HISTORIC NATIONAL ROAD SCENIC BYWAY
AMERICA’S FIRST HIGHWAY
Journey along the National Road, America’s first federally funded highway, originally built as a westward path for settlers. Today, you can follow their footsteps through forests, around mountains, and past iconic landmarks that tell over two centuries of stories. Visit the National Road Museum to learn about the road’s history, climb the rugged stone tower at Washington Monument State Park, and experience frontier life at Fort Frederick State Park. Don’t miss a stop at the 1850s Wilson Country School and Store for a taste of the past, and immerse yourself in Hagerstown’s vibrant arts scene at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, along the Cultural Trail, or at the Maryland Theater.
C&O CANAL SCENIC BYWAY A 19TH-CENTURY MARVEL
Explore the C&O Canal, affectionately known as “The Grand Old Ditch.” This 19th-century engineering marvel once allowed muledrawn boats to navigate the rocky Potomac River, connecting western farms to eastern markets. Today, the historic canal and its towpath form a 184.5-mile hiking and biking trail (part of the C&O Canal National Historical Park), stretching from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, MD. This byway takes you through charming canal-era towns like Sharpsburg, Williamsport, and Hancock, offering wineries, museums, restaurants, shops, and parks along the way.
ANTIETAM CAMPAIGN BYWAY A JOURNEY THROUGH U.S. HISTORY
Trace the events leading up to the bloodiest single day in American history on the Antietam Campaign Scenic Byway. This 126-mile route, mirroring General Lee’s march, traverses Montgomery and Frederick counties before reaching South Mountain, where Confederate and Union troops clashed before their fateful meeting at Antietam. Walk the preserved battlefields of South Mountain State Park and Antietam National Battlefield, and explore the surrounding towns. The largely unchanged rural landscape offers breathtaking vistas just as they appeared to our ancestors.
SIDLING HILL
QUAINT HISTORIC TOWNS
Explore Washington County’s charming towns. Scenic drives along our three byways—Maryland Historic National Road, Antietam Campaign, and the C&O Canal Byway—promise hidden gems.
BOONSBORO: AN APPALACHIAN TRAIL TOWN AND HOME OF BEST-SELLING AUTHOR, NORA ROBERTS
Founded in 1792 on the main road from Hagerstown to Frederick, along the Maryland National Road. Visit the Washington Monument, along the Appalachian Trail, dedicated in 1827. Explore the newly opened National Road Museum and quaint Main Street shops like Josie’s on Main. Nora Roberts’ fans can visit her shops, Turn the Page and Gifts Inn Boonsboro, as well as stay at her Inn BoonsBoro on the Square. Visit the Boonsboro Trolley Musuem and the newly opened National Road Museum.
CLEAR SPRING: CROSSROADS OF COMMERCE
Founded in 1821 by Martin Myers, this historic town 12 miles west of Hagerstown was a popular stop on the National Road. Myers’ crock and jug shop grew into a small hotel, attracting pioneers to stay at the “hotel by the spring.” Today, visit the historic Wilson Store and you can grab a bite at Sweetsie’s Eats & Treats! Other nearby attractions include Whitetail Mountain Resort, Hagerstown Speedway and Fort Frederick State Park.
FUNKSTOWN: QUAINT SHOPS & CIVIL WAR HISTORY
In 1823, the Old National Pike was built through Funkstown, making it a popular stop along the way, heading west. A Civil War battle happened here, too. Antique stores are dotted throughout the community and along the Alt. US 40.
HAGERSTOWN: THE HUB CITY
German immigrant Jonathan Hager built the first house here in 1739. The Jonathan Hager House & Museum still stands as a carefully preserved museum, giving visitors a window to the 18th century. The Historic National Road brought growth to Hagerstown, our Capital and largest city. This and the railroads intersecting here gave it its nickname, “Hub City.” Our City Center, in Downtown Hagerstown and the Arts and Entertainment District, where you’ll find restaurants, and such cultural attractions as The Maryland Theatre, home of the renowned Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Stroll the Cultural Trail to our Museum of Fine Arts. A great game of golf can be played at Black Rock Golf Course or at Hagerstown Greens at Hamilton Run.
HANCOCK: MARYLAND’S OFFICIAL TRAIL TOWN!
The westernmost town in Washington County, it is situated on the Potomac River at the narrowest point in Maryland. In 1818, the National Pike, Hancock’s Main Street, was officially opened. The C&O Canal National Historical Park runs along the southern border of the town. Hop off the trails to visit antique and specialty shops, such as the Blue Goose Fruit Market and Bakery and Flannel on the Trail, and restaurants such as the pet-friendly Buddy Lou’s Eats Drinks & Antiques. Cyclists can get bike services and shuttled by the C&O Canal Bicycle Shop.
Located eight miles south of Hagerstown, Keedysville was once a vital link on the B&O Railroad. Today, it boasts a unique combination of farmland and Victorian architecture. Sip some local varietals at the scenic and awardwinning winery, Big Cork Vineyards. Crystal Grottoes Caverns lies just west of town and is Maryland’s only commercial cavern.
SHARPSBURG: A CIVIL WAR LEGACY
Sharpsburg is intrinsically tied to the Battle of Antietam. On September 17, 1862, this peaceful town was the place where two massive armies clashed, leaving 23,110 casualties. The Confederate loss at the Battle prompted President Lincoln to issue the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The Antietam National Battlefield and the Antietam National Cemetery, Pry House Field Hospital Museum and Newcomer House Exhibit and Visitor’s Center are must see sites to grasp the immense effect of the day. Grab a bite at the Battleview Market or Bonnie’s at the Red Byrd with delicious home-style meals. Sip some wine after touring the sites at Antietam Creek Vineyards.
SMITHSBURG: HISTORY, INTRIGUE, WINERY AND ORCHARDS
Established 1846, this Gettysburg retreat town thrives with farms and wineries. Enjoy Red Heifer Winery’s cozy winter igloos, perfect for group gatherings with stunning mountain views and local wines. Or, find fresh produce at local orchards. Favorite stops are Ivy Hill Farm, Misty Meadows Creamery, Rinehart Orchards. Discover Fort Ritchie: historic Army post, now a developing village with scenic trails.
WILLIAMSPORT: EPICENTER OF THE C&O CANAL
At the center of the 184 miles of the C&O Canal Towpath, it is often called the “Jewel in the Necklace” of this National Historical Park. The 1934 opening of the C&O Canal transformed this town into a thriving waterfront community, along the Potomac River. Offering an abundance of hiking, biking, kayaking and other water sports, visitors can jump off the Canal for dining, bike repair, and lodging.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT
THE CIVIL WAR
in Washington County & Beyond
Walk in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, and legendary generals Stonewall Jackson, George B. McClellan, George Armstrong, and Robert E. Lee.
Washington County has often been referred to as the crossroads of the Civil War. Though it’s most well-known for the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, its Civil War history is far more extensive than the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
Antietam National Battlefield is a pristinely preserved historic site, known as the bloodiest single-day battle in the US history. Fought on September 17, 1862, it resulted in over 23,000
casualties. The Confederate Army failed in their attempt to advance north of the Potomac, resulting in the Union’s victory. The outcome of the battle prompted President Lincoln to issue the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
Explore over 3,000 acres of preserved land, including monuments, artillery pieces, Pry House Field Hospital Museum, Dunker Church, and Burnside Bridge. Venture off the battlefield, to the nearby towns of Funkstown, Sharpsburg and
Boonsboro, nearly every building was utilized as a hospital in the aftermath. The battlefield is a popular destination for Civil War buffs, history enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers alike.
Antietam Battlefield Guide Service offers certified guided tours of the battlefield, and a self-guided auto tour for those who wish to explore the battlefield on their own, available in the Visitor Center.

Weaving the Tapestry: African American Contributions to Washington County
The tapestry of American history is woven with threads of triumph and struggle, and nowhere is this truer than with the story of slavery. The Civil War may not have begun in Washington County, Maryland, but its echoes reverberated deeply here. Sharpsburg, the site of the bloody Battle of Antietam, witnessed a turning point, leading President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
But the story doesn’t begin or end with a single battle. From the 1740s, the shadow of slavery stretched across Washington County. In 1820, nearly 14% of the population – over 3,200 people – were denied their freedom. Even as the Civil War raged, almost 1,500 remained enslaved. It wasn’t until November 1864 that Maryland finally abolished this cruel practice.
Hagerstown and Washington County hold a wealth of stories waiting to be seen and heard. These are stories of resilience, of daring escapes, and of the unyielding pursuit of liberty. Countless of the enslaved in Washington County risked everything to break free from the shackles of bondage. Though the exact number who succeeded remains a mystery, we know many relied on the quiet courage of free people of color who offered crucial assistance.
Beyond local heroes, a network of activists known as the Underground Railroad stretched its lifeline across the North. A beacon of hope for those fleeing south, it offered a path to freedom, often leading through neighboring Pennsylvania. While the organized network primarily operated further to our East, its reach sometimes extended into western Maryland, providing a critical escape route for enslaved people.
Ready to delve deeper into these powerful narratives? Uncover the stories of Washington County’s African American heroes and explore the local sites that bear witness to their struggles. EXPLORE HISTORIC HAGERSTOWN
WHO WAS JONATHAN HAGER?
Jonathan Hager emigrated from Germany in 1736 and made his first land purchase in 1739, named “Hager’s Fancy”, and built what is known today as the Hager House. The following year in 1740, he married German immigrant Elizabeth Kirshner and raised two children, Rosanna and Jonathan Jr., before his wife’s death in 1765.
walking the streets from the perspective of town founder Jonathan Hager. From the site of his first family residence in City Park through downtown to the historic burial site of the Hager family. The tour includes museums, historic sites, and collections that focus on Hager’s legacy and the founding of Hagerstown from 1739 through 1813.
The through downtown Hagerstown and connected Western Maryland to Baltimore. It was a nation’s capital.
Town Renamed Elizabethtown was formally incorporated as Hagerstown.
Jonathan Hager held many professions throughout his lifetimefarmer, gunsmith, soldier, entrepreneur, and politician. Hager served as Captain of Scouts during the French & Indian War and owned thousands of acres of land during his lifetime. He laid out the plans for Elizabethtown in the 1760s, named after his wife.
In 1771, Hager was elected to the Maryland General Assembly and re-elected in 1773. He advocated for economic growth and the advancement of Western Maryland. He was a prominent Patriot figure in Western Maryland. In the decade before the Revolutionary War, he served on committees of non-importation, observation and correspondence.
FUN FACT
He died November 6, 1775, from an injury attributed to the construction of the German Reformed Church (now the Zion Reformed United Church of Christ). Today, his legacy lives on in the city that bears his name, Hagerstown, a small town that grew from humble agricultural beginnings to an enterprising railroading community to today’s Hub City focused on growth and progress for its people.
The weathervane, “Little Heiskell,” has been a symbol of the city since the early days of Elizabethtown. Attributed to tinsmith Benjamin Heiskell and made in 1769, the weathervane depicts a colonial era Ranger. He sat atop government buildings for over 150 years until he was retired when the current City Hall was built. Displaying a bullet hole, the artifact was infamously “shot through the heart” by Confederate sharp shooters during the Civil War and is available for viewing at the Jonathan Hager House Museum. A replica sits atop City Hall today and his image is spread throughout the city. How many Heiskell’s can you find around Hagerstown?
