ANTIETAM CREEK WATER
A tributary to the Potomac River, Antietam Creek offers year-round paddling for those who want a cold water winter trip or just a serene summer time paddle experience. The Antietam Creek Water Trail identifies access points and float times to help boaters plan trips on this iconic waterway. Best floats occur when the river gauge reads 3.4 ft. With 11 places to launch, visit the online map for additional resources and information to plan your adventure.
The Conococheague Creek (aka the Jig) is a tributary of the Potomac River. It originates near Chambersburg, PA, and crosses under the old C&O Canal aqueduct near Williamsport, Maryland, and then into the Potomac River. It is 80 miles long, with 23 miles in Washington County. The word “Conococheague” is translated from a Delaware Native American tribe, Unami-Lenapi term, òk’chaxk’hanna, which means “many-turns-river.”
We recommend these locations:
The boat ramp in Williamsport is just upstream from its confluence with the Potomac River, with plenty of parking and picnic tables.
River Bottom Park West Salisbury St., Williamsport, MD 21795
To Paddle near Clear Spring: 12360 Earth Care Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740 Parking is on left hand side of the landfill, prior to crossing the Conococheague Creek.
Also known as the “Nations River” because of its prominent place in history, the Potomac River offers many opportunities for boating, kayaking, and more. There are white water locations, and more calm locations.
For beginner paddlers, we recommend these lakes and ponds for ease of input and paddling. They offer lovely mountain views and calm serene waters that are easier to navigate.
During the C&O Canal days of operations, this 1.5 miles long pool was a convenient turning point for canal boats. It is a natural depression that was filled with water during C&O Canal construction, within Fort Frederick State Park. There is a boat ramp, gas motors are prohibited.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Check website for trail heads, nps.gov/appa/index.htm
The Appalachian Trail follows along scenic and challenging terrain. Some of the most spectacular views along the AT can be seen at High Rock, Annapolis Rock, Weverton Cliffs, and Black Rock Cliff. Another challenging but well-known hike to an impressive overlook is at Maryland Heights overlooking historic Harpers Ferry, WV. State park trails at Greenbrier and the Washington Monument offer more moderate hiking opportunities.
WESTERN MARYLAND RAIL TRAIL
The Western Maryland Rail Trail has over 22 miles of paved trail through the scenic Maryland countryside. It’s perfect to travel on foot or by bicycle.
Our iconic scenic overlooks provide some of the most breathtaking vistas in the Mid-Atlantic. Some are easy to get to, some are the payoff for a moderate to difficult hike. All are near quaint small towns that offer great dining, shopping, hiking gear and more.
Know Before You Go! We encourage you to check information on weather and in-depth trail conditions via the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources website and AllTrails.com.
Along the Blue Ridge Mountains near Elk Ridge is Maryland Heights Overlook, and here hikers can see the most famous view of the town of Harper’s Ferry, in Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park. Surrounded by the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers, the payoff for this moderate to strenuous hike is one of the very best. The trail is 4-6 miles round trip, depending on which access point is selected.
Access Points: Park at the Visitor Center parking area in Harper’s Ferry, WV, and use the park’s free shuttle system or the Visitor Center to Lower Town Trail to access the trail from Lower Town. Check website for fees to enter the park and for parking, maps, and more information. https://rb.gy/cwbl2d
Best Time to Go: Mid-week is less crowded, so we recommend a Monday-Friday visit.
Located along the Maryland portion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T.), at an elevation of 1,700’ this hike is moderately strenuous with some steep inclines and non-level footing. A 2.2 mile hike, this is a popular spot for both hikers and rock climbers and the gorgeous vista includes a westward view of Greenbrier Lake and the Cumberland Valley. If you are still more ambitious, continue north on the A.T. one mile to Black Rock, which also offers a similar view.
Access Point: Parking lot on Route 40, one-quarter mile east of Greenbrier State Park. Follow blue blazed trail from the parking lot to white blazed A.T. signs. Turn right to go north on A.T. Return the same way to parking area. Check website for parking fees and other info.
Best Time to Go: Mid-week hikes are the best! Parking is limited and becomes very crowded on weekends and holidays.
A highway stop, no hiking is required to see this amazing area. When the highway was under construction, it was determined that a cut through the mountain rather than to building over it was more advantageous. According to the MD Geological Survey website, “One of the best rock exposures in Maryland and indeed in the entire northeastern United States is located approximately 6 miles west of Hancock where Interstate 68 cuts through Sideling Hill. Almost 810 feet of strata in a tightly folded syncline are exposed in this road cut.” Sideling Hill is geographic marvel, and there is a state Welcome Center with restrooms and brochures available.
Access: Route 68 West, Mile Marker 74 Best Time To Go: Anytime to see the views. Visitor Welcome Center is open Thurs-Mon.
Also located along the A.T., High Rock Overlook is part of Pen Mar Park, located on Mount Quirac, along the Mason Dixon Line. With an elevation of 1,400 feet, this site is easy to get to via car. There are two ways to view this overlook; one is from a covered pavilion in the park, and a the second is ¼ mile drive to the end of Pen Mar High Rock Road. There, visitors can sit atop a high rock outcropping to soak in the view. This scenic vista gives a northern view into Pennsylvania.
Access Point: 11400 Pen Mar High Rock Rd., Cascade, Maryland. Parking is free.
Best Time to Go: Busier on weekends. The park pavilion has festive musical entertainment with dancing on Sunday afternoons. May-Sep.
Located atop South Mountain, along the A.T., Washington Monument State Park is named for the first completed monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. The monument is a 40’ rugged stone tower that was initially erected by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827, sitting at 1,600’ elevation. The park is an ideal site for spotting migratory birds such as hawks, eagles and falcons, especially in mid-September. Stop by the park office or museum to learn more about the first major Civil War battle fought in Maryland. After, take the short hike up to the monument. This is a fairly easy hike for hikers and non-hikers at .4-mile round trip.
Access: Washington Monument State Park, 6620 Zittlestown Road, Middletown MD 21769. Park in the main lot, access the trail from the marked entry point.
Best Time To Go: There are rangers and docents who can talk about the historical aspects of the park on weekends. It is less crowded during the week.
Washington County is home to FIVE National Parks.
Our parks offer a range of amenities– everything from historic monuments and battlefields to waterways with camping, trails and boat launches. We also have three Canal Towns along the C&O Canal: Hancock, Sharpsburg and Williamsport. Each town offers dining, bicycle repairs and bike-friendly places to spend the night.

Washington County has often been referred to as the crossroads of the Civil War. Though it’s most well-known for the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, its Civil War history is far more extensive than the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
Antietam National Battlefield is a pristinely preserved historic site, known as the bloodiest single-day battle in the US history. Fought on September 17, 1862, it resulted in over 23,000 casualties. The Confederate Army failed in
their attempt to advance north of the Potomac, resulting in the Union’s victory. The outcome of the battle prompted President Lincoln to issue the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
Explore over 3,000 acres of preserved land, including monuments, artillery pieces, Pry House Field Hospital Museum, Dunker Church, and Burnside Bridge. The tapestry of American history is woven with threads of triumph and struggle, and nowhere is this truer than with the story of slavery. The Civil War may not have begun in Washington County, Maryland, but its echoes reverberated deeply here. Sharpsburg, the site of the bloody Battle of Antietam, witnessed a turning point, leading President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
But the story doesn’t begin or end with a single battle. From the 1740s, the shadow of slavery stretched across Washington County. In 1820, nearly 14% of the population – over 3,200 people – were denied their freedom. Even as the Civil War raged, almost 1,500 remained enslaved. It wasn’t until November 1864 that Maryland finally abolished this cruel practice.
Hagerstown and Washington County hold a wealth of stories waiting to be seen and heard. These are stories of resilience, of daring escapes, and of the unyielding pursuit of liberty. Countless of the enslaved in Washington County risked everything to break free from the shackles of bondage. Though the exact number who succeeded remains a mystery, we know many relied on the quiet courage of free people of color who offered crucial assistance.
Beyond local heroes, a network of activists known as the Underground Railroad stretched its lifeline across the North. A beacon of hope for those fleeing south, it offered a path to freedom, often leading through neighboring Pennsylvania. While the organized network primarily operated further to our East, its reach sometimes extended into western Maryland, providing a critical escape route for enslaved people.
Ready to delve deeper into these powerful narratives? Uncover the stories of Washington County’s African American heroes and explore the local sites that bear witness to their struggles.
