as the Dillon Lecture Series — featuring speakers renowned nationally and internationally.

A modern multi-use facility, the Hutchinson High School Salthawk Activity Center is home to Hutchinson High School basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.

The mezzanine level offers functional space that is available for a variety of events including theater, banquets and meetings.

Gowans Stadium is among the crown jewels of football facilities in the Midwest. This venue draws a variety of high school and college, state and national football and track championships.

In 2005, Gowans underwent a two-year, $5.2 million renovation that included a state-of-the-art, eight-lane track, pits for long and triple jump, runways for pole vault and high jump along with expanded seating capacity, new entrance gates, public restrooms, locker rooms and concession areas.

Additional enhancements included replacement of the Field Turf surface in 2016. Gowans Stadium also boasts a video board, which enhances the game day experience for fans with instant replays and highlight videos.

Provided through a partnership between Westar, Hutchinson Community College, the Buhler School District and Prairieland Partners, the course provides a beautiful, scenic trail with a mix of hills and flat areas for joggers and walkers.
