STRATACA Come and visit the bedrock of Kansas history at Strataca, Underground Salt Museum. One of the most unique locations in the State of Kansas, it is 650’ feet underground. Explore the old 30’s, 40’s and 50’s section of the Carey Salt Mine. Through your self-guided tour, you will discover mining machines, marvel at movie costumes and props housed underground. Enjoy a ride on the Salt Mine Express, a train that takes you out on the original rail lines. Then, hop on a tram and enjoy a family favorite, the Dark Ride. Try our exclusive tram ride to complete your mine experience through the maze of the 1950’s section called the Salt Safari. This tour gives you a deeper understanding about mining and experience the amazing awe of a vast space and openness of the mine. Strataca offers an adventure that families will want to experience again and again.

COSMOSPHERE Step inside the Cosmosphere, Kansas’ only Smithsonian-affiliated museum and science education center, where the lobby explodes with an authentic SR-71 Blackbird spy plane! Guests from all over the world come to admire the unique artifacts--including the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow-- like the flown Gemini X and the authentic Apollo 13 Odyssey. Other notable pieces include the V-1 and V-2 rockets, a flight-ready back-up Sputnik and an actual Moon rock brought home from the first Moon landing by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. In addition, visitors can see rocket science brought to life with a bang in Dr. Goddard’s Lab, watch documentaries in amazing scale in a 4K digital dome theater, and gain new insight into the universe in the Cosmosphere’s state-of-the-art Planetarium.

The events, shows, and festivals that’s on everyone’s radar FAMILY FUN

Grab your bowling shoes and load up the family! The Alley Indoor Entertainment complex in Hutchinson is a must-see for visitors young and old! The large-scale complex boasts 20 lanes for league and open bowling and six lanes for private parties or drop-in bowlers.

Non-bowlers will enjoy the laser-tag area, an arcade area with 80 video games, and the Spin Zone Bumper Cars! Head outdoors for some family fun at Hutch Putt, Hutchinson’s 18-hole miniature golf course. This vibrant course features a ball-in-water shot, a pipe shot, and a boulder arch for added difficulty.

Whether it is petting a zebra, admiring a kangaroo, riding a camel or observing the ostriches, Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm offers an opportunity to come face-to-face with unusual animals. It’s an animal adventure truly unlike any other in the Midwest.

For another animal adventure jump on the Prairie Thunder Railroad and explore the 100 different species that can be found at the Hutchinson Zoo, located in the heart of Carey Park. Enjoy the interactive exhibits designed for children and families including climb-through prairie dog tunnels, fish feeding and a Dino Dig.

Hutch Putt Surround yourself with the beauty of the great outdoors at Dillon Nature Center, a 100-acre ‘wild arboretum’ designated as a National Urban Wildlife Sanctuary. Discover more than 300 species of woody plants, 200 species of birds, and a large variety of other wildlife along three miles of National Recreation Trails. It includes a spring fed pond stocked with fish, beautiful flower gardens, outdoor sculptures, and a natural children’s playscape area.

During the long summer days, cool off at Salt City Splash, Hutchinson’s exclusive water park.

There is something for the whole family to enjoy with everything from four pools, including a regulation 50-meter pool with basketball goals, fitness lap lanes and diving boards to slides, large floating toys, and a Tiny Tot Pool.

If you are feeling artistic and want to ‘Do It Yourself’, visit some of Hutchinson’s newest creative venues, Splinters-N-Rust or Lit Studios Paint & Pottery. Both venues strive to engage the creativity of people of all ages and show that anyone can create a masterpiece.

The Wool Market and DIY School provides a place where you can learn a new skill or craft, or work on a joint project.

Discover local and regional masterpieces at the Hutchinson Art Center, featuring a wide variety of gallery exhibits by regional and national artists displaying paintings, sculpture, photography and other art forms. The gallery also offers artwork for sale by many local artists through their gift shop, Consignment Art Gallery, Annual Art Fair in May and Annual Members Art Show in October.

Shop for original paintings, scarves, greeting cards and calendars all done by individuals with disabilities at TECH Art Gallery in Downtown Hutchinson. Then, head north on Main Street to Midtown Hutchinson, to enjoy an unprecedented experience at The Clayworks at Disability Supports. Featuring unique clay and pottery pieces, artisan glass work, and handcrafted jewelry as well as greeting cards and two-dimensional art, The Clayworks is a “must-see” stop when visiting Hutchinson. The Reno County Museum’s collection contains over 40,000 artifacts representing farming, industry, arts & culture, and most importantly the stories of Reno County citizens.

Our five rotating galleries and interactive children’s area are sure to be an excellent experience whether you’re visiting Reno County or call it home. Visit our interactive play area where the kids will have a blast playing in the old general store, schoolhouse, jail, and more!

The Hutchinson Public Library has all the resources you need from digitized books and archives to government documents and the Kansas Room, filled with genealogical and local history materials.

RENO COUNTY MUSEUM

TECH ART GALLERY

The Reno County Veterans Memorial represents the commitment of the citizens of Reno County to honor those who have served in our military. The final phase of this project will be the addition of 14 granite panels displaying the names of over 15,400 Reno County veterans from the Civil War through today. The memorial site also features the flags and emblems of all the branches of service, as well as tribute to the POW/MIA service members.

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, completed in 1919, is a Grand Army of Republic commemorative Civil War monument and one of only three multi-figure memorials in Kansas, combining a statue of Abraham Lincoln with statues of a sailor, and artilleryman, an infantryman and a cavalry man - representing the four branches of the Union Army.

Known as one of Central Kansas’ premier entertainment destinations, it has been named one of the best historical theatres in the United States by Architectural Digest. Kansas State Fair September 10-19 | kansasstatefair.com

The 2021 Kansas State Fair kicks off September 10-19, and with the opening of the gates, comes a lot of fond memories. Nothing says so long summer like the Fair. It’s the ultimate celebration of Kansas culture, industry, agriculture, people, communities and, of course, food. It’s a place where all the iconic features of Kansas life – from prized livestock and vegetables to 4-H to music to tractor sales – and everything else in between come together.

Today, the Fair is the largest gathering of Kansans in the state, drawing in an average of 340,000 people annually. It continues to be a family tradition mixed with new and exciting thrills. It’s still the place to see the famous butter sculpture, giant pumpkins, grandstand entertainment, the legendary Ye Old Mill and the Governor’s Cookie Jar. The Fair offers tremendous opportunities for commerce with about 700 vendors on display across the Fairgrounds. Plus, more than 40,000 youth and adults enter contests – which represents all 105 Kansas counties. Also, about 14,000 youth come to the Fair each year with Kansas’ Largest Classroom to learn more about agriculture, art, science and math. That includes about 100 high school bands that represent about 75 V I counties.

NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship November 18-20 | njcaa.org The NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship was first hosted at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in 2017. Since then the Championship was hosted in Hutchinson until 2019. The best two-year volleyball teams will return to Hutchinson this November and again in 2023.

The Championship features the top 16 teams in NJCAA Division I Volleyball!

The Kansas State Fairgrounds plays host to approximately 500 non-fair events and shows throughout the year. With over 280 acres and 75 buildings, the possibilities are endless! In 2019, the Kansas State Fairgrounds hosted the Luke Bryan Farm Tour and in 2020, the Fairgrounds welcomed Lauren Daigle for her Autumn Nights Drive-Up Concert!

Every summer the small town of Pretty Prairie hosts a four-day event, attended by thousands of rodeo fans from all over the world. The rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), is known as Kansas’ Largest Night Rodeo. The first two nights are considered family nights at the rodeo with free admission for children 12 and under, and a dance is held under the stars each night following the rodeo.

The NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship is held annually each spring at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The first official NJCAA National Championship was in 1948 in Springfield, MO. The event moved to Hutch in 1949, and has been here ever since.

Every year the Hutchinson Sports Arena plays host to the best men’s junior college basketball teams in the country. Basketball fans from around the country travel the ‘Road to Hutch’ each year and this long-standing event, known widely as ‘The Tournament’, has helped make Hutchinson a sports destination. It consistently features players who go on to play at the major college level, and attracts some of the nation’s top college coaches to town for recruiting.

The Tournament features the top 24 teams in Division I men’s basketball of the NJCAA.

Yoder Heritage Day 4th Saturday in August | yoderkansas.com Several thousand people flock to the small community of Yoder to celebrate Yoder Heritage Day. Visitors and locals are entertained by tractor pulls, horse-drawn events and the annual parade down Main Street, quilt auction, buggy races, great food and entertainment.

CITY PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS Hutchinson boasts many quality parks including seven which rank in the top 10% nationally. From splash pads to disc golf courses, a skate park to tennis courts, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, and even a zoo - there is truly something to do for everyone!

Chester I. Lewis Plaza 15 East 1st Ave

Hutchinson’s newest plaza is located in Downtown Hutchinson and is named after local civil rights attorney who fought against segregation. Lewis is depicted in the left-most mural, Brendan Martinez’s “Justice of All Trades Lewis,” alongside elements of the Hutchinson municipal flag. The center mural was created by Rebekah Lewis and Josh Tripoli, of Lupoli Collective in Wichita. It showcases key images that are unique to the Hutchinson area in a postcard-style design.

Need to cool off, but don’t have time for a trip to the pool? Visit one of Hutchinson’s three interactive water parks. These parks, operated by the City of Hutchinson, are open to the public and provided free of charge Memorial Day through Labor Day.

One of Hutchinson’s newest parks, it encompasses 72 acres and continues to be developed. One unique feature is The Winwoods Enchanted Playground, which is designed to be enjoyed by children of all ages and abilities. Set among fantastical characters, it includes special slides, swings, a teeter-totter, and xylophones the children can play.

Sand Hills State Park

4207 East 56th Ave (East of K61 on 56th & 69th Ave) This 1,123 acre state park was established in 1974. For the first 40 years, the park was maintained as a natural sand hill park with a trail system of 15 miles. Hiking is allowed on all trails and horseback riding is allowed on two-thirds of the trails.

A campground has been established with 64 utility sites; 44 sites have water, sewer and electricity; 20 sites have just water and electricity. All sites have 50 amp service; 14 sites have horse pens made up of two 12’ X 12’ pens. These 14 sites are Prime Sites with an additional $2/day fee. Twenty of the sites have concrete camping pads and living areas.

All sites include a fire ring, lantern stand, picnic table and upright covered grills. A four-unit family shower building/restroom is on site, and cabins also are on the list for Sand Hills. The campground surrounds a five-acre pond stocked with mainly channel catfish.

SAND HILLS STATE PARK

Cheney State Park 12 miles south of Hutchinson

Cheney State Park offers a great weekend getaway with sailing, fishing, boating and a host of other outdoor activities.

Cheney Reservoir is a camper’s delight. The Reservoir covers 9,537 surface acres and has 67 miles of shoreline. Its 849-square mile drainage basin encompasses parts of three counties: Reno, Sedgwick and Kingman. Accommodations include: park office, 223 electrical hookup sites (water available), about 400 primitive camp sites, shower houses, marina and much more!

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1955 to provide and protect vital habitat for migratory waterfowl in the Central Flyway. Its 22,135 acres features rare inland salt marsh and sand prairie. Roughly 7,000 acres of wetlands hosts thousands of Canada geese, meadowlarks and other migratory birds as they pass through the refuge on their annual migrations.

Their rentals give floaters the opportunity to enjoy a five-mile stretch of the river between the 4th Avenue bridge west of Hutchinson and Carey Park. Their shuttle services access points between Haven and Nickerson for kayakers and canoers with their own equipment. A sandy bottom and a lot of sand bars make for great sunbathing, swimming and picnics. Arkanoe provides everything you need for a safe and enjoyable canoe or kayaking experience including paddles, life vests, boats and shuttle.

Disc Golf Looking for the perfect spot to play disc golf in the Hutchinson area where you can show off your skills, incorporate strategy, compete with friends and be in nature?

The newest disc golf course is at Rivers Banks Orchard Park and was developed in 2018 in cooperation with a local group of disc golfers. This course is a moderately wooded technical course with plenty of elevation and challenging holes. It has cement tee pads, multiple pin positions and is considered somewhat cart friendly.

The 18-hole disc golf course at Carey Park winds its way along the park’s outer edge. Set around a fishing lake with a little elevation created by man-made berms, this course is mostly open with a mix of mature and new trees. The course has concrete tee pads throughout and is considered cart friendly. It plays host to the Salt City Open every August.

YODER THE QUIET LITTLE TOWN OF YODER

When the town of Yoder was founded by Eli Yoder in 1889 it was considered to be the hub of the surrounding Amish community. Today, Yoder is still considered to be that. Though many businesses and homes have moved in around Yoder, the picturesque town has stayed that same size, and is only 15 minutes away from Hutchinson.

ATHLETIC COMPLEXES Catch a game and cheer on your favorite teams as Hutchinson frequently hosts sports fans and players at one of our many athletic complexes that are home to several state, regional and national events.

Home to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, the Hutchinson Sports Arena is one of the premier sports venues in Kansas. After a $30 million renovation, the Sports Arena has three full sized-auxiliary gyms and can seat over 5,500 in the Main Arena. The Kansas State High School Activities Association has called the Sports Arena home for the 3A Basketball Championship for over 20 years. Other recent events at the Sports Arena include multiple Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball events and the 3A & 4A State Volleyball Championship.

Gowans Stadium is among the crown jewels of football facilities in the Midwest. This venue draws a variety of high school and college, state and national football and track championships. The facility includes a state-of-the-art, eight-lane track, ample seating capacity, new entrance gates, public restrooms, locker rooms and concession areas. Gowans Stadium also boasts a video board, which enhances the game day experience for fans with instant replays and highlight videos. The stadium will host the Kansas Shrine Bowl for the first time this summer.

A modern multi-use facility, the Hutchinson High School Salthawk Activity Center is home to Hutchinson High School basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs. The Hutchinson High School campus features three regulation sized basketball courts and is located directly across the street from the Hutchinson Sports Arena, bringing the total number of courts to seven between the two facilities.

Westar/Prairie Ridge Park, the 5-kilometer cross-country course, winds around 200 acres of vacant land between Prairie Hills Middle School and Dillon Nature Center. This course provides a beautiful, scenic trail with a mix of hills and flat areas for joggers and walkers.
